Mariana Franco talks with Jason Barnard about coping with marketing. Mariana Franco is an SEO expert and strategist with 12 years of experience in the digital world. For the past five years, she has focused exclusively on SEO. Mariana's journey began as a content writer, but her in-depth knowledge allowed her to quickly rise to Head of SEO. In this role, she oversaw a multilingual website with thousands of pages in 12 languages and managed content writers from five different countries. Her career progression continued upwards when she took on the position of Marketing Coordinator, but she eventually experienced burnout. Mariana emphasizes the importance of regularly reviewing your career path to make sure it aligns with your personal goals and passions. When she thought about it, she realized that while she loved her job, she did not love her work environment. Coincidentally, she already had several clients waiting for her services, so she was able to quit her job and start her own business. Successful marketing requires the marketing department as a whole to work with marketing teams and other departments to develop strategies and maximize impact. This cohesion is essential to deliver a consistent brand message across different channels, be it SEO, PPC or social media, and to create an environment where creativity thrives better than the competition. Building such a network of teams enables a unified approach to branding and marketing. In this episode, the delightfully insightful Mariana Franco discusses various aspects of coping with marketing. Mariana emphasizes the value of teamwork and collaboration within marketing departments and between different teams. She gives delightful suggestions on the structure of meetings in marketing departments and the need for a more productive and creative approach. The conversation also covers how teams align their efforts with the larger goals of the organization, as well as the challenges of setting KPIs for different marketing teams and strategies. In this episode Gert had a delightful and very informative conversation with the widely known title of The Brand SERP Guy, Jason Barnard.  Jason is an author and he used to be known as the Blue Dog cartoon character in Boowa and Kwala in 2007.  Using the child analogy with the History teacher, the teacher is the authority on the subject of history, but not a good authority on how to bake a cake.  This is where  the Knowledge Panel comes into picture and how Google will present you to the searchers, e.g. who you are, what you have to offer, what is your brand, etc. Listen and learn how easy it is or how much less effort you can build up your Knowledge Panel using the Kalicube process than doing it manually.  There's more to this episode that you can pick up especially on brand SERPs, so listen to the very end and make sure to download the transcript of the episode.   Podcast Highlights: 01:05 Introduction of the episode, the guest and how did they get introduced 03:34 The background of Jason Barnard and how he got to correct Google in presenting him as the character Blue Dog. 04:56 Why is it important to connect the dots for Google to see the different properties that they will take into account,  according to Gert? 06:26 What is the difference between branded and non-branded searches? (...When should people start to worry about their brand?) 10:01 How important are rich snippets for  courses or in a coaching program? (...What is Schema Markup in terms of how Google makes sense of what a web page is actually about?) 12:56 What benefit can it give you to take as much advantage of Google, play their game as a bonus perspective, rather than thinking of it as taking something away from you? 17:30 Although Google My Business and the Knowledge Panel are set up differently, how can the two exist together? (...Can everybody get a knowledge panel?) 21:18 What are the different options in Kalicube that people can use and what is the three-step process that goes on an eternal cycle for Google? 24:18 How long does it take to build the Knowledge Panel? (...What are the caveats to it?) 27:55 What are second party websites that you can have partial control of and what about the third party websites that you have no control of, but are confirming what you are saying on your website?   30:24 How much effort does one need to put up a knowledge panel by doing it manually compared to the Kalicube Pro's process? 31:57 How was Jason able to change his description with Google from a musician to being an author first? 35:45 What are the 3 most important things than Google's offering on Schema Markup? When creating a content, you need to consider putting out visuals, those with elaborated images, perhaps including tables and the writer's profile, as well. You also would need a caption that says something about the picture and if you're selling something, what's the benefit of buying it, right?  As Katrina McKinnon said in this conversation with Gert, there is power in creative story-telling and enhancing the reader's experience through interesting visual elements. She truly believes that you've got more chances of keeping your readers on the website, if your article looks beautiful, if it looks visually interesting. Content is King, but creativity is Queen.  Podcast Highlights:  00:01 Prologue 01:02 Podcast Intro 01:12 Introduction of the topic and guest, Katrina McKinnon 02:08 How Katrina came into the niche of content creation and was she able to create her company CopySmiths? 07:54 How does Katrina feel about Google's Helpful Content Update? 11:51 Why are visual images very helpful in content creation? People love clicking on photos, particularly photos with a little bit of text in it that says something about maybe a product feature or something about what's in that photo. Copy is pointless if no-one reads it, and no-one engages with it, and unless its on the Product Details Page (PDP), it doesnt need to be salesy, in fact, it probably shouldnt. Copy that informs and engages customers converts far better in the long run. Katrina is the Founder of CopySmiths, you can find her on Linkedin or head over to https://copysmiths.com/

In this podcast episode, Trevor talks to Katrina McKinnon from Copysmiths about the importance of quality content for generating natural search traffic. Is content still important? Creating great content is still vitally important for merchants as the most successful eCommerce stores get 60% of the traffic from organic searches. It is essential not to put your eggs in one basket by depending too much on organic or paid traffic. How to create great content Copywriters research keywords using tools like Hrefs. They then construct posts which include these keywords and publish them on a blog. The recommended length is 1400 words, broken up with other types of content such as images, quotes, tables etc. Breaking up slabs of text increases dwell rate and reduces bounce rate. Always write content which is focused on readers and not search engines. Google will track which post are getting read and give these higher search positions. What are the best kinds of content to publish Successful types of content include: Listicles. E.g. Top 10 lists. 101 ways to XYZ. Great for inspiring customers Answer to questions Google likes posts that answer the questions asked in the article title. It also likes multimedia. How often to publish? Once a week is the minimum frequency of publishing for which you should aim. Google says in its website guide that sites should write 'well and often'. How to create content in-house or find a writer? Options include: In-house writer. Difficult to maintain creativity. They tend to burn out Agencies. Have quality processes in place and are good for companies looking to scale. AI. AI content creation has its place tends to sound like robots How to get content read? What are the best places to post content? Organic social does not generate much traffic anymore. Some companies will have separate organic and paid social accounts as organic traffic may be reduced if paid social is also used on the account. How to measure success? A successful article will show up for 200 keywords, an unsuccessful article 20 keywords and a really successful article, 2000 keywords How long does it all take? Stores with about 1m+ visitors a year should see content ranking in 2 weeks. Brand new stores will take several months.
