Do you have a big ego? Do you know someone who has? This Quackcast is about utilising egos for comic characters for comedic purposes, to humanise character, or to make villains more unlikeable and or funny. Big egos are a sign of poor self esteem, people inflate their egos to cope with feelings of inadequacy and inferiority. For examples of that we have a certain prominent politician and also a tech billionaire as perfect representations of every facet of that concept. :) Personally I LOVE a protagonist with a big, inflated ego, especially if it's also illustrated that it's undeserved, and often shown punctured. It's pretty uncommon for protagonists to have big egos though unfortunately because people see that as weakness in their character and status rather than making them more interesting. Big egos are far more common in villains, mostly because it's seen as a negative trait, but also because it's an easy way to show how weak and pathetic they are, they're also a goldmine for easy laughs. The latter is the reason that the characters with the biggest egos in fiction are often not the main villain but the villain's lieutenant. My favourite protagonists with big egos are Tank Girl, George Costanza from Seinfeld, Duckman (played by the same actor as George. Jason Alexander), Flashman from the books by George MacDonald Fraser, Space Dandy, Basil Faulty from Faulty Towers, Hyacinth Bucket from Keeping up Appearances, and Meg from the series Drifters. I'd love to name more but it's not a common trait, though you can point out a million villains with massive egos. In the Quackcast I examine Conan the Barbarian as a story about ego: Conan acquires a massive ego as a reaction to being kidnapped as a child and living as a slave, then being trained as a gladiator and lauded with praise and women. That only increases when he gets his freedom, joins his friends and becomes a successful thief. He's then tasked with rescuing a princess from a cult and returning her to her father. His ego is so big he eschews the help of his friends and tries to do it alone. He's captured by the villain, Thulsa Doom, the same man who killed his mother and enslaved him. Thulsa lectures him on the strength of ego and manipulation before crucifying Conan on a tree. As he dies, Conan's ego dies with him. His friends find his body and take him back, reviving him without ego. In then end Conan defeats Thulsa Doom, Thulsa expects his ego to dominate Conan and save himself but Conan kills him the same way Thulsa killed his mother, and does it totally without ego. As a last gesture he burns down Thulsa's temple and his cult disbands: the last two symbols of Thulsa Doom's over inflated ego. Do you agree with my take on Conan the Barbarian? Do you like characters to have a big ego? If so, what are your fave examples? How many Slack conversations have you had that have been life-changing? If you answered anything other than “zero”, you are a liar. OR you are a member of the team that made the game we're talking about on this podcast. We're going back to 2019 to look at a stealth-puzzle game that became a phenomenon. We're talking Untitled Goose Game.On this episode of Stealth Boom Boom, we take a look at developer House House's confusion around why people didn't like the bird made up of two colours. We also discuss the use of sandbox on the physical box; three minutes of gameplay that put the game on people's radars; and celebrities like Mark Hoppus, Chrissy Teigen, Kyle MacLachlan and Beaker. Here are some of the things you're gonna hear us chat about in our review: being seen on purpose to manipulate and misdirect villagers; too many opportunities to brute force; HONKING; taking a corner like a car; a slapstick, warm Hitman; a stellar Hyacinth Bucket impression; maintaining eye contact; lineless, pastel CBBC characters; a reactive silent movie-like (also Breath of the Wild) piano; the weight of the waddle; grabbing things in your gob because you don't have hands; gliding along the water; a gorgeous and also sometimes ambiguous to-do list; a bin toothbrush; getting on TV; model villages; walking with a bell in your mouth; the post-game; and being a horrible goose. After all that, we take you through what some of the critics were saying about the game around the time it came out, and then we give you our final verdicts on whether Untitled Goose Game is a Pass, a Play, or an Espionage Explosion. For those who would like to play along at home, we'll be discussing, reviewing and dissecting Alien: Isolation on the next episode of Stealth Boom Boom.IMPORTANT LINKS TO THINGS
Maybe it's just our age but it feels like Keeping Up Appearances was almost ever present when we were growing up. But how does it hold up in the cold light of day? Could it be a timeless classic or is Hyacinth Bucket a true britcom villain?
In this episode, we delve into the quintessential British sitcom Keeping Up Appearances, created and written by Roy Clarke. Airing on BBC1 from 1990 to 1995, this beloved show captivated audiences with its witty portrayal of suburban snobbery and eccentricity. We explore the origins of the series, the inspirations behind its characters, and its impact on British comedy. From Hyacinth Bucket's infamous pronunciation of her surname as "Bouquet" to the hilarious antics of her dysfunctional family, we examine what made this show a timeless classic. Hyacinth Bucket, brilliantly portrayed by Dame Patricia Routledge, is the heart of the series. Her relentless pursuit of social status and her comically disastrous attempts to impress her neighbors form the core of the show's humor. We discuss Routledge's illustrious career and how she brought Hyacinth to life, making her one of the most memorable characters in British television history. We also touch upon the other key characters, including Hyacinth's long-suffering husband Richard, her sisters Daisy and Rose, and their quirky father. The show's success wasn't limited to the UK. Keeping Up Appearances found a dedicated fan base in the US, Canada, Australia, and several European countries. We explore its international appeal and how it became BBC Worldwide's most exported television program by 2016. Through interviews with cast members, fans, and television critics, we gain insight into why this show resonated with viewers across the globe and how it continues to be beloved by audiences today. We also examine some of the show's most iconic episodes and moments. From Hyacinth's disastrous candlelight suppers to her encounters with the nervous postman and the bemused vicar, we relive the scenes that had audiences in stitches. With its sharp writing, memorable characters, and timeless humor, Keeping Up Appearances remains a shining example of British sitcom excellence. Join us as we celebrate this iconic series and its enduring charm. Talk2TheHand is an independent throwback podcast run by husband and wife, Jimmy and Beth. That Does Suit Madame, a Podcast about "Are You Being Served?"
“No, the chef's gone mother…” Mr. Brandon was at that Swiss Yodeling Contest and caught a bug. No more waiting, Unanimous: Are You Being Served Again/Grace & Favour has arrived! Another big thanks to Dean for co-hosting again! “Are You Being Served: The Next Generation”? AYBSA/G&F aired only 7 years after the original series ended. New theme song! 1990's pan-and-scan opening painting! We're back at Grace Brothers after it finally closes down. The first scene with the characters mirrors the opening of the original pilot with a broken elevator incident. Wendy Richard paused her East Enders career just to film the new series! Enter Joanne Heywood who plays Jessica Lovelock, Young Mr. Grace's personal attendant. Due to an inheritance from the Grace Bros Pension Fund, the staff end up with a 16th Century English manor house. You can get married at the real Millstone Manor in the UK (called Chavenage) built in 1576. It's 2nd owner, Nathanial Stevens, supported Oliver Cromwell during the English Civil War and encouraged the killing of King Charles I. He dies soon after and his ghost was seen riding a carriage in remorse for the king's killing. Meet Tiddles! (again) Who was Gladys Wainwright? One goes… We meet Morris Moulterd played by Billy Burden who's famous for his West Country Somerset accent. Within the series, Millstone Manor was located somewhat close to Somerset which explains Mr. Moulterd's accent. The staff have to round up chickens in the mud while wearing their finest garb (with a Hyacinth Bucket-esqe look). Mrs. Slocombe milks a cow and we learn that she had a romantic rendezvous with a young Mr. Moulterd. Meet Mavis Moulterd, played by Fleur Bennett, the plucky local “land girl”. The staff are going to live at the Manor and rent out the rooms as a hotel. Captain Peacock does a Jane Fonda exercise video every night (which ties him to the middle class). Fake phone numbers in the UK! Mr. Brandon feels his feelings about Mr. Humphries, even in the 1990s, still not being out of the closet. That Does Suit Madame, a Podcast about "Are You Being Served?"
“I'm a confirmed bachelor. More confirmed than you think!”. We re-welcome special guest host Dean Arcuri from Aussie-land! (he's noice, he's diff'rent, he's unyewsuel) Sherrie Hewson liked our tweet! (Who played Mrs. Slocombe in the 2016 BBC reboot/Benedorm). Deep Cut Jeff and refrigerator trivia. Aussie and Southern accents. Kath & Kim love and footie franks. UK accents on Australian TV. We recommend GlobalGiving.org for support for Ukraine. “Undesirable Alien” is the only Australian AYBS episode that's an original script; all other episodes are frame-by-frame remakes of the original UK episodes. Therefore, this is a “lost episode” (which is also very difficult to find online… good luck). Storyline: Mr. Humphries moves to Australia and works at “Bone's”, remarkably similar to Grace Bros. Parody law: tweaking art so it's your own and not a 100% copy. Were the Australian AYBS episodes created so Channel 10 could have a piece of the AYBS pie that ABC had already secured? The American Kath & Kim, Beane's of Boston, a remake of Hyacinth Bucket in Ohio: can you capture lightening in the bottle a 2nd time? The Americans learn the term “bogans”. …and “occa”. Mercuries and Subarus. Mr. Jeff sings! The Roseanne/Absolutely Fabulous connection. June Bronhill, who played the Mrs. Slocombe character (named Mrs. Crawford). She was a famous opera singer whose first acting credit was this show! Occa = Aussie term for someone with a heavy Australian accent. Mr. Brandon is being formulaic about comedy?! How much is that $10.50 Aus bowtie worth today? About $30 US. The cultural phenomenon/soap opera called “Neighbours” which is ending after 37 years of filming 5 days a week. American soaps air during daytime TV. Australia and the UK's soaps are primetime = very different stuff. Mr. Humphries had a work permit to work at Bone's department store but it was lost! Immigration is looking for him on the sales floor. So of course, Mr. Humphries goes into disguise as a bogan maintenance worker. Why did he have corks on his hat in his bogan costume? Bruce is the butchest name. Mrs. Crawford agrees to marry Mr. Humphries so he can stay employed with the team. Using random Australian words. Didgeridoo! Koala! Tim Tam slams are illegal in Northern Mississippi… We want to import fairy bread: white bread, butter, sprinkles. Imaging life next to a big, hairy, beer-drinking man. The “Fast Forward” skit about AYBS starring Kath & Kim stars Magda Szubanski and Gina Riley. Actors copying original AYBS roles vs. a new interpretation of the character. LGBT rights in Australia in the early 1980's. Dean speaks good. Suing for breach of promise? (Calling off an engagement and how engagement rings figure into things). Navigating COVID relationships. “Nutbush City Limits”, the Tina Turner song, is a required Australian wedding song. Disappointment in The Netherlands. And then they find the work permit form! Mrs. Crawford doesn't get to marry Mr. Humphries after all. Deus Ex Machinaaaaaa! …and Mr. Humphries is, once again, free. Up next: Are You Being Served Again? / Grace & Favour!!! For episode 23, Elizabeth and Ben are joined by teacher, opera singer and Dungeon Master Myf Coghill on a trip to Ankh-Morpork's opera house in 1994's Discworld novel of witches, phantoms and experimental cookery: Maskerade! Nanny Ogg finds herself in a coven with Granny Weatherwax and...no-one. She decides young Agnes Nitt - last seen dabbling in the craft while wearing black lace and calling herself "Perdita" - is just the person to fill the position - but Agnes has run off to Ankh-Morpork to join the opera, where all is not well. A mysterious "Opera Ghost" watches over every performance, and while he used to be seen as a good luck charm, he's become demanding, dangerous and possibly deranged. "Perdita" has gotten herself mixed up in it all, thanks to her friendship with the ingenue Christine. Can she find out the identity of the Opera Ghost before the bodies start stacking up - and before Granny and Nanny stick their noses in and do it for her? Pratchett delves into a world hitherto unknown to him and takes Granny and Nanny to the big city for their penultimate book, heavily influenced by The Phantom of the Opera, and about much more earthly matters than their previous adventures. We learn a lot about opera, Andrew Lloyd Webber and the world of publishing, and delve into Pratchett's treatment of Agnes, a beloved character whose unflattering portrayal was the subject of many questions and comments. Did Maskerade bring out the opera fan in you? Do you think Agnes deserved better? And despite being a bit of a downer, is this one of the best Discworld books we've discussed so far? Use the hashtag #Pratchat23 on social media to join the conversation and let us know what you think! We're staying in Ankh-Morpork for Feet of Clay in October before heading back in time to explore the origins of Granny Weatherwax in November with Equal Rites. The English sit-com Keeping Up Appearances was a farce created by Roy Clarke (of Open All Hours and Last of the Summer Wine fame) which ran on BBC One from 1990 to 1995. It starred Patricia Routledge as Hyacinth Bucket, a woman who aspires to move among the upper class, and is desperately ashamed of her lower class family. A running gag is that she tries to have everyone pronounce her family name "bouquet", despite the fact that her middle class husband Richard - played by Clive Swift - has always pronounced it "bucket".Avengers: Endgame (2019) was the final film in the Avengers series, part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Why do so many British sitcoms and novels centre around women who are obsessed with status? Jenni talks to television critic Julia Raeside and journalist and critic Alex Clark.Jenni speaks to Jo Miller as she steps down from one of the most high-profile local government jobs in the UK. Jo was appointed Chief Executive of Doncaster Council by central Government in 2012, when the Council was officially a “failing” local authority. It’s Adam’s (somewhat belated) Birthday choice; and he’s picked 1972’s “Death Line” (renamed “Raw Meat” in the US of A). Set on the London Underground, this grimy shocker features Hyacinth Bucket’s husband contemplating cannibalism on the Piccadilly Line, Christopher Lee’s moustache making a bristly cameo, and Donald Pleasence demanding tea! A lot. Along the way we also discuss Altered Carbon, Lords of Salem, Inside No.9, The Prestige, and X-Men movies Vs. The Marvel Cinematic Universe. MIND THE DOORS! Watch (or re-watch) to avoid spoilers, and join us.
This week is the turn of the wonderful Mr Steve Nallon. From Margret Thatcher to John Inman to Hyacinth Bucket (all of whom make appearances here), Steve has given his impressions to the world. As one of the leading voices on 'Spitting Image' his career has seen him work with everyone from Dame Edna to Boy George. Steve tells us his journey from working mens clubs in the north of England to appearing live to an audience of 35 million on US television. He tells of his work on his one man shows and his experiences of being taken to his first gay club by family members. We talk about the play we are both currently playing in, in London. A fascinating chat with a hard working, extremely funny man. This episode was recorded in the dressing room in Greenwich Theatre pre-show. I could of talked for hours!! Such a pleasure to chat to . I think you will all really enjoy. http://www.nallon.com/ @SteveNallon
