From his early days attempting to join a symphony orchestra to his serendipitous entry into instrument modification, to the present day of crafting high-quality, customized instruments tailor-made to the individual's personality and playing preferences, Ken Larson's's story is one of perseverance, innovation, and a deep passion for music. In this interview, Ken discusses his teaching philosophy for young musicians, the intricacies of trumpet design, and how overcoming personal challenges, including a severe car accident, shaped his approach to both playing and making trumpets. Ken also delves into the nuanced relationship between a musician's energy and the metal of their instrument, offering a unique perspective that blends both empirical knowledge and personal experience.Episode highlights:00:47 Audition Experiences and Overcoming Nerves02:44 Teaching and Personal Growth06:22 Journey into Trumpet Playing08:49 Early Career and Realizations10:46 Mentorship and Learning15:39 Accident and Recovery19:57 Craftsmanship and Instrument Modification28:05 Deciding the Size and Placement of the Hole28:15 The Magic of Metal Vibrations28:47 Rubber vs. Cork Water Key Stoppers29:23 Yamaha's Adjustable Water Key Lever30:03 The Placebo Effect in Instrument Sound33:22 Heat Treating and Metal Softening33:57 The Impact of COVID on Instrument Sales35:04 The Philosophy of Trumpet Building38:07 Balancing Resistance in Trumpet Playing39:27 The Mental Aspect of Trumpet Playing39:46 The Role of Fatigue in Finding the Right Equipment41:48 The Importance of Consistency46:38 Teaching Young Trumpet Players50:55 The Community Element in Music53:42 Conclusion and Future TopicsResources Mentioned:Ken Larson's BrasswerksConnect With the Guest:kenlarsonsbrasswerks@hotmail.comYou've been listening to Trumpet Dynamics, telling the story of the trumpet, in the words of those who play it. PAWS JAWS ENFORCING LAWS Episode 51 River Coffee Roasters 1240 Bay St. Florence OR 97439 Voted by Country Living, Florence is one of the best small towns in Oregon! That was evident as soon as we drove into this town of 8,000 on the banks of the Siuslaw River. What an authentic gem, and a secret we’d like to keep to ourselves.  Unfortunately we feel, for our listeners sake, compelled to share our find with anyone who may be looking for the perfect getaway, a place to raise a family, or retire. As soon as you turn on to Bay Street, look riverside and you will see River Roasters, a historic former Evinrude outboard motor repair building. This former mechanics shop has been turned into one of the most inviting, rustic, friendly coffee shops on the PCH. Looking down the street at the Historic Old Town district seems like a movie set, complete with ornamental street lights, and benches to sit on and people, or seal watch. You can stroll even further down the peer and watch the river boats plying the waters. Facing the river across the street you will encounter dozens of shops, galleries, and farm to table restaurants. Our first guest, Kathy Stone, owner of the once Siuslaw Coffee, now River Roasters was dreading becoming an empty nester, (even before she became one). She worried about how to fill her time, and took a leap of faith when Siuslaw Coffee became available. She purchased this historic building, and with her own personal touch, the rest, as they say is history. When in her twenties, she went to Europe with her sister, and they split up. Her advice, when directed to “a friend's house” to spend the night in Belgium... wear a bodysuit. But what did she do when invited a second time to sleep in someone else's room? How about the third time, and did she learn any lessons? Ken Larson, a retired police officer gives sound advice when you are first being introduced to your newborn son. Hint:It has something to do with physiology, and marking territory. Why would his police dog bite another law enforcement officer, instead of going after the perpetrator? Noisy handcuffs and a dog with a long memory, may be in the answer. What is your new normal? Ken’s advice for people suffering from PTSD should be practiced by everyone. Learn from one who knows...and if you think our podcast is long,  listen to what his favorite podcast is in length..whew you could grow a beard in that time. As a writer and herbalist Candace Hunter is a successful podcaster, in her own right. She has a business helping people, and teaching about herbal medicine. Is oregano a medicine? Find out this week. Is there magic in what she does, and how does her philosophy coincide with the Allopathic medical community? And how does coffee  play into this?  was it ever considered to be a magical elixir. Where does science stop and magic begin ?  It depends on who you talk to, but trust us you will come away with a much better understanding of the healing power this woman holds. For more information go to The American Herbalist Guild, Practical Herbalist website, or Real Herbalism Radio. Make sure to check out this week's playlist for Paws, Jaws, Enforcing Laws, on Spotify, to hear musical selections from our guests. http://bit.ly/RiverRoastersCoffee  Remember if you have a question,or topic you want us to follow up on from this week, or any other episode of the CCCRS,we are happy to try to get that done in the segment we call Free Refills.       Ken Larson               Leaders Must Get in Position to be in Position Are you in position to be in a position for success? As a leader, you have the ability to see the big picture and to think strategically. Often that type of thinking doesn’t lend itself to easily being able to see the first step toward getting to that picture. Maybe you need to hire a new COO. Contacting a head-hunter and looking for a replacement probably isn’t your best first step. Being able to achieve an end result requires taking a step back to review what is necessary to make it happen. For many of you, that will involve painstaking, detailed thinking. If you need the team to be in a position to achieve success, be sure to get them in the position they need to be in first. Stop jumping around. Get in position to be in position, and you’ll be the leader everyone consults when success is the end goal.   You can learn more about Ken Larson by visiting his website and going to is profile on LinkedIn.     Click here to check out our newest leadership development tool – LEAD – Leadership Education and Development          Steve Caldwell is an executive mentor and coach to managers and leaders who desire to excel in their career and become the leader others want to follow.
