WORT 89.9FM Madison · Historical Perspective on National Guard and Federal Agents Historian John W. Hall(photo courtesy wisc.edu) On Saturday, January 24th, U.S. Border Patrol agents Jesus Ochoa and Raymundo Guttierez shot ICU nurse Alex Pretti dead in the streets of the Whittier Neighborhood of South Minneapolis. The shooting marked the 9th person who has died at the hands of ICE or CPB agents, or in ICE custody so far, nationwide, this year. In response to the Pretti shooting, Governor Tim Walz has deployed 1,500 Minnesota National Guard troops to the Twin Cities. The state has deployed Guard troops to federal buildings. So far, the Guard troops have tried to distinguish themselves from federal DHS agents by wearing high-visibility vests and providing coffee and donuts to protestors. Nonetheless, the presence of Minnesota armed troops and heavily armed federal officers raises fears of conflict between the two. John W. Hall is the Ambrose-Hesseltine Professor of Military History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and he joined Monday Buzz host Brian Standing on February 2, 2026 to give us a historical perspective of the relationship between state troops and the federal government. A city in mourning has turned into a city in revolt. On January 24, 2026, Alex Jeffrey Pretti, a dedicated ICU nurse who cared for American veterans, was shot 10 times by federal Border Patrol agents in South Minneapolis. While the Trump Administration and Secretary Kristi Noem claim Pretti was a "violent gunman" who resisted arrest, explosive bystander video appears to show him holding nothing but a cellphone. We break down the frame-by-frame footage, the "heroic" last moments where Pretti tried to shield a woman from being pepper-sprayed, and why the Minnesota National Guard has been activated as thousands take to the streets.
This week on the podcast, we break down a historic snow storm that swept across the country, snarling travel, knocking out power, and forcing communities to band together in record-low temperatures. But Minnesota has been dealing with more than just the weather — in recent weeks, a surge of federal activity and civil unrest has taken center stage. President Trump has announced he is sending border czar Tom Homan to Minnesota amid ongoing turmoil tied to a large ICE enforcement operation in the state, a move that has sparked debate and drawn national attention.Meanwhile, in an unexpected twist, the Minnesota National Guard made headlines for handing out coffee and donuts to anti-ICE protesters — a gesture local officials called a demonstration of community support and safety amid tensions. We'll cover: • How the snow storm impacted daily life and emergency services • What Tom Homan's deployment means for federal and state relations • The role of the National Guard in community engagement • Voices from protesters, residents, and officials on all sides#murphyengraving #homan #donutsandcoffee Follow us on: Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Apple, SpotifyREMEMBER TO SUBSCRIBE….DOWNLOAD ON ALL YOUR AUDIO PLATFORMS….AND LEAVE A 5 STAR RATING AND REVIEW ON APPLE & SPOTIFY!!!New Sponsor: Murphy Engraving-Reach out to Kevin for all your engraving needs!murphyengraving@gmail.com 513-616-6463 FACEBOOK: MURPHY ENGRAVINGINSTAGRAM: MURPHY_ENGRAVINGTell him One More & I'm Outta Here sent ya!!!Support the show
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey joins the Chuck ToddCast to discuss the unprecedented federal immigration enforcement crisis unfolding in his city as masked ICE and DHS agents have effectively occupied Minneapolis in what appears to be an operation designed more for political retribution than public safety. Frey explains the complex dynamics between city, state, and federal authority, noting that Minneapolis maintains a policy of not coordinating with federal immigration enforcement because police officers should focus on keeping communities safe rather than targeting immigrants. He reveals alarming constitutional violations, including non-white off-duty Minneapolis police officers being racially profiled and harassed by ICE agents and residents being stopped and asked for ID based on their accents. With Minneapolis already critically understaffed on police officers per capita, the massive imbalance between local law enforcement and ICE agents has created a tenuous situation where police are forced to respond to citizens being harassed while protesters exercise their First Amendment rights. The crisis has been compounded by what Frey describes as a weaponized Department of Justice that can't be trusted, evidenced by his office receiving a subpoena. The mayor emphasizes that much of the federal action stems from a fraud issue that had nothing to do with illegal immigration, yet racist attacks on the Somali community followed—despite the fact that Somalis in Minneapolis came legally as refugees and most are U.S. citizens. Frey has held discussions with Governor Tim Walz about potentially deploying the Minnesota National Guard and worries about his ability to conduct a real investigation into the shooting of Renee Good by ICE. Frey contends the operation is designed to whip the public into a frenzy rather than address genuine immigration concerns. Get your wardrobe sorted and your gift list handled with Quince. Don't wait! On this “TACO Trump Thursday” episode of the Chuck ToddCast, Chuck breaks down how market pressure forced Donald Trump to abruptly back off his Greenland threats and announce a face-saving deal—one that looks suspiciously like what already existed—underscoring how easily Trump can be manipulated and how desperate he is to cement a sense of historical relevance. Even as Republicans in Congress continue to appease him, the damage to America’s relationships with Canada and Europe is already done, and Trump’s indifference to NATO and unilateral approach ensures lasting consequences well beyond any short-term retreat. The conversation then turns to the political fallout at home: the perilous midterm landscape for Democrats, a messy Minnesota Senate race, why conventional Republicans still can’t win blue-leaning states without a net-positive environment, and how figures like Bill Cassidy may have no path forward inside today’s GOP. Chuck also digs into the Democratic Party’s looming 2028 calendar fight, arguing the DNC should rethink its early-state strategy by looking hard at Iowa, Kansas, and Nebraska—and remembering that winning rural America, not just big cities, is the only way to build a durable majority. SEASON 4 EPISODE 49: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (2:30) SPECIAL COMMENT: BREAK the cover-up of the ICE murder of Renee Good: 1) INVESTIGATE regardless -on the state and county levels. 2) INDICT and ARREST the ICE shooter, Jonathan Ross (and the Trump militia members who were with him as accessories). 3) IMPEACH Homeland Security Chief Kristi Noem, Ice Director Todd Lyons (and Border Czar Tom Homan. Representative Angie Craig says now the Noem impeachment will proceed). 4) Iif Noem or any other ICE or DHS official continues to stonewall local investigators seeking justice for the murdered women, indict and arrest them for OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE. 5) When the Senate takes up the resolution to fund the government past January 30, all Democrats must refuse to vote yes unless ICE is neutered (and Trump's magic war wand as well). This is a pivotal moment in American history. ICE's reaction to its crimes has been to double down. It is now hiding behind this empty, corrupt demand that we all need to improve the “tone” and when they say “we” they mean “you” and when they say “tone” they mean “any criticism at all.” Tom Homan went on Fox and actually added to this bankrupt bromide, NEW threats. "There will be more bloodshed unless we decrease the hateful rhetoric.” Translation: if you keep criticizing us, we will keep shooting you. The acting ICE chief, Lyons, may be even worse. He is daring Minnesota to enforce its laws. “My message to the sheriff is: try and arrest my folks, let’s see what happens.” What should happen is the sheriff serving warrants to Ross, Noem, Lyons and the rest of their ICE street gang - with the Minnesota National Guard standing behind the sheriff. ALSO: Why are these fascists so obsessed with killing Americans? It may be the guns. Not the access to them: the physical impact on a shooter's brain by firing a weapon, as established by new tests. Plus updates on Trump doubling down on his Epstein Cover-up, Jim Jordan's moronic decision to let Jack Smith testify in public, and some Trump madness we should encourage. He wants to repel from a helicopter like Navy Seals. Yes please! Do it! B-Block (32:00) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: How Will Chamberlain, Laura Loomer, Matt Walsh and the philosopher of MAGA, Catturd, 180'd on action in places like Venezuela once they realized Trump had 540'd. The headline says 'Visas for Only Fans Models' but the article does not. And the only person who thinks Stephen A. Smith is a Democrat or a viable presidential candidate is Stephen A. Smith. Up to now it's been funny and a little sad. But now that he has defended the murder of Renee Good and sucked up to Trump and MAGA, it has to be said: to save the brand that they and a lot of people worked their lives to build, Disney chief Bob Iger and ESPN president Jimmy Pitaro have to fire Smith. Oh and - accordingly - I've re-named Stephen. C-Block (45:00) MONDAYS WITH THURBER: Only fitting. Next month it will have been a startling 95 years since James Thurber prophesied the advent of Trump. CIVIL UNREST INTENSIFIES IN TEHRAN. SHOOTING AT LDS CHURCH IN UTAH REVEALS TRANSNATIONAL CRIME SYNDICATE.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Middle East: The situation in Iran is heating up as demonstrations have shifted to riots and a general state of uprising in many cities around the country. This morning internet access to the outside world was cut for most of the country, and flights have allegedly been halted at Tabriz International Airport.Analyst Comment: Right now it's too soon to tell if this is the real-deal, simply due to the extremely significant amount of deception surrounding events in Tehran. A lot of older or misleading footage has circulated, so it's hard to determine what's real and what isn't. The Iranian government shutting off the internet in an attempt to halt communications out of the country is a common tactic, but also strongly indicates that government forces are concerned with the growing level of uprising. How far this will go is anyone's guess, but this will be something to monitor for the next few days.-HomeFront-Minnesota: Overnight various protest events continued in Minneapolis, along with serious developments on the political front. In a press statement yesterday Gov. Tim Walz stated that he has given the WARNO (warning order) for Minnesota National Guard troops to deploy in a policing role, against federal agents. During this press conference, a reporter directly asked Walz if these troops would be used to defend the state from federal forces. In response, Walz stated that Minnesota has "never been at war with the Federal government", before directly stating that these troops will be used to "protect the people of Minnesota" from a "rogue federal agent".Utah: Yesterday evening a mass shooting was reported at an LDS church in Salt Lake City. Local authorities state that a shooting broke out in the parking lot of the LDS church on Redwood Road. At the time of the shooting, a crowd was gathered in the parking lot for a funeral/memorial service being held inside the church. The shooting reportedly took place as a result of mutual combat between two suspects, both of which are currently at large. Concerning casualties, 2x were killed and 6x others wounded during the engagement.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: Shootings involving churches or other places of worship are worth dedicating more attention to, as these are more vulnerable sites that are easy targets for malign actors and terrorists. However, a brief investigation into this shooting indicates that this incident is not what many may think at first. The church itself is a front...this facility is really a safehouse/community center for the Tongan Crip Gang (TCG). The facility is indeed a real LDS church, however this particular ward has been taken over by the gang, which have declared this church (and the surrounding terrain) to be their turf.Photo and video evidence from inside the Church on the night of the shooting confirm a heavy TCG presence, with various Lieutenants and their footsoldiers manning security by all of the doors.Videos of the memorial service confirm nearly everyone was wearing the "colors" of the TCG (which are blue bandanas), with some people even showing up to the service wearing ski masks, drinking alcohol, and flashing gang signs to the police officers in the church after the shooting.Additional investigation indicates that this was not a one-off event. Per the website of this church, services at this facility are only held in the Tongan language. No English services are held at this location, which indicates both the demographic of the alleged congregation and also provi
Tensions are high in Minneapolis after an ICE officer fatally shot a woman yesterday. Five Republicans joined Democrats, but the Senate still has two more procedural votes ahead, and the president could veto the legislation. In this episode of The Wright Report, Bryan explains why Minnesota's governor is openly escalating toward a constitutional crisis, how a deadly ICE confrontation is being weaponized politically, and why Democrats may be preparing nationwide unrest to distract from a massive fraud reckoning. He then covers major White House moves on housing, defense contractors, Venezuela, China, Russia, and Greenland, showing how Trump's strategy is reshaping global power. Tim Walz Declares a De Facto War on the Federal Government: Minnesota Governor Tim Walz announced that his state is "in a state of war" with the federal government after an ICE officer shot and killed protester Renee Good during an immigration raid in Minneapolis. Video shows Good used her vehicle as a weapon against the officer, who fired in self-defense after being struck. Walz ordered the National Guard to prepare for deployment and called on activists nationwide to rise up, prompting warnings that his rhetoric may meet the legal definition of insurrection. A Manufactured Crisis and the Somali Fraud Reckoning: Bryan explains why the timing of Walz's escalation matters. Attorney General Pam Bondi just surged federal investigators into Minnesota to probe billion-dollar Somali fraud rings tied to Medicaid, daycare centers, and migrant nonprofits, many of which donated to Democratic campaigns. Federal funds to Minnesota and other blue states have been frozen or cut, and the White House is preparing a nationwide fraud announcement. Bryan warns that the death of an activist is being exploited to distract from what could become one of the largest corruption scandals in U.S. history. White House Targets Defense Contractors and Housing Costs: President Trump issued an executive order blocking major defense contractors from paying dividends or buying back stock until weapons production accelerates. CEO compensation is capped at five million dollars annually. Trump also moved to ban large institutional investors from buying additional single-family homes, arguing corporate buyers are pricing Americans out of the housing market. Senate Republicans are already drafting legislation to codify the policy. Trump Confronts Socialist Housing Policy in New York City: The Justice Department is reviewing whether New York City's new socialist mayor and his housing director violated anti-discrimination laws. The housing director has publicly called homeownership a tool of white supremacy and advocated seizing private property, with the mayor openly endorsing her views. DOJ officials say racial targeting in housing policy is unlawful and will be challenged. Global Shockwaves from Venezuela and the Ghost Fleet: Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed a three-phase U.S. plan for Venezuela, beginning with stability under remnants of the Maduro regime, followed by economic recovery and eventual democratic transition. The United States will act as Venezuela's sole oil dealer while seizing ghost-fleet tankers moving Iranian and Russian oil. Trump authorized U.S. forces to seize ships even after they reflagged as Russian, directly squeezing Moscow's war finances and Beijing's energy supply. Greenland and Europe's Energy Reality Check: Denmark warned it would use lethal force if U.S. troops attempt to seize Greenland, even as Chinese submarines map Arctic waters near U.S. defenses. Bryan contrasts Europe's military posturing with its fragile energy reality, as winter cold, snow-covered solar panels, and weak wind output drive electricity shortages and price spikes across Germany and Northern Europe "And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." - John 8:32 Keywords: January 8 2026 Wright Report, Tim Walz ICE shooting Minneapolis, Renee Good protest death, Minnesota National Guard insurrection rhetoric, Somali fraud Medicaid daycare nonprofits, Pam Bondi investigation surge, defense contractor dividend ban Trump, institutional investors single family homes, Zohran Mamdani housing discrimination DOJ, Venezuela stability first strategy Rubio, ghost fleet tanker seizures Russia Iran, Greenland Denmark threat U.S. troops, China Arctic submarine mapping, Europe winter energy crisis

Lots of work to do—let's get to it—Here are 3 big things for this hour— Number One— The Iranian military is threatening to attack the United States as a pre-emptive move after recent comments from President Trump—I guess they didn't get the memo Number Two— Meanwhile In Venezuela, where they did get the memo—they are working to keep order following the arrest in the middle of the night of their dictator Nicolas Maduro— Number Three— It seems Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is ready to turn back the hands of time to 1861—and pit the Minnesota National Guard against federal law enforcement officers arresting illegal aliens—
Steve sits down with Lt. Steven L. Rogers (Ret.), retired police lieutenant, former Air Force & Naval Reservist, author, and Executive Director of the Association of the United States Navy, to lay out what really happened in the Minneapolis ICE shooting. Rogers separates fact from spin with his law-enforcement and military experience, and addresses Governor Tim Walz's shocking statement yesterday about sending the Minnesota National Guard to confront federal agents, a move that could be considered incitement.
Cited website: https://lawofselfdefense.com/The shooting in Minneapolis by an ICE agent is predictably being presented as excessive force by law enforcement. A careful examination of the facts shows that it was actually a very proper application of lethal force in self-defense. The laws of all 50 states agree on both the elements and propriety of the act. Left-wing protesters have no right to interfere with ICE. Further, Minnesota's Governor Walz is brushing very close to armed sedition or treason with his orders to the Minnesota National Guard.
BULLETIN PODCAST: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN The Trump Administration has begun its shooting war, its reign of terror, against the peaceful and unarmed citizens of the United States. A woman is dead in Minneapolis, killed by ICE, reportedly a legal observer during a raid in a local neighborhood. In one statement, ICE claimed the victim was trying to run over an agent; in another it claimed an agent HAD been run over. Neither claim is true. Multiple videos show without a shadow of a doubt that this is a lie. As a car – which was not even blocking a street - moves out of the way of an ICE vehicle, a militia member exits HIS car, approaches the victim’s car from the back and the side, and shoots the driver three times through the driver's window. Reportedly in the face. The shooter is clear of the vehicle. Mayor Jacob Frey of Minneapolis has told ICE to "get the f***" out of Minneapolis. Minnesota governor Tim Walz has taken a preliminary step towards mobilizing his national guard, issued a so-called “warning order” to the Minnesota National Guard – as he termed it, a “heads up” to its members that he may call up the Guard. The housing market today is in an increasingly unsustainable paradox: younger Americans need houses to be more affordable so that they can become homeowners. Meanwhile, homeowners and the entire U.S. economy need houses to rise in price to make them a secure and profitable investment. Thus, we are trapped between making homeownership increasingly difficult or sinking the economy. Saving Elephants host Josh Lewis is joined by president of Strong Towns Chuck Marohn to discuss his latest book: Escaping the Housing Trap. About Chuck Marohn From strongtowns.org Charles Marohn (known as “Chuck” to friends and colleagues) is the founder and president of Strong Towns. You didn't think we'd get through another Minnesota March without a doozy of a snowstorm, did you? Minnesotans across the state woke up Wednesday to several inches of cement-like snow on the ground. Minneapolis, St. Paul and the surrounding Twin Cities region declared snow emergencies and southern Minnesota saw blizzard conditions.Gov. Tim Walz Wednesday morning authorized the Minnesota National Guard to support emergency winter storm operations and help rescue stranded drivers in Freeborn County. By noon, blowing snow was still causing problems on the roads in southern Minnesota. Several highways in the area were closed, including Interstate 90, and no travel was advised for most state highways in multiple southern Minnesota counties.MPR News host Nina Moini talked with MPR News chief meteorologist Paul Huttner for a closer look at the storm and what's next. And Bryan Lillie, maintenance superintendent for MnDOT in south-central Minnesota, shares the latest on road conditions in his region.
Peter O'Rourke, former Acting Secretary of Veteran Affairs, reacts to the news that Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz declined to deploy to Iraq for combat duty as a high-ranking member of the Minnesota National Guard. “When you're in a guard unit and you get called up by your nation to deploy and to serve in a combat zone, that's the pinnacle of your service especially in a guard unit. And to see your senior enlisted guy decide that his personal ambition was much more important than that unit's ambition, that had to have been a blow to their morale," he says.
