In this episode, I am joined by Kester Brewin, my partner, for the first Process This series on Artificial Intelligence. Here we wrap-up our series of interviews as we delve into the multifaceted impact of artificial intelligence on theology, ethics, law, and society. Reflecting on our conversations with interdisciplinary experts, we focus on the philosophical and ethical implications of AI, from Taylor Swift's stance on AI misuse to the potential dangers of deep fake technology on social media platforms. Topics include AI's challenges to human individuality, freedom, and personhood, illustrated by references to TikTok, historical events, and Weber's theory of disenchantment. The episode explores the balancing act between technological advancements and ethical considerations, highlighting both optimistic and pessimistic views on AI's role in problem-solving and its societal impact. Through examples from Tolkien, transhumanism, and educational practices, the discussion underscores the need for responsible regulation and the importance of community in navigating modern capitalism's whirlpool, ultimately pondering the true cost of technological progress on human dignity and autonomy. Kester joined me, and the members of the Process This community as we recorded it live. We have all been talking about AI of late and I have been on a bit of a reading deep dive about it. I am thrilled to have my friend Kester Brewin back on the podcast to talk about Artificial Intelligence & the future of religion. His new book, God-like: A 500-Year History of Artificial Intelligence in Myths, Machines, Monsters is out and 100% zesty. It is way too good for y'all not to check it out. It is not only a powerful telling of humanity's ongoing relationship with technology and a reflection on the current questions surrounding AI, but it is also the most compelling radical theological text I have read. It demonstrates the symbolic starvation of a marketized public square, the wisdom of what has been harbored in religious reflection, and the need for the return of theology beyond religion. It is also practical theology at its best. It ends with a compelling call to community without an addiction to nostalgia or an allergy to the sacred. I would say more, but you can listen to our conversation. “There is a perception from top to bottom that doing things on paper, doing conceptual thinking, is at the apex of everything, that this is where you want to be,” muses Trevor H J Marchand, Emeritus Professor in the Department of Anthropology and Sociology at SOAS London. “Working with your hands is seen as something for kids who did not quite make it in the classroom." Speaking on this episode, he explains that this needs to change, urgently. “We need to broaden our understanding of what knowledge and what intelligence is,” argues Marchand. “Until we establish a new values system, we are going to struggle to get the hands on learning into the curriculum and have respect for it.” He and Kester Brewin discuss why this is, taking in everything from building Minarets in Yemen to 2.6m tall people in the classroom.

Guest Bio: This week we speak with Kester Brewin! Kester is a mathematics teacher known as one of the leading thinkers in philosophy of religion and technology. The power of his work lies in the synthesis of ideas from disparate fields, playing the history of piracy off a psychotherapeutic reading of Star Wars, or pushing Harry Potter to play alongside both Batman and Shakespeare’s Prospero. Accessible, challenging and richly rewarding, his work has been hailed on both sides of the Atlantic as some of the most courageous and unflinching theological writing of recent years, charting his own path from the orthodox belief of his childhood to a radical death-of-God reading of Christian atheism. He is a sought-after speaker, and has presented at festivals throughout mainland Europe, the UK and the US. In 2013 he presented at the prestigious TEDx Exeter event on his work exploring our enduring fascination with pirates. He has also written and presented for BBC Radio 4, and is a regular contributor on technology in the Huffington Post. He has also written for Adbusters Magazine and the national education press in the UK. (Selected) Published Works: The Complex Christ; Other: Embracing Difference in a Fractured World; Mutiny! Kester Brewin was founder of one the UK's most creative and innovative alternative worship communities, Vaux. He went onto write The Complex Christ, a critically acclaimed book calling for an emerging Church. But over the following years he began to realise that Christianity was just another means of trying to escape his childhood pain. Tune into the podcast for a challenging and important critique of the Christian faith. This week I speak with highly acclaimed author and speaker, Kester Brewin. Kester recently spent two weeks in Los Angeles, speaking to various audiences about his new book, Getting High: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the Dream of Flight. We recorded this conversation LIVE on Saturday, August 6, at the Level Ground Headquarters in Pasadena California.
What Mutiny, Flight, and Getting High have to do with Human Need
In this episode of Freestyle Christianity you will get to listen to a talk given by Kester Brewin at the festival Wake in Belfast. The subject of Kester's talk was his recently published book Getting High: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the Dream of Flight. We are all born flightless, every one. After so many thousands of years each of us still drops into the world smooth-skinned and featherless.' Why have we never been content to keep our feet on the ground? In the 1960s this desire to get high exploded with the LSD counterculture and the Apollo missions. In this unique and dazzling book, acclaimed author Kester Brewin (MUTINY / AFTER MAGIC) explores the history of the human quest for transcendence, and how, following a family tragedy, it blighted his own life. Drawing on a huge cast of characters from the Montgolfier brothers to Renaissance artists, Hells Angels, astronauts, The Beatles, Gonzo journalists and dreaming hippies, GETTING HIGH is a wild trip into the ancient dream of flight, soaring through shamanic ritual, enlightenment science and punching a hole in what we think the 1960s was all about. Interwoven in all of this is Brewin's own story. Growing up in a mining village in Yorkshire, his father was the local vicar, the man tasked with lifting this subterranean community each Sunday and offer it a vision of the above. But this pressure to open heaven has terrible consequences for the family, and a tragic illness sends each of them flying. Skilfully linking ancient history, the story of the 1960s and his own battles with the yearning to 'get high,' this is an important and timely book with an urgent message about religion, the promises of technology, and our need to keep our feet on the ground.
Josef talks to Kester Brewin about technology and radical theology. The conversation explores how technology amplifies our desires and how it cannot live up to what it promises; rather then making us free, technology imprisons us. Kester's respons to this presumably disheartening thesis is a dirty, radical theology that does not only take serious the technology of religion but also the religion of technology. Freestyle Christianity is availiable on iTunes, Sticher and acast.
Kester Brewin is back on the podcast. He was part of a live podcast experience at Monkish Brewing company with his partners Peter Rollins & Barry Taylor. This triumvirate of Radical Theology is always a blast to hear and this time time is no exception. During the live event they explored the way in which Radical theology opens up possibilities for political activism. Ohh Kester also talks about technology, space exploration, and hippies. "What Would Paul Do?" That's the question and Peter Rollins and Barry Taylor are here to answer it Biblically. This is a seriously fun conversation from the Soularize cconference that I thought would be the perfect to share at the beginning of the year. For those who don't read atheist political philosophy...Paul is back, popular, and getting all sorts of attention. In our conversation we play out a number of these Pauline insights and then tackle a bunch of questions being asked in the church today. If you are interested in the philosophical discussion there is no better place to begin than St. Paul Among the Philosophers which is introduced and edited by Jack Caputo. It includes chapters by Zizek and Badiou (philosophers) and then responses form Christian scholars from across the disciplines. Stuff We Discuss...Paul, Crucifixion, Resurrection, Pete's new book, Hakim Bey's temporary autonomous zones, Kester Brewin, Occupy Wall Street condoms and T-Shirts, the Crisis of Capitalism, Red Letter Christianity, the End of History, Identity Politics, Missional Progressive Christianity, why we aren't 'making disciples' in church, and if the church should still gather after the Death of the Big Other God. Since this was recorded live in a room with a Keg of Dale Brothers Beer there are the occasional bumps from me pumping the keg. I put some soft jams underneath to help cut down the noise from the note taking audience. Follow the podcast, drop a review, send feedback/questions or become a member of the HBC Community.
