Two tech worlds meet to answer a pressing question: if AI can act for us, what should remain meaningfully human? In this episode, We've teamed up with Gareth Mitchell and Ghislaine Boddington from the Somewhere on Earth Podcast to compare notes on practical adoption, cultural nuance, and the messy, beautiful realities of bringing AI into daily life. Andrew Grill shares how enterprise leaders move from hype to “aha” moments, including a live case where a 17,000-cell SWOT analysis became actionable strategy in minutes. We dig into why projects stall—broken processes, outdated ROI, and thin literacy—and how smart training and transparent policies shift teams from pilots to outcomes. The conversation widens beyond boardrooms. Ghislaine traces the arc from early telepresence and immersive art to today's “body in the digital,” where trust, intimacy, and presence underpin healthy human-machine collaboration. We examine digital human twins, agentic AI that makes decisions on our behalf, and the ethics of agents negotiating with each other. Expect clear takes on governance, transparency, and the line between pattern-matched empathy and the real thing. We also explore global perspectives: AI ethics in the Nordics, smart-city lessons from Singapore, manufacturing in Japan, and the access gaps that keep billions offline.Media and learning are transforming too. Universities are moving from AI bans to guidance that requires prompt and output documentation, building accountability and critical thinking. On the creator side, we look at AI in podcast production and the next step—personalized listening that adapts to knowledge and time. Along the way, we share recommended episodes, from Karen Jacobsen's origin as the original Aussie Siri voice to Deborah Humble's high-wire opera story packed with lessons in resilience and preparation. If you're curious about technology but allergic to hype, this co-production brings grounded examples, human-centered design, and a global lens. Subscribe, share with a friend who needs a practical AI playbook, and leave a quick review with your biggest “aha” or open question—what would you never let an AI decide for you?Resources mentionedSomewhere on Earth PodcastThanks for listening to Digitally Curious. New research that's being presented at the American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress 2025 in 2025 shows how AI-driven evacuation systems, real-time medical data streaming, and autonomous rescue vehicles are reshaping combat medicine amid more than 390,000 reported injuries since Russia's invasion began. From triage algorithms that choose who gets evacuated first, to AI-designed prosthetics built for precision and recovery, this is tech meeting humanity in the most urgent way possible. Dr. Evgeni Kolesnikov's research shows how AI is redefining what's possible when machine learning meets medicine.

Developed in Mexico to address a health system struggling to meet the needs of an ageing population, Medsi AI is working alongside the government to expand access to care. With over half of healthcare spending coming directly from individuals and millions without coverage, this cutting-edge tool offers a glimpse into the future of affordable, accessible health diagnostics.Maes Negras: Creating opportunities for black mothers in BrazilWe also shine a light on Maes Negras, a Brazilian platform dedicated to helping black mothers secure employment, gain mentorship, and grow their businesses. Blockchain Revolution: How the Hive community is bringing clean water to villages in GhanaThis week we meet McSamm who fell violently ill from contaminated water in rural Ghana. He didn't just recover though, he revolutionized access to clean water. Partnering with Hive's blockchain community, he raised funds to install 22 boreholes in remote villages. These often solar-powered systems (minimizing electricity costs) now deliver safe water to 300,000+ people - with villagers maintaining ownership and young people learning blockchain skills for future projects.Jungle Guardians: Greenbug's AI sound sensors battle illegal mining & wildfires in South America's remote rainforestsUnusual noises and AI are stopping illegal logging and saving crops in Brazil. We met Greenbug founder Marcelo Vieira at Web Summit Rio and he revealed how Greenbug's AI-powered acoustic sensors listen 24/7 for threats in ecosystems like the Amazon. Why would a government deliberately silence its own citizens? In this episode of Somewhere on Earth, we speak with Tutu Alicante (EG Justice) and Felicia Anthonio (Access Now) about the shocking reality of one of the world's longest-running internet shutdowns. Digital rights groups are now demanding action - but will the world listen?  From oil giant to climate ally? How Petrobras is unlocking emissions data for the world What if the key to fighting climate change wasn't just more data - but making it accessible to everyone? In a groundbreaking partnership, Brazil's Petrobras and tech hub CESAR have transformed dense emissions reports into an interactive public dashboard tracking G20 nations' climate progress. Could making this complex scientific data easily accessible and understandable bring real change?

40 years ago scientists in Antarctica discovered a hole in the Ozone layer. The world acted quickly, phasing out harmful CFCs or chlorofluorocarbons. Evidence suggests the hole has been getting smaller. But in 2025, there are new pollutants threatening to slow progress. Eloise Marais is Professor of Atmospheric Chemistry and Air Quality at University College London and tells Victoria Gill about her work monitoring the impact of space travel on the Ozone layer. It's the first day of the traditional ‘bathing season' when wild swim spots are regularly tested throughout the UK summer. Victoria asks Professor of Environmental Microbiology and Health at Lancaster University, Roger Pickup to break down the science behind our water quality classifications. And May also means wildflowers. Dr Sarah Scott is pollinator ecologist and toxicologist at Cambridge university. She has a warning that planted in the wrong place, wildflowers could be harming bumble bees.Gareth Mitchell, broadcaster and lecturer in science communication at Imperial College London is in the Inside Science studio to bring Victoria new scientific findings which will shape our future.Presenter: Victoria Gill Producers: Clare Salisbury, Dan Welsh, Jonathan Blackwell Editor: Martin Smith Production Co-ordinator: Jana Bennett-Holesworth

The Disturbing Reality of AI-Generated AbuseA new study reveals nearly 35,000 publicly downloadable AI models capable of generating deepfake pornography—often targeting women and celebrities. These "model variants" can be tweaked to create millions of non-consensual intimate images, fuelling a growing crisis in digital exploitation. Researchers identified 35,000 deepfake model variants in public repositories, with each model being used to generate countless AI-generated explicit images of real people. While 35,000 models may seem small compared to the vast internet, each one represents a potential weapon for harassment. Experts warn that without stricter regulation, deepfake abuse could spiral further out of control. The study was led by Will Hawkins from the Oxford Internet Institute. He joins Gareth and Ghislaine on the show.    MySQL at 30: The Unsung Hero Powering Facebook, the Web & Your Data - The Database That Quietly Runs the InternetYou've probably never heard of it—but your data lives on MySQL. Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, this open-source database is the invisible backbone of Facebook, countless websites, and nearly every major online service.
