On this episode, fifth-generation California rancher and NCBA Past-President Kevin Kester joins to share what it was like standing with President Donald J. Trump at the White House during a press conference on the One Big Beautiful Bill. Kester explains how the One Big Beautiful Bill supports cattle farmers and ranchers by increasing the Death Tax exemption and expanding tax deduction and provisions that help producers keep more of their hard-earned money. Kester was at the White House in President Trump's first term to support the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, but now that bill is set to expire at the end of the year. To avoid a massive tax hike, Congress must pass the One Big Beautiful Bill. Kester also shares information on NCBA's advocacy in Washington and ways cattle producers can get involved in NCBA's grassroots policy process.

Category Visionaries

SiteWire is pioneering a new category in construction technology by combining financial progress tracking with visual job site documentation. With $3.2 million in funding, SiteWire is tackling one of construction's most critical pain points: cash flow. Through their mobile app and cloud platform, they've reduced the traditional 1-3 week construction loan disbursement process down to just two hours, dramatically increasing the likelihood of projects finishing on time and on budget. In this episode of Category Visionaries, Bryan Kester shares insights from his journey building SiteWire and his extensive Silicon Valley experience dating back to the early internet days. Topics Discussed: SiteWire's innovative approach to construction finance and virtual inspections The massive cash flow challenges that plague residential construction projects Bryan's journey from 90s internet consulting to VC to founding multiple companies The significant challenges of driving technology adoption in real estate and construction The dot-com crash of 2000/2001 and lessons from previous market cycles Why building relationships and trust is essential for GTM in construction tech The importance of being strategic and thoughtful about fundraising timing and valuation   GTM Lessons For B2B Founders: Innovate where you have personal domain expertise: Bryan leveraged his family background in construction and experience at Autodesk to identify a genuine market need. His personal experience building his own home directly informed SiteWire's value proposition around cash flow's critical importance. B2B founders should pursue opportunities where they have unique industry insights that help them identify non-obvious pain points. Embrace relationship-building as your core GTM strategy: In relationship-driven industries like construction, digital marketing often falls flat. Bryan explained, "This whole industry is driven by relationships and trust. What we've had to do is get boots on the ground, go to conferences, make friends. It's literally about making friends and establishing a relationship that you're not a shark." For B2B founders targeting traditional industries, prioritize building personal connections and industry credibility before expecting digital channels to deliver results. Be consultative where others are transactional: In industries dominated by transactional relationships, creating a consultative sales approach can be a strategic differentiator. Bryan noted, "A lot of folks, particularly in our industry, have never had a salesperson come along and be consultative and really focused on problems versus trying to ram something down their throats." B2B founders should train sales teams to lead with problem-solving rather than product-pushing when entering traditional markets. Avoid premature fundraising and valuation traps: Bryan warns against the "chase for magically high valuations" that can severely limit future options. "Valuation is a magic number. It makes you whole, makes the investor whole, and also keeps your options open down the road for doing different things." B2B founders should raise capital only when they have validated demand and have a clear path to accelerate, not as a vanity metric or accomplishment. Connect disconnected stakeholders to create value: SiteWire's core innovation lies in bringing together construction professionals and finance professionals who "got into their jobs for different reasons." Bryan explains, "Finance folks get into finance to be wealthy, and construction people do get in to be wealthy, but they also get in to be wealthy by working outside with their hands and actually staying away from technology." B2B founders should look for opportunities to create value by building bridges between stakeholders who struggle to communicate and collaborate effectively.   //   Sponsors: Front Lines — We help B2B tech companies launch, manage, and grow podcasts that drive demand, awareness, and thought leadership. www.FrontLines.io The Global Talent Co. — We help tech startups find, vet, hire, pay, and retain amazing marketing talent that costs 50-70% less than the US & Europe.  www.GlobalTalent.co

The High Priestess represents my guest on The Tarot Table today. The High Priestess is the second card in the Major Arcana of the tarot deck, typically numbered as II. She represents intuition, mystery, and the unconscious mind. The imagery on the card often includes a seated woman between two pillars: one black and one white, symbolizing duality and balance. She usually holds a scroll or book, indicating hidden knowledge or wisdom, and wears a crown or headpiece that signifies her connection to the divine or the spiritual realm. The High Priestess symbolizes inner knowledge and the power of the subconscious. She urges trusting instincts and listening to the inner voice. This card often symbolizes hidden or unrevealed elements, indicating unknown factors or secrets that need to be uncovered. The High Priestess is strongly connected to spiritual and esoteric knowledge, signifying a period of spiritual growth and exploration of more profound truths. Often associated with the feminine aspect of the divine, she embodies qualities such as patience, receptivity, and reflection rather than action. She represents my guest today, Lauren Kester.  Lauren Kester is a mindset coach and astrologer. After working on high-profile television shows like 30 Rock, The Good Wife, & Saturday Night Live, she left the entertainment business to help driven women break free from fear and anxiety to create the lives they want using mindset work and astrology. Aesthetics after Autonomy with Grant Kester

Money on the Left is joined by Grant Kester, professor of Art History at University of California, San Diego. We speak with Kester about his multi-decade career, researching and teaching the history of socially engaged art. Kester's scholarship underscores the limits and contradictions of the dominant modern Western tradition of aesthetics. Such aesthetics value “autonomy,” insisting that the artist, the artistic medium, or art as an institution ought to stand alone and outside of society and its corrupting influences. Paradoxically, autonomy in this tradition is supposed to secure art's political dimension by blunting and often deferring any claims to immediate social efficacy. Kester, by contrast, affirms what is variously called dialogical aesthetics or socially engaged art, a collaborative sensuous practice in public space, which aims to transform thought and action by forging complex relationships among artists and publics. Here, we focus on Kester's two recent books published by Duke University Press. In The Sovereign Self: Aesthetic Autonomy from the Enlightenment to the Avant-Garde (August 2023), Kester examines the evolving discourse of aesthetic autonomy from its origins in the Enlightenment through avant-garde projects and movements in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In Beyond the Sovereign Self Aesthetic Autonomy from the Avant-Garde to Socially Engaged Art (December 2023), Kester then shows how socially engaged art provides an alternative aesthetic with greater possibilities for critical practice. Instead of grounding art in its distance from the social, Kester demonstrates how socially engaged art, developed in conjunction with forms of social or political resistance, encourages the creative capacity required for collective political transformation. Throughout our conversation, we tease out affinities between Kester's scholarship and heterodox theories of public money and provisioning. Problematizing unquestioned desires to cordon off aesthetics from political economy, we call on artists and activists to contest, reconstruct, and build anew the forms of mediation that heterogeneously shape a shared sensuous life.  Visit our Patreon page here: https://www.patreon.com/MoLsuperstructureMusic by Nahneen Kula: www.nahneenkula.com

On March 6, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) adopted new rules to standardize climate-related disclosures for public business and public offerings. Hoping to provide investors with consistent and comparable information, the Commission's new rules require companies to disclose emissions and the expenses and losses associated with climate risks in annual filings and reports.  But critics immediately balked at the rules, questioning its legality and effectiveness.  So, how does the SEC define climate-related risks? How do their disclosure requirements compare to similar rules passed in the EU and California? And what are the critics saying?  This week host Bill Loveless talks with Shiva Rajgopal about the SEC's climate disclosure ruling and his Forbes' column on the topic, “The SEC's New Climate Rule Is A Reasonable Political Compromise In An Election Year”.   Shiva is the Kester and Byrnes Professor of Accounting and Auditing at Columbia Business School. His research interests span financial reporting, earnings quality, fraud, executive compensation and corporate culture. From 2017-2019, Shiva served as the vice dean of research for Columbia Business School and has been a faculty member at Duke University, Emory University, and the University of Washington.

In The Sovereign Self: Aesthetic Autonomy from the Enlightenment to the Avant-Garde (Duke UP, 2023), Grant Kester examines the evolving discourse of aesthetic autonomy from its origins in the Enlightenment through avant-garde projects and movements in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Kester traces the idea of aesthetic autonomy—the sense that art should be autonomous from social forces while retaining the ability to reflect back critically on society—through Kant, Schiller, Hegel, Marx, and Adorno. Kester critiques the use of aesthetic autonomy as the basis for understanding the nature of art and the shifting relationship between art and revolutionary praxis. He shows that dominant discourses of aesthetic autonomy reproduce the very forms of bourgeois liberalism that autonomy discourse itself claims to challenge. Analyzing avant-garde art and political movements in Russia, India, Latin America, and elsewhere, Kester retheorizes the aesthetic beyond autonomy. Ultimately, Kester demonstrates that the question of aesthetic autonomy has ramifications that extend beyond art to encompass the nature of political transformation and forms of anticolonial resistance that challenge the Eurocentric concept of “Man,” upon which the aesthetic itself often depends. Kaveh Rafie is a PhD candidate specializing in modern and contemporary art at the University of Illinois at Chicago. What Happened To The Marriage of Ruby & Kevin Franke?

Kevin Franke faced an agonizing revelation this past August. He found his wife, Ruby Franke, and their family therapist, Jodi Hildebrandt, detained, with his two youngest children in a healthcare facility for critical malnourishment treatments.    In the year leading up to this grim discovery, Kevin had only received infrequent communication from his now-estranged wife. This drastic shift in family dynamics traces back to the involvement of marriage counselor, Jodi Hildebrandt, in their lives. In a candid conversation with PEOPLE, Kevin's attorney, Randy Kester, expressed, “Kevin was taken aback. The allegations against Ruby and Jodi left him stunned. It dawned upon him the magnitude of deception he had been subjected to."    The couple, who once reveled in the limelight due to their "8 Passengers vlog" on YouTube, had amassed a dedicated following of approximately 2.5 million subscribers. Their content chiefly revolved around the daily adventures and life lessons of their six children. However, even this digital haven suffered a setback when the couple decided to part ways, a year before Ruby's dramatic arrest.    Eyewitness accounts and police allegations shed light on the distressing environment the Franke children were exposed to, particularly in Kevin's absence. With Ruby and the two youngest residing at Jodi's residence, there are serious accusations concerning the treatment of 12-year-old Russell Franke. Claims have emerged about him being physically restrained with ropes, and even more distressingly, of cayenne pepper and honey being deliberately applied to his injuries by Ruby and Jodi.    Diving deeper into Jodi Hildebrandt's background reveals a checkered professional history. She commenced her association with the Frankes in 2021. Prominently specializing in sex addiction, Jodi faced reprimands from state authorities back in 2012, owing to an improper relationship with a client. That very year, following her personal battles of a divorce and strained ties with her children, Jodi launched 'ConneXions'. Her venture, as advertised on her website, pledges to "empower individuals to thrive in their relationships," with an emphasis on liberating individuals from "distortions" to embrace "Truth, connection, and freedom."    This counselor-client relationship between the Frankes and Jodi intensified, culminating in a pivotal trip involving Ruby, Kevin, and another therapist. Post this journey, Ruby's perspective on her marriage had radically shifted. Recollecting this phase, Kester quoted Ruby's exact words to Kevin: "Your attitude is infesting the family." She firmly believed that their only recourse was separation. Kevin, despite these developments, continued attending several sessions a week with Jodi. In a turn of events, when their son Chad decided to reside with Kevin, Jodi intervened, advising separation. According to Kester, Jodi's influence permeated so deeply that Kevin became increasingly isolated, with Ruby being granted limited access to contact him.    However, red flags had been raised about the family earlier. In June 2020, social workers began probing into the Franke family dynamics, spurred by unsettling content on their YouTube channel. This included incidents like Ruby openly denying lunch to 6-year-old Eve and then 15-year-old Chad confessing to sleeping on a beanbag for a staggering seven months following a harmless prank on his sibling. Yet, these inquiries hit a dead-end as Utah's Division of Child and Family Services couldn't validate the abuse claims.    Recent times saw Ruby frequently shuttle between her residence in Springville and Jodi's home in Ivins, Utah. During one of these transitions, they were apprehended, following consistent efforts by an alert neighbor and the couple's estranged daughter, Shari, 20, to alert authorities. Voicing his concerns, the neighbor stated, “Child protective services conveyed that their hands were tied until a calamity occurred."    Currently, both Ruby and Jodi are incarcerated at Washington County Purgatory Correctional Facility, awaiting legal proceedings, while their counseling licenses remain suspended. Kevin, although interrogated, has not faced any charges. However, the debate on his role rages on. A concerned neighbor remarked, "Is Kevin culpable? Absolutely. His decision to vacate the home was critical."    In a landscape rife with digital celebrities, this distressing tale underscores the reality that not all that glitters online is gold. The Franke family's unraveling story serves as a reminder to always look beyond the screen. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE?

Ruby Franke's fall from grace sent shockwaves through the millions who faithfully followed her family-centric "8 Passengers" YouTube channel. The discovery of one of her six children, emaciated, covered in sores, and bound with duct tape, in Santa Clara, Utah, raised alarm bells and ended her career as a YouTube influencer.   Franke had always portrayed a picture-perfect life. "The Mormon mom appeared as if she led a loving, nurturing family life with a husband and a big brood of children," said a longtime viewer. However, that façade crumbled when alarming details emerged about her association with the controversial therapist, Jodi Hildebrandt, 54.    According to sources close to Franke, her demeanor began to shift after she started her association with Hildebrandt. A friend of Franke for over two decades revealed to Page Six, "Ruby's values took a drastic turn. Suddenly, she was telling lies and becoming increasingly distant, cutting off her family with seemingly no explanation."    Jodi Hildebrandt was well-known in Santa Clara as a licensed therapist through her organization, ConneXions. This institution pitched itself as an online educational platform designed to help individuals navigate relationship challenges, anxiety, and more. However, beneath this respectable exterior, darker currents flowed. Hildebrandt and Franke's close relationship led to rampant speculation, with some even drawing parallels to the iconic "Thelma & Louise."    As the duo ventured on numerous trips together, rumors started to swirl about the nature of their relationship. Randy S. Kester, who represented Franke's husband Kevin, stated that while there were murmurs, "I don't have any concrete evidence of a romantic relationship, other than some video content that showed them holding hands."    Franke's husband Kevin, who was previously a professor at Brigham Young University, echoed these sentiments. He believed that his wife's association with Hildebrandt significantly impacted their marital relationship. Franke became more distant, frequently leaving Kevin to care for their children while she traveled on business with Hildebrandt. Kester reported that "Kevin was supportive, hoping that these trips were part of Ruby's self-development journey."    Julie Deru, one of Franke's sisters, expressed her discomfort with Hildebrandt's teachings. "We were concerned about the messages Ruby started to propagate at family gatherings. They felt alien and contrary to what we knew."    Indeed, as time went on, Franke's content began shifting. Once filled with wholesome family moments, her channels were gradually dominated by Hildebrandt, with topics such as "tactics of deception," "establishing a truth declaration," and discourses against "lust."    The crux of the concerns revolved around ConneXions' dubious counseling practices. Kevin Franke himself was roped into a men's group supported by Hildebrandt. For over a year, he was subjected to what many describe as emotional manipulation, being labeled "greedy," "narcissistic," and "selfish." These sessions were believed to be the driving force behind Kevin's decision to move out, a move purportedly influenced by Hildebrandt.    However, perhaps the most shocking revelation came from Jessi Hildebrandt, Jodi's niece. In a heart-wrenching interview, she detailed her traumatic experiences while in Jodi's care as a teenager. Her stories of being tied up, blindfolded, and isolated for hours echoed the harrowing ordeal faced by Franke's child. Jessi declared, "Jodi firmly believes that shame should be punished severely."    Pam Bodtcher, described as "Jodi's surveillance," was another figure deeply involved in ConneXions. Jessi hinted at her complicit role, painting a picture of an intricate web of manipulation and control.    The dark saga culminated in August when the police were called to check on one of Franke's children. The subsequent investigation unveiled disturbing truths about what had transpired behind closed doors.    As the community grapples with this harrowing revelation, many believe that Hildebrandt was the mastermind. Franke's longtime friend summed it up: "While Ruby is not innocent, I believe there's hope for her to be rehabilitated. Jodi, however, is a different story."    This tale serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers lurking behind seemingly perfect facades and the importance of discernment in the world of online influence. The anticipated bail hearing for Ruby Franke, 41, and Jodi Hildebrandt, 54, originally set for Monday, was unexpectedly postponed just an hour before it was due to start. As the cloud of allegations surrounding the two Mormon podcasting partners grows darker, the legal system is making cautious steps, with the Utah State Court officials citing the "additional time needed to review copious amounts of discovery" as reported by KUTV.    Both women are currently facing severe accusations: each charged with six counts of felony child abuse. Arrested in late August, neither Franke nor Hildebrandt has yet entered pleas. Their legal teams remain silent, refraining from commenting to the media.    The arrest was spurred by a chilling 911 call. Officers were dispatched to Hildebrandt's residence in Ivins, Utah after a distressed neighbor reported a disturbing scene. He claimed that Franke's 12-year-old son turned up at his house, his body emaciated and covered in wounds, pleading for food and water. Following this, Franke's 10-year-old daughter was found in a similarly concerning state at Hildebrandt's home.    Reacting to these alarming revelations, Franke's oldest daughter, Shari, expressed her relief on Instagram. Sharing an image of the police outside their family house, she commented, "Today has been a big day. Me and my family are so glad justice is being served. We've been trying to tell the police and CPS for years about this, and so glad they finally decided to step up."    Ruby Franke, once a prominent social media figure, attracted nearly 2.5 million viewers to her YouTube channel "8Passengers." However, in 2022, the family ceased their vlogging activities. Franke's career took a controversial turn when she teamed up with Hildebrandt for the “ConneXions” podcast. Their shared "Moms of Truth" social media platforms began circulating contentious parenting advice. Alongside these controversial tips, clips from ConneXions displayed Franke making disturbing remarks on serious topics such as eating disorders, sexual assault, and immigration, further stoking public outrage.    In the wake of Franke's arrest, her four youngest children were placed under the protection of child protective services. Their father, Kevin Franke, separated from the family for roughly a year, has now returned to their Springville, Utah home. His attorney, Randy Kester, expressed to The Salt Lake Tribune their intent to reunite the children with their father. Kester remarked after a custody hearing, emphasizing the children's need to be with family, specifically his client, Kevin.    Interestingly, Franke's extended family, notably her three sisters who maintain a prominent social media presence, voiced their concerns. They collectively stated that behind the glitz and glamour of the public eye, they have "done everything [they] could to try and make sure the kids were safe."    Their joint statement is a poignant reminder of the incident's gravity: "Ruby was arrested which needed to happen. Jodi was arrested which needed to happen. The kids are now safe, which is the number one priority."    The rescheduled hearing date is yet to be confirmed but is anticipated to be held after October 5, 2023, as per Fox 13's reporting. The world watches closely, awaiting the court's verdict on this unsettling case, a grim reminder that not all is as it seems behind the curtains of social media stardom.
