What If Sober Was the New Cool? Breaking the Wine Culture Narrative with Kim BellasThis episode of Asking for a Friend is sponsored by Better Help. https://betterhelp.com/askingforafriendIs wine really the answer to midlife stress—or have we just been sold that story? In this episode of Asking for a Friend, I sit down with Kim Bellas, founder of the global movement Sober is the New Cool, to talk about what happens when midlife women challenge the “mommy juice” narrative and rethink their relationship with alcohol. At 52, Kim gave up wine—not because she had to, but because her son's epilepsy meds meant he couldn't drink. In a moment of clarity (wine glass in hand), she realized the message she was sending and committed to going sober for 3 months in solidarity. That was 12 years ago. What started as a short-term decision became a full-blown transformation—one that led to better sleep, stronger confidence, Fashion Week appearances (yes, really!), and a worldwide community of women just like her. This conversation will speak to any woman who's ever thought:“I don't have a problem, but maybe I drink more than I want to.”“I'm curious what life would be like without wine.”“I want to feel better, sleep better, and show up better—but without feeling judged.”✨ Whether you're sober-curious, alcohol-free, or simply sick of feeling like you need a drink to relax, this episode is your permission slip to explore something different.

Why did I want to talk with Kim Bellas of Sober Is The Cool? In 2013, her 15 -year-old started having seizures. Like most teenagers, he enjoyed going to parties and socializing. A significant aspect of these parties was the consumption of alcohol, and her son was unable to drink due to his seizures. As a mother, it was instinctive for her to make him happy by assuring him that alcohol wasn't necessary for him to enjoy himself. It IMMEDIATELY dawned on Kim how hypocritical she was being as she found herself frequently drinking wine. To prove a point to her son, she stopped drinking for 3 months. The time went by quicker than she anticipated and she decided to remain sober for another 3 months. Following 6 months of sobriety, Kim found herself happier than she had been in a while. What started as an example for her son became something Kim decided to commit to for her son and herself. It's now 2023, and Kim is proudly sober for 10 years. Sobriety has changed Kim's outlook on life for the better and has improved both her physical and mental well-being. I Kissed Alcohol Goodbye: Let’s Break Up With Booze Together!
Sober and Cool may not be two words that have traditionally gone together, but they do now! Meet Kim Bellas, a Montreal Mom whose son started having seizures at age 15 which quickly changed everything in their lives. As her son matured, Kim found herself telling him that alcohol wasn't necessary for a good time -- at the same moment she was holding a huge glass of wine! Immediately she vowed to give up drinking for 90 days and this ultimately led to a permanent change in her relationship with both alcohol and her children. Finally, Kim decided to take this example to the next level by creating "Sober Is The New Cool," an organization that connects people across the world with the resources that will be most helpful for their journey without booze. During our chat, Kim and I discuss these topics and more: * Changing the culture around youth & substance abuse * Making daily "I am..." statements to affirm our true worth * Navigating the social awkwardness of not drinking alcohol * The importance of connection and serving others in sobriety You can reach Kim on Instagram @sober.is.the.new.cool, or look up SITNC on Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn. In this episode of 'Beat Your Addictions' we interview Kim Bellas founder of www.soberisthenewcool.org ABOUT KIM BELLAS In 2013, my 15 -year-old started having seizures. Like most teenagers, he enjoyed going to parties and socializing. A significant aspect of these parties was the consumption of alcohol, and my son was unable to drink due to his seizures. As a mother, it was instinctive to make him happy by assuring him that alcohol wasn't necessary for him to enjoy himself. It IMMEDIATELY dawned on me how hypocritical I was being as I found myself frequently drinking wine. To prove a point to my son, I stopped drinking for 3 months. The time went by quicker than I anticipated, and I decided to remain sober for another 3 months. Following 6 months of sobriety, I found myself happier than I had been in a while. What started as an example for my son became something I decided to commit to for my son and myself. It's now 2021, and I am proud to announce that I've been sober for 8 years. Sobriety has changed my outlook on life for the better and has improved both my physical and mental well-being. My goal is to demonstrate that a SOBER LIFE is an exhilarating one, and anyone can reap the benefits. https://www.facebook.com/BeatYourAddi... "I know now that alcohol was not my friend," says Kim Bellas. Kim quit drinking to model alcohol-free living for her teenaged son, who has a medical condition that will require him to do the same. She didn't think her drinking was problematic until she experienced how great she felt with alcohol out of her life. Kim created a website www.soberisthenewcool.org to spread positive messages and encouragement to others who endeavor to be sober.
