In this episode of the Sober Podcast, we hear from Christina Ouyang, who embarked on her sobriety journey on January 14, 2020. At just 8 months into her sobriety, tragedy struck when her fiancé, the person who had encouraged her to seek treatment, succumbed to an overdose. This heartbreaking loss caused Christina to find strength and solace in her involvement with a 12-step program. She learned the power of taking one day at a time, which gave her the courage to endure the excruciating pain of her fiancé's passing. But her journey didn't end there; she went on to lose her best friend to a similar overdose, and then her grandfather.Through individual therapy, Christina navigated the profound grief of these three significant losses. She discovered the value of going with the flow of life, rather than against it, and found purpose in helping others with their problems, which helped her escape the confines of her own mind. One of the most profound gifts of sobriety for Christina has been the serenity and peace of mind it has offered her. Tune in to hear Christina's inspiring story of surviving loss in sobriety and finding hope, strength, and healing along the way.Sober Podcast works on defining recovery one story at a time. Our Soberlebrity guest today on Sober Podcast is Marine Veteran John Schrey who joins our host, Jamie Brickhouse to discuss how experience of being in the military can be both rewarding and traumatic. For John, his time in Afghanistan left him with PTSD, which led to drug abuse and homelessness upon his release from service. Through his training, he was taught to block out human emotion and focus on the mission, he found himself lacking empathy and caring once he returned to civilization.John's struggle with addiction had become overwhelming, to the point where he felt more at ease being homeless than being with his own family. After having had a spiritual awakening moment while still using, he was given the willingness to make an effort to get sober. With the right treatment and support, John found hope from his addiction and started to rebuild the relationships that mattered most to him.Through the help of a 12-step program and therapy, he was able to find hope and purpose in his life. He was able to get and stay sober. He learned the importance of walking in faith and doing the next right thing in his sobriety journey. Schrey's story is a reminder that even in the darkest moments, there is always a way to find light and purpose. Our SOBERLEBRITY guest on Sober Podcast is Maia Szalavitz. She's a neuroscience journalist, and has authored several books including: New York Times bestseller, Unbroken Brain: A Revolutionary New Way of Understanding Addiction, Help at Any Cost: How the Troubled Teen Industry Cons Parents and Hurts Kids, and her most recent publication - Undoing Drugs: The Untold Story of Harm Reduction and the Future of Addiction. With over 35 years of recovery, Maia is here to share her experience with seeing harm reduction grow over several years and how she views addiction as a learning disorder. We learn that when we focus on stopping people from getting hurt rather than stopping them from getting high, the statistics show that more lives are saved. When she first found sobriety in 1988, the AIDS epidemic was at an all-time high, people were dying. She shares on witnessing many being against supplying clean needles to IV substance users, which was right around the time that needle exchanges started to appear. Total abstinence was the only way to treat addiction Don't miss out on this mind-boggling interview based on several statistics that prove, when it comes to treating addiction, harm reduction is one of our most effective tools!Sober Podcast works on defining recovery one story at a time. Robin Bady is a narrative artist who works nationally and internationally, developing performances and educational projects for adults and children. She performs at spoken word venues, Fringe Festivals, theaters, and storytelling festivals as a solo artist; she also performs and records with the RagTag Band. With over 35 years of sobriety, Robin shares with host Jamie Brickhouse in detail her experience with learning how to be an artist in sobriety. Prior to getting sober and after finding sobriety, Robin was conflicted with the possibility of being an artist and being able to continue her healing journey. She gave up all her artistic outlets to focus on sobriety believing that art was part of her sickness and somehow connected to her addiction. She changed her life so much when first getting sober that she cut out all forms of art and the friendships in that circle. She ended up doing various odd jobs that she ended up resenting and was miserable. It wasn't until a medical condition which forced her to seek out vocal therapy that the artist in her was revived. Our Soberlebrity guest today is Ian Blessing who is the Co-Founder of All The Bitter: An alcohol free line of bitters. Ian joins host Jamie Brickhouse to discuss his own sobriety, his experience in the restaurant industry, and his alcohol-free bitters. If you love nonalcoholic drink options, you won't want to miss out on this interview! Ian has a long history of working in the restaurant industry of 15 years, where drinking is socially acceptable. From studying wine and spirits Ian found a job where he could taste and sell wine daily which led to a lot of justification of his alcoholism. Both Ian and his wife made the decision to quit drinking as of Halloween 2019. After having their son - hangovers, late nights, and all the other events associated with daily drinking started to be less attractive. After getting sober and relying on coffee, tea, and other alcohol-free options, Ian still craved the experience of enjoying a good drink. He started researching some non-alcoholic beers and wine. After seeing there weren't many options for alcohol free drinks, he dove headfirst into the non-alcoholic beverage market. Ian shares how his connection with others in the non- alcoholic drink community he has been able to find sobriety. His best lesson in sobriety has been learning that just because you quit drinking it will not solve all your problems. Sober Podcast works on defining recovery one story at a time. Evelyn Chesser joins us from Woodstock, VA. She is a 29-year-old mechanic who is here to recover out loud and share her experience with the drug Xylazine (Tranq) after being an IV heroin user for 12 years of her life. After coming close to dying from sepsis along with losing both of her legs due to severe necrosis, Evelyn is here alive and well to show others ‘we do recover! Hear the pain of her battle with opioids and the pain she went through during her drug abuse. Even after having experience with detoxing cold turkey several times off opioids, nothing could prepare Evelyn for her detox process with Xylazine. It was truly one of the most horrific experiences of her life. She experienced double vision, inability to sleep for several weeks, her body went into spasms, and she clenched so hard leaving her with 3 broken teeth. After ending up in the hospital, and being locked up in jail for a month, Evelyn was able to find peace from active addiction. She requested treatment and it brought her on her journey to finding recovery. Now in recovery, her greatest lesson has been the ability to accept life on life's terms, and when we are alone and isolated, we are in trouble. Shelby Christianson is a 37-year-old mom, wife, teacher, and adoptee. Being newly sober, Shelby started realizing how much being adopted contributed to her entire life & history of alcohol abuse. Growing up in a home where addiction and abuse were present from her adoptive father, she can see the effects of both nature and nurture. After meeting her biological family in 2021 she became aware of certain features that were most certainly inherited with people she had never met before. After finding more clarity and doing tremendous research in her sobriety process, Shelby found that perfectionism is a specific trait that is shared among all adoptees. Her best lesson learned while in sobriety is that she is enough. She can stand on her own 2 feet without using alcohol or any other substance as a crutch. Jay Barnard is the owner & founder of Hype Recovery – a coaching platform, a professional chef, and has over 15 years of recovery to share. After spending his first 2 years in a 12-step fellowship, with the help of a sober coach, Jay realized he needed something different. Quinn Stone felt alone, and unheard after being molested at the early age of 8. After experiencing a series of abusive events, Quinn turned to drugs for comfort. His addiction to heroin and other harsh substances, lead him to a bottom. Ripping and running through his addiction, and contemplating murder, Quinn found the willingness to change. Through trying various outlets and feeling pressured to choose a life of complete abstinence through involvement with a 12-step fellowship, he was able to find his own path of sobriety that works for him. About 2 years ago, Quinn started researching and experimenting with micro-dosing to find some relief from mental health issues. Through his practices, he has found freedom and increased spiritual awareness. Quinn's experience shows it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks about what method of recovery you choose; it is ultimately up to you. Tune in to hear an incredible journey in recovery. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for August 30, 2022 is: effulgence ih-FULL-junss noun Effulgence means "radiant splendor" or "brilliance." // The state capitol's golden dome shone with brilliant effulgence in the late afternoon light. See the entry > Examples: "His oil portrait silently observed us. His brother Robert who painted it didn't go for the obvious choice and recreate Dad's life-of-the-party effulgence, but instead captured his pensive look, as if he's listening intensely to what you are asking, and he may or may not answer you." — Jamie Brickhouse, The Huffington Post, 21 June 2022 Did you know? Need a shiny word to bust out at your next disco party, planetarium visit, or fireworks gathering? How about effulgence? It's not a shiny "new" word, having made its English language debut in the 17th century, but it does come from the Latin verb fulgēre, meaning "to shine." Effulgence isn't used for bog-standard brightness, however; it's reserved for shininess that dazzles, inspires, leaves you gobsmacked—in other words, "radiant splendor."
