Grocery Assistance Benefit Linked to Fewer Diabetes Complications

This week's Managed Care Cast episode features a conversation between The American Journal of Managed Care® and August 2026 authors Jeff Romine, PhD, and Kofi Essel, MD, MPH, about their study, "Insurance-Provided Grocery Assistance and Health Care Outcomes Among Patients With Diabetes." It examined the association between a commercial health plan's grocery assistance benefit and health care use and outcomes among members with type 2 diabetes, offering evidence in a space where prior food-as-medicine research has centered largely on Medicare and Medicaid populations. The benefit provided members between $1200 and $3000 annually, distributed across pay periods on a card usable at a range of grocery chains. Purchases excluded alcohol, tobacco, and preprepared foods, with an emphasis on fruits, vegetables, and other healthy items. Essel noted the design was a deliberate light touch, requiring no dietitian or health coach support, which he said made it more scalable than medically tailored meal programs that have driven much of the existing food as medicine literature. Romine, an economist by training, added that the appeal of studying a lighter intervention was the chance to observe how members made decisions about food and health without the more rigid structure of prior research. To evaluate the benefit, the team used a difference-in-differences design, comparing changes in utilization and clinical outcomes over time for members receiving the benefit against a control group of members with type 2 diabetes who were not eligible. Romine highlighted 3 main results: a 3.1% decrease in diabetes complications, no significant change in overall health care utilization, and improved medication adherence. He said the utilization finding was a positive surprise, since it suggested members retained access to needed care even within a narrower network. Essel pointed to a secondary finding as especially notable: the largest reduction in diabetes complications occurred among members living in lower socioeconomic areas, indicating a potential role for grocery assistance in narrowing health disparities. He emphasized that Elevance Health's approach to food as medicine considers both diet-related chronic conditions and social drivers of health such as food and nutrition insecurity, rather than treating them as separate levers. Looking ahead, Essel said future iterations of the benefit could be strengthened by tailoring groceries to individual cultural and dietary needs, adding nutrition education such as medical nutrition therapy or culinary counseling, and integrating the benefit more closely with primary care and specialist providers. "We are incredibly excited to see what we've seen here, and we can continue to build off of these learnings across the board," Essel concluded.

Altium Develop brings the full Altium Designer experience — plus multi-board and harness design and cloud collaboration — to individual designers and small teams, without paying for enterprise features you'll never use: https://www.altium.com/develop?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=ontrack-podcast&utm_content=altium-is-coming-home-to-the-designer After 40 years as effectively a single-product company, Altium has repackaged its offering into Altium Develop, Teams, and Enterprise — and a lot of individual designers are asking what it means for them. In this episode of the Altium OnTrack Podcast, host Zach Peterson sits down with Lawrence Romine, senior director of marketing at Altium, to explain the "homecoming": a deliberate return of focus to the individual PCB designer who made Altium Designer the industry standard in the first place. Lawrence traces the company's story from its founding in Hobart, Tasmania, through the rise of Altium 365 during COVID, to why the enterprise pivot left some solo designers feeling left behind — and how the new packaging is meant to fix exactly that. You'll get a clear breakdown of the three offerings — Develop (a PCB-centric, "you choose it" proposition for up to five users), Teams (out-of-the-box collaboration), and Enterprise (fully governed, tailored deployments for regulated industries like automotive, medical, and aerospace) — all built on the same Altium Designer and Altium 365 you already know. Lawrence and Zach dig into pricing , why you shouldn't pay for capabilities you'll never use, how Altium prioritizes new feature development, and a hint at a new Altium Designer release that should feel a lot more like the big annual splash releases of 2015–2020. If you're an individual designer, a contract shop, or a small team wondering where you fit, this one's for you.

In this episode of the Woodpreneur Podcast, host Jennifer Alger sits down with three team members from Edmund Allen Lumber out of Illinois: Nick Morrison, Sales Manager; Brian Studebaker, Millwork Manager; and Brandon Romine, Marketing Director. Together they reveal how a 129-year-old cedar and Douglas fir wholesaler has evolved into a full-service custom millwork operation that regularly takes on projects nobody else will touch. The company serves a dealer network of roughly 450 customers across Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Indiana, sourcing the bulk of its Western Red Cedar from Canadian mills and manufacturing everything else in-house. Brian walks through the millwork department's capabilities, from a 54-inch McDonough resaw and six-headed molder to a CNC that lets them replicate any historical molding profile. Brandon explains how he moved from sales into marketing and rebuilt the company's web and Instagram presence to solve a recurring problem: customers kept saying, "I didn't know you did that." The standout story is a clock tower restoration in Madison, Wisconsin. Lightning struck the tower, and the team had to replicate nine or ten unique molding profiles, fabricate stack-laminated corbels, and get everything hoisted by crane a hundred feet in the air while watching pieces swing in the wind. It captures exactly what Edmund Allen Lumber does best: the work nobody else wants to figure out. The conversation also covers the custom design process from architect sketch to final CAD, the economics of quoting without charging design fees, tariffs pushing cedar costs up as much as 45 percent, and the shift from new single-family construction toward remodels and multifamily. The team's message is simple: if you can dream it, they can probably make it. In the early hours of June 30, 1987, Boise resident Clinton Sparks was awoken by someone pounding frantically on his storm door. A moment later, Sparks heard a loud scream in the distance, and he went inside to call 911.Although he didn't know it at the time, what Clinton Sparks heard was the last desperate cry of twenty-one-year-old Preston Murr, Two of Murr's associates, Daniel Rodgers and Daron Cox, were arrested and tried and convicted for the murder. The trial and conviction should have been where the story ended, but for the house on Linden Street where the murder occurred, it was only the beginning. Since Murr's tragic death more than thirty-five years ago, the house has become a source of local legends, with claims ranging from the appearance of ghostly apparitions to blood inexplicably dripping down the walls. As a result, Boise's “Murder Mansion” has become known as one of the most haunted houses in America.Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!!ReferencesEnsunsa, David. 1987.
