This week, we herald the return of Steven Spielberg and one more foray into the alien sci-fi genre with Disclosure Day. Those expecting blockbuster thrills might be a little thrown to instead receive a talky, late-style plea for empathy and the transformative power of truth. The question, however, is if it's too late. We discuss Spielberg, his recent oeuvre, and the million things he has on his mind with Disclosure Day.
Welcome to Multiverse News, your source for information about all your favorite fictional universes.Everything old is new again, especially at this week's box office. The Wayans Brothers' nostalgia-driven sequel Scary Movie opened to a franchise best of $55 million. Unfortunately for Masters of the Universe, the 80s-tv show inspired live action adaptation barely scraped more than $29 million - a true bust for a film that cost more than $170 million to make. Horror darlings Obsession and Backrooms are still ruling the roost at theaters, both having crossed over the $200 million threshold this past weekend. Here's the news you didn't know you wanted, Hugh Jackman is set to star in a Ridley Scott-directed adaptation of the truly classic novel Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. Adolescence writer Jack Thorne will pen the script that stars Jackman as the pirate Long John Silver himself. The original novel was published in 1883 and has been adapted many times. The project is ready to be bid on by all studios. Netflix has announced an official title and revealed a logo for an upcoming Ghostbusters animated series which will officially be titled Ghostbusters: Nightshift. The series is expected to debut sometime in 2027. The upcoming John Wick spin off series currently titled Caine has added Bill Nighy, Dacre Montgomery, and Mason Thames to the cast. The series is being directed by martial arts master Donnie Yen and is currently in production in Budapest and Hong Kong. Netflix has revealed a first look at Scooby Doo from the upcoming live action Scooby Doo series which will premiere sometime in 2027. A short teaser was also released online to make the reveal. This will be the first time the iconic character will be played by an actual dog. Deadline has reported that Jason Momoa is departing PlayStation Productions and Sony Pictures' film adaptation of Helldivers, based on Arrowhead Game Studios' video game franchise, from director Justin Lin. The reason for his departure is unknown.

What do Hannibal Lecter, clickbait, and the current media hellscape have to do with The Devil Wears Prada 2? Find out by tuning in.

Jeff is on vacation this week, so it's up to Derek and Amir to pull off the rare double feature episode. With millions of students beginning their summer vacation, theaters across the country are raising the stakes tocontend in the fiercely competitive market. As of Sunday, the summer box office—the year's longest movie season, lasting from June 1 to Aug 31—has raked in over 2.54 billion yuan ($354.5 million), close to last year's 2.825 billion yuan during the same period, according to the showbiz information live tracker Maoyan Pro. Currently topping the summer charts is the crime film She's Got No Name, starring A-list actress Zhang Yizi. Inspired by a 1945 domestic violence case, the film depicts an abused wife who murdered her husband in Shanghai. Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning, the eighth installment of Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise's long-running espionage action franchise, has taken the second spot, followed by the dinosaur-themed sci-fi blockbuster Jurassic World Rebirth.《任务:不可能》是好莱坞超级明星汤姆·克鲁斯长期从事间谍活动系列的第八部,排名第二,紧随其后的是以恐龙为主题的科幻大片《侏罗纪世界重生》。A total of 104 films have been released or are set to debut this summer, with animated films—a family-friendly genre—emerging as one of the season's biggest draws. Japanese animated film Detective Conan: One-Eyed Flashback, and Endless Journey of Love, a Chinese animation feature about the romance between an assassin and a fishing village girl, have respectively ranked as the fourth and sixth highest-grossing titles of the summer. Highly anticipated upcoming animated films include Curious Tales of a Temple, which is an innovative retelling of Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) novelist Pu Songling's masterpiece Liaozhai Zhiyi (Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio), and The Legend of Hei 2, which will once again bring to life the titular black cat demon—a shape-shifter capable of transforming into an adorable boy. With more live-action tentpoles gearing up for the lucrative season, highlighted projects also include Dongji Rescue, based on the true story of Chinese fishermen rescuing British prisoners of war from the sinking Japanese cargo ship Lisbon Maru in the 1940s, and The Lychee Road, which fictionalizes a Tang Dynasty (618-907) low-level official's difficult mission to transport the fruit from which the movie's title is taken. The summer season is heating up with a variety of genres and themes," said Rao Shuguang, president of the China Film Critics Association. Despite the Chinese film market facing various challenges—from the unprecedented expansion of short videos to decreasing investment—domestic filmmakers have been actively developing new methods to attract and resonate with audiences, he added. A healthy and mature market isn't just about runaway hits like Ne Zha 2—it's about having a steady stream of high-quality films across all genres. Earlier this week, American entertainment company Fandango published a study that surveyed moviegoers, casual and loyal, on their viewing habits. Joining us, alongside our critics Lael Loewenstein and Manuel Betancourt, is Deadline business editor Dade Hayes.
