In this episode of The Luke Branquinho Show, Luke catches up with steer wrestler Justin Shaffer and his breakaway roper wife, Katie Shaffer! Like Luke and his family, the Shaffers, are now living in Hico, Texas. They have become Luke and his family's longtime friends. Justin has helped train Luke's son, Cade, as an up-and-coming steer wrestling star. Also, Jason was the last person Luke traveled with—and is his favorite traveling partner! Justin has built a successful rodeo career, but he credits much of that success to the incredible support of his friends and family, who have helped him both in and out of the arena. From traveling partners to loved ones who always have his back, Jason shares just how important his inner circle has been in his journey. They reminisce about life on the road, the wild times (and tough times) of competing, and what it's like balancing rodeo and family. Katie shares her journey of supporting Justin on his road to the NFR, while Justin reflects on his steer wrestling career and their life together in Texas.

Readings for the Feast of Epiphany - Isaiah 60:1-6; Matthew 2:1-12We've heard these readings before. Like family and close friends, they can become so familiar, we don't see or hear them anymore. We already have them figured out. But God often comes through the unexpected. Like Luke, who had the first acknowledgment of Christ's role be proclaimed by shepherds, Matthew also has the outsider as the first to reveal Christ's Lordship. But Matthew goes one step further. He invites "new-agey" nature-reading foreigners to be the ones to actually see. And when they come in contact w/ the religious elite of the time, they are seemingly patronized and sent on their way. More crack pots coming through. And those elites missed what was right in front of them. As always, special thanks to my daughter, Bridget, for her creating and performing of our intake and outtake music. And continued thanks to all of you for inviting me into your lives - at least your headphones and car stereos. I'm humbled and honored. If you like the podcast, I invite you to rate it and/or pass it along to someone you think would also enjoy it. Have a question or comment? I can be reached at pdjoezenk@gmail.com

March 26, 2024 Daily Devotion: "We Are Witnesses" Luke 24:42-45 The Passion Translation They handed him a piece of broiled fish and some honeycomb. And they watched him eat. Then he said to them, “Don't you remember the words that I spoke to you when I was still with you? I told you that I would fulfill everything written about me, including all the prophecies from the law of Moses through the Psalms and the writings of the prophets.” He supernaturally unlocked their understanding to receive the revelation of the Scriptures. Jesus is who He says He is. He is reliable and trustworthy, and so is His Word. We have the privilege of being able to read the accounts of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection, as well as being witnesses ourselves of what He has done in our own lives. Like Luke shared with Theophilus, we can—and must—tell others who Jesus is and what He has done. We are witnesses of these things. Let's proclaim the gospel to all the nations.     --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/gerzon-etino/message

Selling Jesus
Mandy the Biblical Scholar & Tom the Seminary President - Christians Who Sell Jesus

Selling Jesus

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 17, 2024 52:00

This series on "Christians Who Sell Jesus" takes profiles that represent real-world scenarios wherein well-meaning individuals are actively engaged in the Jesus trade, often unwittingly. Mandy is an Old Testament scholar and the author of some of the best commentaries on Job and Amos. Both are published by Zondervan and don't cost more than other commentaries. She's also employed by a legacy Bible institute and teaches several courses, including biblical Hebrew. She regularly tells her friends that she has a dream job and couldn't be more grateful for the opportunity to do what she loves. People respect her and look up to her as a nearly perfect model of someone who has given her life to God's service, blessing readers and students year after year. Unfortunately and unwittingly, Mandy is selling Jesus. The problem for her, like many others, is the fact that she has simply never thought about copyright or the status quo of selling Christian teaching. Even though she is a deep, critical thinker and has a PhD, she hasn't taken the time to think biblically about whether it's right to sell her commentaries on God's Word or require students to pay tuition before being able to learn about the Bible from her. She has accepted an old, widespread system without a second thought, assuming that the system is biblical because so many other people have bought into it. If you were to challenge her to think differently and reconsider how biblical the system is, she would dismiss any contrary ideas as “fringe” and not worthy of her time. Like Luke (above), she's comfortable with the way things are. In this way she resembles antebellum Christians who were extremely comfortable with the slave trade, and many historic Roman Catholic priests who were comfortable selling baptism. Besides, she might lose her dream job if she started to take what Scripture says about money and ministry seriously. Better to leave well enough alone, and if anyone brings it up, simply silence them by forcing certain parts of Scripture to support the status quo of commercializing Christianity. Ignorance is bliss. Tom follows in the footsteps of many seminary leaders who have gone before him since the seminary was founded in 1892. He has inherited a system and structure that is typical of nearly all seminaries around the world: students must pay tuition if they want to receive spiritual guidance and biblical teaching. Thankfully, the seminary has some endowments that allow it to keep its course prices down, but Tom is well aware that there are many people who never attend his seminary because of the cost. Although there are scholarships available, they are limited and usually reserved for international students. Sometimes at night he thinks about how nice it would be if professors could simply be like missionaries and raise support, freeing themselves to teach without charging students money. Or why couldn't there be more bivocational professors who support themselves with another job like Paul did and offer their services to the seminary for free? But then he shakes his head and laughs at how impossible his idealistic musings are. The seminary has been operating the same way for too long. Tradition can't be broken. There are too many people who would hate his ideas and keep them from even being tried. Why bother with a pipe dream? sellingjesus.org | thedoreanprinciple.org | copy.church

Hill House had stood for 90 years and might stand for 90 more. Silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House and whatever walked there, walked alone." Thus begins one of the most chilling, most frightening, truly unforgettable horror films ever. Dr. Markway is an anthropologist with a special interest in psychic phenomena who wants to try a true exercise in terror. Intrigued by the legend of Hill House, he invites two women, psychic researchers, to join him in his adventure. Mrs. Sannerson, who has inherited the old mansion, is suspicious of Dr. Markway's intentions and insists that her young nephew Luke go along with the group. Luke is a skeptic about the supernatural, until he enters Dr. Markway's eerie world. The classic forerunner of such films as Poltergeist and The Shining, The Haunting is a hair-raising screen rendition of Shirley Jackson's riveting gothic novel, The Haunting of Hill House. Like Luke, you may not believe in ghosts, but you cannot deny the terror of The Haunting! .......................................................................................................................... Today's Reading: Luke 10:1-9Daily Lectionary: Deuteronomy 17:1-20; Matthew 14:1-21“Heal the sick in it and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.'” (Luke 10:9)In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Before Luke became a missionary and an evangelist, he was a doctor. He bandaged wounds, set broken bones, and prescribed medicines. He did his best to make bodies whole and to extend temporal lives. When Jesus preached, He also healed the sick, not with bandages and medicine, but with a word or a touch. He gave that power to the Twelve, and then to the 72, and after Pentecost to many other Christians, especially to those who held some office in the Church. Since Luke was a companion of Paul and an evangelist, he probably received that same spiritual gift. And what a gift, especially for a physician! I am sure Luke had dreamed of having such power, so that he could cure any patient that came to him. What fame and what fortune! A doctor who can heal you with a touch would go down in history as the greatest doctor of mankind!Of course, Luke was not given such a gift so that he could continue his practice, nor was he to use it for fame and fortune. The miraculous healings of the New Testament served a specific purpose: They advertised that Jesus possesses and distributes the final cure for death. We see this in Luke 5:30-32, where Jesus compared Himself to a physician: “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.”) Then, He explains that He is talking about sinners. Jesus comes to heal the soul by taking away our sins. After making us right with God on the Cross, Jesus steps out of the grave to grant us eternal life. “With his wounds we are healed,” (Isaiah 53:5). Ministers are not given the gift of healing today. Your pastor cannot take away your cancer with a touch, but he can take away your sins with a word! Like Luke, he is a physician of the soul, for he carries on his lips the Good News about Jesus. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.Almighty God, our Father, Your blessed Son called Luke the physician to be an evangelist and physician of the soul. Grant that the healing medicine of the Gospel and the Sacraments may put to flight the diseases of our souls that with willing hearts we may ever love and serve You; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. (Collect for the Feast of St. Luke)-Pastor Alexander Lange is pastor of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Albany, Oregon.Audio Reflections Speaker: Rev. Luke 15 contains three parables, and the themes are repentance and joy. The third parable about the prodigal son does something different than the previous two. Instead of using the words repent and joy, we get to see repentance and joy demonstrated by the father and son. The son is never said to repent, but we get an answer to the question, "What does repentance look like?" by examining his actions. This allows us to draw out wonderful lessons about to apply to our lives. https://youtu.be/4h1Guo_f6Ro The prodigal son is never said to repent, but we get an answer to the question, "What does repentance look like?" by examining his actions. In what ways did the son show that he was willing to accept the consequences of his sin? In what ways does repentance give hope? Sermon Notes The title of this morning's sermon is, “What Does Repentance Look Like?” On Sunday mornings we're working our way through Luke's gospel verse by verse and we find ourselves at Luke 15:18. Please stand with me for the reading of God's Word. We will start at verse 11 for context. Luke 15:11 And he said, “There was a man who had two sons. 12 And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of property that is coming to me.' And he divided his property between them. 13 Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took a journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in reckless living. 14 And when he had spent everything, a severe famine arose in that country, and he began to be in need. 15 So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed pigs. 16 And he was longing to be fed with the pods that the pigs ate, and no one gave him anything. 17 “But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father's hired servants have more than enough bread, but I perish here with hunger! 18 I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Treat me as one of your hired servants.”' 20 And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. You may be seated. Let's pray. Look at verse 18… Luke 15:18 I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. Notice the words, “I will set out and go back to my father.” And this brings us to lesson one… Genuine repentance (Lesson One) seeks to return to the Father. It seems like the son tried going just about every other place he could. He was even willing to hire himself out to a Gentile and feed his pigs. But, finally,

In this week's sermon we pick up in Luke 13: 18-21. Pastor Austin dissects Jesus's parables on the insignificant mustard seed and the invisible yeast and how they represent the Kingdom of God. When we examine the text, we see that Jesus is not calling the proud, strong, seemingly perfect to an all out sprint to Heaven. Rather, He calls the unassuming, weak, broken sinner into a slow, consistent, and oftentimes unseen growth alongside Him.Want to connect with us? In the familiar story of Zacchaeus, we see that Jesus invites us to see who He really is and what He's really about. Will you respond to His invitation and seek the real Jesus for yourself?
