MY ENTREPRENEUR ROLLER COASTER 2024 is a perfect example of my own roller coaster. This year started with two of my coaching clients and one of my editing clients not renewing for another year. I loved each of them. It was painful and felt like a breakup. I knew they had amazing potential. Each of them had achieved so much to this point. The progress was fantastic. Over the year, I had a few amazing calls with coaches who didn't sign up for the coaching I felt would help them in such a big way. Each of them had their own reasons. We continue to stay in touch. I believe the time will eventually be right for them. THE FUN PART OF THE RIDE Then there were call like my most recent client who couldn't enroll fast enough. He has been in my world for a few years, and we finally got on a coaching call together. On that call, he signed up and has been knocking it out of the park. It feels so great. Each time I get on a call with my other clients, they tell me of all the great progress they are making and the lives they are changing. I just wrapped up a coaching program helping Neil and Taylere launch their "The Leadership Pause" podcast. They sent me an email that said, "Thank you for everything, Erik! We appreciate all your guidance. This course was terrific." It has happened in my business year after year. A few years ago it was really getting to me to the point I was going to throw in the towel. THE DATA Then one day I looked at the data. I noticed a trend in my business. Listening to my podcast tends to dip in the summer. My workshops are less attended in the summer. Fewer clients sign up in the summer. When August arrives, my downloads increase. I have more speaking opportunities. My workshops have great crowds. And more clients enroll. It's nothing I'm doing. The entrepreneur roller coaster is just the nature of my business. That's when I realized I didn't need to be scared of that first roller coaster drop. It always happens. Then comes the fun of the turns and loops. Once I started understanding the entrepreneur roller coaster is natural, podcasting and business became much more fun. WE ARE ALL ON THE ENTREPRENEUR ROLLER COASTER I was on a summit this week. During a roundtable discussion with the other experts who were speaking, I discovered we all have our own entrepreneur roller coasters. We all have our own journey. Don't compare yourself to others. Enjoy your path. The entrepreneur roller coaster is normal. We are all on it. You need to learn to enjoy the ride. Step back and examine your roller coaster, so you can anticipate the drops. Anticipate the dips, turns and thrills, so you can enjoy the journey. Stop looking at your downloads this week compared to last week. Look at this month compared to the same month last year and the year before. Do you see seasonality in your podcast? Is the roller coaster natural in your business? Start planning the next year with the entrepreneur roller coaster in mind. When you see the dip in the history, plan things to embrace and counter the dip. What is more important: maintaining your current clients or growing your business? – In classic CEO-form, Adam converts this either/or question into a both/and question, specifying that you need to strike a balance between investing in your existing customers while also marketing yourself to prospects. The best way to do this is by providing products, services, or thought leadership that is of value to people, which will cause your business to be top-of-mind for them. What is the best strategy for converting a “no” into a “yes”? – Adam will have a lot to say on this topic in his upcoming book, but his main piece of advice is to know the no. Understand that some people will default to “no” out of fear – either of the unknown or of missing out on something else – so your best bet is to give value to them in love. If you were dropped off in an unfamiliar city and told to start a business, what kind of business would it be, and how would you grow it? – The key to starting any business is to talk to the people, to get to know what is working for them, what isn't working for them, what they need, and how they need to receive it. You won't be successful without customers, and you won't have customers if you aren't providing them with a product or service that solves a problem for them. The same concept applies to real estate; talk to people, get to know local business owners, start telling the stories of the community, and watch as clients come your way. What is your best advice for getting unstuck in business growth? – Adam points out that stagnation or issues in business typically reflect personal struggles, so before you can work on your business, you have to work on yourself. Last week we discussed "Defining Success"…how we define success for ourselves. What that looks like for us as individuals and we also touched on failure and what that looks like as well. You can't have one without the other, right? Today we are going show you how you can be a "Goal Digger". Not a Gold Digger. But a GOAL DIGGER So first thing's first, what the hell is a GOAL Digger? Read Excerpt: Neffi, a blogger posted in the Buzz Blog that… A “GOAL digger” …is someone who is ambitious and clear of the things they want. Goal diggers have dreams, goals and aspirations for independence, success, and their version of happiness. They “dig in” and do the work to become the person they strive to be. Being a “GOAL digger” is all mindset. It's the basic of setting goals for your life and doing what it takes to achieve them. Whether they are goals set in your education, your career, your personal life, or some other area. You are setting goals for whatever it is you desire that will define success to you. Tackling obstacles and burdens that may get in your way, being determined, persevering, sometimes a little suffering with blood, sweat, and tears. A GOAL digger never stops working towards their goals. What have you done to get better today? Q: What do you think about Neffi's definition of a Goal Digger? Goals provide you with direction, purpose and motivation. They are the destination in the your mental GPS that allows to see where you want to go in life or business. Without goals, you're just aimlessly moving through life, business is just one sale after another without any true purpose. This can be frustrating if you are trying to achieve something specific. This typically ends in frustration, disappointment and in severe cases, depression. Q: How did you overcome that obstacle and how were you able to double your earning potential in just a few months? Q: Have you ever tried to achieve something without having a specific goal in mind? What happened and how did that play out? One of the three critical criteria for being a Goal Digger, is that a Goal Digger sets VERY, VERY SPECIFIC goals. The more specific the better. A vague or wishy-washy goal is nothing more than a desire. A lot of people have heard about SMART goals, SMART being: S-Specific, M-Measurable, A-Attainable, R-Relevant, T-Timebound Another way to look at it is through the PURE format which is: P-Positive, U-Under your control, R-Right sized, E-Ecological Q: How do you set goals to achieve what you want to achieve in your personal life? Professionally? In business? Example of weak goals (Desire) I wanna new car I wanna bigger house I want a better job I want to lose weight Example of strong goals I want a 6-Series Covnertibel BMW M3 I want a 4 BR home in Manteca with a pool and it must be close to a good school I want a position as an Operations Manager for Walmart making $95K a year with good bennies I want to lose 30 pounds of fat and gain 10 pounds of muscle, dropping my waistline from a 42 to 32 When goals are not quantifiable how can you assign value? I want to be happy as I was when I was in college Q: Have you ever set a goal without a timeline? Did you achieve that goal? Have you ever over achieved a goal that you set that was too low? What did you learn from the process?Example of poor timelines One of these days Eventually Next year Putting your goals in writing is a great way to commit to yourself what you intend to accomplish. People who write down their goals are almost 42% more likely to achieve their goals. Q: Do you commit your goals to writing? What does that look like? How often are they revisited? Do you only do this for business or also personally? How has this impacted your success? Journaling Balanced Scorecard Strategic Objectives Q: Have you failed to achieve a goal you set? Why did you fail and what did you learn from that failure? Read Quote: Darren Hardy says, "If you are not making the progress that you would like to make and are capable of making, it is simply because your goals are not clearly defined" Q: Either of you set goals got 2021 yet? What will that look like? As we bring the infamous 2020 year to a close in just a matter of weeks, many of you will begin setting the same old new years resolutions you always set. You know, Lose weight, save money, travel more, etc. We've all done it. This year, I challenge you to do a few things differently. Take out your pen and paper or write this down in a note app: Set a simple theme for the year. This year our theme is Health and Wealth. Last year it was "Show up and Be Present" in honor of one of Crystal's very close friend that passed. (Crystal can add) Your theme can be what ever 1 or 2 things are most important for you that you plan on focusing on. Use this theme to align your decisions throughout the year. Regularly discuss your theme with you power circle and hold each other accountable when you are not acting in alignment of that theme.Set SMART and specific goals that align with your WHY and your values. For example, my WHY is family. My value is also family, one of my goals for 2021 is going to be to visit my son in Texas in February of this year.
