This morning we're breaking down the latest news in the ever-unfolding Jeffrey Epstein saga as Bill Clinton testifies about his relationship and involvement. What will be revealed? What has already been confirmed? And what does this mean for the broader web of powerful names connected to this case? And let's be honest, while past presidents are being questioned, many Americans are wondering whether people currently in power (looking at you, Donald Trump) will ever face meaningful scrutiny or accountability for their own connections. Then we pivot to a bombshell media shakeup: Netflix has reportedly backed out of a bid for Warner Bros., clearing a path for Paramount to acquire it. What does that mean for the future of media consolidation? Who controls what we watch and how worried should we be. Joining us to unpack it all is Founding Editor of Mediaite.com Colby Hall along with Semafor's Max Tani and Ben Smith. This episode is sponsored by 120Life. On Thursday, February 19, speakers dug into the latest revelations in the Epstein saga, including high-profile arrests abroad, and asked the pressing question: why is accountability happening overseas while America stalls? In this urgent Big Tent conversation, Camaron Stevenson and Nina Burleigh of COURIER, moderated by Kimberly Atkins Stohr of "The Boston Globe", explored what the document releases reveal about power, money, and political protection—and how entrenched interests may be slowing justice at home. They examined congressional inaction, the role of media pressure, and whether partisan gridlock is shielding key figures. The discussion made clear that transparency is not automatic; it's forced by public demand. Most importantly, this wasn't just analysis—it was a call to action. Attendees were urged to push representatives for full, un-redacted disclosures, support investigative journalism, and keep sustained pressure on institutions that would prefer silence.Accountability isn't a spectator sport—it's a citizen's responsibility.Want to do something tangible to help protect democracy? In the aftermath of the shooting, a fundraising campaign supporting the ICE agent involved has drawn significant support from MAGA, including a large contribution from Bill Ackman, and a public post by Megyn Kelly. Are these contributions incentivizing murder? What does this mean for accountability? And will MAGA and the Trump administration continue to spread misinformation? This week on Hafta, Newslaundry's Abhinandan Sekhri, Anand Vardhan, Raman Kirpal, and Jayashree Arunachalam are joined by MK Venu, Founding Editor of The Wire, and award-winning investigative journalist and author Josy Joseph. The panel begins with a discussion on the recently signed “historic” India-UK free trade agreement. Venu argues that the BJP's intention behind this FTA is to have a “fresh start” in global trade negotiations: “In the last 11 years of the Modi government, the narrative they built, led by Piyush Goyal, is that all the FTAs signed by the UPA government were bad for India, that they were being used as a conduit for Chinese goods.”The conversation then shifts to Jagdeep Dhankhar's resignation as vice president. Abhinandan asks who will oversee the Rajya Sabha “with the parliament session already happening, and all sorts of noise and protests”.Explaining the legal framework, Anand says, “Article 67 says that till the next vice president is appointed, he will have to continue. But he has made it clear that he will not be attending the House.” Venu draws a pattern of abrupt and unexplained resignations among the Indian political and bureaucratic elite: “There is a striking parallel in the manner in which Dhankhar, CBI chief (former Director) Alok Verma, and (former Election Commissioner) Arun Goel abruptly left. What is it that drives leadership in the Modi-Shah regime? There's intrigue, there's cloak and dagger, there's paranoia. Paranoia accompanied by complete power. It's a paradox.”Commenting on media speculation around Dhankhar's resignation, Anand says, “Journalists and public and social media commentators cannot say the simple thing that ‘we don't know'.” Jayashree adds, “It doesn't matter if there is any value to these theories. What matters is that you have a story, a source, the source has said something outlandish, and that is your headline.”The panel then shifts to the Bombay High Court's recent verdict on the 2006 Mumbai blasts. Raman explains: “It's a 576-page judgement talking about how the police have manufactured evidence in very great detail…This particular judgement has put a huge question mark on this state-specific law MCOCA.”Drawing from his decades of experience reporting on intelligence and security, Josy says: “One of the things that has always struck me was the impunity with which our police and investigative agencies are able to do pure malicious things and get away because there is no prosecution for malpractices.”Josy also sheds light on the complexities of police functioning and the political pressures that often influence investigations. “I think in India today, the most difficult job is not being a journalist or not being an NGO worker. I think the most difficult job is to be an honest government official.”Timecodes00:00:00 – Introductions and announcements00:05:50 – Headlines 00:14:20-FTA Deal between UK & India / VP's resignation00:47:55- MK Venu's recommendations00:54:02 - Bombay Blast acquittal by the HC01:21:30 - Josy's Recommendation01:27:33- Letters01:43:40- RecommendationsCheck out previous Hafta recommendations, references, songs and letters.Produced and recorded by Amit Pandey, Ashish Anand and Anil Kumar. Have you heard about the great recall movement that's happening in Taiwan? What's it all about? Related Links: https://talkingtaiwan.com/the-great-recall-movement-effort-in-taiwan-boots-on-the-ground-ep-316/ 24 lawmakers, or legislators from the Chinese Nationalist Kuomintang KMT party are being put up for a recall vote. I don't think the world has ever seen anything like this happen on a national level in a democracy- 24 lawmakers being recalled from office, and that number is likely to be even higher at the time that this episode gets released. It's truly unprecedented! This recall vote certainly didn't happen overnight. It was through dedicated grassroots efforts, of the everyday people of Taiwan. Questions have been raised as to whether the recall efforts are a partisan politically motivated effort on the part of the Democratic Progressive Party to oust KMT legislators. That's what I wanted to get to the bottom of in this episode as I talked to some of the volunteers who have been boots on the ground in Taiwan's recall effort. As you'll hear in this episode, what's happening in Taiwan is a historic demonstration of the will of the people to exercise their rights in a democracy. The island-wide effort in Taiwan to recall lawmakers has been going on since last year and I sat down to speak to three volunteers Carol, Acho and Eric about how this mass movement has successfully gone through two stages, first signatures from1% of eligible voters in a legislator's district must be collected to initiate a recall. Then in the second stage signatures from 10% of eligible voters in a legislator's district must collect to in order for a recall vote to proceed. The hard part is that the signatures on the 1% and 10% petitions cannot be the same. On July 26 Taiwan's Central Election Commission (CEC) will hold recall votes for now possibly even more than 24 KMT lawmakers. Special thanks to Julien Oeuillet the Founding Editor of IPON (the Indo-Pacific Open News) for his help in making this interview possible. Here's a little preview of what we talked about in this podcast episode: What the recall movement that's happening in Taiwan is about Why and how Acho, Carol and Eric volunteer their time and energy in the effort to recall legislators How the recall efforts are targeting pro-CCP Chinese Nationalist Kuomintang KMT legislators How the recall is necessary so that Taiwan's parliament/legislature can function normally How the first volunteers for the recall met through a LINE group How what happened after the Bluebird Movement protests motivated people to attempt to recall KMT legislators How the Sunflower Movement compares to the recall movement How they vetted volunteers from outside of Taiwan who wanted to help with the recall effort in Taiwan How they dealt with people trying to infiltrate the recall volunteer groups How the recall effort got started with 10 volunteers and has grown to 500 volunteers globally How A-Mei one of the lead recall movement volunteers was targeted by the KMT who accused her and revealed her personal information and identity How the Taiwanese people feel they are at risk of losing their country to pro-CCP KMT legislators How the KMT has smeared and sued recall movement volunteers including Carol How the KMT has broken up recall movement volunteer groups How Carol has put her job on hold to be dedicated to being a leader of her recall movement volunteer group full-time What Carol does as leader of her recall movement group How Acho volunteers for the recall effort by editing and creating videos How Eric volunteers for the recall effort by dealing with the media The types of videos they produce to promote and create awareness of the recall effort How the majority of recall volunteers are women (60% women, 40% men) How over 100 recall volunteers are dedicated full-time to the effort How the women recall volunteers have been confronted by people who don't support the recall The standard for collecting signatures for the recall Why the KMT's efforts to recall DPP have failed due to forgery or signatures of the deceased on their recall petitions How the KMT is trying to paint the picture that the DPP are orchestrating the recall of KMT legislators How the recall effort is a grassroots effort not about conflict between the DPP and KMT political parties How there could be more than 24 KMT legislators put up for a recall vote The demographics of the districts that Carol, Eric and Acho are volunteers in for the recall How Acho and Eric balance volunteering for the recall effort with their day jobs How KMT legislators have not offered any explanation of what was discussed in a closed door meeting in 2024 with Chinese officials How public reaction to volunteers of the recall effort has changed over time How the recall volunteers now need to focus on encouraging the public to vote on July 26 How Carol encouraged creativity and idea of the recall volunteers that she manages How the sentiment of the recall volunteers is that we are all in this together How if eight to 10 KMT legislators are recalled there will be a better balance in the legislative yuan How Carol, Eric and Acho feel they are working selflessly for a common goal and that they are taking care of each other How this experience with the recall effort has helped Acho to see how the people of Taiwan can be so united How Carol has seen many recall volunteers evolving How what is happening in Taiwan is important for Asia and other democracies in the world Related Links: https://talkingtaiwan.com/the-great-recall-movement-effort-in-taiwan-boots-on-the-ground-ep-316/

Abby and Patrick welcome returning guest Hannah Zeavin – scholar, write, editor, co-founder of the Psychosocial Foundation and Founding Editor of Parapraxis magazine – to talk about her brand-new book, Mother Media: Hot and Cool Parenting in the 20th Century. It's an exploration of the complex relationships that have tied together the figure of the mother as an abstraction, the work of mothering as a practical matter, and academic and popular discourses about what mothers should be and how they should go about doing it. What does it mean to think about the mother as a “medium” for containing, nurturing, and shepherding the development of a child, and why do debates about mothering pivot so invariably around questions of media consumption and technological mediation? The conversation spans the history of academic research into parenting from behaviorism to attachment theory; clinical and popular discourses about mothers from Freud to Dr. Spock; the profusion of tools that promise to “help” mothers with their kids; “good-enough” mothering, mother-blaming, and vicious double binds; moral, political, and legal debates about nannies, “helicopter mothers,” incarcerated mothers, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome; and much, much more. As the price of gas and LNG (Liquified Natural Gas) becomes a key factor for the value of the world's energy, we have decided to bring in a top gas expert to explain where the market is and how is it going to evolve.Seb Kennedy is a leading market analyst and Founding Editor of Energy Flux (www.EnergyFlux.news), an independent newsletter that analyses global gas and LNG markets through the lens of Europe's energy transition. We review the numerous phases that the market has faced since the beginning of the decade, COVID, post COVID, Russia-Ukraine. We delve into the incredible expansion of US Exports capacity, with 8 terminals now operational and a forecasted growth of another 50% by the end of the decade. We analyse how the market is inherently volatile, which make long term investment difficult but still inside a band. If the LNG gets too high, then consumers will switch; if it gets too low, then some capacity will be shelved. We focus on Qatar, the world's lowest cost producer, which will continue to grow no matter what. Seb anticipates a surplus in the coming years with massive extra capacities coming on the market from USA and Qatar. But the role of Iran and Russia, which hold the largest reserves, remain a huge uncertainty. Europe's attitude towards LNG is a complex web of contradictions, between decarbonisation, security and affordability of supply, and global geopolitics. In conclusion, a strategic source of energy, but difficult to apprehend.
