"Writing has never felt like a chore to me. It always feels like the space of freedom, and that I'm stealing the time from my job to do something I love." – Tom Lutz In addition to editing the Los Angeles Review of Books, "... a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and disseminating ... engaging writing on every aspect of literature, culture, and the arts," Tom also founded The LARB Radio Hour, The LARB Quarterly Journal, The LARB/USC Publishing Workshop, and LARB Books. His fiction debut is, “A literary thriller that wanders the globe,” novel Born Slippy is described as part "... literary thriller, noir and political satire ... a darkly comic and honest meditation on modern life under global capitalism.” Bestselling novelist James Ellroy said of the book, "Lutz has the seven deadly sins nailed and rethought for our 2020 world. Today we had the privilege of speaking with a true pioneer in the field of neuropsychiatry and brain stimulation— Dr. Harold Sackeim.Dr. Sackeim is perhaps best known for his extensive research on electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), but his contributions span a wide range of topics from treatment-resistant depression to the placebo effect in neurostimulation. As a founding figure in modern ECT research, he has played a central role in shaping both the science and the clinical practice of brain stimulation therapies. In this episode, we explored the history and future of ECT, the controversies surrounding it, and Dr. Sackeim's insights on the direction of neuromodulation. He explains how ECT has long been the most effective treatment for severe, treatment-resistant depression. While once overlooked in favor of medication, we now know that both the placement and intensity of stimulation are key—challenging the old belief that seizures alone drive its effects.

Abby and Patrick welcome returning guest Hannah Zeavin – scholar, write, editor, co-founder of the Psychosocial Foundation and Founding Editor of Parapraxis magazine – to talk about her brand-new book, Mother Media: Hot and Cool Parenting in the 20th Century. It's an exploration of the complex relationships that have tied together the figure of the mother as an abstraction, the work of mothering as a practical matter, and academic and popular discourses about what mothers should be and how they should go about doing it. What does it mean to think about the mother as a “medium” for containing, nurturing, and shepherding the development of a child, and why do debates about mothering pivot so invariably around questions of media consumption and technological mediation? The conversation spans the history of academic research into parenting from behaviorism to attachment theory; clinical and popular discourses about mothers from Freud to Dr. Spock; the profusion of tools that promise to “help” mothers with their kids; “good-enough” mothering, mother-blaming, and vicious double binds; moral, political, and legal debates about nannies, “helicopter mothers,” incarcerated mothers, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome; and much, much more. Read and subscribe to Parapraxis here: https://www.parapraxismagazine.com/Learn more about the Psychosocial Foundation here: https://www.thepsychosocialfoundation.org/Mother Media is available here: https://mitpress.mit.edu/9780262049559/mother-media/An excerpt from Mother Media in the Los Angeles Review of Books: https://lareviewofbooks.org/article/the-heir-conditioner/Zeavin, “Composite Case: The Fate of the Children of Psychoanalysis”: https://www.parapraxismagazine.com/articles/composite-caseZeavin, “Unfree Associations”: https://www.nplusonemag.com/issue-42/essays/unfree-associations/Zeavin, “Parallel Processes”: https://www.nplusonemag.com/issue-49/politics/parallel-processes/A podcast about psychoanalysis, politics, pop culture, and the ways we suffer now. Natural Gas is Worse than Coal - Dr. Robert Howarth

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 13, 2025 48:55 Transcription Available

While the fossil fuel industry continues to promote "natural gas" as a relatively "clean" energy source, Dr. Robert Howarth has argued since since his seminal report in 2011 that methane (which makes up roughly 5% of "natural gas") poses a greater threat to humankind than "dirty" options like coal and oil. This is particularly true of methane produced through hydraulic fracturing ("fracking") Join us for a conversation about what we've now known for more than a decade, and how much more convinced Dr. Howarth is now that we should not be fracking for gas, nor otherwise be using methane as an energy source.Dr. Howarth is the David R. Atkinson Professor of Ecology & Environmental Biology in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Cornell University. He's an Earth systems scientist, ecosystem biologist, and biogeochemist. He has worked extensively on environmental issues related to human-induced changes in the sulfur, nitrogen, phosphorus, and carbon cycles, the impacts of global climate change, the interaction of energy systems and the environment, and implementation of 100% renewable energy policies. He is the Founding Editor of the journal Biogeochemistry.Currently, Howarth serves as one of 22 members of the Climate Action Council, the group charged by law with implementing the aggressive climate goals of New York's Climate Leadership & Community Protection Act of 2019, often referred to as CLCPA. Howarth has published more than 200 research papers, and these have been cited in other peer-reviewed articles more than 70,000 times, making Howarth one of the ten most cited aquatic scientists in the world. In 2011, Time Magazine named Howarth as one of 50 “People Who Matter” for his research on the greenhouse gas footprint of shale gas produced from hydraulic fracturing, better known as “fracking”.Topics Discussed Include:Why methane is such a concern with regard to climate changeWhy methane emissions are greater than predicted by the gas industryWhy Dr. Howarth believes methane is worse for the climate than coalHow some methane leaks are accidental while others are routine, and therefore can't be eliminatedHow OGI thermal cameras are able to see methane and other greenhouse gassesFurther ReadingDr. Howarth maintains a web site featuring many of the works he's published over the years, including the April 2011 paper on methane leaks from gas fracking.Support the showVisit us at climatemoneywatchdog.org!

As the price of gas and LNG (Liquified Natural Gas) becomes a key factor for the value of the world's energy, we have decided to bring in a top gas expert to explain where the market is and how is it going to evolve.Seb Kennedy is a leading market analyst and Founding Editor of Energy Flux (www.EnergyFlux.news), an independent newsletter that analyses global gas and LNG markets through the lens of Europe's energy transition. We review the numerous phases that the market has faced since the beginning of the decade, COVID, post COVID, Russia-Ukraine. We delve into the incredible expansion of US Exports capacity, with 8 terminals now operational and a forecasted growth of another 50% by the end of the decade. We analyse how the market is inherently volatile, which make long term investment difficult but still inside a band. If the LNG gets too high, then consumers will switch; if it gets too low, then some capacity will be shelved.  We focus on Qatar, the world's lowest cost producer, which will continue to grow no matter what. Seb anticipates a surplus in the coming years with massive extra capacities coming on the market from USA and Qatar. But the role of Iran and Russia, which hold the largest reserves, remain a huge uncertainty. Europe's attitude towards LNG is a complex web of contradictions, between decarbonisation, security and affordability of supply, and global geopolitics.  In conclusion, a strategic source of energy, but difficult to apprehend.

You're most likely familiar with Dr. Dan Siegel and his pioneering work to understand the mind and help us live more joyfully. You probably aren't familiar with his childhood story in which his joy and innocence set in motion the death of something he dearly loved. When Dan arrived at the Hoffman Process retreat site and stepped out of his car, he was immediately greeted by one of the rabbits who lives on the over 180 acres there. When he saw this rabbit, an array of feelings and sensations swept through his body. A few days later, as Dan's Process was well underway, a fawn and its mother would open the door wider into the deep work of Dan's Process. The Hoffman Process offers a science-based, courageous week of transformation. It's a week of experiential learning incorporating everything, including the land and everything alive. It opens the door to what Dan calls "the plane of possibility," also referred to as Love by Dan. With one foot in the practical science and the other in the world that opens us to the spiritual aspects of our nature, we step into the possibility and opportunity to heal what has often followed us nearly our entire lives. In this nearly-an-hour conversation, Dan shares his journey of studying the mind and the results and insights of his decades of research and practice with his clients. Drew, our host, and Hoffman teacher Marc Kaplan join in for this amazing conversation. Marc was Dan's teacher at the Process and together they share insights into much of what transpired for Dan. Dan's deeply delightful and joyful qualities thread their way through this conversation. What a gift. Thomas is joined by neuroscientist, education philosopher, and social entrepreneur Dr. Sará King, and clinical professor of psychiatry, co-director of the Mindful Awareness Research Center at UCLA, and Executive Director of the Mindsight Institute Dr. Dan Siegel. They discuss the concept of Intrapersonal Neurobiology - an interdisciplinary approach to understanding how our minds create our experiences, with an emphasis on the benefits of what Dr. Siegel refers to as “self-expanding emotions” - empathy, compassion, gratitude, and awe. They dive deep into the idea of the collective nervous system, how we can learn to experience it, and how that can help us shift from defining the self as a solo entity to understanding humanity as fundamentally interconnected. In doing this, Dr. King and Dr. Siegel posit that we can create a stronger sense of belonging, increase our sustainability, and assist in the evolution of the planet instead of its destruction. ✨ Thomas' Art of Attunement course is 50% off - for a limited time.
