Liz Applegate is a life coach and fellow podcaster, whose show "Midlife Schmidlife" was born when she googled the term "midlife" and what came back was "the wrong side of 40". After talking to Liz, we believe she is on the right side of just about everything. Listen as we discuss the concept of "shoulding", undiagnosed postpartum depression, and whether 50-somethings should exclusively be wearing caftans. Emotions run the gamut as Ellie wants to be Liz's new bestie, and Julia gets extra feisty as she invents "Smelly Pirate Whore Island" and then unpacks the new 2022 North American Menopause Society's position on Hormone Replacement Therapy and whether or not it causes breast cancer. In this podcast episode, I'm speaking to three other podcast hosts about what they've experienced in changing up their shows. I'm super honored to have each of them join me, and I deeply admire them as outstanding podcasters with remarkable shows. I'm speaking to Liz Applegate, Andrea Owen, and Elsie Escobar about what they've experienced in changing up their podcasts. We're covering: Changing up your show with a mini series Liz Applegate of Midlife Schmidlife joins to talk about how she decided to do a mini-series after she'd stepped away from her podcast for about a year. She had played with the ideas of starting a new show, and decided to simplify and do the easiest thing: keep the show name, the intro/outro, the music and the cover art and just add in a new topic that was speaking to her in the moment. The result was that she rekindled her joy of podcasting and has decided to jump back in with her show, with new episodes scheduled to come out in October 2021. Liz Applegate's Podcast, Website, and Community When to consider changing the name of your podcast Andrea Owen is well known for her delightful show, "Your Kick-Ass Life." She loved the name, and also eventually wrote a book with the same title. A few years passed and she felt that she needed a new name: for her show, her business, and for another book that's just come out, too. She decided to change it all over to "Make Some Noise" to reflect the new direction and branding she chose. She loves this new name and is excited about moving forward with it. Andrea Owen's Podcast, Website, and new book (Make Some Noise) Listen to Andrea's discussion on Jump Start Your Joy Should you start a second show? I started podcasting with one show: Jump Start Your Joy. It's been lovely, AND since I started I have also changed my career to being a podcast producer. There were topics that I wanted to cover that did not really fit into the first show. I took a long time considering how I wanted to address my new passion, and decided that it was with a new show. What happens when it's time to end a show? Elsie Escobar of She Podcasts and Libsyn started her podcasting journey with a show about Yoga: Elsie's Yoga Class. Her website and branding was all focused on "Yogeek." After several years, she decided to retire that brand. She has also stopped creating new episodes for her yoga class show - and she talks about what happens when you embrace change. And even though it may be uncomfortable to let go of something you've created for several years, change is inevitable. Read the full episode notes on my site. In this episode, Liz Applegate, our lead coach here at YKAL, joins me for a conversation about shit that matters.  We are talking about aging, perimenopause, and depression. One of the reasons I wanted to have a conversation about these topics was to shine a light on some of the ways they can show up in one’s life, especially in 2020, and the curveball we’ve been thrown this year.  In this episode you’ll hear: Liz shares her history with depression and antidepressants and how she gave herself permission to seek mental health help. (8:30) I share my experience of how a discussion with my therapist about burnout turned into one about high functioning depression. (19:33) Our thoughts and feelings (and struggle) on being middle-aged. (22:08) What we think about navigating perimenopause. (34:25) http://yourkickasslife.com/355

She is a certified Courageous Living Coach and has been called an inner-critic whisperer by many of her clients. One of the reasons I wanted to bring Liz onto the show was to speak on the topic of breaking the good girl rules, which is one of her areas of expertise. She explains that these rules are those in which keep grown women playing small. In this episode, we talk about what it actually means to play small, why we move through life unaware of our tolerations, and how we can work to let our innate gifts shine. We also talk about one of Liz’s deepest passions, creating connections with other women. I am super pumped to bring this episode to you today. I hope you enjoy it! Magnesium is an important mineral that aids in energy production, the immune system, heart health, and more. But are you getting enough of it through diet alone? This mineral is involved in over 700 biochemical reactions, and put simply, we cannot function without it. It's important to note that while many people aren't getting enough magnesium through diet alone, magnesium supplementation is a potential solution to solving an estimated epidemic for the 50-80% of Americans deficient in magnesium. The good news is that the NeoLife Scientific Advisory Board developed Magnesium Complex. NeoLife Magnesium Complex is a naturally-sourced, highly bioavailable formula and is the first of its kind to feature phytonutrient- and magnesium-rich whole food nutrients. It is important to note that today if individuals were asked what nutrients were lacking in the American diet, studies have shown that the top answers would probably be calcium, vitamin D or fiber. Though all nutrients are essential for good health, few are more crucial to focus on than magnesium – because we do not usually get enough in our diets, magnesium is a major mineral essential for over 700 biochemical reactions, and our cells cannot function without it. Interestingly enough, cells need magnesium to produce ATP, which provides the body with energy. So without magnesium, cells would not have the power to function. With all the important benefits that magnesium brings to the table, it is quite alarming that an estimated 50-80% of Americans have low magnesium. The good news is that magnesium supplementation can play a key role in filling magnesium intake gaps. Join us as Scientific Advisory Board Member, Dr. Liz Applegate talks about NeoLife's newest product Magnesium Complex. For years, we have seen research clearly illustrate the beneficial effect of nutrition on athletic performance. Studies have shown that proper nutrition is critical not only to your athletic success, but also and more importantly to your growth, development and overall health. We have learned that inadequate nutrient intake deprives your body of the energy needed to perform an event, the carbohydrates necessary for glycogen replacement, the protein needed for tissue building and repair, and the micronutrients necessary for normal metabolism and maintenance of body homeostasis. As an individual and even more so as an athlete, your body needs proper fuel, hydration, and rest to optimize sports performance. If you ignore maintaining these, you can hurt yourself and your sport in the long run. In addition, our diet can greatly impact how effective we are in our daily lives. Liz Applegate, Paula Jenkins and Julie Houghton have a continued conversation around confidence. As life coaches, they've noticed that in their own lives and in working with clients, a lack self-confidence is something that constantly comes up during times of transition. Confidence just seems to be the bottom layer of so many places where we can get stuck. What’s also special about this episode is it’s actually part 2 of a conversation that we started yesterday over on the Jumpstart Your Joy podcast with Paula, on episode 132. So if you haven't done so already, be sure to check out that episode. In this episode they discuss: How confidence can be a sign post into what is import to us. Tuning into where our lack of confidence shows up can actually be the start of regaining your confidence. How the “shoulds” and good girl rules can affect our confidence at work and in our lives. How gender roles can play a role in how we show up. How we can begin to pay attention to how our body responds to confidence plus ways we can use our bodies to maybe shift the lack of confidence we are feeling. Ep132: A Mastermind Shares Proven Ways to Feel More Confident in Your Work and Life

Jump Start Your Joy

A recent hot topic with my mastermind has been that of confidence. About two months ago, we did a webinar for the first time on it, and found that it was such a deep and wide topic. This episode is a two-part one … today you’ll get to hear part one on my show and on Wednesday, part two is airing on Liz Applegate’s show, Midlife Schmidlife. There are a couple of things I know to be true about confidence: nearly everyone, at some point, struggles with feeling self-confident. While it’s not unusual for other people to look and act extremely confident, the thing I’ve found (especially in talking to so many guests for the podcast) is that at some point or another, everyone doubts themselves. And I want that to sink in for you. Even published authors, even rock stars, even the front man of a band, or the voice of a super villain – every single one of them has shared with me that they don’t always trust in themselves, and, they feel like other people likely have it more together than they do. The other thing that’s tricky, and interesting, about confidence is that it’s an emotion you only feel after doing the thing that scares you. This is also universally true – even with outwardly confident people – that you’re going to run into things (often those things that are most important to you), that scare you. And, doing whatever it is for the first time? You won’t feel so confident about it. The tricky thing? The confidence comes AFTER you do the thing that is scary. It’s a bit of a leap of faith, and that’s what makes it so tricky, so scary, and why so many people stop in their tracks before even trying to do the thing that they are scared of. There’s another way of thinking of this – it’s not so much that you don’t have confidence in yourself, it’s that you’re feeling fear and that’s uncomfortable. In this week’s episode, Liz Applegate, Julie Houghton and I are tackling the questions of confidence. I hope you’ll join in. In this episode we talk about: How confidence shows up for us in our lives and work What it means to reconnect and claim your voice when you’re not feeling confident How being kind with yourself about your human experience of feeling afraid is a key component to working through your fears That everyone experiences not feeling confident The myth of comfort and safety vs discomfort How people pleasing, boundaries, and being afraid to speak up play into confidence Learning to communicate more effectively to feel more confident Identifying what is in your control, and how that builds confidence Resources Sign up for our Workshop on April 20th Listen to Part Two on Wednesday on Midlife Schmidlife Liz Applegate’s Website and Podcast Julie Houghton’s Website Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life (book on Amazon)

Jo Casey is a certified coach, speaker, trainer and podcaster.  In addition to being British, slightly nerdy and allergic to the marketing bullsh*t in the personal development industry, she’s certain that succeeding as female entrepreneurs means violating every single message that’s been poured into us about what it means to be a ‘good’ woman (Don’t take up space….be compliant….defer to others....don’t be pushy/bossy/too confident etc.etc.) You can find Jo over at https://www.jocasey.com/ Meaningful Biz Academy can be found here https://meaningfulbizacademy.com/ And be sure to subscribe to the Meaning Business Podcast at https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-meaningful-business-podcast-with-jo-casey/id778357407?mt=2

In this episode we sit down with Dr. Liz Applegate, a nationally-renowned expert on all things related to nutrition. She speaks about her teaching career and a current program that strengthens people’s sharp-mindedness, among other exciting projects she’s working on. One thing we know all too well in navigating our lives with disability is to treasure what we can do for ourselves. Maybe it has to do with the American ideal, maybe it has to do with remaining as active as we can, but it’s probably just because we are both hard-headed - independence is something we strive for. Since the rare disorder we both have is slowly taking away more and more of our independence, we love learning about things we can do for ourselves. In the world of disability, we are constantly reminded of things we can’t do; so it’s really rejuvenating and especially interesting to us when we learn more about the things we are able to independently, especially when those things can have a big impact on our day-to-day health.   Doctor Liz explains that a specialized diet and nutrition has health benefits for everyone - especially for those with rare disorders.   “Nutrition plays a very important role, especially for people with [rare] conditions… This is important for people to be motivated. [This is] something they can control.”   Eating healthier is a step that those of us championing our own independence can definitely look into!!! And the consequences of eating healthier is a way we can all feel a little better!   And Kyle asks Dr. Liz if it’s a good idea to put butter in his smoothie, as he was fond of doing recently.   Her response?   “...Wow.”   Thanks to Dr. Applegate for joining us and talking to us a little about the importance of good nutrition. It’s a good reminder that in the world of disability, it’s important for us to look past the things we aren’t able to do and focus on the things we can do. One thing we can do is to pay more attention to the things we eat and strive for a healthier diet. That won’t always be easy, but it all starts with choice.   Links: Dr. A's Bio: http://nutrition.ucdavis.edu/people/faculty/applegate_liz.html UCD Sports Nutrition Twitter: https://twitter.com/fuelingaggies UCD Sports Nutrition Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/fuelingaggies/ UCD Sports Nutrition YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCnCcHAlJh8oaYyEWWNCH8fQ Team Davis Website: http://team-davis.org/
