In this conversation, Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse and Dr. Deborah Savage discuss the Catholic Church's teachings on contraception, the importance of lived experience in understanding these teachings, and the challenges posed by the sexual revolution. They explore the philosophical foundations laid by John Paul II, the distinction between human acts and impulses, and the implications for sexual morality and human dignity.   Dr. Deborah Savage joined the Theology faculty during the 2021-22 academic year, having taught both philosophy and theology at the St. Paul Seminary School of Divinity at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota for the previous thirteen years. She received her doctorate in Religious Studies from Marquette University in 2005; her degree is in both theology and philosophy. Dr. Savage is the co-founder and acting director of the Siena Symposium for Women, Family, and Culture, an interdisciplinary think tank, organized to respond to John Paul II's call for a new and explicitly Christian feminism.   Her writing has appeared in several publications, Nova et Vertera, Logos: A Journal of Catholic Thought and Culture, First Things, The Humanum Review, Catholic World Report, and Public Discourse. Some recent publications include “Redeeming Woman: A Catholic Response to the Second Sex Issue,” published in the journal Religions and “The Therapeutic and Pastoral Implications of Pope St. John Paul II's Account of the Person,” published in The Journal of Christian Bioethics. The most recent iteration of her theory of Man and Woman is a chapter in a volume entitled The Complementarity of Men and Women, edited by Dr. Paul Vitz and published by CUA Press (May 2021). She is currently at work on a book entitled “Woman and Man” for formal consideration by Catholic University of America Press.   Dr. Savage is a member of the Academy of Catholic Theology and the American Catholic Philosophical Association. She served for several years as a member of the Board of Trustees at Franciscan University, resigning in 2021. She moved to Steubenville along with her husband of 32 years, Andrew Percic, and their daughter, Madeline.   Lived Experience and the Search for Truth: Revisiting Catholic Sexual Morality Buy it here: https://www.amazon.com/Lived-Experience-Search-Truth-Revisiting/dp/B0DG2PVQ6K/ref=sr_1_1   A World Without Fathers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjNiVYfDdSU   Male and Female He Created Them: Complementarity as Mission: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJBgR6krKaY https://drdeborahsavage.com/   Is There A War On Men? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWz4iLHFwKE     Other videos of Dr. Savage: https://drdeborahsavage.com/videos/   Catholic Women's Forum Interview with Dr. Savage: https://catholicwomensforum.org/staff/woman-know-deborah-savage/   Active Projects: https://drdeborahsavage.com/active-projects/   Publications: https://drdeborahsavage.com/publications/   Department of Theology of Fransiscan University at Steubenville: https://spt.franciscan.edu/faculty/savage-dr-deborah/

Lent can be a time to welcome new traditions into our lives, especially ones that are rooted in prayer. This Holy Week, we invite you to reflect on the life of Christ in a unique way: through a series of radio plays first produced by the BBC in the early 1940s focused on bringing the Gospels to life. Joining us today is Kathryn Wehr, managing editor of Logos: A Journal of Catholic Thought and Culture, published by St. Thomas's Center for Catholic Studies. Kathryn has edited a new edition of “The Man Born King,” which shows the humanity and divinity of Christ.

We discuss how this works in ordinary life, its philosophical importance, and the life of faith. Gage then explains how he things different kinds of arguments and evidence relate to belief and faith.

How can the study of history, understood as a branch of liberal learning, become a liberating education? Prof. Francesca Guerri offers an initial answer by giving us an account of her own intellectual and spiritual pilgrimage and the role of the study of history in that pilgrimage. Then, opening the discussion to more universal connections, Dr. Guerri takes up the themes of friendship, the nature of the human person, and the role that community and companionship play in teaching and the intellectual life of the university. She also considers how history relates to the sister disciplines of liberal learning and how historical study can be a point of entry for students into a larger vision of reality that is coherent, intelligent, and ultimately teleological. History, approached as a discipline within the Catholic intellectual tradition offers meaning and vision that can liberate us and for which we are ultimately responsible as caretakers. The newly canonized John Henry Newman is fascinating in many respects. One such feature of the interest he garners is his being Newman the Catholic convert. He was raised in an Anglican home, eventually becoming a well-known and highly influential clergyman in the Church of England. Yet, at the height of his influence and public notoriety, Newman came into communion with the Church of Rome, becoming a Catholic. He would in time be ordained a priest, bring the Oratorian religious community to English shores, and eventually be named a cardinal by Pope Leo XIII.So it is that one might wonder how Newman viewed other, non-Catholic Christians after his conversion. Given his keenness and subtlety of intellect and personality, Newman would refuse to turn his eye from the serious disagreements and differences between various branches and sects of Christians. He would at the same time also recognize and extol the good being done by other Christians, along with the sincerity and fervor of their faith.Giving us an idea of Newman's ideas and attitudes regarding other Christians--along with much more aside--is David Deavel, Ph.D., editor of the fantastic Logos: A Journal of Catholic Thought and Culture, and Visiting Assistant Professor of Catholic Studies at the University of St. Thomas, Minnesota.  Dr. David Deavel, Ph.D. University of St. ThomasDr. David Deavel on Academia.eduLogos: A Journal of Catholic Thought and Culture"Allies in a Time of Trouble: Newman on Other Christians" a talk by David Deavel at Anselm HouseSupport the show (http://patreon.com/curiouscatholicpodcast)

“The great miracle of the last century is that, for most of the world, developing market economies have allowed them to actually enter that “circle of exchange” [as St. John Paul II said] and so we have at this point in history...the smallest percentage of people in the world living in dire poverty. That to me is a much more important question than if somebody else has more stuff than I do,” said David Deavel, Ph.D., an assistant professor of Catholic Studies at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn., and the editor of Logos: A Journal of Catholic Thought and Culture.  This is Part 2 of a two-part podcast. “In almost every socialist system, you're going to end up with one group of people who are in the government, who are running things on behalf of the people...and they're going to end up having the power and the money for themselves,” said David Deavel, Ph.D., an assistant professor of Catholic Studies at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn., and the editor of Logos: A Journal of Catholic Thought and Culture. Young people attracted to socialism “may think of it simply as part of that welfare state ideal and they've been taught, 'Everything works better in Sweden' or something like that,” said Deavel. “And what they don't understand is that those Nordic countries actually did have fairly socialist arrangements in the 1970s. But what they led to was absolute stagnation. So many of them had to open up their economies in order to keep up their large welfare state.” The “Catholic social tradition has largely been open to market economies within a strong juridical framework and with the caveat that, look they can go bad if the culture around them goes bad. Why is that? John Paul II said in Centesimus Annas — his 1991 encyclical — that one of the things that's needed for poor people is that they can enter into the circle of exchange." Deavel continued, "And when you enter into that circle of exchange, profit's going to be a part of that. But in order to succeed in it, you have to be meeting people's needs, both your consumers, as well as the people who are investing, and working for you, as well. And when you have that balance, I think people are not as attracted to these sort of wild-eyed socialist ideals, when they see that no, this can actually work. But the trick is, of course, having a good legal and political framework, as well as — most importantly — having a culture in which the right things are valued..."
