Mark Sutherland discusses the historical context and ongoing relevance of eugenics and population control, as explored in his book "Exterminating Poverty". Sutherland details his grandfather, Dr. Halliday Sutherland's, true motivations for opposing "Britain's Margaret Sanger" Marie Stopes, arguing that it was not due to his Catholicism but his stand against Stopes' eugenics and Neo-Malthusianism. The conversation also explores how eugenics has been rebranded and persists today. Some recent publications include “Redeeming Woman: A Catholic Response to the Second Sex Issue,” published in the journal Religions and “The Therapeutic and Pastoral Implications of Pope St. John Paul II's Account of the Person,” published in The Journal of Christian Bioethics. "Communism is not just a false gospel, it is, in a very real sense, the anti-gospel."In this conversation, Will Wright interviews Stephen Mosher, author of the book 'The Devil in Communist China from Mao down to Xi.' Mosher discusses his experiences in China, including witnessing forced abortions under the one-child policy, and his journey from being a pro-choice atheist to a practicing Roman Catholic and pro-life advocate. He highlights the dangers of the Chinese Communist Party and its establishment of a high-tech digital dictatorship, where the government monitors and controls every aspect of people's lives. Mosher also criticizes the Vatican's attempts to make agreements with the Chinese government and emphasizes the need for the United States to recognize the threat posed by China and take a strong stance against the Chinese Communist Party.Buy the book The Devil and Communist China: From Mao Down to Xi by Steven Mosher from TAN Books HERE.Takeaways* The Chinese Communist Party has established a high-tech digital dictatorship, where the government monitors and controls every aspect of people's lives.* The Vatican's attempts to make agreements with the Chinese government have been misguided, as the Chinese Communist Party uses these agreements to infiltrate and control the Catholic Church in China.* The United States needs to recognize the threat posed by China and take a strong stance against the Chinese Communist Party.* China's population is aging and its economic prospects are grim due to the one-child policy and the expropriation of wealth by the Communist Party.* The Chinese Communist Party is funding the Green Movement and using it to weaken the United States and other countries.Steven W. “Cultivating this disposition of being able to enter into silence and to sit with the Lord can be absolutely central for growing in the spiritual life,” said R. Jared Staudt, Ph.D. “It's necessary to be very deliberate, to put up a fence...I want to really have peace of mind, I want to have peace of soul. I want my family to have peace in the home. So, we are going to foster that and protect it and guard it from these outside influences. So, that's the phone and any other devices...[to say] we're going to have a time when all these devices are turned off. And, as a family, we're going to foster silence. Not just me, individually, but I'm going to help my kids to develop this. We're going to get it out of the bedroom so my wife and I can actually see each other, talk to each other, grow in our relationship. Because there's a lot of couples — you see these stereotypical images, but it's true — of a couple sitting next to each other and they're both just on their devices.” See Staudt's article, "Learn to do nothing" at the Denver Catholic, which also appeared as “Learning to do nothing: the art of sacred silence” in The Catholic World Report. Staudt is director of content for Exodus 90 and an author, most recently of “How the Eucharist Can Save Civilization" (TAN Books). Learn more at his website, Building Catholic Culture.

Was the Catholic Church slow to condemn racism? Can Catholic teaching be used to justify slavery? How should Catholics engage with Critical Race Theory, in its popular or academic forms? In this episode, philosopher Edward Feser discusses these and other questions with Catholic World Report editor Carl E. Olson. Feser is the author of the new book “All One in Christ: A Catholic Critique of Racism and Critical Race Theory,” in which he examines what the Church has said and done historically on issues of race, and takes a close look at the origins—and recent bestselling popularizations—of Critical Race Theory. Feser and Olson talk about the genesis of the book, common misconceptions about the Catholic Church and race, the inherent limitations of CRT, and more. When Fr. Paul Mankowski, SJ died in September 2020, friends, colleagues, and long-time readers mourned the loss of the biting wit and keen insight that characterized his writing, much of which was published under the pseudonym “Diogenes.” In this episode, two men who knew and admired Fr. Mankowski—his fellow Jesuit, Fr. Joseph Fessio, and his editor at Catholic World Report and later Catholic World News, Philip F. Lawler—remember their friend, whose writing spanned decades and covered Church news, art and culture, politics, and more. A sampling of Fr. Mankowski's writings, most of which he published as Diogenes, has been collected in the new book, “Diogenes Unveiled: A Paul Mankowski Collection,” edited by Lawler and available at Ignatius.com: http://bit.ly/3X6UuNR You can read more essays by Mankowski in the book “Jesuit at Large,” edited by George Weigel: https://ignatius.com/jesuit-at-large-jlerp/ You can find Philip F. Steven Mosher explains how China invented totalitarianism through the ancient school of thought known as Legalism which argues that all power ought to be concentrated in the hands of the state. After the Warring States period China was consolidated into the state of Qin (China) which sought to control important elements of the economy, form propaganda teams to control the thoughts of the people (brainwashing), and create concentration camps. China has been run in totalitarian fashion ever since. Chinese communism is just another version of ancient bureaucratic totalitarianism. Confucianism covered the iron scaffolding of totalitarianism. He doesn't consider Russia to be a threat, rather part of the West, though the West is pushing it into the arms of Beijing which can create a Eurasian superpower. His upcoming book (Politically Incorrect Guide to Pandemics) deals with his thoughts on how he thinks the coronavirus is a Chinese gain-of-function bioweapon. He believes China is perfecting a social credit system and that the pandemic was used to get us to accept such a system. He sees the CCP's lockdowns as an expression of a larger drive for total control and discusses the Taiwan situation. *Support Geopolitics & Empire: Donate https://geopoliticsandempire.com/dona... Today we look at the somehow-legal world of healthcare sharing ministries, a form of health coverage where like-minded religious folks share health care costs. After a series of lawsuits and scandals, these companies are in the news again recently. We'll look at what HCSMs are, how they have flourished as insurance costs rise, and the potential risks they pose to the unsuspecting consumer. Then we'll turn the page to talk about how communities of faith are playing a key role in winning a just and equitable healthcare system. Our guest today is the Reverend Jim Rigby. Rev. Rigby has been the pastor at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Austin Texas for over 25 years. He has a love of world religions and a passion for social justice. Healthcare justice has been a part of his ministry because he believes that healthcare is the most basic right to life, along with a living wage and decent housing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GeRIN9nF-to Show Notes What are Health Care Sharing Ministries? Ben explains that healthcare sharing ministries (HCSMs) are a form of health coverage in which members, who share religious beliefs, make monthly payments to cover the healthcare costs of other members. BUT they are not insurance. Insurance is supposed to cover most of your healthcare services, with cost-sharing by the patient. HCSM are much cheaper than insurance, which is why they're so alluring. But they cover much less, and only pay for a fixed amount of a service, regardless of the total cost. HCSMs, unlike insurance companies, don't take on any risk. The ministries are typically Christian. Members generally must declare their religious faith and promise not to smoke, drink alcohol excessively, or engage in extramarital sexual activity. Generally, they also do not cover abortion, mental health services, or birth control. Unlike insurance, HCSMs can deny coverage for people with pre-existing conditions. The ACA used to fine people for not having insurnace, but HCSMs were exempted from that fine even though they do not meet the federal definition of insurance. (That fine was eliminated under the Trump administration, and the Biden administration hasn't reinstated it.) HCSMs have been around since the 80s, but grew in popularity during the 90s and again after the passage of Obamacare – basically whenever we see concerted efforts to make the government responsible for more healthcare costs. “About 1.5 million Americans are members of these kinds of ministries, according to the Alliance of Health Care Sharing. Some $2 billion in medical expenses were shared through this type of ministry in 2020. There are over 100 health sharing organizations certified by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for meeting the federal law's definition of a health sharing ministry.” – Reported in Catholic World Report in May 2022. Unregulated HCSMs leave people behind and contradict the religious values they claim to be based on Health insurance companies aren't well-regulated in the United States, but they still have to operate under some basic regulations. Gillian explains that there are virtually no regulations on HCSMs. As a result their practices can be exploitative. Thirty states actually have “safe harbor” rules that exempt HCSMs from the restrictions on insurance companies. In “safe harbor” states, as long as members receive a written disclaimer from the HCSM...
Christopher Bell, president and executive director of Good Counsel Homes, is “on the frontline of the pro-life movement,” as The Catholic World Report wrote in a 2021 profile. Chris and TSSM co-host Bill Schmitt have been friends since their college years, when they were both studying journalism. Co-host Paul Giesting joined the two native Long Islanders for a discussion of Catholic values in the abortion debate shortly after the leak of a draft US Supreme Court decision which pointed toward a Court decision overruling Roe v Wade. In 1985, Bell co-founded Good Counsel with Father Benedict Groeschel, who was a much-loved voice in Catholic spirituality and media and a member of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal. Good Counsel operates four homes to provide basic necessities and steps toward a stable future for moms and their babies, unborn and recently born, in New York and New Jersey. The homes are a pro-life alternative available at no cost to mothers who choose to give birth rather than abort their babies. The trajectory of politics and policies in New York and New Jersey has been strongly pro-abortion. The differences in approaches among all the states are being highlighted more than ever in the context of the Supreme Court's pending decision in Dobbs v Jackson Women's Health Organization.

AMDG. We've talked before about the distinction between learning theology as a school subject and learning to be a faithful Catholic in our current world. We explore this concept in greater nuance on today's episode as Chrissy Almanzar and Nicholas Senz discuss Kolbe's new world religions course, which surveys religions from Hinduism to Shintoism to the Abrahamic faiths and more. Chrissy and Nick discuss finding elements of truth in these world religions and how that connects to the fullness of truth contained in the Catholic faith. They also explain how engaging other ideas leads to a more nuanced discussion of our own faith, why fear of studying other religions is misplaced, and the way commonalities across religions point in a certain direction while leveling the playing field. Three Church documents to be used in the World Religions course which parents might find helpful as a preview: Ad gentes - on the mission activity of the Church Nostra aetate - declaration on the relation of the Church to non-Christian religions Unitatis redintegratio - decree on ecumenism If you've already enrolled for next year and would like to add the course to your schedule, use this course change form.
