Read Online“Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the Flesh of the Son of Man and drink his Blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my Flesh and drinks my Blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my Flesh is true food, and my Blood is true drink.” John 6:53–55Human reason and free will are the most precious natural gifts God gave us. They are what separate us from every other animal. Human reason enables us to think critically, understand concepts, and arrive at conclusions. Central to our human reason is our free will, which enables us to act upon the conclusions we reach or to reject them, choosing instead to follow our disordered appetites and misguided desires. Though human reason was wounded by Original Sin, it was not completely destroyed. We must diligently strive to act rationally and in accord with our common sense, adhering to the natural law that God has written on our souls. However, even though a rational approach to natural law will bring us a long way toward right living, it is not sufficient to lead us into the deeper truths of eternal salvation, promised to us in Jesus' discourse on the Bread of Life, on which we have been reflecting.By natural reason alone, the Eucharist makes no sense. How could that which appears to be a piece of bread be the “Flesh of the Son of Man” and a cup that appears to be wine be His Blood? Yet when we incorporate divine revelation into our reasoning, the Eucharist as the Flesh and Blood of Jesus, the Son of God, makes perfect sense: “...my Flesh is true food, and my Blood is true drink.” The Eucharist makes sense, but only when we listen with faith to the revelation Jesus gave to us. Today's Gospel provides the clearest teaching we have ever received on this Precious Gift.Today's Gospel begins by relating that “The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, ‘How can this man give us his Flesh to eat?'” (John 6:52). They were quarreling because they were not opening their human reason to the light of Jesus' revealed truth. In this exchange, the Eternal and Incarnate Son of God was speaking a divine truth to them. Jesus spoke clearly and plainly, but their minds remained closed. They heard His words, but they closed themselves off to the Father's Voice, which testified on Jesus' behalf that all He said was true. It seems that some who listened began to understand and believe, prompting the quarrel among them. When you read our Lord's words, what do you hear? Do you hear the Father's Voice in the depths of your conscience, confirming the truthfulness of what you read? Do you hear the Living Word of God echoing within your mind and soul? Do you allow that Word to inform your human reason so that you can conclude that the Eucharist is real, that it is the Flesh and Blood of the Son of God, offered to you so that you can share in eternal life? No amount of human study or intelligence alone will ever convince us of divine truths. God alone can convince us, but only if we listen to His Voice.Truths of faith, such as our belief in the Eucharist, must be more certain than any other natural truth we believe. No rational person would deny the reality of the physical world we see with our eyes or touch with our hands. The noises we hear, the food we taste, and the aroma we smell are all judged as real because we believe what our five senses perceive. When our consciences perceive divine truths, those truths are more certain than all sensory knowledge. Why? Because God is the one directly communicating to us. Reflect today on Jesus' crystal-clear teaching on the Eucharist. We must hear and understand what He said. Our faith in the Eucharist must become certain. Allow the Father's Voice to resonate within your mind so that you are more certain that the Eucharist is the Flesh and Blood of the Son of God than anything else you believe. Strengthen your faith, knowing that His Flesh and Blood bring you to eternal life. My Eucharistic Lord, I believe that You gave Your life for the salvation of all and that the gift of eternal salvation is given to us through the Sacraments. I believe that the Eucharist is Your Flesh and Blood, Your Divine Essence. Please strengthen my faith so that I am more open to the abundant grace You wish to bestow through this Precious Gift. Jesus, I trust in You.  Image: The Feeding the Multitude by S. G. Rudl.Source: Free RSS feed from catholic-daily-reflections.com — Copyright © 2026 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. Today on Ascend: The Great Books Podcast, Deacon Harrison Garlick and Dr. Donald Prudlo explore the intricate relationship between Plato and St. Thomas Aquinas, examining how Aquinas's thought is influenced by Platonic philosophy while also being rooted in Aristotle. We are reading the PURGATORIO for Lent!Check out our LIBRARY OF GUIDES TO THE GREAT BOOKS.See Dr. Prudlo's books on St. Thomas, administration, and more! They discuss the nuances of Aquinas' understanding of universals, the nature of evil, and the significance of the body in Christian anthropology, highlighting the complexities of Aquinas's intellectual context and the historical development of these philosophical ideas. They discuss how Aquinas synthesized various philosophical traditions, particularly in his understanding of existence and essence, the role of beauty, and the moral implications of his metaphysics. The dialogue also touches on the early church's reception (or rejection) of Aristotle, the influence of Islamic philosophy, and the evolution of Aquinas' thought throughout his life. Ultimately, the conversation highlights the richness of Aquinas' philosophy and its relevance to contemporary discussions on faith and reason.Chapters00:00 Introduction to the Great Books Podcast03:11 Experiencing the Papal Conclave06:34 Plato and Aquinas: A Complex Relationship12:43 Aquinas' Intellectual Evolution17:02 The Importance of Reading the Great Books24:25 Platonic Thought in Aquinas' Philosophy34:48 The Quest for Certitude in Philosophy37:20 Realism and the Nature of Universals40:56 Mind-Body Dualism and the Significance of the Body47:36 The Reception of Aristotle in Early Christianity54:09 The Distinction Between Essence and Existence01:04:53 The Role of Beauty in Aquinas' Philosophy01:06:38 Exploring Beauty in Philosophy01:11:23 The Role of Beauty in St. Thomas Aquinas01:13:44 The Ladder of Love and Its Implications01:19:18 Essence and Existence in Thomistic Thought01:21:41 The Hierarchy of Being and Divine Wisdom01:25:22 The Evolution of Aquinas' Thought01:27:35 Understanding Aquinas Through His Influences01:30:17 Final Thoughts on Faith and ReasonTakeawaysAquinas is often mischaracterized as purely Aristotelian. The relationship between Plato and Aristotle is more complex (and harmonious) than often portrayed.Aquinas' thought is enriched by both Platonic and Aristotelian influences.Evil is understood as a privation of the good in Aquinas's philosophy.Aquinas' understanding of universals differs from both Plato and Aristotle. The concept of exitus and reditus is a key Neoplatonic idea in Aquinas. The mind-body dualism presents challenges for Christian thought.Aquinas retained Platonic emphasis on the...

This lecture discusses the 19th-20th century philosopher and psychologist, William James, and focuses on his essay, "The Will To Believe". Specifically it discusses the relationship between certitude or certainty and truth. James distinguishes two different orientations towards these, which he calls empiricism and absolutism. Absolutism holds that we can attain some absolute certainty, and that we can know with certainty that we know the truth. Empiricism about philosophy notes that there is no criterion for truth about which there has been a consensus. The Life, Faith, and Brilliance of Blaise Pascal

On August 19, 1662, French philosopher, mathematician, and apologist Blaise Pascal died at just 39 years old. Pascal, despite his shortened life, is renowned for pioneering work in geometry, physics, and probability theory. His most powerful legacy, however, involves the ways he engaged with life's biggest questions.   Pascal's intellect garnered attention at an early age. At 16, he produced an essay on the geometry of cones so impressive that René Descartes initially refused to believe it could possibly be attributed to a “sixteen-year-old child.” Later, Pascal advanced the study of vacuums in the face of a prevailing (and misplaced) belief that nature is completely filled with matter, and thus “abhors a vacuum.”   In 1654, his work on probability took a new turn when he was sent a brainteaser by a friend. Applying mathematics to the problem, Pascal laid out rows of numbers in a triangle formation, a formation that now bears his name. As author John F. Ross described,   Here was the very idea of probability: establishing the numerical odds of a future event with mathematical precision. Remarkably, no one else had cracked the puzzle of probability before, although the Greeks and Romans had come close.  In 1646, Blaise Pascal encountered the kindness of two Jansenist Christians caring for his injured father. Their love in action earned Pascal's admiration. Then, on the evening of November 23, 1654, Pascal experienced God's presence in a new and personal way, which he described on a scrap of parchment that he sewed into his jacket and carried with him for the rest of his life:   FIRE—God of Abraham, God of Isaac, God of Jacob, not of the philosophers and scholars. Certitude, certitude. Heartfelt joy, peace. God of Jesus Christ. My God and thy God. Thy God shall be my God.   In his writing, Pascal's notions of probability met his faith in God. A compilation of his collected manuscripts was published after his death in a volume entitled, Pensées, or “Thoughts.” Best known is his famous “wager” that, facing uncertainty and in a game with such high stakes, it makes far more sense for fallen human beings to believe in God's existence than doubt it. “If you gain,” he wrote, “you gain all; if you lose, you lose nothing. Wager, then, without hesitation that He is.”  Pascal also offered among the keenest diagnoses of humanity:   The human being is only a reed, the most feeble in nature; but this is a thinking reed. It isn't necessary for the entire universe to arm itself in order to crush him; a whiff of vapor, a taste of water, suffices to kill him. But when the universe crushes him, the human being becomes still more noble than that which kills him, because he knows that he is dying, and the advantage that the universe has over him. The universe, it does not have a clue.  Or, even better:   What a Chimera is man! What a novelty, a monster, a chaos, a contradiction, a prodigy! Judge of all things, an imbecile worm; depository of truth, and sewer of error and doubt; the glory and refuse of the universe.  He also described our moral conditions as human beings,  “[W]e hate truth and those who tell it [to] us, and … we like them to be deceived in our favour” (Pensées 100).  Apart from God, Pascal observed, people distract themselves from the reality of death. But the diversions run out, and then mankind   feels his nothingness, his forlornness, his insufficiency, his dependence, his weakness, his emptiness. There will immediately arise from the depth of his heart weariness, gloom, sadness, fretfulness, vexation, despair. (Pensées 131)  “Between us and heaven or hell there is only life, which is the frailest thing in the world” (Pensées 213 ).  With a poetic nod to his work on vacuums, Pascal concluded:  What is it then that this desire and this inability proclaim to us, but that there was once in man a true happiness of which there now remain to him only the mark and empty trace …? But these are all inadequate, because the infinite abyss can only be filled by an infinite and immutable object, that is to say, only by God Himself.   A generation later, as waves of the Enlightenment swept over Europe, the continent's most prominent thinkers could not escape Pascal's brilliance. According to philosopher Dr. Patrick Riley,  Holbach, as late as the 1770s, still found it necessary to quarrel with the author of the Pensées, Condorcet, when editing Pascal's works, renewed the old debate; Voltaire throughout his life, and even in his last year, launched sally after sally at the writer who frightened him every time he—a hypochondriac—felt ill.   On the human condition in particular, the French Revolution would prove Pascal right and Voltaire wrong. Divorced from God and instead committed to the worship of “pure reason,” France devolved into a violent, anarchic wasteland.  Even today, Blaise Pascal's intellect, passion, and eloquence have lost none of their fire, dedicated as they were to the God who claimed his total devotion. As he wrote on the parchment sewn into his jacket,   Jesus Christ. I have fallen away: I have fled from Him, denied Him, crucified him. May I not fall away forever. We keep hold of him only by the ways taught in the Gospel. Renunciation, total and sweet. Total submission to Jesus Christ and to my director. Eternally in joy for a day's exercise on earth. I will not forget Thy word. Amen.  This Breakpoint was co-authored by Kasey Leander.
