Lady Macbeth is best known to us as Shakespeare's scheming, sleepwalking villain. But, as with most of his so-called history plays, Shakespeare's version of the Macbeths is largely fictional.  Dr. Eleanor Janega talks to the best-selling crime writer - and Gone Medieval fan - Val McDermid who has dragged the truth about the real Queen Macbeth out of the shadows to reveal a woman caught up in the patriarchal prejudices and vicious political intrigues of her time.  Gone Medieval is presented by Dr. Eleanor Janega. The political and natural world is broken and the Macbeths seize this opportunity to rise through the ranks and control their destiny. But their ambitions unravel into a living nightmare in a world where boundaries are paper thin – between the natural and supernatural, love and hate, joy and despair. Take a listen to hear us discuss why Macbeth feels different from other tragedies, the way staging decisions can impact the meaning of this play, and how much of this story is inspired by the real King James I's fears and paranoias. We also touch on what we actually admire about the Macbeths' marriage and just how much Game of Thrones owes to the Scottish Play. Borrowed from Macbeth, Steve takes the line "Something wicked this way comes," as the title for his message, emphasizing the ease with which Macbeth was deceived by the wicked witches, not simply because of them, but because of some unredeemed ambition for the throne that lived inside of him, and was provoked by the witches. This would ultimately lead Macbeth to doing the unimaginable and killing the King in order that the witches prophecy could unfold. Steve takes this scene from Macbeth and shows how this same demonic and deceitful influence which preyed on the unredeemed parts of Macbeths heart, is preying on those in politics, culture, and the Church today. As Paul expressed to Timothy, "Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of demons" (I Tim. 4:1).

I've promised to share with you all some more intimate journey's I've had inside the McKittrick And today is the day my friends! I love talking about this more than I love talking about anything else in the world! This experience that I have been to 49 times in the last 9 years has fundamentally changed me as a human, a woman, a leader, a friend, a mother, and a wife. It has caused me to call into question my entire reality and what's actually possible in this world. So let me tell you a story. My story. From the first time I went... It was way back in August of 2012. I left my 9th-floor office on 31st street and 8th avenue, right across from the huge Macy's in Herald square. I decided to walk, because getting a cab on a Friday night in the city is next to impossible, and even though it was August, it was a nice night to be outside.  The walk was only 20 minutes down to 27th street between 9th and 10th Avenue in Chelsea. I met my friend, we got in line and a large man all in black looked at our ID, and stamped our hands. I was excited and nervous and just wanted to be inside already, inside this place they call "Sleep No More". It was my turn that week to figure out what we were going to do that Thursday night. Something that wasn't a bar or a restaurant. Something that was fun and different. So I researched! As we stood in line, outside against the brick building,  I thought I had a pretty good idea of what the night had in store. I assumed, from the online descriptions at the time, that this “show” was sort of an "art" installation, where we got to walk around and view contained "scenes" with live actors,  all while drinking cocktails and discussing the "experience".  I thought it was going to be different and entertaining, a perfectly cultured August evening in NYC. I had no idea that it would change my life.  Sleep No More is what they call “immersive theatre. It's a kind of theater that's more like an experience. Where you are part of the show.  The storyline is based on Shakespeare's Macbeth, with layers of Daphne Du Maurier's Rebecca, the true story of The Paisley Witch Trials of 1696, and a strong dose of the history of King James and Queene Anne all woven together in this dream-like intensity. The Sleep No More “experience” is set in 1939 in  a 5 story 100 room hotel of sorts, they call “The McKittrick”, replete with a  ballroom. A graveyard, a street filled with shops, a detective agency, it has the Macbeths and Macduff's living quarters, 3 speakeasies and so much more.   You experience the “show” by exploring, opening doors and drawers, rifling through books, by watching the actors play out their stories through dance and sometimes, if you're lucky, interacting with them.. If you see an actor that interests you, follow them, even if it means running upstairs two at a time!  My friend and I entered after they opened the big front door, we checked out coats in the long dark hallway. We walked up to the hotel check-in window and got a playing card, like from a deck of cards. We were directed to a dark stairway, stopping first to get our cards punched. We climb the steep, dark stairs and enter a candlelit maze and I have to keep my hands out to touch the walls so I can keep my balance?  The maze lets out into the ante room of a bustling speakeasy, also set in 1939.  The bartender offers you an old fashioned, shot of absinthe or a ...

I thought I heard a voice cry, “Sleep no more! Macbeth is murdering sleep.” Innocent sleep. Sleep that soothes away all our worries. Sleep that puts each day to rest. Sleep that relieves the weary laborer and heals hurt minds. Sleep, the main course in life’s feast, and the most nourishing.MacBeth Act 2 Scene 2There can be no doubt that Macbeth is a tragedy. It is filled with ominous prophecy and - above all else - death. The key plot point is the murder of King Duncan committed by the MacBeths to secure their power. From that murder, all others seem to flow. Murder and violence seems to haunt the Macbeths. Lady MacBeth in particular loses all touch with reality and ultimately ends her own life. She seems to suffer the most from the trauma. And that is what Dr. Lisa Grogan and I will be discussing today. We will examine the psychological symptoms displayed by Lady MacBeth and discuss how accurately they represent the trauma response. There is discussion of trauma, PTSD, and suicide in this episode, so if that will bother you, it may be best to skip this episode. Prince George's Shakespeare in the Parks

The Tragedy of Macbeth is presented as an hour-long audio drama set in the gangs of New York of the 1860's. This turbulent time finds us in the midst of the American Civil War and domestic unrest in the streets of New York City. The classic story stays the same: our tragic hero Macbeth stumbles upon the witches in the sewers, who fill his head with the prophecy of being the" king hereafter." Murder, mayhem, and a grab for power consume the Macbeths as they rise and fall during their short reign. This audio drama is produced by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Prince George’s County Department of Parks and Recreation, Arts and Cultural Heritage Division, with support from the Maryland State Arts Council.CASTBen Fisher – Porter, Lennox, First MurdererBess Kaye – MacduffCarol Spring – Witch 3, Lady Macduff, Gentlewoman, MusicianChristopher Dwyer – RossJack Schmitt – Malcolm, Second MurdererJames Finley – MacbethJared Michael Swain – Duncan, DoctorMadeline Belknap – Witch 2, Son, MusicianRachel Manu – Fleance, Donalbain, EnsembleRyan Sellers – BanquoStephanie Wilson – Lady MacbethTori Boutin – First Witch, MusicianCREWAlan Ernstein – Montpelier Arts Center Technical Director and Booth MasterBriana Manente – Production Stage ManagerChristel Stevens – ProducerChristopher Dwyer – Artistic DirectorKirk Walterick – Recording EngineerMac Owens – Sound Designer and Audio EngineerTori Boutin – Composer and Music DirectorSPECIAL THANKSBeth Crisman – Managing Director: Montpelier Arts CenterBradley Foster SmithKristina ManenteMaryland National Capitol Parks and Planning Commission Arts and Cultural Heritage Division

Since the 1990s, playwright and actor Steven Berkoff has been traveling the world performing a one-actor show called "Shakespeare’s Villains." It’s fitting, coming from the actor perhaps best known for playing Beverly Hills Cop’s Victor Maitland, that Berkoff promotes the show’s examination of Iago, Shylock, Richard III, the Macbeths, and others as “A Master Class in Evil.” Now, Berkoff has made a film of his performance. With additional material from "Henry V," it’s called "Shakespeare’s Heroes and Villains." We invited Steven Berkoff in to give us his thoughts on what Shakespeare’s villains have in common and why they hold such an enduring appeal. Berkoff is interviewed by Barbara Bogaev. I think “Macbeth” the one supreme drama because it is the one Christian drama; and I will accept the accusation of prejudice. But I mean by Christian (in this matter) the strong sense of spiritual liberty and of sin; the idea that the best man can be as bad as he chooses. You may call Othello a victim of chance. You may call Hamlet a victim of temperament. You cannot call Macbeth anything but a victim of Macbeth. The evil spirits tempt him, but they never force him; they never even frighten him, for he is a very brave man.-G.K. ChestertonSo we'll get to Macbeth in a second, but first ... apparently Hillary Clinton is a Shakespeare truther. There's this article in the New York Times Sunday Book Review, and if you read it you'll see that she, like, went out of her way to bring up the subject. Nobody asked her what she thought about Shakespeare. They just asked her what literary figure she'd like to have dinner with, and she decided to be cute and say "Shakespeare" because she'd like to see who really showed up. So yeah. If you needed another reason to believe that William Shakespeare wrote the plays attributed to William Shakespeare, there's that.Anyway, this is another episode of The Bookening. In fact it's part 2 of our series about Macbeth. You'll hear lots of discussion about our friends the Macbeths, and what we think makes them tick. Our heroes also argue that the witches are just that—witches.Next month we turn to the Prince of Darkness Himself: Dracula.★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Greg Doran is one of those lucky people who seem to have found his perfect place in life. From the age of 13, when his mother first took him to the theatre in Stratford, Shakespeare's been his passion; as a boy he dedicated himself to seeing every single Shakespeare play - sometimes managing to watch three Macbeths in a day. So - what better job than Artistic Director of our great national Shakespeare company, a role he took on 18 months ago. His production of Richard II with David Tennant in the lead opens on 10 October, and he's directing Henry IV next year with his partner Anthony Sher playing Falstaff. Doran doesn't come from a theatrical background - his father ran a nuclear power station. But his passion for music began early, thanks to a concert in the local village hall in Lancashire. A friend of his mother's, Mrs Sidebottom, got up on stage and sang 'Blow the Wind Southerly'. And young Greg was hooked. That haunting folk song begins his choice of music - sung in this case by Kathleen Ferrier. Other choices include Duke Ellington, a song by Cervantes, and a Vivaldi Concerto which changed Doran's life when he heard it in Paris. It was a low point - a love affair had ended, his ambition to be an actor was foundering. And the music spoke to him, and gave him a new direction. In Private Passions, he talks to Michael Berkeley about his passion for Shakespeare, and about his relationship with Antony Sher. Its foundations are a shared life in theatre, but also a love of food: when Anthony's depressed, Greg cooks for him the comfort food he ate as a child in South Africa. He's even learned how to make a special lamb stew - and he gives us the recipe: "I believe there is a Jewish saying that food is love. For me, tomato bredie is an expression of love." First broadcast in October 2013.
