Better late than never... After N'Golo Kante (5), Nicolas Anelka (4), and Patrick Vieria (3), Le Classique finalise their series on the best French players in Premier League history with 'le King' Cantona.Tom and Bappo reflect on his turbulent time in France before moves to Leeds and United, and contemplate the enormous cultural impact of this charismatic, unique, and brilliant trailblazer.
Podcast Intro: The Portugal Corner - Episode 177 - The Usual SuspectsWelcome to The Portugal Corner! The podcast where we dive into all things Portuguese soccer—the good, the bad, and the funny! It's St. Patrick's Day, and we're celebrating with some GuinnessIn a move that caught many by surprise, Chelsea has swooped in to secure two of Portugal's brightest young stars—Quenda and Dario Essugo. The Blues locked in deals worth €50M and €20M, respectively, on delayed loans. With Chelsea's track record of acquiring young talent, we discuss what the future holds for these rising midfielders and whether this move will help or hinder their development.Portugal's squad for the Nations League playoffs is out, and we analyze Roberto Martínez's selections. Is the midfield trio of Vitinha, João Neves, and Bruno Fernandes the right call? Will these choices propel the team to victory, or do we see cracks in the foundation?Sporting CP continues their dominant form, storming past Famalicão with a convincing 3-1 victory. The match saw Fresneda break the deadlock after a stunning run from "Thicc Vic". Famalicão kept things competitive by equalizing through a penalty just before halftime, but Sporting had the last laugh. "Thicc Vic" himself converts from the spot.Returning to domestic action, Benfica faced Rio Ave and started strong with a stunning strike from Orkun Kökçü. However, despite going 2-0 up, two sloppy defensive mistakes—one notably from Tino—allowed Rio Ave back into the match. Fortunately, Aturkoglu stepped up to restore order, securing the much-needed three points.Desperate for stability, Porto reverted to a back-four system, and it paid off with a solid 2-0 victory over AVS. Rising star Rodrigo Mora opened the scoring, bringing energy back into the squad. Fábio Vieira followed up with a thunderous one-timer to double the lead. AVS didn't help their case as Ignacio Rodriguez saw red early in the second half, giving Porto the advantage for the final 45 minutes.Guimarães' European campaign ended in disappointment as Real Betis walked into Portugal and delivered a crushing 4-0 defeat. Even Antony found himself on the scoresheet. However, the team bounced back on the weekend with a hard-fought 2-0 win over Estrela Amadora, with Thomas Handel and Arcanjo providing the goals.Bruno Fernandes continues to prove his worth, delivering a hat-trick (including two penalties) and an assist as Manchester United crushed Real Sociedad 4-1 in the Europa League. He followed it up with a goal against Leicester in a 3-0 weekend win, assisted by Dalot.Jota Silva, shinea for Nottingham Forest, scoring in a vital 4-2 victory over Ipswich. Nuno Espírito Santo's Nottingham Forest locks in third place with this crucial win.PSG survived a Champions League scare, advancing past Liverpool on penalties. Vitinha and Ramos kept their cool from the spot, while Darwin Núñez's miss proved costly. On the domestic front, Nuno Mendes scored his first Ligue 1 goal of the season in Le Classique, helping PSG secure a 3-1 win over Marseille and extend their lead at the top to a staggering 19 points. We took some heat for not nominating Mendes for last week's João Wonder—our bad!Another game, another goal for CR7. Ronaldo netted his 928th career goal as Al-Nassr defeated Al-Kholood .Toronto FC's home opener didn't go as planned, suffering a 2-1 defeat to Chicago Fire. Stonk of the Week: A jaw-dropping goal from a Phoenix Rising player in the USL.João Wonder (Best Portuguese Player of the Week): Bruno Fernandes for his four-goal week, further cementing his place as one of Portugal's top midfielders. Thanks for tuning in!

Arsenal-Liverpool, the Derby d'Italia, Le Classique…it's a serious Football Weekend. But all that takes a back seat to the big one: El Clásico, REAL MADRID vs BARCELONA, the premier grudge match in world football. Nobody does technical quality and steaming spite quite like these two, and the storylines abound heading into this 258th meeting of Spain's great powers. One Brazilian from each side—Vinicius Jr. for Madrid, Raphinha for Barça—scored a hat trick in the Champions League in midweek. They're two of the form players in Europe, with Vini a strong bet to take home the Ballon d'Or in a couple months' time, but there's also the 17-year-old sensation Lamine Yamal and some guy named Kylian Mbappé playing his first Clásico. It's an embarrassment of riches in the forward positions for both these sides—and in midfield, too: Barcelona have added EURO 2024 standout Dani Olmo to academy starlets Pedri and Gavi in the engine room, and could we see 39-year-old Luka Modrić in there on the other side next to Fede Valverde and Jude Bellingham? The matchups everywhere are mouthwatering, and joining us to preview the match is Paco Polit of La Liga Lowdown. He explained how Barcelona have changed under new coach Hansi Flick and how the German has got Robert Lewandowski firing again, with 12 of their astonishing 33 goals already this season; how Madrid remain inevitable in the Champions League, if not La Liga, under Don Carlo Ancelotti; and why fans of Los Blancos aren't overly taken with Mbappé's performances after so many years of speculation that he'd join the club. We also spared a minute to discuss the reports this week that La Liga is angling to stage a Barcelona-Atlético Madrid match in Miami, and the unfortunate fate of Paco's Valencia CF.If you're enjoying The Football Weekend, please give us a rating and leave a review! It will help spread the good word. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

PSG took on Strasbourg with a heavily rotated squad after the international break and kept the three points in the city of lights ahead of the UEFA Champions League night against PSV Eindhoven and later in the week, a trip to south to play Le Classique at the Stade Velodrome. Ligue 1 returned from the international break with the marquee fixture of the season, Paris Saint-Germain at Olympique de Marseille, and as usual, there were plenty of fireworks. On this episode of PSG Talking, I'm joined by Ethan from PSG Fan Club Boise and long-time contributor Marc Damon to discuss PSG's 2-0 win over Marseille at the Orange Vélodrome. We also look ahead to Wednesday's clash against Stade Rennais in the Coupe de France and discuss the lead-up to the match against FC Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League. We begin with Luis Enrique's starting lineup. Considering the injuries, did PSG play its best starting lineup possible? We also discuss Ousmane Dembélé's role as a false nine.Late in the first half, Lucas Beraldo was sent off with a straight red after VAR took a closer look at his challenge on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. We discuss the incident and the referee who made the questionable decision. To start the second half, Luis Enrique took off Randal Kolo Muani and whether the Frenchman has a long-term future at PSG.Vitinha opened up the scoring in the 53rd minute with a brilliant run and a perfectly placed shot. Vitinha has consistently shown up when PSG needs him most throughout the season, and it was no different against Marseille. We highlight his performance and what he's meant for PSG this season. In the 65th minute, there was more controversy as Kylian Mbappé was subbed off along with Dembélé. Both players left the pitch and went to the dressing room, but Mbappé, in particular, didn't look pleased with the decision. We discuss why Luis Enrique took off Mbappé and what it could mean for the rest of the season. We wrap up Le Classique by discussing Gonçalo Ramos' goal, whether he'll stay at PSG beyond this season, and Gianluigi Donnarumma's incredible performance, in which he made 10 saves. The show concludes with us previewing the match against Rennes this week in the semi-final of the Coupe de France and whether PSG is in a better position, having two more games to play than Barcelona before the two meet at the Parc des Princes on April 10.As always, thank you for listening, and be sure to subscribe and rate the show wherever you download your podcasts. In this episodes we look into Le Classique against Marseille and how PSG beat them well and truly with 10 players on the pitch for 50 minutes out of 90 and all this in front of 60 000 fuming fans. The red card involved some drama as you would imagine and we look into it all. After the match Kylian Mbappé posted a photograph of himself solemnly walking with a captain's armband in his hand in Marseille rain at the Stade de Velodrome. A very melancholic and dramatic image no doubt, but how do we read it while his team mates were celebrating the excellent victory over the arch-rivals. PSG women have made their way to the Champions League semi-finals and they will play against their domestic rivals Lyon there. Both teams are still alive in all competitions. It's very exciting season. Hopefully you enjoy the episode. Following their triumph over Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League last Tuesday, Paris Saint-Germain looked to climb the Ligue 1 ladder as a very poor Olympique de Marseille side paid a visit to the French capital. On this episode of PSG Talking, I'm joined by Ethan of PSG Fan Club Boise to discuss PSG's 4-0 win over Marseille. We break down Luis Enrique's starting lineup, breakout performances, Kylian Mbappé's injury, and look ahead to the next couple of matches on the fixture list.Up first, it's all about Le Classique. Luis Enrique went with an unconventional starting lineup, with three defenders and newcomer Bradley Barcola playing on the left flank behind Mbappé. We discuss the manager's flexibility, Barcola's performance, and how PSG's rebuilt defense is still learning to play together.PSG scored early and often against Marseille, with Achraf Hakimi kicking this off in the eighth minute with a brilliant free kick. We discuss his complete turnaround in recent weeks and how Manuel Ugarte's defensive prowess allows Hakimi to get forward and join the PSG attack.Mbappé won the free kick that led to Hakimi's goal, and while the Frenchman tried to continue, he eventually left the match in the first half with an ankle injury. We discuss the impact of the injury and whether Mbappé should feature against Clermont Foot before PSG travels to Newcastle United on October 4, for a big Champions League match. Finally, we discuss PSG's other two goalscorers, Randal Kolo Muani and Gonçalo Ramos. Both newcomers were on the verge of being classified as 007 (zero goals, zero assists in first seven matches), but Kolo Muani scored an opportunistic goal before halftime, and Ramos scored a difficult header in the second half and capped off an incredible counter move to wrap things up. We share our expectations for both attackers as the season progresses, and look ahead quickly to PSG's upcoming match against Newcastle. As always, thank you for listening, and be sure to subscribe and rate the show wherever you download your podcasts. We're also on Substack! Subscribe for free today to access premium PSG content.
A final score of 4-0. A big win for Paris Saint-Germain. Despite Kylian Mbappe leaving due to an injury, Les Parisiens were not stopped. Goncalo Ramos replaced Mbappe and went to score a brace. Les Parisiens need to build and keep the momentum going. Marseille's inability to challenge really hurts especially since they were coming off a brilliant Europa League 3-3 tie against Ajax.
