Part 2 of our interview with Shannon Eaves. "Her book, Sexual Violence and American Slavery: The Making of a Rape Culture in the Antebellum South, was published by UNC Press in 2024. This study examines how the rape and sexual exploitation of enslaved women created a rape culture that was woven into the very fabric of antebellum society, influencing daily life for both the enslaved and enslavers....Shannon earned her Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and currently serves as an Associate Professor of African American History here at the College of Charleston. She is a specialist in 19th century U.S. History, African American History, and Slavery and Gender in the Antebellum South" (Faculty page).  "It is impossible to separate histories of sexual violence and the enslavement of Black women in the antebellum South. Rape permeated the lives of all who existed in that system: Black and white, male and female, adult and child, enslaved and free. Shannon C. Eaves unflinchingly investigates how both enslaved people and their enslavers experienced the systematic rape and sexual exploitation of bondswomen and came to understand what this culture of sexualized violence meant for themselves and others. Eaves mines a wealth of primary sources including autobiographies, diaries, court records, and more to show that rape and other forms of sexual exploitation entangled slaves and slave owners in battles over power to protect oneself and one's community, power to avenge hurt and humiliation, and power to punish and eliminate future threats" (UNC Press). Frank is happy that Kathryn Frady is back from Florida. She was gone for a month to direct a production of Tosca for Gulfshore Opera. She stayed with her aunt-in-law in Bonita Springs. Kathryn had to wrangle a children's choir from Punta Gorda.  Kathryn got to sing Tosca's part during one of the orchestra rehearsals while the set was still being assembled behind her. She said it gave extra meaning to the “Vissi d'arte” (I lived for art) aria.  Kathryn got back in time to sing at the Rossini Festival on Saturday. She was listed as a solo artist but had other Marble City Opera singers join her. Kathryn said she almost invited Frank to join them even though he can't sing.  Kathryn said someone at the festival told her she heard Frank mention that Kathryn would be singing. Frank admits that he plugged the festival in a manner that it might have sounded like Kathryn was the headliner.  Frank was planting more fig trees on Saturday afternoon. That evening he and his wife Jere attended an ‘80s themed fundraiser party. Their costumes weren't as outrageous as everyone else's.  Frank gives Kathryn a “tree cookie” from a maple tree that was in his front yard. Steve's Tree Service removed two maples and three redbuds.  On the way home from Florida, Kathryn stopped at a truck stop in Georgia called Magnolia Plantation. She took a picture of some ceramic tortoises on the shelf. She bought a jar of fig preserves for Frank.  A few weeks ago Frank bought a packaged Chicago Hardy fig tree at a big home improvement store. He thought it looked dead but planted it in a flower pot anyway. After about three weeks, he took the dead fig twig back to the store and got store credit to buy another one. He saw two more dead ones on the shelf before finding one that had a tiny green leaf. He also noticed they were selling live Brown Turkey fig trees for $16. Kathryn thinks he should start selling fig cuttings.  Frank offered to give a Brown Turkey fig cutting to a church friend he saw in the parking lot. He also offered one to his neighbor, who said he wanted one but didn't know how to plant it. Frank dug a hole and planted a rooted Brown Turkey cutting in his neighbor's side yard. He had also previously buried some extra unrooted cuttings in the neighbor's backyard in case any take root and survive.  This episode is sponsored by Steve's Tree Service. In this episode, Anne Marie talks to The Slave Dwelling Project founder Joe McGill. Joe shares his journey and passion project. According to theslavedwellingproject.com, The Slave Dwelling Project envisions a future in which the hearts and minds of Americans acknowledge a more truthful and inclusive narrative of the history of The Nation, one that honors the contributions of all our people, is embedded and preserved in the buildings and artifacts of people of African heritage and inspires all Americans to acknowledge their ancestors. One of the ways Joe brings attention to his mission is he actually hosts sleepovers at intact slave dwellings throughout the United States. Joe has rolled out his sleeping bag at slave dwelling structures in 25 states! Each sleepover begins with an often difficult dialogue, led by Joe, with his fellow campers, unpacking the truth about the history of the institution of slavery in the United States. The Slave Dwelling Project website: https://slavedwellingproject.orgSlave Dwelling Project Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/slavedwellingproject/Slave Dwelling Project Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SlaveDwellingProject/Slave Dwelling Project Twitter: https://twitter.com/slavedwellingConfederates in the Attic: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confederates_in_the_AtticTo Support Armchair Historians:Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/armchairhistoriansKo-fi: https://ko-fi.com/belgiumrabbitproductionsSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/armchairhistorians)

Don’t you just hate it when you’re walking in the yard of an old farmhouse and there is a ghost staring out the window? How about that strange noise some folks claim they have heard coming from the barn? And do you sometimes get the feeling that someone is looking over your shoulder only to turn and find no one there? Those are stories that Kenneth Brown, an archaeologist from the University of Houston, heard as he went digging at Magnolia Plantation near Natchitoches, Louisiana. Brown did not spot any ghosts himself, but he did learn much about the lives and traditions of those who occupied those grounds – including post-war freed slaves. Brown, who was a guest expert on the Destination America show “Ghost Brothers" which hosted it's first episode at the plantation, joins Errol Laborde, executive editor of Louisiana Life, along with podcast producer Kelly Massicot, to tell stories about what archaeologists are learning from plantation life. Oh yes, we will also hear about what he found in the ground for his exhibit at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture.

He uses the experience to talk about the importance of preserving these historic structures so that we may have full and honest conversations about our country's history.Because of COVID, I interviewed Joe outside, on a porch within sight of the slave quarters at Magnolia. It was a chilly morning, but a rich conversation. We both lost track of time and when Joe checked his watch, he realized he was late for a tour he was supposed to give, so you'll hear that the conversation ends rater abruptly. I could have talked with Joe all day. My apologies to the folks on the tour for Joe's delay. All my fault.

Add a shot of moonshine to that sweet tea and work on that southern drawl, ‘cause this week the BnB crew are bringing us tales from Haunted Plantations. Melissa handles the first harvest with the tale of Magnolia Plantation, where slaves became shares croppers (Happy Juneteenth!) and overseers became ghosts, paired with German brewery Rieder’s Schwarz Mann Black Lager. Then Vanessa picks some cotton and some stories about the Loretta Lynn Plantation, where ghosts will steal your boots if you’re dumb enough to sleep with boots on, paired with Stone Brewing’s I’m Peach Double IPA. Who will win in the battle of catholic voodoo hymns VS country twang? Listen and find out!
