Mark David Hall, professor at Regent University, bravely makes his second appearance on the show to talk about his 2023 book, Proclaim Liberty Throughout All the Land, a history of Christianity's influence on American freedom and equality.
Mark David Hall is back on the podcast to talk about Christian nationalism, only this time, we're talking about the broader topic of religious nationalism globally. While Christian nationalism has received quite a bit of (inflated) attention in the US, there has been a noticeable trend towards religious nationalism around the world. It was a trend I picked up on and wrote about in a blog post (see below) ten years ago, but Mark and I discuss this trend now because earlier this year, Pew Research published a study on religious nationalism and how America and Christian nationalism measures up with other countries and their dominant religions. The Pew study validates a major claim Mark has been writing and speaking on, namely, that the concerns about Christian nationalism in America are indeed overblown. However, the study does much more than by giving us a window into something I only hinted at in my doctoral dissertation research: political culture influences state action. Religious nationalisms of all stripes and inherently political ideologies that seek to define and shape political culture a particular way, which, proportional to their population size in a country could have large effects on domestic and international politics. This was a groundbreaking and important study by Pew, and well worth taking the time to read and digest.Subscribe to Tim Talks Politics on Substack for the full show notes (30% for podcast listeners)!
Is Christian Nationalism an existential threat to America? Or is it a tactic to marginalize conservative voices today in the public arena? In this episode, I am joined by two scholars (Mark David Hall and Michael W. Austin) to discuss and debate the nature of Christian nationalism, the church and how Christians should bring their faith into the political realm. Constitutional Chats hosted by Janine Turner and Cathy Gillespie
It's 1787 and you are a delegate to the Constitutional Convention. You represent a midsize state and arriving 3 days late, you encounter James Madison's Virginia Plan to allocate representation among the states proportionally. You realize how this would be a detriment to smaller states who are needed to ratify the Constitution. What do you do? You are Roger Sherman from Connecticut and you draft the Connecticut Compromise which allocates representation in the lower chamber based on population but guarantees equal state representation in the upper chamber. Why was this necessary and what other provisions did it entail? To answer these questions, we are pleased welcome Mark David Hall, Professor in the Robertson School of Government at Regent University and scholar on early America.
Christian nationalism has gotten a lot of play the last few years, particularly in the rhetoric of its opponents in journalism, academia, and even the White House. According to its critics, Christian nationalism is a malevolent ideology that has allied itself with Donald Trump to capture conservative politics in America with the aim of bringing about a dystopian Christian theocracy akin to The Handmaid's Tale. Mark David Hall argues in his new book, Who's Afraid of Christian Nationalism?, that such claims are overblown and that Christian nationalism is not the existential threat the critics claim. In fact, Christian nationalism may not even be a helpful phrase to describe the thinking of American Christians when it comes to politics in general. In this interview, Mark and I chart the rise of the term turned pejorative, explore both journalistic and academic writing on Christian nationalism, evaluate the data connected with that research, and discuss how those (very) few Christians who do seek to make an affirmative case for Christian nationalism aren't even representative of most Christians. A recent MSNBC article claimed that Donald Trump uses Christianity as a political prop to advance a theocracy and Kamala Harris practices the Christian faith she was raised in and embraces pluralism. Many on the Left call the Right Christian nationalists, and paint Christian nationalism as an existential threat to America, democracy, and the Church. Is this correct? To talk with us about this important issue is Mark David Hall, professor at Regent University and is the author of the recent book Who's Afraid of Christian Nationalism? Today I am sharing why knowing history will give you fortitude and encouragement in the current political and cultural climate plus a truth concerning birds to give you peace and hope.History Is a wise companion and counselor.Knowing history allows us to have a better frame of reference for how the Lord has worked his character, his fulfillment of promises, and allows us to draw strength instead fastness from those who have walked before us during difficult and hard times.History reminds us we are not alone in our trials.**Note about end times and eschatology - If you read the last 10 or 20 years of current history, you will not have a proper view of eschatology in light of Scripture and all the the Lord has done and is doing. History is a wise companion and helps us learn from the past and build for the future. How has it shaped American history and politics? Are the Founding Fathers' principles rooted in Christian beliefs? Through a nuanced exploration, Hall separates myths from historical truths, providing listeners with a well-rounded understanding of this complex topic.Whether you're a student of history, a scholar, or simply interested in the intersection of faith and politics, this episode offers valuable insights into the ongoing debate over America's religious and cultural identity. “Christian Nationalism has garnered significant attention in recent years, owing to the potential dangers it poses for American democracy. Its specter has spurred newfound interest in the role of religion in American public life with fresh considerations of familiar questions: Is religion resurging as a force in politics? Will America's Christian majority restrict the rights of religious minorities? Is Christian nationalism a real threat, or a small, extreme faction with outsized press coverage?” So asks Christian Nationalism: A New Approach, a December 2023 report by Neighborly Faith. In this episode of the Influence Podcast, I talk to Kevin Singer, Ryan Burge, and Mark David Hall about that report and the questions it raises. I'm George P. Wood, executive editor of Influence magazine and your host. Kevin Singer is president of Neighborly Faith, a nonprofit whose mission is to provide “research and events introducing Christians to neighbors of every faith.” Ryan Burge is associate professor of political science at Eastern Illinois University and an ordained Baptist pastor; he posts regularly at Graphs About Religion. Mark David Hall is a professor at Regent University's Robertson School of Government and a senior fellow at the Center for Religion, Culture, and Democracy, where he directs its Religious Liberty in the States initiative. Gary concludes his response to a recent Wallbuilders show with Mark David Hall on the influence of R.J. Rushdoony. As a historian, Mark David Hall doesn't appear to have done much research at all on Rushdoony. However, there is a simpler answer: many others have also professed ignorance of his writings (on nearly everything) in order to distance themselves from his theonomic and theocratic views.
Gary continues his response to a recent episode from David Barton featuring historian Mark David Hall. David Barton's article about the 10 Commandments and American law: http://www.moseshand.com/studies/db400yrs.html
Gary begins a series of three podcasts that respond to a recent show from David Barton's Wallbuilders organization. Barton's topic was Christian Nationalism and his guest was Mark David Hall, who makes the erroneous claim that Rousas J. Rushdoony was a small and insignificant voice on American history and church and state. Gary takes issue with this and discusses why.

Christians and Christianity are treated almost universally unfairly in discussions of American history in secular universities, Dr. Mark David Hall explains in this discussion of his new book, Proclaim Liberty Throughout All the Land: How Christianity Has Advanced Freedom and Equality for All Americans. He discusses with Dr. Jeff Myers how since the mid 20th century secular leftists have largely read Christianity out of our nation's history—and when they have noted what they believe to be the impact of the faith and the faithful on the country they've viewed it through all the wrong lenses. The remedy, he explains, is to examine history factually, not ideologically. When we do, we discover that Christians have been a force for liberty and equality for all Americans—on issues as varied as slavery and abortion. Florida Republicans pass bills on pronoun usage at schools, ban on diversity programs. A 12-year-old at was allegedly sent home from school and told he's making people feel unsafe for wearing a shirt that read “there are only 2 genders.” Dennis searches for example of the terms “hardline progressive” and “secular extremism” …and finds none. A common narrative is that liberty and equality have been advanced primarily when America's leaders embrace progressive manifestations of religion or reject faith altogether. Mark David Hall joins Dennis to discuss the role Christianity has played in advancing liberty and equality for all citizens. His book: Proclaim Liberty Throughout All the Land demonstrates that Christianity is responsible for advancing liberty and equality for all Americans https://a.co/d/6BybTKJ After a 26% loss in revenue, the Anheuser-Busch CEO supposedly disavows the Dylan Mulvaney snafu … but takes no responsibility for it at all. If you were to be asked to name the five liberties secured by the First Amendment in the Constitution, and then choose which one was most important, what would you say? If it's not religious freedom, then perhaps you should rethink. Yes, freedom of speech is important. Yes, the ability to start a media outlet to report on the government is important. And moving away from the First Amendment, to the Second, it's irrefutable that the ability of the citizenry to keep and bear arms is a subtle reminder to the government about the power of the people. But religious freedom for a nation that's rooted in individualism, based on a concept of rights coming from God -- well now, that makes religious freedom the most important notion to preserve and protect. Still don't agree? Well listen up, then. Mark David Hall has much to say.
