An interview with Dr. Jonathan McIntosh on several of his presentations at The George Buchanan Forum. We discuss errors in Calvin's view of civil government, and we mention the God-ordained check on abuse and tyranny. We then discuss McIntosh's outline of a classical or Thomistic natural law tradition approach to libertarianism, and his critique of the Aristotelian-Thomist view of politics. We also discuss the neglected figurative or typological character of old covenant civil law by scholastic thinkers. We conclude with information about The George Buchanan Forum and other articles from McIntosh.https://reformedlibertarians.com/023Main Points of Discussion00:00 Introduction00:32 Episode description01:30 Guest intro and background10:11 Errors of Calvin's view of civil government15:21 Value in such critique and why Calvin's erroneous view is popular19:53 Comments on Reformers vs Calvin and obsta principiis23:03 Natural Law Libertarianism31:59 Moral realism, harm, and double effect39:32 Errors of a Thomist view of politics43:56 Neglected “figurative” or typological character of Mosaic civil law in a scholastic view51:18 Respective specifications of moral and civil law56:00 Errors of an establishmentarian view1:00:21 The George Buchanan forumAdditional Resources:Links for Dr. Jonathan McIntosh- on fb: https://facebook.com/jonathan.mcintosh.161- on x: https://x.com/DrJMcIntosh- blog: https://jonathansmcintosh.wordpress.com - other blog: https://naturallawlibertarian.wordpress.com - His book The Flame Imperishable: Tolkien, St. Thomas, and the Metaphysics of Faerie:https://amazon.com/dp/1621383156 - articles: "Theonomy, General Equity, and Libertarianism"https://reformedlibertarians.com/theonomy-general-equity-and-libertarianism-by-jonathan-mcintosh/ “Aquinas and Libertarianism: Coercion and the Common Good in the Summa's Definition of Law”https://www.marketsandmorality.com/index.php/mandm/article/view/1587 “The Libertarian Aquinas”https://libertarianchristians.com/2021/04/05/the-libertarian-aquinas/ Links for The George Buchanan Forum- website: https://tgbf.org - on FB: https://facebook.com/TheGeorgeBuchananForum - on X: https://x.com/BuchananForum - on YT: https://youtube.com/@thegeorgebuchananforum6899 - Presentation by Jeremy Bunch on “George Buchanan & Scots Reformed Resistance Theory”:https://youtube.com/watch?v=JZcpcYqhs5o The Silence Of St. Thomas, by Josef Pieperhttps://amazon.com/dp/1890318787 On the “School of Salamanca” or late Spanish Scholastics' (early modern Roman Catholic Thomists) economic views:https://mises.org/mises-wire/true-founders-economics-school-salamanca ( See also Alejandro Cafuen's Faith and Liberty: The Economic Thought of the Late Scholasticshttps://store.mises.org/Faith-and-Liberty-The-Economic-Thought-of-the-Late-Scholastics-P170.aspx )A more favorable view of Van Til, contra Aquinashttps://reformedforum.org/podcasts/ctc745/ ( See the full course on the Doctrine of Revelation by Lane Tipton here:https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLt5DwS6MFoBBE-_RkMx4umfvDlligzvj1 )The 1st presentation discussed: “Evaluating Calvin: A Critique of On Civil Government,” by Jonathan McIntoshhttps://youtube.com/watch?v=DS9RW3e7eMQ The Reformed Political Resistance bibliographyhttps://tinyurl.com/RefoPoliResistBib Johannes Althusius rightly contradicts Calvin on political and domestic abuse in Politica, chapter 18, section 105https://oll.libertyfund.org/titles/althusius-politica#lf0002_footnote_nt_293_ref Rutherford in Lex Rex under question 23, explains that there is no God-given requirement to suffer abuse or tyrannyhttps://books.google.com/books?id=SK8rAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA111 The 2nd presentation discussed: “Towards a Natural Law Libertarianism,” by Jonathan McIntoshhttps://youtube.com/watch?v=TSQvD9wNXCg ( See also: “Why We Need To Get Serious About Natural Rights,” by Jonathan McIntoshhttps://youtube.com/watch?v=3aO0L1q4CUc David VanDrunen on “What Is Natural Law?”https://credomag.com/article/what-is-natural-law/ Aggression vs harm: “How Do Libertarians Define Crime?,” by Kerry Baldwinhttps://mereliberty.com/lci/how-do-libertarians-define-crime/ On the Doctrine of Double Effecthttps://plato.stanford.edu/entries/double-effect/ Writings by Herman Dooyeweerdhttps://herman-dooyeweerd.blogspot.com The 3rd presentation discussed: “Figuratively Speaking: the Old Testament, Natural Law, and Libertarianism,” by Jonathan McIntoshhttps://youtube.com/watch?v=97OvUMcYKTk Economic and political essays by Frederic Bastiathttps://mises.org/library/book/bastiat-collection For A New Liberty by Murray Rothbardhttps://mises.org/library/book/new-liberty-libertarian-manifesto The Ethics Of Liberty by Murray Rothbard- text: https://cdn.mises.org/The%20Ethics%20of%20Liberty%2020191108.pdf - audio: https://mises.org/podcasts/ethics-liberty “Against Civil Establishment Of Religion,” by Gregory Baushttps://reformedliber...
In this episode of the Podcast for Cultural Reformation, Dr. Joe Boot and Pastor Nate Wright respond to the criticisms raised by Andrew Isker and CJay Engel from the Contra Mundum podcast. They engage in an in-depth discussion about the significance of possessing a biblical worldview, addressing misconceptions and providing thorough explanations on topics such as theology, philosophy, epistemology, and mathematics. Dr. Boot underscores that a biblical worldview is grounded in the full revelation of Scripture, which serves as the ultimate authority for all aspects of life, including politics, science, and economics. Additionally, the duo explores the underlying motivations and flawed reasoning behind some of the arguments presented by Isker, Engel, Wolfe, and the reactionary "dank" right, aiming to reinforce the importance of a biblically rooted perspective in all areas of culture and knowledge. Based on my previous natural law episode, today I look at possible traces of theonomy throughout history. Theonomy is often accused of being novel or modern, originating with 20th Century theologians such as Bahnsen, North, and Rushdoony. But it seems that an argument could be made that theonomy is much older than that. Were there Christians during the Roman Empire that advocated for greater conformity to the Old Testament civil laws? Was even medieval Ireland influenced by the Mosaic law code? Today I tackle those questions in the hopes of tracing the threads of theonomy throughout history. And, as always, if you have any questions or comments, please email me at thegbgpodcast@gmail.com.You can follow also me on Facebook or Twitter, or go to http://www.ericluppold.com/And if you would like to support the show, please consider becoming a patron!

Send us a textThis week Greg sat down with Josiah Stowe. Josiah is the owner of Dominion Wealth Strategists. They discussed the affect the "Trump Tariffs" as well as inflation in general will have on the average american, as well as small business. They discussed a pragmatic approach to investing and real estate in the current economy, the sinfulness of an income tax, and questioned what economic laws they would institute under their version of theonomy. Kicking off today's episode is a response to Dr. Adi Schlebusch's article (itself a response) on Lancastrian Theonomy and then moving on to a reaction of a debate that Chris Hume of the Lancaster Patriot did with an online troll.

Theonomy, also known as Christian Reconstructionism, has seen a revival in recent decades. The early movement, led by R.J. Rushdoony, Gary North, and Greg Bahnsen, taught what Bahnsen described as “the abiding validity of the Mosaic law in exhaustive detail.” But how does this teaching align with Scripture and the Reformed tradition? In this video, Scott sits down with Dr. Sam Waldron and Dr. Tom Hicks to discuss their new book, Theonomy Old and New: A Reformed Baptist Assessment. They examine the historical roots of Theonomy, its postmillennial and ethical distinctives, and the modern rebranding as “General Equity Theonomy.”
Chris Hume and Nolan Corcoran have a spirited informal debate on theonomy, focusing especially on the concept of legal precedent.Read Nolan's article: https://nolan-corcoran.com/blog/the-convergence-of-reformed-political-theoryRead Chris' article: https://futureofchristendom.org/divergence-between-theonomy-and-christian-nationalism/
In this TALKS Episode Tim engages with journalist Heath Drusen, who spent a year immersed in the world of Christian nationalism, particularly focusing on Doug Wilson's influence in Moscow, Idaho. They explore the nuances of Christian nationalism, including its roots in Theonomy and Dominionism, the patriarchal structures it promotes, and the alarming implications for American society. Heath shares insights from his interviews, revealing the extreme views held by leaders in this movement and the serious threat they pose to democracy and individual freedoms. Luke begins the episode by focusing on what he believes to be a lack of emphasis and understanding by theonomists on God's governmental system known as Theocracy. Then, he reads through an article critiquing theonomy by Pastor Tom Hicks called "Why Theonomy Is Unbiblical." Thanks for listening!
Does the Bible provide the necessary laws and framework for the proper functioning of civil government? On this episode of The Lancaster Patriot Podcast, Chris Hume interacts with the idea that theonomists are off-base to claim that the Bible is "sufficient" for politics. Chris explains the two senses in which we use the term "sufficient" in the context of the Bible. He discusses how non-legislative theonomists acknowledge the need for wisdom and prudence in obtaining "new information" to render just verdicts, but insist that the laws given in Scripture are enough (i.e., we do not need new laws).
Gary discusses two new books now available from American Vision, Gary's North's Victim's Rights and Gary DeMar's newest book Prophecy Wars. These two have more in common than might be apparent to many, but both are essentially apologetic works about controversial topics about the Bible.
Luke reads and comments on Dr. Adi Schlebusch's (of the Pactum Institute) article criticizing non-legislative theonomy, including Dr Schlebusch's erronious claim that Lancastrian Theonomy wants to abolish the office of civil magistrate.
Dr Josh Howard, filmmaker Nathan Anderson, and pastor and podcaster Cory Wing cover the recent interview by Jon Wright and Dr Stephen Wolfe, including critiques on the importance of eschatology in politics, natural law and its limitations and more.Stephen Wolfe interview (Youtube)
Marek Kizer recently posted a video in response to the Saint-Maricle immigration debate in which he critiqued the position of non-legislative theonomy. In the spirit of brotherly debate and edification, Marek joins Chris Hume on this episode of The Lancaster Patriot Podcast to informally debate the idea of establishing justice without a legislative branch. Enjoy what we hope will be the first of many Hume-Kizer dialogues!Watch Marek's original response video: https://youtu.be/SHRgu5R0C5Y?siJDsjEaeIAI5f97 Watch Chris' video about Sen. Another buzzword within popular culture today is "Christian Nationalism." What is it? What are its chief tenets? Tune in to this episode for an introductory answer to a growing question.Resources:Church Matters: A New Christian Authoritarianism?: Christian Nationalism, Theonomy, and Magisterial Protestantism - Jonathan Leeman
Joel Webbon recently claimed that theonomists are essentially libertarians (and that libertarians are essentially "libs"). Is this an accurate description of the theonomic position? Or is it a serious straw manning based on using Joel McDurmon as the poster child for theonomy? On this episode of The Lancaster Patriot Podcast, Chris Hume is joined by Joel Saint, Luke Saint, and Travis Schmalhofer (the boys are back!). Listen as they discuss liberalism, libertarianism, and non-legislative theonomy.
Join Luke Saint as he begins the Advent season by addressing and responding to objections to theonomy. As a bonus, he'll also address the social-justice-sewing-circle anarchists (trust us, they're real)! Don't miss this engaging discussion and the opportunity to learn more about theonomy.
In this episode we are listening in to the sixth session from the 2024 Pactum Conference, God's Good Law. This session is titled “Theonomy and the Law” from conference speaker, David VanDrunen.
In this episode of Theology Applied, Pastor David Reece is put to the test by Pastor Joel Webbon - Does theonomy have a mechanism for mitigating immigration? In other words, in a theonomic society, what happens if 4 billion people suddenly choose to make a profession of Christian Faith, pledge allegiance to America's customs/culture, commit to work hard (without receiving any welfare benefits), agree to go through a legal process, and desire to immigrate to America? Does the theonomist have any biblical argument to say no? Or does the theonomist simply have to sit back and welcome half the world into his country? Get your tickets now for our 2025 Conference. In this episode of Theology Applied, Pastor Joel Webbon and Pastor David Reece explore the intricate relationship between law, morality, and the state. They discuss the distinctions between natural law and theonomy, the role of the state in legislating morality, and the implications of tyranny and managerialism in contemporary governance. The conversation highlights the need for a biblical understanding of natural law and its limitations, especially in light of the curse on nature. On today's episode, I respond to a recent video published by Dr. Stephen Wolfe. Wolfe, the author of The Case for Christian Nationalism, critiqued the theonomic perspective, specifically a version of it in which there is no legislative body. While I hold Dr. Wolfe in the highest respect, I wanted to offer a thorough response in defense of theonomy. As Christians, we ought to consider what it means to love our neighbor both as individual believers and as a community. My hope is that this response helps to move the conversation forward in that direction. Here is Dr. Wolfe's entire critique of theonomy: Theonomy vs. Natural LawIf you have any questions or comments, please email me at thegbgpodcast@gmail.com.You can follow also me on Facebook or Twitter, or go to http://www.ericluppold.com/And if you would like to support the show, please consider becoming a patron!

Luke continues his response to author Dr. Stephen Wolfe's questions and objections to non-legislative theonomy. In part 2, Dr. Wolfe indicates his surprising unawareness of historical biblical jurisprudence, and wonders what the world would look like without politicians and the nanny state.
Luke Saint reacts to a video wherein Dr. Stephen Wolfe, author of The Case For Christian Nationalism, details non-legislative theonomy (but does not get to finish...we will distribute part two soon). In this first part of his analysis, Luke contrasts Lancastrian Theonomy with Dr. Wolfe's Christian nationalism/natural law legislation and clears up some misunderstandings.
In this episode of Marked by Grace, Pastor Heath explains the meaning of theonomy.
Can you legislate morality? Many Christians answer with a confident "no." But the same people who answer that way would likely not be in favor of repealing laws against murder or theft. If the law doesn't legislate morality, what does it legislate? In this episode of Sermon B-Sides, Pastor Jon and Pastor Rusten continue to discuss the relevance of the Law of the Covenant for how we understand civil law today. They discuss topics like God prioritizing individual responsibility, Theonomy, and laws outlawing wizardry and witchcraft. They also continue to critique the way many Christians have been shy about seeking God's vision of justice in our modern context. We hope you enjoy, and as usual, if you have any questions for Sermon B-Sides or anything else, email us at pastor@coramdeochurch.org.

Send us a textThis week Greg sat down with Austin Brown. Austin is an author, theologian, and Churchman. Austin gave us the history and theological reasoning behind the doctrine of General Satisfaction of Christ's atonement, in opposition to the doctrine of Limited Atonement. Austin has debated this issue, and we also discussed this doctrine in light of church history and the Reformers. What did they believe? This was an informative episode! Enjoy! Send us a textWhat does it mean to be a Christian nationalist in today's world? Join us on "More Than Medicine" as we unpack this complex and often controversial term with our distinguished guest, Arthur Hampton. Arthur sheds light on the nuances between theonomic and non-theonomic Christian nationalism, offering a detailed explanation of theonomy and its distinction from theocracy. We also delve into how Old Testament civil laws fit into modern governance, drawing insights from influential thinkers like Stephen Wolfe and Doug Wilson. Wolfe's book "A Case for Christian Nationalism" and Wilson's "Mere Christendom" present differing visions of what a Christian nation could look like, providing a rich discussion on the topic. Our conversation takes a historical turn as we contrast the roles of preachers in the face of societal pressures, inspired by the lives of Martin Niemöller and Dietrich Bonhoeffer. We critique Stephen Wolfe's two kingdoms theology, exploring its inconsistencies with Christian nationalism and the challenges of applying biblical laws within civil governance. Lastly, we dive into Doug Wilson's vision, emphasizing the transformative power of evangelism and the importance of public acknowledgment of Christ's lordship. This episode is packed with thought-provoking insights on balancing secularism with religious commitment and the role of Christians in shaping society. Don't miss this enlightening discussion that's both timely and deeply relevant.https://www.jacksonfamilyministry.comhttps://bobslone.com/home/podcast-production/
Gary discusses pro-abortion nonsense being spoken by Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear against Vice-Presidential candidate JD Vance. The level of irrationality being promoted by the party of death is stunning, yet media personalities and talking heads continue to swallow and repeat the insanity. We discuss the teaching mission of the institutional church, its relation to the church's statements of faith, and what the institutional church must and may not teach about politics on several important points. We talk about the Reformed confessional view of submission to civil governance, the recent failure of some churches in the face of unlawful state dictates, the error of theonomic views, and how a biblically Reformed covenantal hermeneutic informs a correct view of general equity.https://reformedlibertarians.com/018Main Points of Discussion00:00 Introduction00:32 Episode description01:00 Why are we discussing this?02:15 What is the church's teaching mission?05:07 One way the Reformed confessions are part of the church's mission07:34 False teaching about submission to God-ordained civil governance13:43 Not a matter of political theory14:53 False teaching of original and so-called “general equity theonomy”19:28 Proper meaning of general equity24:30 The Reformed biblical covenantal hermeneutic30:39 Recap32:53 Disestablishmentarianism and Biblical criterion of proportional retributionAdditional Resources:What Does Romans 13 Say About Civil Government?https://reformedlibertarians.com/002Why Is The Right Of Resistance Important?https://reformedlibertarians.com/006Answers to Objections to Reformed Confessional View of Romans 13https://reformedlibertarians.com/episode/why-isnt-the-state-biblically-justified-resolving-romans-13-objections/Annotated bibliography of Reformed Political Resistance Theologyhttps://tinyurl.com/RefoPoliResistBibPaper and video presentation of “Theonomy, General Equity, and Libertarianism” by Jonathan McIntoshhttps://reformedlibertarians.com/theonomy-general-equity-and-libertarianism-by-jonathan-mcintoshExcerpt from “Men In Combat Over The Civil Law: ‘General Equity' in WCF 19.4” by Peter Wallace and Craig Troxelhttps://sites.google.com/view/general-equity/Lecture series on Reformed Covenant Theology in systematic, biblical, and practical perspectives by Lee Ironshttps://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwrDNUO5MDu9WPd6FaReLxZkaK7VO8plEVideo explaining the relations between the Abrahamic, Old Mosaic, and New Covenants, by Lee Ironshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_ScAhK-s2s5 videos explaining the typological works principle in the Old Mosaic Covenant, by Lee Ironshttps://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwrDNUO5MDu-vEf9AeUSZt8UY53E7OYnFThe Westminster Confession of Faith (1788)https://opc.org/wcf.htmlThe Belgic Confession of Faith (1958)https://threeforms.org/the-belgic-confession/Resources on the false teaching of Theonomy- Meredith G. Theonomy is predicated on the Triune God but it pertains to a certain cosmology. So, how are Christians to think of theonomy and its application in relation to a legal system the structure and content of which are now divorced from both its history and the cosmology that gave rise to it? David tackles that subject with a new two-part thesis for “applied theonomy.”
Gary discusses several recent news stories about Christians trying to have "dialogues" with leftists about various topics. These types of "sit-downs" are always initiated by non-Leftists and never accomplish anything but further accommodation on the Right.
