Food is a universal language and the key to bridging our deepest divides can be as simple as sharing a meal. In her newbook, Table for 51: Lessons Learned from Sharing Meals Across America, Shari Leid embarks on a  journey to connect with people from all walks of life—demonstrating how food can serve as a powerful bridge  across political and cultural divides.Shari's 50 States Project took her to all corners of the U.S., where she intentionally satdown to meals with individuals of diverse ages, races, political beliefs, and socioeconomicbackgrounds. By focusing on the shared humanity of breaking bread, Shari bypassedcontentious topics and created safe spaces for vulnerable, bias-free conversations. Her story is a timely and powerful reminder of how intentional acts of connection can bring people together, even in today's polarized climate.

This week on The Nick Halaris Show we are featuring Melissa Walker, the Head of the Giving Circles Program at the States Project, an organization focused on leveraging the consistently overlooked and massively underestimated power possessed by State legislatures in our system.  On top of being a passionate civic activist, Melissa is a popular author of teen novels and an accomplished magazine contributor.Ready to dive in? Listen to this episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music and YouTubeor on your favorite podcast platform.I wanted to have Melissa on the show to learn more about the States Project and the role they are trying to play in improving our American democracy.  In this day and age, when hardly a citizen can even name their state representatives let alone know what policies they stand for, Melissa and her colleagues at the States Project are smart to focus here.  While the big-money players have all but captured the national scene, State legislature elections are as accessible as they are impactful.  The American Constitution grants vast power to the states and state-level laws are often much more impactful to citizens' daily lives than Federal laws.   Tune in to this inspiring episode to learn:  Stay tuned to the end to learn why Melissa set aside her thriving career as an author to work on the States Project full-time and why she believes this work is the most powerful thing she can do today.  As always, I hope you enjoy this episode.  Please like and follow The Nick Halaris Show. It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! Emma speaks with Aaron Kleinman, director of research for the States Project at Future Now, to discuss what to watch next week on Election Day. Then, she speaks with Georgia State Rep. Ruwa Romman to discuss her after-action plan upon voting for Kamala Harris. First, Emma runs through updates on early voting, swing state polling, Trump's garbage stunt, PA voting, Elon's Super PAC exploitation, Trump's healthcare and immigration agenda, Biden's state department coverup of Israel's genocide, Israel's demolition of southern Lebanon, and flash floods in Spain, before watching Jesse Watters prove exactly why conservative men and such a ridiculous danger to their spouses. Aaron Kleinman then joins, as he and Emma jump right into addressing this election's role as yet another “closest” election in US history, what signs point to that not being the case (largely favoring Harris), and why the thin margin being shown in polling must be at least addressed by the Harris campaign. Kleinman then steps back to parse through the “demolition derby” that is the state legislature races across the country, including the wildly close races across Pennsylvania's Senate and House, the Democrats' push in Florida and Wisconsin, and the role certain North Carolina races play as bellwethers for the US presidential election, before wrapping up with a quick assessment of the key legislatures Dems are seeking to flip, and what to make of the GOP push in Blue havens like New York and California. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they parse a little deeper through the absurdity of Trump's garbage stunt, talk with JR from Philly about polling problems, and address the topic of pacifist invasion defense with Alfred from Texas. They also unpack TYT's shallow discussion on fascism, Garrett from Northern Virginia discusses misinformation around late-term abortions, and Elon Musk struggles to capture the hearts of the US electorate with his blatant sexism and exploitation. It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma speak with Aaron Kleinman, director of research for the States Project at Future Now, to discuss the biggest state legislature races coming up in November. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Israel's mass slaughter in Lebanon, US troop presence in the Middle East, Harris' lead in Michigan and Wisconsin, Nebraska's sole electoral vote, GOP controversy, Missouri's death penalty, VISA's potential anti-trust violation, Exxon's lies, UNWRA funding, and climate change, before watching Trump muse on his divine feminism, and diving a little deeper into Israel's reign of terror on Lebanon. Aaron Kleinman then joins, jumping right into exactly *what* makes this upcoming election such a close fight well beyond the Presidency, looking at electoral shifts left in Midwest Blue Wall states and what Washington's upcoming top-two primary might be able to tell us about these states come November, and tackling whether the Sunbelt's curious rightward shift in 2022 will see a reversal, particularly with the role of abortion on the ballot. After expanding on the States Project's project, how they assess the needs of different candidates and races, and unpacking the major funding gaps in funding for Democratic candidates on the federal and state levels, Kleinman highlights Wisconsin's myriad tight races in the wake of redistricting and wraps up by touching on the potential Mark Robinson effect in North Carolina. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma dive deep into the complete failure of basic journalistic responsibilities that has been the ongoing controversy around Rep. Rashida Tlaib's criticism of the Michigan AG's prosecution of pro-Palestinian protesters, walking through each step of the distortion of Tlaib's genuine critiques by AG Nessel and CNN's Jake Tapper and Dana Bash, and the network's ultimate doubling-down on the story. After parsing through Missouri's pending execution of Marcellus Williams, the MR Team watches Eric Weinstein unpack the Marxism behind some of Kamala Harris' most famous musings, dissect some polling and election previews with John from San Antonio, and discuss the inhumanity of the anti-Haitian hate coming out of the GOP with William in Indiana. Jacob from Indiana helps the show tackle the continuing conflation of anti-semitism and anti-Zionism, and Megyn Kelly watches Dave Rubin stroke his ego as they explore why his getting tied up in dark Russian money was actually a DOJ conspiracy to punish conservative media, plus, your calls and IMs! While we're off this week, we're encouraging everyone to listen to our Stop Book Banning episode, rereleased with new content! This week, we're talking to Maggie Tokuda-Hall, one of the founders of Authors Against Book Bans about the growth of book bans around the country in 2024. Book bans in United States schools and libraries are at their highest since the ALA Office of Intellectual Freedom started collecting data, happening around the country, in every state, and disproportionately affecting books by and about LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC people. What's more, challenges are likely underreported, because librarians who are resisting them are facing unprecedented workplace retribution and in some cases physical danger.Book Bans are on the ballot this year in every state and local election, up and down the ticket. State legislatures, local town councils, county leadership and school boards are being overrun with candidates supported by conservative activists looking to limit access to books and ideas that offer identity, empathy, awareness, and power to young people around the country. We're concerned, so today, we're releasing a special episode of Fated Mates focused on book bans across the country. We interview three experts on what's happening, who is most impacted, and how we can all help. Show notes are extensive, and we hope you'll take a look at them. Wanna win back democracy? Start with the states. The federal government is clearly essential, and to save our nation the Democrats must win the Presidency, House and Senate in '24, but we can't stop there. So many of the terrible laws we're seeing around the country come directly from Republican state legislatures. People like to blame the president when things don't go their way, but so much of what affects our daily lives is decided in state houses. Which is why joining the State's Project is one of the most effective ways to fight back. They've done the preparation. You just gather your people and start stacking up the wins. It's not just effective. It's fun. It's FUN to WIN.  As always, if you find worth in what we do, please consider SUBSCRIBING to PoliticsGirl Premium. Gaslit Nation launched in 2018 to help build the Blue Wave, which set up progressive infrastructure that expands today, including in states like Kansas. In Virginia in 2023, our community produced one of the largest phone banks for Sister District, helping to get out the vote, flipping the Senate, and helping elect Danica Roem, the first transgender person to serve in the state Senate. We also protected abortion rights from Posh Trump Glenn Youngkin. An early September 2023 Gaslit Nation episode highlighted the work of the States Project, which raised more money for Virginia than the Democratic Party. Why? Because grassroots power is the most reliable power we have left. We are the answer to the decades-long mission of the corporate-backed far-right to dismantle our democracy. No one is coming to save us but us. That's why our listeners are the least likely to be demoralized by the news that the Supreme Court will drag out Trump's January 6 insurrection case, the one Merrick Garland's DOJ already waited out the clock on, losing valuable time as the coup plotters like Trump and Bannon continue to mobilize their genocidal far-right army. Ivanka and Jared dine with politicians from both parties and continue to serve as anonymous sources for the media that, in return, tries to rehabilitate their (banana republic grifter) reputations. This week's bonus show, answering questions from our listeners, features a special focus on the murder of Nex Benedict, a gender-fluid trans teen killed by the incitement of hate and violence driven by Chaya Raichik of Libs of TikTok and Oklahoma state school superintendent Ryan Walters, who appointed Raichik to terrorize vulnerable children and their allies. While the grief and anger over the lack of accountability are immense, there are solutions to what we can do, no matter if we live in a Republican-hostage state or a so-called blue state. Other questions from our listeners range from the latest news on the Havana Syndrome mystery and cover-up, must-see places to visit in New York, and whether George Santos will end up on Dancing with the Stars (he will!), and more. If you didn't hear your question answered this week, look out for it next week, as our Q&A continues. Thank you to everyone who supports the show – we could not make Gaslit Nation without you! Control of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives hinges on a special election taking place today in the suburbs of Philadelphia. Democrats currently have a one-seat majority in the chamber. The results of today's race will determine if Democrats can pick up one more seat or if they become tied with Republicans. We're joined by Melissa Walker, head of Giving Circles over at The States Project, to learn more about who's running and what's at stake. It's looking like a whirlwind of a week for Trump and the many battles he faces in court. After an appeals court ruled last week that he did not qualify for immunity from prosecution, Trump and his lawyers appealed to the Supreme Court on Monday and asked them to pause the case. Meanwhile, the hearing to address the allegations that Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis engaged in an improper and unethical relationship with her lead prosecutor will take place on Thursday. And in headlines: Israel's military killed at least 67 Palestinians in Rafah, a new bill that was introduced in Wyoming could take trans kids away from their parents if they receive gender-affirming care, and Uber, Lyft, and DoorDash drivers will walk off the job this Valentine's Day.Show Notes:The State's Project — https://statesproject.org/Vote Save America — https://votesaveamerica.com/Palestine Red Crescent Society — https://www.palestinercs.org/enWhat A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcastFollow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/

(It also inspired the Adam Curtis docuseries by the same name).  The term describes the final years of the Soviet Union when the system was failing, everyone knew the system was rotted from within by greed and corruption, yet people carried on, the broken system becoming the new normal. When our government can easily be shutdown by a Kremlin-backed, proudly fascist party, while its leader continues to call for violence, walking free after having tried to violently overthrow our government, and disinformation echo chambers on the far-right and far-left openly mock and attack the victims and targets of that fascism, America has reached HyperNormalisation. And the priority of the business elite is to protect their immorally low-tax rate and hoard their wealth, following in the footsteps of those who helped bring Hitler and Pinochet to power.  Elon Musk's X has become the biggest outlet of Russian disinformation, according to the EU. That's “mission accomplished” for the American far-right and its Russian backers. Formerly reliable so-called “resistance” accounts on Twitter that once led the way combating Trump and Putin have succumbed to self-censorship and catering to Musk's oppressive algorithms like they're an authoritarian regime. This causes them to fall silent on ringing the alarm on the stakes to all of us for stopping Russia's genocide in Ukraine, LGBTQ+ rights that are being scapegoated through genocidal rhetoric, and more. You know things are bad when even Ralph Nader is ringing the alarm of fascism and wants to campaign for the Democrats!  Since the beginning of the show, the focus has been on grassroots power–the most reliable power we have left. Together, we made 15,000 phone calls to get John Fetterman into the Senate, and he's leading the way against corruption and greed. On this episode, Nancy welcomes back Melissa Walker of the States Project (formerly known as Future Now). Melissa appeared on the very first episode of this podcast, when deep in Covid lockdown, she schooled us on why we should be focusing on winning state races versus focusing on big, expensive federal seats. On this episode, Melissa is back to talk about why state elections matter now more than ever, how tiny margins can create huge policy and power shifts, and why this year's elections in Virginia are of vital importance. Melissa doesn't sugarcoat the fight that lies ahead, but she will give you the inspiration and information you need to be a fierce and focused warrior. Happy Monday! Sam and Emma host Alissa Quart, executive director of the Economic Hardship Reporting Project, to discuss her recent book Bootstrapped: Liberating Ourselves from the American Dream. Then, they're joined by Aaron Kleinman, director of research for the States Project at Future Now, to discuss the Virginia legislative primaries, coming up next Tuesday June 20th. Sam and Emma first run through today's big headlines, parsing through Trump's most recent indictments, and why even his GOP allies are saying he might be done. Alissa Quart then dives right into the ironic origins of the US' “bootstraps” myth of the “self-made man” as terms meant to poke fun at those who believed in this oxymoronic dream, before being embraced by various earnest authors like Emerson and Thoreau – as well as perhaps less earnest ones – who began to reframe these ideas in celebration of rugged individualism (despite their own dependence on community). Expanding on the conversation, Quart then walks through the redefining of these ideas on a political level over the course of the Twentieth Century, from the Presidency of Hoover to the Neoliberal turn under Reagan and Clinton, all serving to reify the defining American myth of meritocracy. After touching on the particular corporatization of this myth in the 21st Century, Alissa, Sam, and Emma wrap up by exploring interpersonal and political avenues to begin busting this myth, and ways to materially begin that shift. Aaron Kleinman then takes on Virginia's impending legislative primaries, and why these elections make or break the politics of a swing state that serves as a lifeline to much of the hard-red South, particularly with the threat of pro-life Democrats. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Bill Barr turn his back on Donald Trump while Kari Lake jumps in line to defend him (and her VP chances), Joe from Ohio discusses accountability for gun control, and Aesop's Foibles discusses political firings and the world of unemployment. The MR Crew also dives into the Trump-DeSantis race as it heats up (very unevenly), and watches Charlie Kirk effortlessly put down women at the TPUSA Young Women's Leadership Summit. Mike from Maryland asks the MR Crew for their takes on some gun laws, plus, your calls and IMs! You only have to look around the country right now to see the power state legislatures have over almost every part of our lives. While the 10th Amendment is a check on the power of the federal government, it gives state leadership an almost infinite amount of power, and in the wrong hands, this unchecked influence has been an absolute disaster for human rights, civil rights and democracy. For 40 years, while Republicans invested billions of dollars and focused energy into building and holding state governing majorities Democrats focused the majority of their attention and money on national races and, while it seemed like things were progressing around the country, individual states were actually putting the pieces in place for regressive laws that would take us back. Aaron Kleinman then joins as he and Sam dive right into the Wisconsin Supreme Court race between Trump alumnus Daniel Kelly and “pro-democracy” Janet Protasiewicz, walking through the stakes – from election shenanigans to reproductive rights – before looking to the electoral nature of the state, with one of the country's worst cases of gerrymandering, and wrapping up the interview exploring the Democrats' success in special elections post-Dobbs, and how that could play out in the additional State Senate race. Peter Shamshiri and Sam then take on the status of Biden's Student Loan relief program, summarizing the argument his administration is bringing in front of the Supreme Court, why said argument is so emergency-specific, and why the justices' questions during oral arguments centered around administrative power. Expanding on this, Sam and Peter discuss the battle between the Chevron and Major Question Doctrines, and why the “standing” of the cases being brought against Student Debt relief is on flimsy ground, before wrapping up the interview by summarizing the Supreme Court's recent cases regarding the constitutionality of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the accountability of tech platforms for what their algorithms promote. And in the Fun Half: Another Daily Wire theocrat (Michael Knowles) preaches about why divine right monarchy is better at limiting power than democracy, Republicans try to pin Norfolk Southern's climate disaster on “diversity” while still refusing to bolster regulations, and Bernie Sanders launches his investigation into Howard Schultz's mass exploitation. Sam hosts Ari Berman, writer at Mother Jones, to discuss his the midterm elections and his recent piece "How Wisconsin Became the GOP's Laboratory for Dismantling Democracy". Then, Sam is joined by Aaron Kleinman, director of research for the States Project at Future Now, to discuss how Democrats did in the midterms at the state level across the country. First, Sam runs through updates on the missiles fired into Poland yesterday, Donald Trump officially launching his 2024 candidacy, federal and state judiciary ongoings, and more, before walking through Mitch McConnell's response to Rick Scott challenging his Senate leadership position. Ari Berman then joins, diving right into the severe shift in Wisconsin politics that followed the election of Scott Walker in 2010, as a Koch-backed Republican trifecta launched their case study for attacking democracy on the state level, going after the core of the swing state's progressive base by undermining unions and voting rights, reforming campaign finance laws, and instituting intense gerrymandering. This brings Ari to parsing through the dichotomy that ensued over the next decade, as Wisconsin's demos continued to vote narrowly between the two parties while the GOP majorities in the state houses continued to grow, best seen in the 2018 midterms where Democrats won 54% of votes statewide, yet Republicans still held 64% of seats. Next, they tackle the future of gerrymandering as the Supreme Court tiptoes closer and closer to undermining the involvement of either independent commissions or state courts in the matter, before wrapping up the interview by walking through the role of governors in fighting back against gerrymandered legislatures (it's getting increasingly difficult) and why this will continue to be a major issue until we get a new Supreme Court. Aaron Kleinman and Sam then parse through the various victories by the Democrats at the state level, including flipping both chambers and achieving a trifecta in Michigan, flipping the Senate and retaining the House in Minnesota, and performing incredibly well (with votes still coming in) in Pennsylvania and New Hampshire, also touching on results from Arizona, Colorado, and Maine. After addressing the upcoming Moore v. Harper case and its likely impact on the power of state legislatures, they wrap up the interview by tackling the importance of the 2024 elections and where the States Project's work is likely going next. And in the Fun Half: Sam and the crew dive into Trump officially announcing his 2024 candidacy, Mitch McConnell coming out victorious in the Senate leadership battle, and Ben Shapiro's response to discussions of codifying same-sex marriage. Then, Emma is joined by Aaron Kleinman, director of research for the States Project at Future Now, to discuss the current projections for the control of state legislatures across the country as the midterm elections approach. Emma first runs through updates on the first week of the new SCOTUS term – likely as they are to uphold Alabama's racial gerrymandering – Trump's request to reverse the circuit 11 rulings opening up his stolen documents to the DOJ, and union-busting efforts by Apple and Amazon before diving deeper into this weekend's Herschel Walker news, as Right-Wing nutjobs come out of the woodworks to defending voting for a hypocrite. Brian Mier then joins as he and Emma get right into contextualizing the results of the first round of the Brazilian presidential election, with Lula's PT workers party actually becoming the first example of an incumbent losing the first round of a presidential election, and likely to keep the steam going with the third and fourth parties rallying behind him, despite the undermining coverage he and his party have gotten from the Right-Wing Brazilian press. Next, they tackle the role of the other parties in the first round of the election, with Ciro Gomes largely funneling his voters to Bolsonaro (despite his party's post-election affiliation to Lula), and why they seemed to be more intent on taking down Lula than Bolsonaro, also touching on the down-ballot success of the workers' party, particularly when it comes to the victories of Afro-Brazilian candidates. Wrapping up they explore the role of voting fraud in the election, and where US-Brazilian relations are likely to go from here. Aaron Kleinman and Emma then give the midterms a heat check as we enter October, exploring how the Dobbs decision bolstered Americans' fears of Right-Wing legislatures, walking through the massive importance of elections in Arizona and Pennsylvania (featuring two of the more heavily anti-democracy legislatures), and emphasizing the importance of on-the-ground organizing in these efforts. They also tackle what to expect in Michigan (and whether the Dems can flip their legislature) and why Maine's incredibly progressive agenda could be challenged by a return of Governor LePage. And in the Fun Half: Emma tackles the pseudo-artsy voyeurism of “Blonde,” Jon calls in to discuss the American coverage of Iran, misinformation, and whom the American left should engage with to learn about this issue. CORRECTION: This event is *this Thursdsay* -- not Friday, as originally posted. Hope to see you Thursday September 1st at 8pm EST for an important fundraiser to help protect Pennsylvania in the midterms and beyond!   Hi All, It's Andrea here, again, issuing a correction: the Pennsylvania fundraiser is this Thursday, not Friday. If you're not doing anything this coming Thursday night -- September 1st at 8pm EST -- join me and other activists for a fundraiser to protect Pennsylvania from Trump's fascist movement by electing Democrats at the all important state level where crucial quality of life policies are determined, including the integrity of our elections. By protecting Pennsylvania this November, we help protect the electoral college in 2024. It's one of the most important states we need to win in order to keep the White House.  As Trump tried to violently overthrow our democracy, he led a well-coordinated operation to leave no stone unturned to try to stay in power, just as we always warned. When all of his many attempts failed, he turned his attention to state races where his cult is running for office, paving the way to steal the election for him or someone like him in 2024, to help Trump and his criminal gang come back to power, enrich themselves, and this time stay in power.  It's all scary and all true. The way we fight back is through efforts like the States Project, which we featured on our show during our spring series Rising Up from the Ashes: Cassandras and Other Experts on Rebuilding Democracy. Here are our two spring interviews with the States Project: Fight Back with The States Project - Part I and Fight Back with The States Project - Part II.  I hope you'll join me this coming Thursday September 1st at 8pm EST over Zoom. The fundraiser is hosted by J. Smith-Cameron who plays Gerri on HBO's Succession, a show based on Rupert Murdoch's corrupt and dysfunctional family, and other stars from the show. What's even better: it's a pajama party. So join me in wearing comfy pajamas, enjoying a chilled drink, and chatting with the stars of Succession. Then, Aaron Kleinman joins to walk through what the States Project is, and how it is working at the state level to secure the individual rights under attack from the rights with a particular focus on its role in securing reproductive rights. Next, Kleinman walks through the biggest statehouse and state senate races across the battleground states, starting with the single-seat that is keeping Arizona under unfettered Republican control, and Maine's role, despite the reemergence of LePage, in leading the way for the most progressive agendas across the country. They also discuss the electoral mapping changes that have pushed back against minoritarian control in Michigan and Pennsylvania (which is especially important in the latter state with the GOP's Theocratic Governor candidate), and explore the possible success in undermining wholesale Republican control in North Carolina and Nebraska, before wrapping up by diving into the action and organizing from the States Project and how we can support THEIR support of grassroots gubernatorial and state-based campaigns. Trita Parsi then joins as they dive into what the JCPOA was, its particular focus on hindering future nuclear developments, how it crumbled under Trump and why nobody else stepped in to prop it up. Expanding on this, they discuss how Biden, despite every campaign promise, has stayed in lockstep with Trump and demanded updated negotiations, before they conclude their interview by clarifying the role and theory behind the Abraham Accords in contrast with the Baghdad Dialogue, and how central Israel's obsession with being THE power of the Middle East has been to halting any progress. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma dive deeper into how the Highland Park shooter got his gun and Darren Bailey, IL GOP nominee for Governor, hosts a campaign rally minutes from the shooting to declare that we must “move on.” Sam addresses his role in preventing you from organizing by forcing you to watch the show instead, Dave Rubin struggles to make Sean Spicer laugh, and Joe Rogan explores his influence in a surprisingly honest manner. The crew reflects on Liz Cheney's denouncement of the “killing fields” that she sees reproductive health clinics as, Owen from LA discusses institutional dysfunction on the left, and Ronald Raygun asks what it would take to get Sam stuck between a rock and a wet place.
