Episode 407: On a quiet street in Kingston, Ontario, a 92-year-old woman named Henrietta Knight opened her front door on a summer afternoon in 1995. She was violently assaulted during a home invasion, left badly injured, and her house was ransacked. Though she survived the attack and spoke to police, paramedics, and doctors, her health steadily declined, and she died months later. What caused her death, and whether it was connected to the assault, would linger as an unanswered question for decades. This episode traces the case from its beginnings in eastern Ontario in the mid-1990s through years of silence and uncertainty, leading to a courtroom many years later, where the truth proved far harder to define than anyone expected. Who's to blame for the Tragic End of Cyrano de Bergerac? This week, The Alarmist (Rebecca Delgado Smith) explores the themes of love, insecurity and deception which ultimately lead to the tragic demise of the famous fictional character Cyrano de Bergerac. She's joined by Fact Checker Chris Smith and Producer Clayton Early. Are Cyrano and Christians lack of self esteem the culprit? Could the idea of perfection in love have something to do with it? Or perhaps everyone's ultimate fear of rejection is to blame. We're all deserving of love. But, we sure do know how to get in our own way.Join our Patreon!Tell us who you think is to blame at http://thealarmistpodcast.comEmail us at thealarmistpodcast@gmail.comFollow us on Instagram @thealarmistpodcastSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/alarmist. John and Chino examine the life and teachings of Hobart Freeman, tracing how a strict faith-healing theology collided with human aging, illness, and reality. Drawing from firsthand experience, recorded sermons, and historical context, the discussion explores how promises of guaranteed healing create cognitive dissonance, enable spiritual abuse, and leave families devastated when those promises fail. ______________________Weaponized Religion: From Christian Identity to the NAR:Paperback: https://www.amazon.com/dp/1735160962 Kindle: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DCGGZX3K ______________________- Support the channel: https://www.patreon.com/branham - Visit the website: https://william-branham.org

In this episode, Marsha recounts a powerful story known as "The Acres of Diamonds," from Matt Cook's book, Beyond Wanting, which illustrates how individuals frequently overlook the treasures that lie within their own lives while searching desperately for fulfillment elsewhere. The tale follows a farmer in 1800s Africa who, driven by the desire to provide for his family, sells his farm in pursuit of diamonds. After years of fruitless searching and ultimately losing everything, he tragically takes his own life. Ironically, the new owner of the farmer's land discovers that it sits atop one of the richest diamond mines in history, highlighting the notion that what we seek is often right in front of us. Welcome back to Barn Talk, where what happens at the barn doesn't always stay in the barn. Today's episode is a somber one, as Tork and Sawyer come together to reflect on the shocking assassination of Charlie Kirk in Utah. With heavy hearts, the hosts share their thoughts and prayers for Charlie's family and friends, acknowledging the deep impact of his loss on the country, especially among the younger generation. After a brief market update, Tork and Sawyer dive into a candid conversation about the repercussions of political violence, the dangerous state of public discourse, and the significance of free speech in America. They discuss Charlie Kirk's influence—as a thought leader who challenged the status quo and encouraged critical thinking among young people—and examine how his untimely death exposes deeper issues within our society. The hosts also touch on the reaction to Charlie's death, the dangers of losing healthy debate, and the importance of standing up for what you believe in, even in the face of adversity. Amidst all the turmoil, they find hope in the legacy that Charlie leaves behind: a reminder for all of us to build strong communities, seek truth, and never shy away from difficult conversations.Pour yourself a cup of coffee—or a glass of whiskey, as the guys do in honor of Charlie—and join us for this heartfelt and unfiltered episode of Barn Talk.Shop Farmer Grade
What happens when one of England's earliest reformers loses his nerve—yet dies for it anyway? On this day in Tudor history, 19th August 1531, Thomas Bilney, priest and preacher from Norfolk, was burned at the stake in Norwich's infamous Lollards' Pit. Bilney had once been a fiery voice for reform—distributing William Tyndale's books, preaching against saints and pilgrimages, and even inspiring future martyrs like Hugh Latimer. But under pressure, he broke. He recanted. He regretted it. And in the end… he couldn't live with his denial. In this video, I'll explore Bilney's: - Early life and Cambridge career - Spiritual awakening through Erasmus's New Testament - Fiery preaching and arrest under Cardinal Wolsey - His fateful abjuration—and why he couldn't bear it - Final arrest, trial, and burning at Norwich - His legacy as the “martyr who took it back” Thomas Bilney may not be as famous as Tyndale or Cranmer, but his story reveals the messy, human side of the English Reformation—doubt, conviction, fear, and courage. Had you heard of Thomas Bilney before today? Let me know your thoughts in the comments. Join us as we explore the captivating history of Beaver Island, a unique gem in Lake Michigan, especially its ties to the enigmatic figure of James Strang and his Mormon community. https://youtu.be/PC9lq1Z1sGY Don't miss our other conversations about Strangism: https://gospeltangents.com/denominations/strangites/ Copyright © 2025 Gospel Tangents All Rights Reserved Except for book reviews, no content may be reproduced without written permission. 3 Mormon Print Shop Arrival and Reign of King Strang James Strang, a self-proclaimed prophet, settled on Beaver Island around 1848, having arrived in 1847. He led a group of Mormon dissenters who broke away from Brigham Young's leadership and settled on the island in 1846. By 1850, Strang was declared King of his community, which constituted the majority of the island's population. The main hub of the island is even named St. James, after him. Strang's influence extended to societal norms, where he apparently mandated that women wear bloomers or pants to prevent pneumonia, with husbands being whipped if their wives didn't comply. He also reportedly told non-Mormons (like the Irish settlers and original Ottawa/Ojibwe inhabitants) that they needed to convert, leave, or pay a tax. The Mormon Print Shop A pivotal location in Strang's community was the Old Mormon Printing House, erected in 1850 by Strang and his followers2. This building was significant as it published the Northern Islander, which was the first daily newspaper north of Grand Rapids. During the 1850s, Strang's group published religious works and two newspapers: the Northern Islander and the Daily Northern Islander. After Strang's assassination, the print shop was ransacked and later became a boarding house. Today, it stands as a museum and serves as the headquarters for the Beaver Island Historical Society. Tragic End of King Strang The growing friction within Beaver Island's Mormon community reached a violent climax in 1856. James Jesse Strang was fatally shot and clubbed by two of his disgruntled followers while walking towards the dock to meet the captain of the USS Michigan. These assassins were reportedly hiding behind a woodpile near the Johnson McCulla store. It's notable that two of the assassins were husbands who had been whipped under Strang's controversial bloomers policy. Strang died from his wounds 23 days later. The assassins were taken to Mackinaw Island by the USS Michigan's captain, who refused to allow the Mormon police to arrest them. They were soon released by the Mackinaw sheriff, celebrated by Strang's enemies, and astonishingly, each was fined only 50 cents, though the exact charge is unknown. The Aftermath and Island Life In the wake of Strang's assassination, an angry mob from the mainland stormed Beaver Island, destroying buildings and forcing the Mormons to flee. Beaver Island is the only island in Lake Michigan inhabited year-round, with a population of 500 to 800 people that swells to 3,000 in the summer. The island has a strong Irish presence, with many historical inhabitants speaking Gaelic and even naming a local bay "Donegal Bay" after a place in Ireland. Historically, the island's primary industries were lumber and fishing. Overfishing, particularly using a now-outlawed net fishing method, led to severe depletion, prompting Michigan and other states to ban the practice. Today, tourism is the main industry. The island didn't even get electricity until around 1939. Beaver Island Townships Cemetery Visitors can also explore the Beaver Island Townships Cemetery, one of two cemeteries on the island (the other being a Catholic cemetery). The oldest grave dates back to 1853, within James Strang's era. An interesting feature of the cemetery is the presence of posts marking older graves where the original wooden crosses have long since deteriorated, indicating a body is buried there even if the identity is unknown. The second oldest grave, dated July 27, 1859,

Send us a textThe enduring legend of Belle Starr, America's notorious "Bandit Queen," culminates in this riveting final episode that traces her tragic demise and extraordinary posthumous transformation. After the death of her husband Sam Starr in 1886, Belle found herself in a desperate legal battle to keep her beloved home at Younger's Bend. The Cherokee Tribal Council delivered devastating news – as a non-citizen, her claim to the land had vanished with her husband's passing. Demonstrating remarkable resilience, she quickly formed a strategic alliance with Jim July, a young man of Creek and Cherokee heritage, securing her homestead through this new marriage while agreeing to stop harboring fugitives.Despite her attempts to reform, the shadows of Belle's past continued to circle. By February 1889, she had accumulated a long list of potential enemies – from her disgruntled neighbor Edgar Watson to her own resentful son Ed Reed. On February 3rd, just days before her 41st birthday, Belle was ambushed on a lonely stretch of road near Eufaula. The attack was brutal and cowardly – shot in the back with what many believe was her own double-barreled shotgun, then finished off as she lay wounded on the cold ground. Though she was found still alive and brought home to her daughter Pearl, her injuries proved fatal. The investigation into Belle's murder exemplifies frontier justice at its most ineffective. Despite compelling evidence against prime suspect Edgar Watson, including distinctive footprints at the crime scene, he was acquitted due to insufficient evidence and reluctant witnesses. The mystery of who killed Belle Starr remains unsolved to this day, adding another layer to her fascinating legend. It was her violent death that catapulted her from local notoriety to national fame, as sensationalized newspaper accounts caught the attention of publisher Richard K. Fox. His 1889 paperback "Belle Starr, the Bandit Queen" reinvented her as a beautiful, educated Southern belle driven to crime to avenge her Confederate brother's death – a romantic fabrication far removed from the complex reality of the woman who had just one conviction for horse theft.Belle's grave at Younger's Bend bears the poetic inscription: "Shed not for her the bitter tear... 'Tis but the casket that lies here, the gem that fills it, sparkles yet." These words perfectly capture the essence of the Belle Starr phenomenon – the transformation of a frontier woman into an enduring symbol of the Wild West. Welcome to The Daily, where we go through the Bible verse by verse, chapter by chapter, every single day. We are taking a short break from Ecclesiastes this week to celebrate Easter with some special devotionals aimed at preparing our hearts for this week in history. Our text today is Matthew 26:14-15 Then one of the twelve, whose name was Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, “What will you give me if I deliver him over to you?” And they paid him thirty pieces of silver. — Matthew 26:14-15 The Price of a Savior Thirty pieces of silver. That was the cost of betraying the Son of God. The price of a slave. The value Judas placed on Jesus. Judas had walked with Jesus for three years. He had seen miracles, heard the teachings, and even broken bread with Him. Yet in the end, he sold the Savior for pocket change. It's easy to condemn Judas. But before we do, we must ask ourselves—have we ever traded Jesus for less? When we compromise faith for comfort, are we not betraying Him? When we choose sin over obedience, do we not exchange Him for temporary gain? When we remain silent when we should stand for truth, do we not sell Him out to avoid rejection? Betrayal isn't just Judas' story—it's ours too. A Heart That Sells Out Judas didn't betray Jesus in a moment. His heart had been drifting long before that night. In John 12:6, we learn that Judas had been stealing from the disciples' money bag. His love for money had been growing in secret, and eventually, it overpowered his love for Christ. Betrayal always begins in the heart. It starts small—unconfessed sin, divided loyalty, a love for the world. Then one day, the moment comes when we must choose between Jesus and something else. Judas chose silver. What about us? What are the “thirty pieces of silver” that tempt you? Success? Approval? Comfort? Hidden sin? If we're not careful, we will trade what is eternal for what is temporary—just like Judas. The Tragic End of Betrayal Judas thought silver would satisfy him. But sin never delivers what it promises. When he realized the weight of his betrayal, he tried to undo it (Matthew 27:3-5). But guilt without repentance leads to despair. Instead of running to Jesus for mercy, Judas ran to the grave. Yet contrast this with Peter, who also betrayed Jesus that same night. Peter denied Jesus three times—but instead of running from Christ, he ran back to Him. And Jesus restored him. The difference? Judas regretted his sin. Peter repented of it. The good news? No betrayal is too great for Jesus to forgive. If we bring our failures to Him, we don't have to end like Judas. Instead, we can be restored like Peter. Where Is My Loyalty? Judas shows us that proximity to Jesus doesn't equal faithfulness. You can be near Christ and still betray Him. Faithfulness isn't about knowing Jesus' words—it's about treasuring Him above all else. So today, ask yourself: What competes for my loyalty to Christ? Where do I need to confess and turn back before small compromises become full betrayals? Am I running from Jesus in guilt or to Jesus in repentance? If you've felt the weight of compromise, the pull of temptation, or the sting of regret—know this: Jesus is still calling you back. Judas walked away. Peter ran back. You have the same choice today. No matter how far you've drifted, His grace is greater. His arms are open. His mercy is new. Will you come back to Him? Take a moment now—confess, surrender, and turn to the One who gave everything for you. #Easter #Forgiven #RunToJesus ASK THIS: What are the “thirty pieces of silver” in my life that tempt me to compromise my faith? Have I ever traded Jesus for comfort, approval, or hidden sin? When I fail, do I run away in guilt or back to Jesus in repentance? What steps can I take today to ensure my heart stays faithful to Christ? DO THIS: Take a moment to reflect on any area where you have compromised your faith, confess it to Jesus, and choose to run back to Him today. PRAY THIS: Lord, reveal any area where my heart has drifted from You, and give me the strength to turn back in repentance. Thank You for Your mercy that never runs out and for calling me back to You. Amen. PLAY THIS: Truth Be Told.

This morning in Gaza, in a ceremony that was even more twisted than those that came before it, Hamas paraded four coffins, containing the dead bodies of four hostages who were killed in captivity, before handing them over to the Red Cross. Israel then received the remains of Oded Lifshitz, an 83-year-old peace activist abducted from his home in Kibbutz Nir Oz; and the bodies of the iconic young mother Shiri Bibas, and her boys, Kfir and Ariel, who were respectively 9 months old and 4 years old at the time of their abduction, also from Nir Oz, which lost a quarter of its residents on October 7, 2023. Shiri, Kfir and Ariel came to symbolize Hamas's brutality and the helplessness of the victims of October 7. Oded was also a symbol of the many men and women who had dedicated their lives to seeking peace with the Palestinians, and whose lives were brutally ended by Palestinians on that darkest of days. In a year of somber days, today is one of the more difficult ones we have experienced - here at Call Me Back, and as a nation. We are joined today to process this wrenching moment by a Call Me Back favorite: Matti Friedman, to help us understand what this day means for Israel, and how it will change us and the stories we tell ourselves about Israel and our hopes for peace. Matt Friedman is an award-winning journalist and author of four books. He is based in Jerusalem, and writes a column for The Free Press. Mike Lynch, a man who faced down the giant of US Justice, out maneuvered the legal behemoths, took on the law and emerged victorious—only to be taken by the cold, capricious hand of Mother Nature. Imagine it: overcoming insurmountable odds, the weight of the world against you, and yet, you rise. Then, in a cruel twist, you're snuffed out by the very seas that should've carried you home on a joyous victory lap of vindication. And the loss of his number two, also acquitted by the US courts, on the very same day? That smacks of something truly out of whack—a malevolent force, a Keyser Söze-like figure, flexing its vindictive contempt. The unruly seas didn't just take six lives; they dragged HP's corporate secrets to the seabed, locked away in the depths, perhaps forever. Was it mere misfortune, or was there something more sinister at play? Watch this video, and together we'll explore what might just be the greatest unfinished story of the 21st century. The seas may have claimed their due, but the truth is still out there, waiting to surface. R.I.P.
