Nothing brings me greater joy than when a deep exploration into the artistry of a favorite singer yields even more delights than I could have possibly imagined. And when I have a personal friendship with that singer, my cup truly runneth over. A week ago the music world once again celebrated the birthday of the treasurable soprano Roberta Alexander. Today, in a belated birthday tribute, I offer recordings of Roberta singing the music of composers of The Netherlands, where she has made her adoptive home since the mid-1970s. As befits Roberta Alexander's eclecticism, the range of musical styles is wide, ranging from the baroque oratorio Joseph, by Willem de Fesch, to the romanticism of early 20th-century composers Hendrik Andriessen, Alphons Diepenbrock, and Julius Röntgen, to the more astringent (yet still lush and colorful) idiom of Robert Heppener and Willem Frederik Bon. Prepare yourself to be swept away by these magnificent works in brilliant performances recorded between 1979 and 2000 in which Roberta Alexander is joined by fellow singers Claron McFadden and Nico van der Meel, and accompanied by Bernard Haitink, Rudolf Jansen, David Porcelijn, Ed Spanjaard, and Jed Wentz. If you are thinking of passing this episode by because of the obscure repertoire, I encourage you to take a chance, not only because these recordings present Alexander in all her glory, but because you will get to hear fascinating music by composers you might not have heard before, ranging from a dramatic Baroque seduction scene between Joseph and Potiphar's wife, to an erotically-charged setting of Verlaine, to exquisite settings of meditative texts for the Lenten season. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. The link will also take you to Countermelody's Patreon page, where you can pledge your monthly or yearly support at whatever level you can afford.

Wo sagt man Määl, wo Meel? What is driving the recent conflict on college campuses? One obvious factor is reaction to the Israel-Hamas War.But my guest this week isn't sure it's quite that simple. As CEO of the non-profit, BridgeUSA, 25 year-old Manu Meel is in constant contact with students on more than 70 campuses across the country. The organization helps facilitate conversations among college and high school students with idealogical differences. In the days and weeks following the October 7th massacre of Israelis by Hamas, Bridge USA heard plenty from its student members.“There was a lot of pain, there was a lot of confusion as to what to do on campus,” says Manu. “And then as the news cycle started going and as what I call the elite Twitter crowd went to play, and as people started to essentially lose sight of what had happened and focus on what's the broader implication, what's my tribe going to say and how do I make the most of this moment — I think then you saw that trickle down into campuses. “Tribal Politics on Campus Political protest on campus is nothing new. But America's tribal politics have reached a fever pitch, finding a fertile home where the freedom to explore and express, typically a welcome right of passage, is now emblazoned with an asterisk.*Speak your mind at the risk of being demonized by “the other”.*Explore divergent points of view at the risk of angering your tribe.*Express your opinion at the risk of being cancelled, or worse..Glimmer of HopeIt's no surprise that the tension on college campuses is a microcosm of the tension in America. But there is a glimmer of hope, Manu assures us, and it's on these very college campuses. It's just that we don't often hear about it in the media. You'll hear about it now as Manu helps unpack the nuances of this complex topic. This remarkable young leader kicks off the 6th year of Our Voices Matter, sharing thoughtful insight on the generation tasked with leading us into the future. One that will hopefully remind us how to have civil, constructive conversations with those who look and think differently than we do.A future where we celebrate and embrace our common humanity rather than blind allegiance to our tribes.www.ourvoicesmatterpodcast.comwww.lorellemedia.comThis podcast is devoted to empowering us all to better understand each other's differences...one story at a time. Emmy Award-winning journalist, Linda Lorelle, guides guests through insightful, unexpected conversations that reveal our common humanity. Affective polarization in America – the gap between voters' positive feelings about their own political party or "side" and negative feelings toward the opposing party – has sharply increased during the past two decades. We speak with two leaders in local government and a nationwide students group about effective ways to bridge divides. Erica Manuel is CEO and Executive Director at the Institute for Local Government in Roseville, California. She has over 20 years of experience helping public, private and nonprofit organizations implement innovative policies to provide strong leadership, advance climate resilience, support economic development, engage communities, and drive positive change.Manu Meel is CEO of BridgeUSA, a student-led nonprofit organization that creates spaces at colleges and high schools for open discussion among students about political issues. BridgeUSA began in 2016 at the universities of Notre Dame, CU-Boulder and UC Berkeley in response to growing polarization on campus. Erica and Manu were interviewed by our co-host Richard Davies at the 2023 Braver Angels Convention in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Both of them played leading roles at the cross-partisan gathering of Democrats, Republicans and independent citizens. Braver Angels is part of the growing movement of bridging organizations, who are finding new ways to push back against rigid and dehumanizing political divides. Many young people on college campuses are "just scared to say what's on their minds, and walking on eggshells," Manu tells us. He blames "the loudest voices" for silencing open discussion. "This is not a problem of the majority," he says. "It is a problem of the loudest voices imposing their closed-mindedness on an exhausted majority."Both Erica and Manu insist they're hopeful that the crisis of polarization can be successfully overcome. "I'm hopeful because not a single person I've talked to has said why on earth would you do that? Why on earth would you talk to someone on the other side? Why on earth would you want to treat someone like a human being with dignity?" Erica tells Richard.Recommendation: Jim recommends Commentary Magazine, a monthly publication of conservative "non-Trumpy" opinion. On this episode of Cylinder Radio, I speak with Manu Meel, the CEO of BridgeUSA, a youth-led non-profit organization that creates spaces on college and high school campuses for open-minded and non-judgemental conversations on political issues. I think it's a really important challenge to take on and BridgeUSA is doing an awesome job at tackling it so I wanted to have him on the podcast to learn more and share his work with my platform. During our conversation, we talk about how BridgeUSA started, why Manu felt called to insert himself into the culture wars and why he thinks he was able to “resist” the temptation of going after material success and external rewards over meaning. We also discuss how to get young people to break out of their thought bubbles and if echo chambers are part of human nature or not. Lastly, we talk about what makes people actually take action to change something within our society and what you can do to start your own BridgeUSA chapter if you are at a high school or college in the US. — LEARN MORE ABOUT MANU AND BRIDGEUSA — Manu's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/manumeel_/ BridgeUSA: https://www.bridgeusa.org/ Start Your Own Chapter: https://www.bridgeusa.org/start-a-chapter/ Bridge USA Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BridgeUSA1 BridgeUSA Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bridgeusa_/ — LISTEN TO CYLINDER RADIO — Podcast: https://cylinderradio.libsyn.com/ Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/cylinder-radio/id1448662116 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/3ACgZ7hMoBuuC1cmc9oLoP — CHECK OUT MY FREEBIES — Debate To Dialogue: https://www.williamreusch.com/debatetodialogue The Social Solution: https://www.williamreusch.com/socialsolution Free Critical Thinking Curriculum: https://www.williamreusch.com/criticalthinking — SUPPORT MY WORK — My Website: https://www.williamreusch.com Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/willreusch Instagram: https://instagram.com/willreusch

It is infinitely clear that more young people are getting involved in politics. According to Tufts University, three times as many 18- to 24-year-olds donated to a political campaign or registered others to vote in 2020 than in 2018. It is also equally clear that as political debate in the United States has intensified, classroom debates have also become increasingly heated. How have recent elections and increased interest affected political discourse among younger demographics? Why do some students get involved, while others are not civically engaged? And how does political dialogue in schools fit into the broader conversation around democracy? In this episode, Kevin discusses civic engagement among the next generation of leaders with the CEO of BridgeUSA, Manu Meel.
