Het kabinet erkent dat de landbouw- en visserijsectoren te maken hebben met een opeenstapeling van regelgeving en wil de tegenstelling tussen voedselproductie en biodiversiteit verminderen. Dus kondigde men op Prinsjesdag een mestcrisis aanpak aan met de focus op uitstoot in plaats van neerslag én de stimulering van innovatie. Maar werd ook gemeld dat het verlaagde Btw-tarief van 9% op agrarische producten en diensten vanaf 2025 wordt afgeschaft, waardoor een algemeen tarief van 21% van toepassing wordt. Vandaag het gesprek met Carolien Nijhuis. Carolien is Managing Owner van de Nijhuis Group. In 14 jaar tijd is het bedrijf van een eenmanszaak uitgegroeid tot een volwaardig maakbedrijf in Winterswijk met een team van 30 vakmensen. Wij maken allerlei producten van natuurrubber en metalen veelal bestemd voor de voedingsmiddelenindustrie. Denk aan machinebouw en onderdelen van machines. Laten we beginnen… In gesprek met Carolien leerde ik: Je kan maar beter heel groot worden in een niche. De producten van Nijhuis gaan de hele wereld over. Ik zit rijke mensen rijker te maken, en aan de andere kant konden haar ouders wel wat hulp gebruiken. Je moet het niet in je hoofd hebben, maar het moet in je bedrijf zitten. Iedereen moet vervangbaar zijn. De stip op de horizon is vooral handig bij tegenslagen. Niet druk maken over de dingen die je niet in de hand hebt. Als ondernemer krijg je niet vaak complimenten. Als je wil groeien moet je als ondernemer los kunnen laten. Geen control freak zijn, maar wel in control zijn. Als je met Carolien werkt moet je je realiseren dat het altijd in beweging is. Continu leren staat in de kernwaarden van de Nijhuis Groep, naast open, eerlijk en respectvol met elkaar communiceren op basis van vertrouwen zodat mensen de autonomie pakken. "Stel je eens voor dat we hetzelfde belang hebben.", zegt Carolien tegen de medewerkers. De MT vergaderingen gaan niet zozeer over cijfers, maar vooral over de mensen. De lastigste uitdaging van Carolien, de wereld is zo mooi maar waarom ziet niet iedereen dat. De angst voor elkaar wegnemen met PPA analyses - gebaseerd op DISC. Het is belangrijk dat je tijd steekt in de ontwikkeling van je mensen als je wilt dat er een team staat dat wat voor elkaar over heeft. Diverse teams functioneren beter. Zelfreflectie is de belangrijkste kwaliteit die mensen kunnen ontwikkelen, net als eerlijk naar jezelf kunnen kijken zodat je dichter bij je gevoel kunt komen. Naar jezelf toe wat liever zijn en het leuk vinden om op ontdekkingstocht te gaan om aan jezelf te werken. Net als een tekort aan vakmensen, hebben we ook een tekort aan ondernemers die een bedrijf willen overnemen van de generatie die klaarstaat om met pensioen te gaan. Carolien besteed niet specifiek aandacht aan de SDGs, dat is gewoon wat we doen. Het is niet een doel op zich. De excel-cultuur van winstmaximalisatie, werkt niet. Zoals bijvoorbeeld dat het niet past om een school te ondersteunen op dat moment, want anders worden de targets niet gehaald. Als je meer kijkt als een familiebedrijf, meer op de lange termijn, dan is het niet erg dat je een jaar geen marge hebt gedraaid. Als je meer naar waardemaximalisatie kijkt, dan gaan je heel anders om met dit soort vraagstukken. Dan kun je op de langere termijn gezonder groeien en gezondere basis creëren. Dames, hou op met sorry zeggen. Doen mannen ook niet. Hoe blijf je als vrouw staan in een mannenwereld, en hoe blijf je vrouw. Het mag meer slagkracht krijgen door dingen te gaan doen. Begin niet te groot, maar begin. We started talking about Michelle's commitment to avoid scrolling on vacation. She did. SAUR multiplied its industrial revenue by twenty in three years. Two of the three largest water companies in the World are french: Veolia and Suez. So, for SAUR being the "French 3rd guy" is like being a small fish in a shark tank. In that context, where making a dent is pretty challenging, SAUR had to differentiate.  Hence, since starting up in 1933, SAUR had always bet on municipal water. And that's why they build and operate mostly municipal water and wastewater treatment plants across 20 countries.  Yet, with water scarcity on the rise, the industrial segment is the fastest growing piece of the water sector's cake.  So how do you react when you apparently bet on the wrong horse?   Well, in 2018, the Swedish investment fund EQT acquired SAUR with a plan. In five years, they would transform the company to surf the industrial wave! They warmed up in 2020 by buying Unidro and Econvert, before their main move with the acquisition of Nijhuis, which would become their industrial flagship.  Many more moves followed with the acquisition of Veolia's mobile fleet, of Flootech, Aqua-Chem, Sodai, Biosys Group, PWNT, and Nortech.  And this is how SAUR multiplied its industrial revenue by twenty in three years.     Wanna dive deeper into the topic? Where was Michelle Nijhuis all my life?She lived off the electric grid for fifteen years and I was about two months in, so we shared stories of the experiences. She did it much longer and her fiance had to assemble everything from scratch. I'm only two months in and can use off-the-shelf parts, but I'm in Manhattan, so can't set up a permanent system. Some similarities: connecting with nature, learning to respect power, living with less resulting in living more. Michelle shares her challenges of connecting with the human world when disconnected to a power grid, but I don't think you'll hear regret.I have to correct myself: I said kilowatt-hour when I meant watt-hour. My battery isn't 1,000 times bigger than I said.It's hard to put into words the benefits of living without electrical power at the touch of a button. I recommend turning off your power every now and then. Ninian Nijhuis holds a Research Master in Religious Studies (University of Amsterdam); a BA in Law and an LL.M. in International Public Law (University of Utrecht). Her main focus is on Western Esotericism and her key fields of interest are Jungian psychology, sidereal astrology, mysticism, spirituality and its connections to science. It's within you, it's within me.” “In motherhood, it's important to develop a lot of soul qualities to be the mother you want to be, to give our children the support they need so they can grow up as their sovereign self. We have to give [our children] love, safety, protection and also honor their sovereign so they can be themselves.” “I discovered that everything in creating a business - creating your project, creating your art, your writing, it's all a relationship. Your business has its own soul so you can be in a relationship with your business.” “We are nature. And we are part of the ecology we live in.” “I don't believe we need to punish our children. we have to be good listeners to our children, to our body, to our soul.” “I want to work from my overflow. […] I don't want to give everything to everyone.” “We don't have to do it all ourselves. Support is really important to do our work. And I call it radical because we are not used to it. We are used to running and running, productivity, and being there for whatever. But it's so exhausting. We have to change this as mothers, for our daughters. It's not sustainable. We cannot do this anymore.” “Really listen to your body. What does your body need? What is your body feeling? What are your thoughts? And make that a daily practice.” “You have 5 minutes to take care of yourself. You have two hours to go outside. But you have to put it in your agenda. And it is part of taking care of others.” “Carve out the time for self-care because we have the time.” “Take care of your relationship with your inner selves. One of David’s favorite books last year was Michelle Nijhuis’ Beloved Beasts: Fighting for Life in an Age of Extinction, a fascinating history of the way human knowledge about species extinction (and survival) has evolved. There was a time, she writes, that scientists (and human culture at-large) simply didn’t understand the way animals lived and died. Most people figured that even creatures that seemed to be getting scared with find a way to come back. But then in the twentieth century things changed, and this book is the story of people like Rachel Carson, Aldo Leopold, and other scientists set out to learn the truth and preserve the creature that make the planet so wonderful. It’s a great book, and in this episode of Bibliography, Nijhuis came on to chat about the books that have inspired her—as an individual, as a scholar, and as a parent—over the years.
