In this special episode of Object Matters, hear a live recording of a public event held in March 2023, when visual artist Mikala Dwyer is interviewed by Toni Ross about the Chau Chak Wing Museum's fourth contemporary art project titled Mikala Dwyer: Penelope and the Seahorse.  The exhibition at the Chau Chak Wing Museum is an aquatic-themed installation bristling with allusions to hippocampus, the genus name of the seahorse, derived from the Ancient Greek meaning ‘horse' and ‘sea monster'. In a wide ranging discussion they cover Mikala's practices, memory associations, the endangered status of seahorses, how she engaged with museum collection items including seahorse specimens (for example MHF.266) and ancient Greek vases depicting maritime mythology (for example NM98.41 and NMR.1021.1 both of which are in the exhibition), and how the name hippocampi was used for a structure within the brain that is shaped like a seahorse. Humans and other mammals have two hippocampi, one in each of the temporal lobes. We are always with seahorses. Guest: Mikala Dwyer was born in Sydney in 1959 and now lectures at RMIT in Melbourne. Mikala Dwyer has exhibited widely in Australia and internationally since the 1980s and is known for her distinctive experiments in sculpture, installation, and performance art.  Her practice is predominantly installation-based, in which she constructs idiosyncratic, personal spaces within the conventional architecture of the gallery, using materials that have a strong association with the body. Mikala is interviewed by curator Dr Toni Ross, Honorary Senior Lecturer (Art Theory), Faculty of Arts, Design and Architecture, UNSW. Host: Dr Craig Barker, Head of Public Engagement, Chau Chak Wing Museum and Director, Paphos Theatre Archaeological Excavations. Follow @DrCraig_B on Twitter and Instagram. Exhibition details: Mikala Dwyer: Penelope and the Seahorse (until October 2023)

The most powerful forces that can be generated by the human body are initiated, controlled, and dominated by the hip. Unfortunately, in the majority of trainees, some degree of hip dysfunction creates postures and mechanics that reduce power and stability and are generally unsound. The faulty mechanics arise from inadequate training and insufficient practice of critical hip movements. We've named this widespread fault “muted hip function” or “MHF.”

Brand Position: She specializes in sunset beach family portrait sessions for tourists. The Gear Bag: Canon 5D Mark III, Sigma 35 mm Magic Hour Foundation: "I have been beyond blessed to have this talent, let alone make a business out of it that supports my family. And I felt like aside from the pro bono work I do on my own, it needed to be taken to a larger scale. That's when I found the Magic Hour Foundation, which offers free photo services (and adorable keepsakes) for families battling terminal cancer, or survivors. I met my first family in 2016 and it was honestly one the most rewarding and difficult things I've ever done. Charlie was suffering from terminal brain cancer that was quite a battle for about 7 years. He ran marathons, has a wife and 2 teenage daughters and fought so hard. They decided to take a final vacation to Panama City Beach to bring Charlie to the beach and try to relax as a family. That's when I met them. We went out to the beach at sunset for about 45 minutes and just talked, laughed, played, all while capturing their last moments together as a family. The way he looked at those girls was something they needed documented forever. I sobbed the entire walk back to my car and home, but had never felt so "accomplished" as a photographer, if that makes sense. You forget sometimes that you are creating their legacy. These pictures are not only for them right now, but for generations to come." The Magic Hour Foundation Process: 1. You’ll receive a call from the Magic Hour Foundation, who provides you with the name, number, email, and status of a person in need of the service. 2. You’ll contact the family and set up an appointment and determine any special requests for the session. 3. Run through a session just like you would a normal session, but keep in mind the sensitivity and importance of these pictures. 4. Gender Equality in the NHS Part Two: Men

In the second of this series of episodes covering the recent NHS Northwest Gender Equality conferences it is the turn of the Men... Peter Baker is the Chief Executive of the Men's Health Forum -- a charity which works to improve male health in England and Wales. His presentation to us in Preston was every bit as challenging as the women's message featured in the previous episode, though markedly different. It was research by MHF that first highlighted how many NHS gender equality schemes in England appeared to have very little disaggregated evidential data, were focussed on processes rather than outcomes, or were lacking in effective consultation and involvement with service users. Many speakers stressed that equality in this context does not mean providing the same service to everyone. That's not what the law requires, and stark differences in priorities were very clear in the different messages from the men and women presenters seeking the same equality of health outcomes. Peter's presentation highlights a set of key areas where he says targetted action could be brought to bear on specific health inequalities for men; he also demonstrates how novel approaches can be used to get essential messages across to the men themselves. Click here if you would like to view and follow a handout of Peter's slides whilst listening.
