What role can annuities play in retirement planning, and how do you know if they may be worth considering? In this episode, we break down the pros, cons and complexities of annuities in a practical, easy-to-understand way. From income features and potential downside protection to fees, surrender charges and liquidity concerns, you'll learn why annuities may be a helpful tool for some retirees, but not the right fit for others. The episode explores different types of annuities, including variable annuities, fixed indexed annuities and income-focused strategies that may help create a personal pension-style income stream in retirement. You'll also hear why some retirees value annuities for the added predictability they may provide, especially during market volatility or for those concerned about outliving their money. Most importantly, this discussion emphasizes that a product should never replace a comprehensive retirement plan. Whether you already own an annuity or are considering one for the first time, this episode offers educational insight to help you better understand whether an annuity may fit into your retirement strategy.--
What does it take to build a retirement plan designed to support you for 20, 30 or even 40 years? In this episode, Loren Merkle, Molly Nelson and Haley Gutschenritter explain why owning IRAs, 401(k)s, annuities and savings accounts does not automatically create a retirement strategy. Using the analogy of construction blueprints versus tools, they explain how a written retirement plan can help coordinate income, taxes, inflation, health care and long-term financial decisions into one cohesive plan built for the realities of retirement. The episode dives into how inflation can quietly erode purchasing power over time, why taxes may become one of the key challenges to long-term retirement wealth, how the bucket strategy can help balance short-term income needs with long-term growth and how recent tax law changes, including the senior bonus deduction, may affect planning decisions.Whether you're nearing retirement or already retired, this episode offers practical insights into building a retirement blueprint designed to help support income needs while adapting to inflation, taxes, market volatility and the unexpected challenges that can come with a long retirement.--Loren Merkle, CFP®, RICP®, Certified Financial Fiduciary®https://merkleretirementplanning.com/staff-members/loren-merkle/Haley Gutschenritter, CFP®https://merkleretirementplanning.com/staff-members/haley-gutschenritter/Molly Nelson, Host of Retiring Today with Loren Merklehttps://merkleretirementplanning.com/staff-members/molly-nelson/--This video does not constitute an offer to sell, a solicitation of an offer to buy, or a recommendation of any security or any other product or service by Merkle Retirement Planning LLC, Elite Retirement Planning LLC, MRP Insurance LLC, or any other third party regardless of whether such security, product or service is referenced in this episode. Retirement planning can feel clear on paper until market swings, taxes, inflation, and longevity enter the picture. What if the real issue isn't picking the right product, but knowing which problem you're trying to solve first? In this episode, Iván Watanabe and Evan Wohl talk with Neal Brincefield, RICP, CLU, ChFC, CExP, Financial Advisor at Consolidated Planning, about Monte Carlo analysis, sequence of returns risk, and retirement income design. Neal explains why simulations should be used as stress tests, not crystal balls, and how a balanced strategy can help reduce pressure on a portfolio. Key takeaways: Why Monte Carlo analysis can create confidence, but shouldn't be treated as a crystal ball How the order of investment returns can reshape retirement income planning outcomes Why structural income planning can be more useful than chasing higher portfolio returns How lifetime income and liquid assets can help reduce pressure during market declines Why defining the planning problem first can make product decisions feel less stressful And more! Even if you already have an estate plan in place, there's a good chance it may not work the way you think. In this episode, Loren Merkle, Molly Nelson, and guest attorney Charlie Bottenberg of Brick Gentry P.C. discuss how estate planning has evolved — and why outdated documents, old trust language, and overlooked beneficiary designations could create unintended tax consequences, probate issues, or family complications. They explain why estate taxes are no longer the primary concern for most families, how the SECURE Act changed inherited retirement accounts, and why modern estate planning is now focused on flexibility, protection, and control. You'll also learn what probate really is, common mistakes people make with IRAs and trusts, and why regularly reviewing your plan is so important.Whether you're updating an old will, thinking about how to protect your family, or simply trying to better understand how your assets may transfer someday, this conversation offers practical insights to help you make more informed decisions about your legacy.--Ready to take the next step? Last year, 1.1 million people were laid off, numbers not seen since 2020. And 40% of people retire earlier than they planned. COBRA can keep you covered for up to 18 months.✅ The money in your HSA can be used tax-free to pay for qualified health care expenses in retirement.✅ The Rule of 55 lets you take money from your 401(k) early without the 10% penalty.✅ An example of how a family that got a $150,000 severance ended up in a higher tax bracket. If you're 55 or older and worried about a layoff, buyout, or early retirement, then this episode is for you.--

#701: Forget the idea that you need a magic number to retire. Jamie Hopkins is a certified financial planner, professor of taxation at the American College of Financial Services, director of the New York Life Center for Retirement Income, and Top 40 Under 40 financial services professionals from InvestmentNews. His take on retirement planning will make you rethink a few things. We start with the "no magic number" concept. Hopkins explains that fixating on a savings target - whether it's $1 million or $10 million - misses the point. What matters is what income you can generate relative to the lifestyle you want. And that lifestyle shifts. Research shows retirees often spend more than 100 percent of their pre-retirement income in the first few years, then gradually spend less as they age. From there, we get into sequence of returns risk, which Hopkins calls one of the biggest threats to any retirement plan. A market downturn in the first few years of retirement can be nearly impossible to recover from, since you're withdrawing money while your portfolio is declining. We also dig into the well-known "4 percent rule" - which Hopkins prefers to call a "4 percent finding" - and why it only holds up in certain historical contexts. The conversation also covers the topics people tend to avoid. "Silver divorce" - the spike in divorces among people over 60 - is happening at higher rates than most people realize, and it can gut a retirement plan that was built around shared costs and two incomes. We also discuss elder abuse, which Hopkins says is mostly committed by family members or trusted advisors, not strangers - and how AI-generated voice cloning is making financial scams harder to detect. Finally, we end on what Hopkins considers the most important, and most overlooked, element of a good retirement: community. He argues that retirement is actually an ideal time to intentionally rebuild your social circle, choose where you want to live, and figure out what you're retiring to - not just from. Hopkins holds a JD, MBA, LLM, CFP, RICP, CLU, and ChFC. When you think about retirement, what do you see yourself doing? A lot of people don't have an answer to that question, and that's where loneliness can start to creep in. This episode looks at the AARP 2025 loneliness survey, which found that 40% of adults over 45 report feeling lonely. That's the highest it's been since they started tracking this back in 2010. We talk about why loneliness often goes unrecognized, who it affects most, and how the transition to retirement can catch you off guard if you're not prepared for it. Planning for what you're actually going to do with your time matters just as much as planning your income. It's how you build connection, keep your sense of purpose, and protect your wellbeing as you move into this next phase.--
A Roth conversion means paying taxes now instead of later, but is it the right move for your retirement? Whether you're planning for retirement or already there, this episode can help you decide if a Roth conversion makes sense for you.--Ready to take the next step? Most people think of their 401(k) as their retirement plan. Your 401(k) tells you your balance, but it doesn't answer the questions that actually matter: "When can I retire?" "How much can I safely spend each month?" "What about health insurance before age 65?" This episode breaks down what a comprehensive retirement plan looks like and why having it in writing changes everything.--
A common saying is you need a million dollars for retirement, but what does that actually mean for you? In today's episode, you'll meet Tom and Sandy. They have $1 million saved for retirement at age 65, and in their first iteration of their plan, the money was going to run out at age 79. Instead of panicking or giving up on retirement, we tested different strategies to see what actually works for them. This is a hypothetical case study, but these are strategies to consider and test in your own retirement plan. These are the strategies we explore with pre-retirees everyday to help them confidently enter their next chapter.--
Can you really use your 401(k) to buy a house — and would that actually make housing more affordable? There's growing discussion around a proposal tied to Donald Trump that would allow Americans to tap their 401(k) retirement savings for a home purchase, potentially without early withdrawal penalties. On the surface, it sounds helpful. But Econ 101 tells us the second-order effects matter. In this show Kevin Thompson, CFP®, EA, RICP®, founder of 9i Capital Group explains how this would actually work from a tax perspective, how it compares to first-time homebuyer IRA rules, and why increasing access to retirement money could ultimately push home prices higher. You'll learn:▶️ How 401(k) withdrawals are taxed (penalty vs taxable income)▶️ Why housing affordability is more about price than interest rates▶️ How increased demand impacts home values▶️ The long-term risk of pulling from retirement accountsThis is financial education — not political commentary.

Catholic Money Mastermind - Financial Planning conversations with Catholic CFP® Practitioners
Today, Ben is joined by Michael O'Rourke—Apex-based financial advisor, RICP®, and former environmental engineer—for a rich and human-centered conversation about what it really takes to transition from earning a paycheck to generating reliable retirement income. Drawing on years of advising and his work with the Retirement Income Style Awareness (RISA) framework, Michael shares how differences in temperament, risk tolerance, and even marital dynamics shape the way people experience retirement. Their discussion moves beyond spreadsheets into the deeper architecture of a good retirement: understanding longevity risk, discerning lifestyle desires, preparing for late-life care, and shaping a plan that honors each person's unique “money language.” Together, they explore the surprising reality that adding more guaranteed income can actually expand long-term growth potential, why stability in retirement is more about peace of mind than products, and how thoughtful planning becomes a form of stewardship—one that frees people to enjoy their later years without fear of running out. Grounded in both practical experience and a respect for the human person, the conversation offers a vision of retirement where income supports vocation, strengthens marriages, and gives families the confidence to live generously in the years ahead.Key Takeaways:• The “Four L's” of retirement—longevity, lifestyle, legacy, and liquidity—provide a helpful framework for evaluating retirement readiness.• The Retirement Income Certified Professional (RICP®) designation equips advisors to plan across the full arc of retirement, not just investments.• Risk capacity changes over time, and retirees may become either more risk-averse or more flexible depending on health, lifestyle, and family dynamics.• Advisors serve as guides, not dictators, helping clients navigate decisions while honoring their personal values and preferences.• Compatibility between client and advisor matters; shared values, communication style, and trust can make or break the relationship.• Ultimately, good retirement planning is a stewardship exercise, giving retirees a sense of peace, purpose, and permission to enjoy the years ahead without fear of running out of money.Key Timestamps:(03:39) – Transitioning into Retirement Income(07:15) – The Four Ls of Retirement Planning(20:09) – Balancing Safety and Flexibility in Retirement(27:59) – The Role of Annuities in Retirement Planning(29:09) – Adapting Investment Strategies to Client Needs(35:37) – Finding the Right Financial AdvisorKey Topics Discussed:Catholic Money Mastermind, Catholic financial planning, Catholic financial planners, Catholic financial advisors, Ben Martinek, faith and financesMentions:Website: https://www.hsiadvisors.net/ Mentions: Are You a Stock or a Bond?: Identify Your Own Human Capital for a Secure Financial Future by Moshe A. In this powerful conversation, host Christopher Hensley, RICP®, CES® sits down once again with George Kinder—internationally recognized as the father of life planning and the visionary behind the global Fiduciary in All Things (FIAT) movement. Together, they explore what it would mean for our institutions, our democracy, and our financial systems to finally act in the best interest of the people they serve. Kinder explains how a fiduciary society—rooted in truth, people, democracy, and the planet—could dissolve many of the challenges we face today while preserving the entrepreneurial energy, innovation, and competitiveness that have fueled economic growth. From redefining the role of leadership to examining how polarization and mistrust have fractured civic life, this episode offers an inspiring blueprint for a more ethical and human-centered future. You'll learn: Why fiduciary principles shouldn't stop at financial advice, but extend to government, media, business, and technology How FIAT could reshape democracy so leaders work for the people, not their own agendas The importance of mindfulness and deep listening in building trustworthy institutions Kinder's vision for a world where business leaders become true heroes and models for future generations How AI, truth, and governance intersect—and why ethical guardrails matter now more than ever What a civilization "of the people, by the people, and for the people" looks like when fiduciary values guide decision-making Whether you're a financial professional, a policymaker, a parent, or simply someone looking for a more trustworthy world, this conversation will challenge and inspire you to imagine what a fully fiduciary society could achieve.

Drawing insights from Charles Ellis's The Index Revolution and Dr. Daniel Crosby's The Behavioral Investor, they explore YFP's own investment philosophy and the benefits of an actively passive approach. The episode covers the importance of long-term planning, the impact of fees on investment returns, and why human behavior often works against successful investing. Tune in to see why YFP advocates for a passive approach while actively managing portfolios to align with clients' financial goals. What you'll learn in this episode: The key differences between passive and active investing—and where each approach fits within a pharmacist's financial plan.
