She's super passionate about pre and post-natal fitness and lives the FIT4MOM mission statement every day, “helping moms make strides in fitness, motherhood, and life.” This mompreneur is on a mission to help mamas in our community find strength in motherhood and live life empowered. Please welcome our neighbor Samantha Welch!Samantha Welch in her own words: “Hey I'm Samantha, wife to Michael and Mama to two fierce little girls, Parker and River. I've worn many hats throughout my life but Motherhood is by far the hardest but in the best way. These days you can catch me trying to look composed as I run a small fitness franchise, raise my kiddos, and find time for self-care. Prior to becoming a business owner and Mom I was working full-time in the film industry, decorating sets for television. Honestly, It was a career that I worked my butt off to get into, it was a 6 figure job with amazing benefits and I was good at it! When Parker, my oldest daughter, came into the world, the passions in my heart shifted from becoming an Emmy-winning decorator to being a Mom! My heart was now outside of my body and I needed to make a shift.During my maternity leave, I found an amazing fitness program that was tailored to moms who could work out with their kiddos in tow, It was called FIT4MOM. I was so scared to go to the first class that I had Michael come sit on the bench at the park just in case Parker was crying or something (postpartum anxiety is real y'all). I signed up for a membership and started going to classes as often as I could, it became a routine for Parker and me to head to the park. She would often nap in the stroller while I was able to workout, but it was more than that; I was able to have conversations with other women who were going through similar situations and phases of life that I was, and I was able to have a new form of self-care and a bonding experience for me and my daughter. I had instant community and a village that was with me through everything, including the diagnosis of a rare disease in my youngest daughter, River. I never felt alone, FIT4MOM was there to lift me up and hold me close (even during the pandemic mind you) When I was offered the opportunity to take over the franchise I almost didn't hesitate, I didn't know the first thing about running a business but I knew a lot about leadership, mom life, and fitness. So I jumped in, and it's been a hell of a ride, but for sure one worth waiting in line for!”Fit4Mom  is the country's largest fitness program for moms offering pre and post-natal fitness classes for every stage of motherhood. When a group of women gets together, lets their hair down, and shares their purpose and passions that's when ALL the magic happens. If Brené Brown says vulnerability is our most accurate way to measure courage then our guest today is both BRAVE and FEARLESS. Our guest today,  Christen Lawrie, believes you have earned the right to hear her open up as she shares her experiences and feelings on family, life, running 3 small businesses, and the pursuit of the good life here in sunny Santa Clarita, California.A little bit about Christen in her own words " I am a registered nurse who became a bit burnt out a few years ago. My family and I have some goals and dreams that we just weren't able to reach on our W-2 jobs. Our faith has always informed what we do, and so looking at income options, it seemed the best way forward for our family, and to make a bigger impact in our community was through business ownership. The opportunity to purchase Children's Orchard came up in 2019 and we made the leap for the first two years, I worked at the hospital and ran the store with my husband. I would go into the store at 5 AM before a shift, scrubs, and all then run to the hospital work my 12 hours and come back to the store to finish up whatever loose ends there were for the day. That became unsustainable, and so we made the decision to be “all in” with our business. We have always wanted Children's Orchard to be a refuge of sorts. To use the space as a safe place for kids and families, as a place to provide needs and also joy. We are still in the process of figuring out how to do that more, but that's the heart behind what we do.Then, in 2022 we purchased two additional businesses- The Closet Trading Company. Our goal now is to utilize our business resources as a platform to contribute to our community- we've partnered with a local organization, Saving Innocence, to support their work in rescuing kids from trafficking.Stay tuned- we have BIG plans in the works!"Fair warning - you might walk away from today's conversation admiring Christen's courage to show up to our interview and be seen. Her energy is infectious and it's a vibe I'm so proud to have in our community, Santa Clarita, CA. Hey there and welcome to the first podcast drop of 2023 for SCV Connected. I'm Kelly O'Keefe host of the SCV connected podcast. This episode with just me. This is my open love letter to my community. And my promise to you. And I'm inviting you to pull up a seat. I've created this podcast to celebrate my local community, Santa Clarita, California. I had an insatiable desire to highlight people or gems as I call them. In our community, doing meaningful and impactful work, showcasing what I know to be true. That our similarities outweigh our differences. And while I still believe that to be true. I've discovered that everyone has a gem inside them. A divine gift or calling, if you will. A gift they've been given to share with the world and it's something to be celebrated. Everyone in some varying capacity has the desire to be seen, heard, and cheered for. As they share that gift for the world. However, I have to be honest. Sometimes my vision gets blurry. Trying to see through all the filters and veils of perfection and the walls we've built. We hide behind these fast-paced digital worlds we're plugged into. Like so many other women and men. I too have had seasons when I really struggle when it comes to doing life in community. Specifically relational community. And I know I'm not alone   I have to be honest. Scrolling behind a screen engaged in air quotes, community, avoiding the difficulties that arise in having a relational community. Is really hiding from taking personal responsibility. Even that still sounds a little filtering. So, let me try to say it like this. I am the last person that should be giving advice when it comes to relational community. I certainly don't have the playbook on how to do this. I get it wrong a lot too. And when it comes to social media, I love myself a good filter, a fun caption sprinkled with an emoji or two. Or three. What I've learned. And I know to be true with every single fiber in me. Our world or culture, as I say. Is not moving in a direction that encourages us to be present. Unfiltered. In-person together, belly-to-belly in community regularly. There is a war for our attention.   Coming at us in a pace faster than ever before. And we're just not prepared. And while I too get sucked into being plugged in. I've learned that community done solely through a screen is not for me. I crave real, authentic, transparent, unfiltered connection. I'm committed to showing up in this podcast space like that. And I want to encourage others in our community as well. I don't know about you, but I'm impatient as hell when it comes to shattering. This veil of perfection. I want to get to the good stuff, but it takes time. When it comes to Santa Clarita, California, and what it has to offer. In terms of things like school and safety. The education quality of life, et cetera. You name it. We've got it. Basically, we check all the boxes!Living connected in community takes intentionality. And practice. It's work. This space is committed to it. This space is a work in progress. A movement. Because when one person shatters that veil of filters and perfection. It creates a ripple effect and the entire community benefits from it. Let's make 2023, our most connected year yet. Together, of course. Hit follow on your favorite podcast app. Support the show and connect  SCV Connected is on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. **TRIGGER WARNING**This episode discusses the importance of shattering the silence that often surrounds suicide and encourages people to seek help. Recommendations if you or someone you know is dealing with thoughts of suicide - call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-8255  but sometimes callers can be on hold for hours. The immediate thing they need to do is to talk to someone, anyone - a trusted family member, friend, teacher, counselor, youth pastor, or small group leader. I talk with Brandi Elizabeth about her experiences being in the public eye while navigating a misunderstood and difficult mental health journey. Brandi talks about the impact of living in the pause and how that has allowed her to live life more freely. Meet our SCV neighbor, Kelli Marshall."I have worked in finance for nearly 15 years and about 10 years ago (after the birth of my first son) I decided to start my own business consulting with individuals, families, and small business owners. One of my true joys is helping individuals and families learn how to budget, set financial goals, and how to achieve those goals. I work to help people address the very common problem of, "I just don't know where my money goes!" By working with me and learning my techniques and methods of managing personal finances, the level of financial stress of my clients is significantly reduced and instead of worrying, more time and energy can be spent focusing on achieving financial goals (i.e. being debt-free) and growing personal wealth. It doesn't matter how much money you have, all money should be budgeted and managed.I also truly enjoy working with small business owners. Small business owners are BUSY and they should be spending their time focusing on their geniuses, not bogged down by the day-to-day management of their business finances. By working with me, I take the responsibility, stress and time-consuming work of managing the business's finances, saving the business owner time and money! I also specialize in teaching and setting up a "Profit First" methodology for small business owners. They should be paying themselves first! If I'm not helping others with their finances, I'm driving my wonderful husband a bit nutty, chasing my 3 kids and unruly puppy around, or cheering on the L.A. Dodgers."Real People, Real Dreams, Real Life in Santa Clarita. This is Santa Clarita Connected.
