Miguel is back for his second appearance on the podcast (last was Ep.53) and he absolutely blew me away with some of the things he said in this one. Miguel is currently on his path to get a PhD in clinical psychology, currently as a Master's student at Columbia University with a BSc. at McGill University in nutritional biochemistry. He's top three smartest dudes I know and an absolute top-notch guy. He's also done plenty of work in the fitness industry with conducting and interpreting the cutting-edge science in the field with leading experts. We don't cover too much fitness in this one, but it was a goldmine of knowledge nonetheless. You won't be disappointed. In this chat, we cover (in order): -Miguel's background and interests -What he's learned from his new romantic relationship -Radical honesty vs true vulnerability -Characteristics of truly intelligent people -Understanding the "shadow" of yourself and others -Miguel's pursuit of getting his PhD in Clinical Psychology -His aspirations to write a book and create content around psychology and philosophy -The psychological significance of the Bible -What happens to your thoughts and memories when you experience betrayal -Dante's Inferno and the Hero's Journey -Metacognition and identifying what you truly value -How to figure out who you are and ask yourself hard questions -Miguel's 3-layer process for self-reflection -Carl Rogers "On Becoming A Person" -What happens to your anxiety, sense of self, and well-being when you lie -Why people turn towards drugs, sex, porn, etc. for "artificial meaning" -Miguel's advice for getting your shit together -Why Miguel isn't a fan of Tim Ferriss, Cal Newport, and Ryan Holiday -Books he recommends for philosophy 101 -And more! This chat with Miguel is the epitome of what "The More Than Fitness Podcast" is about. In the first half of the episode, we get into the nitty-gritty science of the pros and cons of fasting, intuitive eating, and what it truly means to be "evidence-based." Then, for the second half of the episode, we do a 180 and get more personal about what it means to actually be vulnerable in a relationship with someone else. Miguel is one of the smartest people I know—he's currently getting his Master's degree at Columbia University (studied nutritional biochemistry for undergrad at McGill University) under a mentor from Yale—so it makes sense that he approaches relationships very logically and in a calculated manner (his words). He tries to mitigate his risk of getting hurt by putting walls up, but he said he's finally ready to drop these walls to take his relationship to the next level. Which, as we discuss, can be terrifying. This was such a fun episode and I think you're going to learn and feel more than ever. Enjoy! We were frankly confused. What are people talking about when they refer to Intuitive Eating? Is it a weight loss strategy or something else? We asked Miguel Blacutt to explain the role of intuitive eating. He’s a Masters student in Applied Physiology at Columbia University, works as research assistant to Jeff Nippard, and is currently collaborating with Dr. Andy Galpin. Here are some of our thoughts: Is it eating whatever you want whenever you want? Is it simple dieting without tracking? If you don’t track (calories, macros, etc.), can you actually lose weight? Is it just about internalizing what appropriate portions look like? Is it NOT about dieting at all? You can find Miguel on Instagram @mblacutt, and check out his podcast: The Flexible Dieting Lifestyle Podcast. We kick off the show talking about…dogs . Hosted by Mike Farr (@silentmikke) and Jim McDonald (@thejimmcd). Produced by Jim McDonald Production assistance by Connor O’Neal. Theme by Aaron Moore. Branding by Joseph Manzo.
We’ve always heard that muscle grows when you break it down through exercise, lifting weights, etc. In fact, we’ve always been told that it was the ONLY way, but is that really true? We asked Miguel Blacutt , someone who has been intensely interested in this subject, to catch us up on the latest research. He’s a Masters student in Applied Physiology at Columbia University, works as research assistant to Jeff Nippard, and is currently collaborating with Dr. Andy Galpin. Here are some of our thoughts: Is “no pain, no gain” still a good strategy, or is it overkill? Is muscle soreness a good indicator that you worked out enough or too much? If tearing muscle down isn’t the solution to muscle growth, what is? What the relationship between building bigger muscles and building strength?
