#540: How Can We Improve Body Image and Self-Esteem Without Physique Change? – Gabrielle Fundaro, PhD & Eric Trexler, PhD

Body image and self-worth are deeply intertwined concepts that influence how we see ourselves and interact with the world. Many people believe that changing their physique is the key to improving their body image, but is it really that simple? This connection between appearance and self-esteem raises important questions about how we define confidence and whether our sense of worth should be tied to how we look. Our relationship with food plays a crucial role in how we view ourselves. While some see food as fuel, others attach much more significance to their eating habits, often linking dietary choices to discipline, success, or failure. But what happens when these beliefs become too rigid? Understanding how our perceptions of food and body image are shaped is essential for navigating the balance between health, happiness, and personal fulfillment. Physique change, often seen as a positive goal, can bring about unexpected psychological impacts. Pursuing a leaner or more muscular body might boost temporary feelings of confidence, but could it also reinforce negative patterns of thought? In an episode co-hosted with Dr. Eric Trexler, Danny talks with Dr. Gabrielle Fundaro in order to tackle some of these concepts and questions. There is a great deal of fitness content about strategically modifying your diet or changing your physique. Many of these strategies may appear to be simple on paper, but they are inseparable from the complexity of human perception and emotion. Whether we like it or not, diet or physique manipulation inherently interact with concepts relating to one's confidence, body image, self-esteem, and relationship with food. Further, many fitness coaches and clients mistakenly believe that poor body image or self-esteem are improved by simply changing one's body. A growing area of interest in the fitness space aims to directly address and improve these outcomes by focusing on beliefs and behaviors in the absence of physique manipulation. In this crossover episode with Sigma Nutrition Radio and the Sports Nutrition Association, Eric Trexler and Danny Lennon are joined by Dr. Gabrielle Fundaro to take an evidence-based and practical look at the ways diet or physique modifications interact with confidence, body image, and self-worth.

Professor Phillips has received several grants and awards for his scientific activities. He is also an expert and a key leader in protein research in terms of exercise, weight reduction and aging. He is even one of the most cited scientists in the world in the field of protein research! Instagram: @mackinprof FB: Stuart Phillips, PhD Today´s program will include: First 50 minutes a lecture about An Evidence-Based Approach to Understanding Resistance Training will take place. Topics Professor Phillips will cover: – what is evidence-based resistance training? – How much of an effect does protein have on muscle gains? – Does load drive hypertrophic or strength adaptations? – Are systemic hormonal changes affecting hypertrophy? Then there´s 10 minutes for our questions Questions: 1. Differences in protein intake men/women. Do women need same amounts per kg of bodyweight? 2. His opinion on protein leverage hypothesis. Is it real thing in humans? 3a. Does higher protein intake lead to faster aging? Does it depend on particular amino acids (methionine etc.)? 3b. What is optimal for longevity regarding protein intake? My theory is that theoretically it would be best to restrict proteins in adulthood and then increase protein intake in older age because of sarcopenia and anabolic resistance. 4) Does leucine/animal source matter opposing to, for example, plant based protein intake only, when enough daily protein is consumed? (new paradigm in protein science?) Ending Thank you for your time, Professor Phillips. We are honored to be able to learn from such a world class scientist. Next livestreams will be Karl Nadolsky on endocrinology/hormones and Gabrielle Fundaro, PhD (VitaminPhD IG) on gut microbiome/myths Farewell and thanks to Professor Phillips and Institute of modern nutrition as well as the audience. What is gut health. What even is the microbiome and how does it play a role in our gut let alone our overall health? What are pre and pro-biotics all about? What should someone do who might be experiencing digestive issues? Who do they see? Does maintaining a healthy gut really prevent many diseases from developing? Hear from gut health expert Gabrielle Fundaro, PhD on all of these topics and more on this episode! Dr. Fundaro received her PhD in Human nutrition, foods, and exercise; is an ISSN sports nutrionist, owner of her own lifestyle coaching company Vitamin PhD Nutrition; and the author of "The Science of Gut Health" which dives deep into what gut health is all about. This episode has a lot of gems within it, make sure to give it a listen! Dr. Fundaro's Links: Instagram Twitter Link Show Outline: What do you do on a day to day basis? Why do you do what you do? What does preventive medicine mean to you? Many people claim the gut is the key to good health - thus working on gut health becoming “preventive” for many other conditions such as depression, diabetes, etc. When did the gut become linked with health? Is it a big deal or not? In the name of prevention, many people consume probiotics/prebiotiscs. What is the difference between pro and pre-biotics? When should these be consumed? Do certain foods “ruin” the gut microbiome? What about medications? What should someone do who is having digestive issues? How do they know if their symptoms are related to their gut? Who is qualified to give advice regarding gut health? Physicians vs. online coaches vs. PhDs, etc. What do you think about the future of gut health research? I've always heard, we are at the “beginning” of discovery but what potential lays ahead? If you are asked “how do I get healthy?” while waiting for your coffee at starbucks, what do you tell them in 2 minutes? Join our Mailing List HERE: Mailchimp

Returning guests Dr Gabrielle Fundaro and Dr Ben House discuss how the divide in the nutrition community spurred by the “diet” and “anti diet” debates can potentially lead to inaction and subsequent unaddressed problems. When there is a passionate debate across a moral divide, data often goes by the way side. This occurs when obesity focused practitioners and researchers don't acknowledge pathways to improved health other than weight loss, or the potential harm from weight loss attempts which are often unsuccessful. Further, it can occur when weight neutral focused practitioners and researchers don't acknowledge that in some cases, weight loss is the outcome with the largest potential to positively impact health, or that multidisciplinary evidence-based approaches result in successful weight loss maintenance much more often than other approaches. In the middle is the trainer or nutrition practitioner who is aware of all the problems, but unsure of what tools will solve them, and is also worried that some of the tools have potential for doing harm. In this conversation, we hope to equip you with the understanding of what tools are best in which situations, so you can become a part of the solution.

In this week's episode the boys are joined by two nutrition powerhouses, Dr Gabrielle Fundaro and Shannon Beer. Gabrielle aka vitaminphd, has become well known as a go-to resource on all things gut health. In addition to her telehealth services she is also a Renaissance Periodization coach and can be found all over the world presenting on nutrition (when not in the midst of a global pandemic). Shannon is a well known nutrition coach with Flex Success and author of the book Life After Dieting.   Shannon and Gabrielle have been working together on their series, Bridging the Gap to bring a "comprehensive coaching" model to the nutrition coaching sphere. Their work is focused on creating a more "client centric" model that removes the authoritarian aspect of coaching.   In the pursuit of adding context to myopic issues, Dean and Jeb wanted to discuss the true intentions behind intuitive eating and the health at every size movement. These two topics get lambasted by many in the nutrition and fitness sphere since, as is often the case, the topics just aren't understood. So this discussion will hopefully shed some light on both the origins and realistic expectations of both intuitive eating and HAES.   1:15 Intro 4:30 Defining our terms: Intuitive eating and HAES 10:00 What is the structure that drives food behaviors? 12:00 "Intuitive eating isn't just eating donuts" 12:45 "gentle nutrition" 14:00 HAES/Weight stigma 16:00 Simplifying a complex topic until it's inaccurate 19:00 What are the downsides? 24:00 Not all things are interventions 25:00 How do we implement a food relationship strategy in a macro counting world? 32:00 There's more to the story than losing weight 35:00 How to be a better coach/Motivational interviewing 40:00 Helping both client and coach 42:30 Compliance vs Adherence "Just Say No" 45:00 "Put the condom on the banana" 46:00 How to help the ambivalent client 52:00 How can we do no harm?   Dr Gabrielle Fundaro vitaminphdnutrition.com vitaminphd on IG   Shannon Beer flexsuccess.com.au shannonbeer_ on IG
