Dr. Chris Rhodes is a PhD in Nutritional Biochemistry from UC Davis, and a Nutrition, Biohacking, and Longevity expert who has spent his research career unraveling the mysteries behind intermittent fasting and its incredible ability to optimize health and extend lifespan. During his 8 years of clinical research into prolonged fasting, Dr. Rhodes uncovered that a 36 hour fast was able to greatly enhance the biological function of the human body, taking already young healthy people and optimizing their cellular performance, recovery, and protective systems. Dr. Rhodes discovered that these effects were due to a unique set of molecules that are produced in the body only during long periods of fasting and that these “fasting metabolites” could be used to recreate the beneficial effects of fasting without actually needing to fast. To share this breakthrough with the world, Dr. Rhodes co-founded Mimio Health, a biotech company creating first-of-their-kind biomimetic supplements designed from human biology to optimize health, slow aging, and enhance longevity.Website: https://mimiohealth.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/chrishrhodes/360 Age Reversal: https://www.360agereversalprogram.com/Connect:Dr. Trip Goolsby & LeNae Goolsby are the co-founders of the Infinite Health Integrative Medicine Center, and are also the co-authors of the book “Think and Live Longer”.

It is not intended to be a substitute for informed medical advice or care. You should not use this information to diagnose or treat any health issue without consulting your doctor. Always seek medical advice before making any lifestyle changes. T. Colin Campbell, PhD has been dedicated to the science of human health for more than 60 years. His primary focus is on the association between diet and disease, particularly cancer. Although largely known for the China Study--one of the most comprehensive studies of health and nutrition ever conducted, and recognized by The New York Times as the “Grand Prix of epidemiology”--Dr. Campbell's profound impact also includes extensive involvement in education, public policy, and laboratory research. Dr. Campbell grew up on a dairy farm and was the first in his family to go to college, where he studied pre-veterinary medicine at Pennsylvania State University. After obtaining his bachelor's degree, and while completing his first year at the University of Georgia veterinary school, he received a telegram from a well known professor at Cornell University, offering a scholarship and research opportunity too good to turn down. And so he completed his education at Cornell University (M.S., Ph.D.) and MIT (Research Associate) in nutrition, biochemistry and toxicology. He then spent 10 years on the faculty of Virginia Tech's Department of Biochemistry and Nutrition before returning to Cornell in 1975 where he presently holds his Endowed Chair as the Jacob Gould Schurman Professor Emeritus of Nutritional Biochemistry in the Division of Nutritional Sciences. Dr. Campbell's research experience includes both laboratory experiments and large-scale human studies. He has received over 70 grant-years of peer-reviewed research funding (mostly with NIH), served on grant review panels of multiple funding agencies, actively participated in the development of national and international nutrition policy, and authored over 350 research papers, most published in peer-reviewed science journals. Throughout his career, he has confronted a great deal of confusion surrounding nutrition and its effects. It is precisely this confusion that he has focused so much on, in recent years. In order to synthesize the findings of his long and rewarding career, and to give back to the public whose lives are threatened by rampant misinformation and special interests, Dr. Campbell co-wrote The China Study: Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-term Health (2005, 2016), which has sold more than 3 million copies worldwide and has been translated into 50 foreign languages. He is also the author of the The New York Times bestseller Whole (2013), The Low Carb Fraud (2013), and The Future of Nutrition. An Insider's Look at the Science, Why We Keep Getting It Wrong and How to Start Getting It Right (2020). Several documentary films feature Dr. Campbell and his research, including Forks Over Knives, Eating You Alive, Food Matters, and PlantPure Nation. He continues to share evidence-based information on health and nutrition whenever given the opportunity. He has delivered hundreds of lectures around the world and he is the founder of the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies and the online Plant-Based Nutrition Certificate powered by eCornell.

This episode was fascinating. I think we learned more in this one podcast than maybe any other conversation we've had. Dr. John Neustadt has an international reputation as a Doctor, researcher, and integrative medical expert on the topic of Osteoporosis. He became renowned in his field through his nutritional medicine research, clinical work, books he wrote, and his work with the FDA on evaluating the use of natural products for the potential treatment of rare diseases. He has developed million-dollar businesses, educated physicians on improving patient outcomes and the general public on how to make sure they're getting the care they need and the results they want, and now has his own line of supplements to treat the adverse effects of Osteoporosis. Dr. Neustadt has published more than 100 medical articles, written four health and wellness books and is now a #1 Amazon Best Selling Author in the field of Osteoporosis. His most recent book is, Fracture-Proof Your Bones: A Comprehensive Guide to Osteoporosis. We love the fact that Dr. Neustadt is working to educate other physicians on using functional medicine with their patients. Dr. J (as we like to call him) is a highly sought out speaker at medical conferences he was recognized as one of the Top Ten Cited Authors in the world for his work. Over the years he has specialized in hard-to-treat, chronic degenerative diseases through an integrative approach that emphasizes identifying and correcting the underlying causes of disease. AND He was the first naturopathic doctor to be voted Best Doctor among all physicians in his area. When the award was announced, the local newspaper stated: “It is noteworthy that Dr. Neustadt did not win ‘best naturopathic doctor;' he won best doctor. Today, he is the Founder and President of Nutritional Biochemistry, Inc. (NBI). And let me tell you what...this man, genuinely, want to heal people and educate the general public (and doctors) how to ensure quality care is provided and received. In this episode Dr. J teaches us: Osteoporosis is a disease in which the degenerative forces are "winning" and outpacing your body's ability to build new bone. Essentially, you're losing bone density at a faster pace that new bone can be rebuilt, increasing your likelihood of fracture. The bone is a living and dynamic tissue and there are things what we can to build the bone back up and reverse osteoporosis. We also have to be weary of what breaks bone down. A bone density test is the primary test modern doctors use to measure of the effects of osteoporosis today and the only tool most doctors speak to their patients about. However, new research reflects that the dangers of osteoporosis largely occur due to factors other than loss of density. Many medications we are prescribed today weaken our bones and put us at risk for osteoporosis. These medications include those that treat depression and acid blockers. It is recommended you read the inserts that come with your prescribed medications or ask the pharmacist to see if there is an osteoporosis related side effect. The mediterranean diet has been shown to reduce the risk for osteoporosis by 20% and reduce hip fractures by 21%, the most dangerous type of fracture. With every forkful of food you are either feeding the disease or improving your health. Dr. John has a mission and so do we! We want you to be the best version of yourself. That means we want you to be strong and healthy so you can rock midlife! THIS Is your time! And we want to give you the tools and resources to get unstuck and create your best life ever. Did you know that bone health issues don't just start in your older age? And we'll bet you didn't realize broken bones can be fatal! Bone health needs to be prioritized in your younger years. Tune in to learn more about bone health and improve your vitality for years to come with Dr. John Neustadt!Today Jenn is joined by Dr. John Neustadt to talk about bone health. He talks about why both health is worth prioritizing and discusses the tools that are commonly used to check bone health (and how accurate they are). There is eye opening information in this episode about how some medications can impact bone health and how protecting your bones may end up as a matter of life or death. The second half of the episode focuses on what you can do to improve your vitality and prolong bone health. Dr. Neustadt covers so much valuable information during this episode, it is a must listen! The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, discussing wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store.IN THIS EPISODE: ●  [5:59] Why did Dr. John Neustadt move from the tech field to naturopathic medicine with a focus on bone health?●  [14:18] Why is bone health worth prioritizing before our older years?●  [17:17] How can a broken hip lead to mortality? ●  [19:00] What tools are commonly used to measure bone health?●  [25:10] Dr. Neustadt gives an approachable biology lesson to understand the structure and function of bones. ●  [27:50] What metrics or tools can we focus on to better understand the health of our bones?●  [33:16] How can you prolong your bone health? ●  [41:11] When it comes to supplements for bone health, is calcium enough? KEY TAKEAWAYS: ●  [15:00] If you're a woman 45 years or older, your risk for an osteoporosis fracture is equal to your combined risk of breast uterine and ovarian cancer.●  [26:17] Minerals give bones their hardness, but it's collagen that gives bones their flexibility and ultimately, their strength. ●  [30:09] Medications such as antidepressants can make your bones more brittle and likely to break due to serotonin destroying the bone. It disrupts the natural balance of bone building cells. Research shows that for people taking antidepressants for 1-5 years, 1 in 19 people are expected to break a bone. QUOTES:  “The real thing we're trying to work with and prevent is fractures because they're so deadly. Every 30 seconds somewhere in the world, somebody with osteoporosis is breaking a bone. In fact, globally, osteoporosis is second only to cardiovascular disease as a health concern, and it accounts for more days spent in a hospital than other diseases like heart attacks, diabetes and breast cancer.” - Dr. John Neustadt“It's been discovered not that long ago that it's part of our endocrine or hormonal system. There are some hormones involved like osteocalcin that have been shown to help with blood sugar and glucose and insulin. So that does more than just help us walk and lay down and stand up and move around.” - Dr. John Neustadt“The most predictive and consistent predictor of a future fracture is somebody's gait and mobility. Can they walk unassisted? Can they stand up from a seated position easily? How fast can they walk? Anything we can do to prevent somebody falling can prevent somebody's fractures? Then what we want to do is create the environment in the body that will actually help to maintain and grow strong bones, to maintain strong bones, promote healthy bone density, but also just to promote health within the bones entirely.” - Dr. John Neustadt“There are multiple studies now that show that all you have to do is walk an average of 7,000 to 7,500 steps a day. The benefits seem to plateau at 7,500 steps per day. And that's associated with a 50 to 70 percent reduction in all cause mortality.” - Dr. John Neustadt"Health, across the board, comes down to a handful of common things and...even with a lot of the diagnoses and things that are out there, we have a lot in our control and we can actually, really take a proactive approach." - Jenn TrepeckRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramGUEST RESOURCESNBI Health WebsiteJohn Neustadt's LinkedInJohn Neustadt's TwitterNBI Health Facebook PageNBI Health YouTubeGUEST BIO:With us today is Dr. John Neustadt (New-Stat), ND, the Founder and President of Nutritional Biochemistry, Inc. In today's episode, we dive into the importance of Omega-3 fats and their impact on overall health and well-being. Our special guest, Dr. Bill Harris, sheds light on the significance of Omega-3 in lowering triglyceride levels, improving cardiovascular health, and more. Bill Harris has a PhD in Nutritional Biochemistry and has been studying omega-3 fatty acids for the last 40 years. During that time, he has published over 340 papers on omega-3 and been the recipient of 5 NIH grants on omega-3 fatty acids. In 2004, he co-developed a new blood test called the “Omega-3 Index," and in 2009, he formed OmegaQuant Analytics, LLC, to offer the test to researchers, clinicians and consumers. In 2020 he started the Fatty Acid Research Institute to accelerate the discovery of fatty acid and health relationships. His scientific productivity was recently ranked among the top 2% in a survey of scientists worldwide. Episode Highlights: The Link between Omega-3, Triglyceride Levels, and Mortality: Low levels of Omega-3 increase the risk of mortality, especially in individuals who smoke. Non-smokers with high Omega-3 levels have the lowest risk of death. Discover why maintaining a healthy Omega-3 index is crucial for longevity. Debunking Myths about Vegan Diets and Omega-3: Vegan diets may not provide sufficient Omega-3 fatty acids. B12 and fatty acids like EPA and DHA play a vital role in disproving the idea that a vegan diet is enough for human nutrition. Learn about the importance of supplementation for individuals following plant-based diets. The Best Sources of Omega-3: Fish such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines are excellent sources of Omega-3 fats. Explore the benefits of incorporating these fish into your diet and the recommended serving sizes. Addressing Concerns about Mercury in Fish: Debunking the misconceptions surrounding mercury levels in fish consumption, particularly tuna. Dr. Harris highlights the positive effects of Omega-3 on child development, emphasizing that concerns about mercury are often exaggerated. The Accessibility of Omega-3 Testing: Dr. Harris discusses the lack of understanding surrounding Omega-3s and emphasizes the importance of testing for optimal levels. Discover how Omega quant testing is now readily accessible, providing valuable insights into individual Omega-3 levels. As a special offer for our podcast listeners, Omega quant testing is available with a discount. Don't miss out on this opportunity! Lots of programs and benefits most often don't lead to a more well employee. However, when employers install a culture of health in the workplace, employees are more than twice as likely to reach their well-being goals than employees who are still subject to a workplace wellness model that formed more than 60 years ago. Richard Safeer, MD, earned his BS in Nutritional Biochemistry at Cornell University under the tutelage of T. Colin Campbell, author of the China Study, before attending medical school at State University of New York at Buffalo. Dr. Safeer is the Chief Medical Director of Employee Health and Well-being at Johns Hopkins Medicine, where he leads the Healthy at Hopkins employee health and well-being strategy. He also holds faculty appointments in the School of Medicine and Public Health at Johns Hopkins University. Prior to arriving at Hopkins, Dr. Safeer practiced family medicine in Northern Virginia. He was then on faculty at the George Washington University, serving as the Residency Director of Family Medicine in his last year at the institution. He was the Medical Director of an Occupational Health Center in Baltimore and Wellness Director for the Mid-Atlantic region of the parent company, just before starting at CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield in Baltimore, Maryland as the Medical Director of Preventive Medicine. He has been credited by some for bringing ‘wellness' in to the realm of responsibilities of the managed care industry. He also led CareFirst BCBS to be among the first cohort of health plans to be accredited for Wellness by NCQA. He holds faculty appointments in both the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine as well as the School of Public Health. He continues to see patients one day a week in the Pediatric Cardiology department.
