In June 2018, we began interviewing five of the people responsible for audio in Half-Life: Alyx from Valve Corporation. The Audio in Half-Life: Alyx introduces you to each person involved in the creation of sounds in the game, and highlights their individual roles for bringing the game to life. Mike Morasky wrote the music for Half-Life: Alyx. Roland Shaw made audio for the creatures and monsters, and for all of the physics objects like matchboxes and lockers and footsteps. Dave Feise did the ambiences, UI sounds, and some of the tools like the Combine fabricator and the hacking puzzles. Emily Ridgway wrote and processed the dialog from the Combine soldiers, and designed the speakers that float alongside a player's ears on Valve's VR Index headset. Lakulish Antani co-invented Steam Audio, a tool for game developers to make environments and the objects in them react with realistic sound. All of the source audio for this documentary is available to patrons of Level with Emily. The source audio includes seven interviews with Mike Morasky, four interviews with Roland Shaw, four interviews with Dave Feise, three interviews with Emily Ridgway and three interviews with Lakulish Antani. Level with Emily Reese would like to thank Mike Morasky for this incredible opportunity and experience, and to Lakulish Antani, Dave Feise, Emily Ridgway, and Roland Shaw for the conversations, and to Valve for allowing it all to happen. Thank you to Nick Marinelli for transcription, to Nick and Chase Bethea for their feedback, and to producer Sam Keenan. [Left 4 Dead](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Left_4_Dead_(series)), a zombie infested first-person shooter, went into new territory for Valve in 2008. Hinging on a dynamic AI Director, the game reacts to your skill and movements by procedurally generating enemies, events and several other elements. Importantly, music is a huge part of that unpredictability. [Mike Morasky](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Morasky) eschewed a traditional score in order to play to the game's strengths, constructing a complex system that organically constructs personalised soundtracks for each session. I spoke to Mike for this L4D 1 & 2 special, which also features the Witch herself ([Ellen McLain](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellen_McLain)) and [Jonathan Coulton](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonathan_Coulton) - a popular songwriter who contributed to L4D2. With only two games, [the Portal series](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal_(series)) has still managed a gigantic impact on players. Its inventive puzzles are addictive, just like the acerbic jibes of the title's main antagonist, GLaDOS. Behind it all, synth-laden drones and melodic narratives help immerse you into the haunting madhouse of Aperture Science. Its soundtrack was composed primarily by [Mike Morasky](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Morasky), who joins me for an exhaustive journey through Portal's audio. I also spoke to [Jonathan Coulton](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonathan_Coulton), who wrote famed end-credits tracks like "Still Alive" and [Ellen McLain](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellen_McLain), the voice of GLaDOS herself. Together, we leave no stone unturned. An in depth career spanning interview!
Portal came out of nowhere in 2007 as an innovative action puzzler that quickly became one of the best games to come out in recent years. It was time to make a slight shift in the Musicast format and do game from this console generation. I couldn't think of a better games soundtrack to feature than Portal. Portal: Composers, Kelly Bailey and Mike Morask. "Still Alive," was written by Jonathan Coulton. Portal II: Composers Mike Morasky. “Want you Gone” by Jonathan Coulton I hope you enjoy the ambient techno sounds from the series. This is defiantly music that you can just kick back and put on as background music as you grind your way through your day job. I know that's what I'll be doing. Please take a moment to leave your comments below and let us know what you think of the new Musicast series and don't forget to send us in your requests for game soundtracks you would like us to feature. We hope you enjoy listening to the show. You can also subscribe to the podcast via iTunes
