Yes, the CIA tortured inmates suspected of terrorism in the immediate aftermath of 9/11. Two of the primary men involved with creating this program are Mormon, one was called to be a Bishop after taking $81mn from the government to torture people. We discuss the report, how it came to light, some of the key figures along the way, and the fight over the FOIA release of the report in the courts. After that we talk about The Report, wherein Adam Driver plays Dan Jones who led the investigation at the direction of Senator Dianne Feinstein. Then we have some happy news about libraries getting funding that was promised to them. Iran's Aggressive Posture, Sanctions Evasion, and 'Fake Reform' — John Batchelor, Bill Roggio, Jonathan Sayeh— Sayeh characterizes Iran as an active predator state, systematically seizing commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz and progressively advancing its nuclear weapons program toward weapons-grade fissile material production. Batchelor documents that despite US sanctions regimes, Iran currently exports more petroleum than during the previous administration, suggesting inadequate enforcement rigor and possible sanctions evasion through intermediary nations. Sayeh characterizes Iranian regime tactics as employing "fake reform," superficially tolerating hijab violations while simultaneously intensifying internal security crackdowns, executions, and suppression of political dissent, creating a facade of liberalization masking deepening authoritarianism. 1870 TEHRAN

I thought I was going to do this as a solo episode but Leon joins at approximately 2:26. Our sincerest apologies that we were not able to do the reading/discussion of Sister Wife tonight! It was a long day of meetings for Leon and I, then he had "team building" activities after :) While we have run out of time today, we will be back at it tomorrow with Sister Wife! In one of the most disturbing developments we've covered on Hidden Killers, the mother at the center of a missing-child case — Ashlee Buzzard — is now a free woman. No charges keeping her inside a jail cell, no requirement to cooperate, no legal mandate to reveal where her daughter is or whether the child is even safe. She walked out the door while the public stood there begging for answers. And she gave them none. This episode digs deep into the legal reality nobody wants to admit: the system isn't failing. It's working exactly as designed — and that's the problem. In the United States, parental rights sit at the top of the legal pyramid. A parent can refuse to answer questions. A parent can withhold a child's location. A parent can avoid welfare checks, shut out investigators, and vanish behind phrases like “I don't have to tell you anything.” Silence isn't a crime. Evasion isn't a crime. Even being the last person to see a missing child isn't automatically a crime. Meanwhile, the child at the center of all of this remains missing. No confirmed sightings. No independent verification of safety. No evidence that she is alive — or that she isn't. And the very structure of the system forces investigators to wait for proof they cannot legally obtain without the cooperation of the one person who refuses to give it. This episode breaks down how this twisted framework came to be, why law enforcement's hands are tied, how mental-health crises go unaddressed until they become catastrophes, and why American child-protection laws continue to overlook the exact situations that need decisive intervention. Because a system that allows a missing child to slip into a legal gray zone — while the parent walks away untouched — isn't just flawed. It's dangerous. It's outdated. And it's time the public understands just how easy it is for a parent to disappear their own child without immediate accountability. If you care about child safety, accountability, and closing the gaps that let tragedies unfold in silence, this is a conversation you cannot miss. #HiddenKillers #TonyBrueski #MissingChildCase #AshleeBuzzard #ChildSafety #LawEnforcement #TrueCrimeNews #ChildProtection #JusticeSystem #TrueCrimeCommunity Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? In an explosive disclosure this week, newly released documents reveal that convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein maintained a remarkably active role as political and media strategist, notably guiding Steve Bannon—former chief strategist to Donald Trump—on messaging, media appearances and international political optics. The records show that even as Epstein's reputation crumbled, he was advising Bannon on how to “play” Europe, seize one-on-one meetings with world leaders and shape narrative around Trump and his team. Epstein wrote: “If you are going to play here, you'll have to spend time, Europe by remote doesn't work…. there are many leaders of countries we can organize for you to have one on ones.Perhaps more unsettling are the exchanges that suggest Epstein used this role to underpin his own bid for influence and image redemption. Former Biden Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre joins to promote her memoir Independent: A Look Inside a Broken White House Outside the Party Lines—and faces pointed questions about contradictions between her praise for Biden, her criticism of Democrats, and her claim of newfound political independence. Asked what makes her truly "independent," she pivots to abstractions about democracy and compassion, refusing to name concrete policy differences or lessons from 2024. Plus: scarcity and abundance—how prosperity breeds complacency, and why measles could again become endemic in America while poorer nations still fight to get vaccines at all. In this episode of Battleground 45, Saul and Patrick delve into the dark history of the ratlines, a system of escape routes used by high-ranking Nazi officials and collaborators to flee Europe after World War II. We explore how these fugitives, including infamous figures like Adolf Eichmann and Klaus Barbie, evaded justice by traveling through a network that stretched from Germany to safe havens in South America and the Middle East. Together they uncover the organisations and individuals, from sympathetic clergy to intelligence agencies, that aided their escape and the enduring legacy of their unpunished crimes. Welcome to Episode 293 of Lucretius Today. This is a podcast dedicated to the poet Lucretius, who wrote "On The Nature of Things," the most complete presentation of Epicurean philosophy left to us from the ancient world. Each week we walk you through the Epicurean texts, and we discuss how Epicurean philosophy can apply to you today. If you find the Epicurean worldview attractive, we invite you to join us in the study of Epicurus at EpicureanFriends.com, where we discuss this and all of our podcast episodes. This week we continue our series covering Cicero's "Tusculan Disputations" from an Epicurean viewpoint. Today we continue in Part 3, which addresses anger, pity, envy, and other strong emotions. Today we'll continue into Section XVI, where we compare Epicurus' views on dealing with grief to those of other schools. https://www.epicureanfriends.com/thread/4649-episode-293-cicero-accuses-epicurus-of-evasion-in-calling-absence-of-pain-a-plea/

A competitor could trigger a federal investigation against your company, just by filing a whistleblower complaint about your imports. In this episode, Michael Volkov explores how the Trump Administration is reshaping the enforcement landscape by linking trade compliance and the False Claims Act (FCA) in unprecedented ways. With “trade and customs fraud, including tariff evasion” now a DOJ national priority, companies engaged in international trade face growing legal and reputational risks. A recent Ninth Circuit ruling has only intensified the stakes. You'll hear him discuss:Why DOJ is combining trade enforcement and FCA cases, and what that means for companies that import goods into the U.S.How “reverse false claims” work in the trade context, and why import misclassification, undervaluation, or incorrect country-of-origin declarations are now high-risk areas.Recent high-dollar settlements - including $45 million in one case - where companies paid the price for customs fraud violations. The significance of the Ninth Circuit's decision in Island Industries v. Sigma Corp., which confirmed DOJ's ability to pursue customs fraud claims under the FCA in federal court. How whistleblowers, including competitors, are using FCA claims as a strategic tool in the marketplace, leading to sealed complaints and increased litigation. What companies should be doing now to evaluate and reinforce their trade compliance programs, from reviewing documentation and broker relationships to training and internal reporting. Why ignoring tariff and duty obligations - or failing to investigate them thoroughly - could be seen as deliberate indifference, exposing companies to both civil and criminal liability.ResourcesMichael Volkov on LinkedIn | TwitterThe Volkov Law Group
This week, John Byrne and Joe McNamara discuss Treasury's decision to postpone the investment advisor AML rule from 2026 to 2028 and reopen the comment process, drawing criticism from anti-corruption groups who warn it sends the wrong signal during the US's ongoing FATF evaluation. The hosts review Chainalysis's midyear crypto crime report showing $2.17 billion already stolen in 2025, with North Korea's $1.5 billion Bybit hack representing the largest single cryptocurrency theft in history. They also examine the newly signed GENIUS Act on stablecoins and its upcoming regulatory requirements. International developments include Russian universities offering Kremlin-backed master's programs in sanctions evasion and the EU's toughest sanctions package in years, which lowers the Russian oil price cap to $48 per barrel. The episode concludes with updates from the Wolfsburg Group on risk-based approaches and previews upcoming webinars on AI in compliance and fraud prevention.
Marc & Kim break down how Democrats and the media are weaponizing the Texas flood tragedy to blame Trump, despite facts pointing elsewhere—Gov. Abbott and even Chris Cuomo push back. Trump's dodging of Epstein questions sparks outrage from the team, with Kim blasting Pam Bondi's backpedaling and the media's cowardice. In Kim on a Whim, religious freedom scores a huge win as the IRS confirms churches can now discuss candidates—Kim calls out spineless pastors while Marc torches leftist hypocrisy in black churches. Finally, a decades-long fight ends in victory as Senator Josh Hawley helps pass RECA, compensating Coldwater Creek victims while exposing government coverups and media Medicaid lies.

What happens when you combine Navy SEAL training techniques, the experience of being kidnapped (on purpose), and overcoming hearing loss? You get the remarkable resilience story of Gina Cassaza! In this inspiring episode of Whinypaluza, host Rebecca Greene welcomes Gina Cassaza, a multifaceted individual whose life journey embodies extraordinary resilience and determination. Gina shares her transformative experiences training with a Navy SEAL and participating in a civilian SERE (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape) course where she was actually paid to be kidnapped! She opens up about her journey of suddenly going deaf in one ear at age 21 and the incredible story of regaining her hearing a decade later. As a children's author, Gina discusses her book "You Really Truly Do Belong" and her nonprofit Empower Lit, both aimed at fostering literacy and self-acceptance in children. Her background as a stand-up comic infuses the conversation with humor and relatability as she delivers powerful insights on mental toughness, self-acceptance, and the importance of perseverance in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges. KEY TAKEAWAYS: ➤ Navy SEAL training taught Gina invaluable lessons about mental toughness that transcend physical capabilities, demonstrating how we can push beyond our perceived limitations in everyday life. ➤ Gina's experience with sudden hearing loss at age 21 and subsequent recovery a decade later illustrates the power of perseverance and the importance of questioning medical "certainties." ➤ Through her children's book "You Really Truly Do Belong," Gina addresses the universal human need for acceptance and belonging, particularly crucial for developing healthy self-esteem in children. ➤ The civilian SERE course (where Gina was "kidnapped") provided unique insights into human resilience and the capacity to remain composed under extreme stress—skills applicable to everyday challenges. ➤ Gina's nonprofit Empower Lit demonstrates how personal challenges can be transformed into meaningful initiatives that create positive change for others, particularly in underserved communities. QUOTES: "The most valuable lesson I learned from training with a Navy SEAL wasn't physical at all—it was discovering the boundless reserves of mental strength we all possess but rarely tap into." "When doctors told me I'd never hear from my left ear again, I accepted it as fact for years. My hearing recovery taught me that even medical certainties should sometimes be questioned, and that the body has remarkable healing capabilities when given the right support." Just like some people fudge the numbers to lower their taxes, some companies do the same when paying tariffs on foreign goods. The federal government is mostly trusting that what's in that shipping container is actually 100 bicycles, and not 500 bicycles. But erratic, rapidly changing trade policy is making it easier to evade tariffs, a customs broker told us. Also in this episode: Car insurance costs dip (but probably won't stay down), a six-figure household income isn't what it used to be, and the U.S. dollar takes a tumble.
“Israel built an ‘AI factory' for war. It unleashed it in Gaza,” laments the Washington Post. “Hospitals Are Reporting More Insurance Denials. Is AI Driving Them?,” reports Newsweek. “AI Raising the Rent? San Francisco Could Be the First City to Ban the Practice,” announces San Francisco's KQED. Within the last few years, and particularly the last few months, we've heard this refrain: AI is the reason for an abuse committed by a corporation, military, or other powerful entity. All of a sudden, the argument goes, the adoption of “faulty” or “overly simplified” AI caused a breakdown of normal operations: spikes in health insurance claims denials, the skyrocketing of consumer prices, the deaths of tens of thousands of civilians. If not for AI, it follows, these industries and militaries, in all likelihood, would implement fairer policies and better killing protocols. We'll admit: the narrative seems compelling at first glance. There are major dangers in incorporating AI into corporate and military procedures. But in these cases, the AI isn't the culprit; the people making the decisions are. UnitedHealthcare would deny claims regardless of the tools at its disposal. Landlords would raise rents with or without automated software. The IDF would kill civilians no matter what technology was, or wasn't, available to do so. So why do we keep hearing that AI is the problem? What's the point of this frame and why is it becoming so common as a responsibility-avoidance framing? On today's episode, we'll dissect the genre of “investigative” reporting on the dangers of AI, examining how it serves as a limited hangout, offering controlled criticism while ultimately shifting responsibility toward faceless technologies and away from powerful people. Later on the show, we'll be speaking with Steven Renderos, Executive Director of MediaJustice, a national racial justice organization that advances the media and technology rights of people of color. He is the creator and co-host, with the great Brandi Collins-Dexter, Bring Receipts, a politics and pop culture podcast and is executive producer of Revolutionary Spirits, a 4-part audio series on the life and martyrdom of Mexican revolutionary leader Francisco Madero.
