BUFFALO, NY – June 2, 2026 – A new #research paper was #published in Volume 17 of Oncotarget on May 20, 2026, titled “Microenvironmental CTHRC1 has a pro-tumorigenic role in colorectal cancer.” The study was led by first author Haylee Duval from the Center for Molecular Medicine at the MaineHealth Institute for Research and the Graduate School of Biomedical Science and Engineering at the University of Maine. The study's corresponding authors were Sergey Ryzhov, Volkhard Lindner, and Michaela R. Reagan, who are affiliated with the Center for Molecular Medicine at the MaineHealth Institute for Research, the Graduate School of Biomedical Science and Engineering at the University of Maine, and Tufts University School of Medicine. Colorectal cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide. While much research has focused on cancer cells themselves, growing evidence suggests that the tumor microenvironment—the network of surrounding stromal cells, immune cells, and extracellular components—plays a critical role in determining how tumors grow and spread. In this study, researchers investigated collagen triple helix repeat containing 1 (CTHRC1), a secreted protein previously associated with poor outcomes in several cancer types. Although CTHRC1 is frequently detected in tumor-associated stroma, its precise role within the colorectal cancer microenvironment has remained unclear. To address this question, the team used a genetically engineered mouse model lacking CTHRC1 and compared tumor development with that of normal mice after colorectal cancer cells were introduced. The results consistently showed that the absence of host-derived CTHRC1 significantly reduced tumor growth. Across three independent experimental cohorts, mice lacking CTHRC1 developed substantially smaller tumors than their normal counterparts. In addition, survival improved markedly. The median survival of mice with normal CTHRC1 expression was 28 days after tumor inoculation, compared with 69 days in CTHRC1-deficient mice. The researchers also found evidence that CTHRC1 influences anti-tumor immunity. Mice lacking CTHRC1 had higher percentages of CD3-positive T cells in both tumors and spleens, suggesting a more active immune response against cancer. At the same time, they exhibited reduced levels of certain myeloid immune cells associated with immune suppression. Importantly, the investigators confirmed that the colorectal cancer cells themselves did not produce detectable CTHRC1. Instead, the protein was found primarily in fibroblasts and other stromal components surrounding the tumor. This finding indicates that the tumor-promoting effects originated from the tumor microenvironment rather than from the cancer cells directly. Histological analyses further revealed striking differences in tumor structure. Tumors from CTHRC1-deficient mice contained fewer cells and showed evidence of regression, while tumors in normal mice remained densely cellular and continued to expand. Martin has faced criticism over the course of his tenure for reneging on his promise to release an autopsy on the 2024 presidential campaign and for his decidedly lackluster fundraising efforts. The DNC has reportedly “spent more money than it has raised” and “has more debt than cash on hand,” while the Republican National Committee enjoys a “roughly seven-to-one money advantage.” According to this report, high-level DNC members are now privately discussing ousting Martin, only tabling these discussions “after members failed to identify an alternative candidate willing to step into the role.” Martin's failures have even led Democrats to openly wonder “whether the 178-year-old committee should even exist anymore.” Martin was elected DNC Chair last year, beating out Wisconsin Democratic Party chair Ben Wikler, who helped rebuild the party and raise tremendous amounts of money in that critical swing state.* Speaking of money in politics, this week POLITICO released a damning report on End Citizens United, the good-government focused 501(c)(4) that has in past years been a “fundraising behemoth” but has now faded nearly into complete irrelevancy. The issues highlighted in this piece will be familiar to many who have worked in this world. Despite raising $14.8 million, the group's PAC arm is burning through the money more quickly than it can raise it, having just $324,000 on hand at the end of March. What are they spending the money on? According to POLITICO, about $650,000 has gone to candidates and party groups and about the same amount has been bundled. Meanwhile, payments to fundraising firms have eaten up an astonishing $5.3 million. This is just another case of Democratic Party aligned consulting firms run amok and growing fat off of small dollar donations.* Another disappointing story comes to us from the Teamsters. According to Bloomberg, the union has forfeited a hard-won union foothold – the first ever unionized Chipotle – following three years of battling the company and failing to secure a contract. A Teamsters local president said in an email to the National Labor Relations Board that the union “officially withdraws and disclaims interest” at the Lansing, Michigan location. Legally speaking, this means the company will no longer be “required to recognize or negotiate with the union.” The employees of this location voted to unionize in 2022 by a margin of 11-to-3. Chipotle corporate has been decried for seeking to bust this union, with Biden NLRB General Counsel Jennifer Abruzzo accusing them of employing illegal anti-union tactics like “withholding raises from the store's staff and telling workers that the union was keeping their pay frozen…[and punishing] a pro-union employee to discourage activism.” However, it was the Teamsters themselves who ultimately gave up, paving the way for the demise of the workers' heroic stand against corporate power. As the saying goes, with friends like these.* In more positive political news, during the Washington DC mayoral debate last week, the Washington Post reports democratic socialist mayoral hopeful Janeese Lewis George seemed to endorse the idea of opening municipal grocery stores in DC food deserts, including the impoverished and majority Black Wards 7 and 8. Asked about this topic, Councilmember Lewis George committed to bringing at least one more grocery store to Ward 7 and at least two more to Ward 8, noting that she would seek to shore up investor confidence with public dollars. If private options do not materialize however, she vowed that “we will work towards” a publicly-owned store. Municipally-owned grocery stores were a much publicized part of the Zohran Mamdani campaign platform and, if Lewis George is elected, his success or failure in carrying out that pledge is sure to impact her decision making on this issue.* Meanwhile, in media news, the New York Times reports Lupa Systems – the private holding company representing the interests of James Murdoch, son of conservative media mogul Rupert Murdoch – is “in talks to acquire major parts of Vox Media.” Vox, founded in the 2010s by journalists Ezra Klein, Matt Yglesias, and Melissa Bell, now owns major media properties including New York magazine, the Verge, Eater and a podcast network featuring Kara Swisher and others. Murdoch, through Lupa, owns a “majority stake in Tribeca Enterprises, the parent company of the Tribeca Film Festival.” Additionally, the Times notes that Quadrivium, the foundation founded by Mr. Murdoch and his wife, Kathryn, has financial interests in “The 19th, a nonprofit newsroom focused on gender and politics, and The Bulwark, a so-called ‘Never Trump' digital media company.” James Murdoch, along with his sister Elisabeth, are seen as far more liberal than the Murdoch patriarch and his other son, Lachlan, who together successfully ousted the other family members from control of the family trust in a recent legal battle.* Turning to international news, yet another deadlocked presidential election in Peru is looming. A new Ipsos poll, taken near the end of April, shows an exact 50-50 split between the two candidates in the runoff: the left-wing member of Congress Roberto Sánchez and Keiko Fujimori, daughter of former Peruvian dictator Alberto Fujimori. This election was always going to be close – Peruvian politics have been deadlocked for years, resulting in ultra-narrow presidential victories frequently followed by impeachments. Fujimori has been a runoff candidate in every presidential election going back to 2011, losing each by extremely narrow margins. Most recently, she lost to Pedro Castillo by a margin of 50.13% to 49.87% in 2021. Castillo however was thwarted by, and ultimately ousted by, the Congress. The runoff will be held on June 7th.* In India, the Left suffered catastrophic defeats in this week's state elections, Al Jazeera reports. The state of Kerala – “the first in the world to have a democratically elected communist government” and “the last state in India where communists were in power” – will now be led by the United Democratic Front, a coalition headed by the Congress party, which won over 100 out of 140 seats. The Left bloc will likely capture around 35 seats. Beyond Kerala however, the Left has seen setbacks throughout the country, with no state now being ruled by the Left for the first time since 1977 and the national parliamentary Left bloc declining from 62 in the 2004 election to just eight seats today. Different factors are cited for the general decline of the Left in India, including an inability to adapt Marxist analysis to non class-related issues in the country, such as caste and gender, as well as the decline of industrial trade unions and a general trend towards Right-wing Hindu nationalism. Hopefully, the Left will take this electoral rout as an opportunity to rebuild itself into a viable force for 21st century Indian politics.* Turning to East Asia, the Financial Times reports North Korea has subtly revised its constitution to drop references to reunification of the two Koreas. Specifically, the new text reads “the territory of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea includes the territory bordering the People's Republic of China and the Russian Federation to the north and the Republic of Korea to the south, and the territorial sea and airspace established on it”. In acknowledging the existence of the Republic of Korea, more commonly known as South Korea, experts see a move away from the long-held North Korean contention that the peninsula is a single country illegally partitioned. The revision was “disclosed by an academic at a press conference hosted by the South Korean Ministry of Unification on Wednesday.” Though this article notes that “North Korea has not made any comment on the revised constitution and the source of the text revealed by the unification ministry was not disclosed,” it highlights that Kim Jong-un has increasingly moved in this direction in recent years, renaming Tongil (“reunification”) metro station in Pyongyang and dismantling an Arch of Reunification monument.* Our last two stories have to do with the People's Republic of China. First, Reuters reports China's Commerce Ministry has issued an injunction to “block U.S. ​sanctions imposed on five Chinese refiners accused ‌of buying Iranian oil.” Hengli Petrochemical, one of the five small “teapot” refineries primarily located in China's Shandong province, was slapped with sanctions last month, when the Trump administration accused the company of purchasing billions ​of dollars in Iranian oil. The other four have been sanctioned since last year. However, the Ministry now argues that the sanctions violate “international law and ‌the ⁠basic norms of international relations,” and with the injunction in place, “the United States cannot recognize, ​implement, or comply ​with the ⁠sanctions imposed on the aforementioned five Chinese companies.” This is perhaps the most significant challenge to the American-led international sanctions regime in decades and whatever reaction issues from the U.S. will surely inform other states on just how far they can go in flouting such sanctions.* Finally, in a stunning legal decision, Fortune reports Chinese courts have ruled that “companies cannot terminate employees just to replace them with artificial intelligence systems.” The case in question hinged on whether a tech firm in eastern China had acted illegally when firing one of its workers, a “quality assurance professional…identified only as Zhou” after he “refused to take a demotion” and a 40% pay cut, when his job was automated by AI. The court found that the termination did not meet established standards, such as business downsizing or operational difficulties, and the court separately stated that “Companies cannot unilaterally lay off employees or cut salaries due to technological progress.” This stunning legal victory for workers in the face of challenges by technology is bittersweet – heartening in that it's happening at all, yet at the same time depressing because it is almost impossible to imagine an equivalent worker protection regime being implemented in the United States.This has been Francesco DeSantis, with In Case You Haven't Heard. In an explosive disclosure this week, newly released documents reveal that convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein maintained a remarkably active role as political and media strategist, notably guiding Steve Bannon—former chief strategist to Donald Trump—on messaging, media appearances and international political optics. The records show that even as Epstein's reputation crumbled, he was advising Bannon on how to “play” Europe, seize one-on-one meetings with world leaders and shape narrative around Trump and his team. Epstein wrote: “If you are going to play here, you'll have to spend time, Europe by remote doesn't work…. there are many leaders of countries we can organize for you to have one on ones.Perhaps more unsettling are the exchanges that suggest Epstein used this role to underpin his own bid for influence and image redemption. This helps you to see that certain Empires can be better suited for particular victory strategies. Playing Civilization V, Part 11 The Players By the time you got to the last expansion and all of the DLC, there are 43 possible Empires you can play as. But they are not all alike. Each Empire has a particular Leader, a Unique Ability, and a Unique Unit. In addition most of them have some kind of Starting Bias, and many have a Unique Building or a Unique Improvement. Understanding how to make use of these is important to your strategy. If you let random chance assign you to an Empire, you need to know what kind of strategy will work with that Empire. And if you want to pursue a particular strategy you will want to know how to pick an appropriate Empire to fit strategy. There is a chart that lists all 43 Empires with all of their parameters at the Civilization Fandom Wiki and you might want to bookmark that page for future reference. Also, you want to know what to expect concerning your opponents in a game. Leader You don't have a choice of leaders. When you choose a particular Empire you get the Leader that comes with it. But these leaders are distinct in various ways. To see what I mean, go to the Leader page for one by clicking on the link under the Leader picture. You will see a long list of AI Traits. These describe in numerical terms how competitive the Leader is various ways, how prone to war, which kinds of units it will build, and so on. It is a long list, so your eyes may glaze over, but the significance is that it may give you some insight if this Leader is one of your opponents in a game. This list is how the AI is programmed. There is also more approachable summary under Personality and Behavior, and here is what it says about Pedro II of Brazil: “Pedro will most commonly try for a cultural victory. If he pursues a different victory condition, he is likely to choose a diplomatic one over a scientific or domination victory. Pedro is exceptionally friendly and loyal, and will readily befriend anyone but the most warlike leaders. He is more willing to denounce than to wage war himself, but will maintain a defensive militia comprised of a variety of units. He also has a habit of building a fairly large navy. Fittingly, Pedro's highest priority is the Happiness of his people, followed by the development of his lands and Culture. He will not claim a large territory, but his cities will be highly populated and the land and water around them will be full of improvements. He will sometimes try to build wonders that enhance his Culture and Tourism output. Pedro is friendly toward city-states in his sphere of influence and will often pledge to protect them. He will hardly ever attack or bully them.” Now, the point is that this describes your AI opponent. If you choose to play as Pedro II of Brazil, you can make entirely different decisions from what the AI would do Starting Bias Each Empire will spawn on the map in ways that reflect their Starting Bias, if any. Some Empires (e.g. China, France, etc.) have no Starting Bias at all, which means they can spawn anywhere on the map, though there is programming to ensure that the location is not a disaster, like all Tundra and Ice, or the middle of the ocean. So it will certainly be playable. Still some players like to try 2,3, or 4 times to spawn to see if they can get a good place to start.. For the Empires with a Starting Bias, it can be either positive or negative. For example, the Mongolian Empire has a bias towards starting on plains, which makes sense historically since they came from the plains of Central Asia. The Russian Empire has a bias to start in Tundra, which again seems to fit. The Songhai Empire has a negative Starting Bias, which is to avoid Tundra. The Songhai Empire historically was an empire in sub-Saharan Africa, so this makes sense. And the Siamese Empire avoids Forests. The Roman and Shoshone Empires have no Starting Bias at all, so they could spawn anywhere. This Starting Bias will apply to whichever Empire you choose to play, so if you would prefer to not play with a lot of Tundra, you would de well to not choose Russia. But Russia can do more with Tundra than some other Empire might, so it all balances out. Unique Ability Generally speaking each Empire will have a Unique Ability. For example, the Austrian Empire has the Unique Ability called Diplomatic Marriage, which allows them to spend Gold to annex or puppet any City-State that they have been allied to for at least 5 turns. If the City-State is annexed, it becomes part of the Austrian Empire, but if it is puppeted the City-State technically remains separate but is under the control in some ways of the Austrian Empire. India has a Unique Ability called Population Growth. This doubles the unhappiness caused by more cities, but reduces by 50% the unhappiness caused by increased population. So if you were playing India it is even more important to build Tall rather than Wide. Unique Units Every Empire has at least one, and sometimes two Unique Units. These units replace a normal unit, but are a little better in some respect. They are worth having, but some are more useful than others. And a key factor is when they are available to you. For example, the Celtic Empire gets the Pictish Warrior, which replaces the Spearman. Since the Spearman is generally the first unit you learn to build, it comes very early in the game. So if you were interested in a strategy of early warfare, this might matter to you. The Pictish Warrior is actually weaker than the Spearman in one respect, though, in that it gets no bonus against mounted units. So if you are the Celts, and you are facing the Mongols, you will have a problem. But the Pictish Warrior can pillage without any movement cost. Normally when you use a unit to pillage it ends your turn, but the Pictish Warrior could pillage and then move if it still had movement left. And the Pictish Warrior also has the Foreign Lands Bonus, which gives it a 20% bonus when fighting outside of Celtic territory. And finally the Pictish Warrior gets a Faith bonus when it kills an enemy unit, equal to 50% of the killed unit's strength. The American Empire is one that has 2 Unique Units. One is the B-17 bomber, which replaces the regular Bomber. It comes with 2 promotions (Siege I, and Evasion), and is slightly stronger (70 vs. 65). The problem with this is that it comes so late in the game that it is hard to see what good it will do you. If you are pursuing a Domination strategy you should have already gone most of the way to conquering the world before you actually get the B17. The other Unique Unit the Americans get is the Minuteman, which replaces the Musketman. It comes with a Drill I Promotion, ignores Terrain restrictions, and earns points towards a Golden Age. This is more useful than the B17, but not useful enough to push you towards a Domination victory. But since you need good units for any strategy, if only for defense, it is worth having. Personally, if I was playing as the Americans I would rather go for a Science victory. Unique Buildings/Improvements The last parameter for these Empires is the possible Unique Building or Unique Improvement. Some Empires, such as the Byzantines or the Japanese, do not have one, but they can be useful. For example, the Portuguese Empire has a unique building called the Feitoria which has the interesting property of being built outside of Portugal's territory. The Feitoria, which becomes available once you discover Navigation, can be built in the territory of a Coastal City-State on a Coastal Land tile that has no resources on it. It has three properties: Portugal gets one copy of each Luxury Resource the City-State has. This is great for either increasing Happiness or as something that can be traded with other Empires. +50% defensive strength for any combat units on the tile. Pillaging the Freitoria constitutes an Act of War against Portugal, which means Portugal gets no penalties for going to war. Another example is the Dutch Polder, which can be built on any Marsh or Flood Plain tile. It gives +3 Food, and once you discover Economics it will also yield +1 Production and +1 Gold. Summary Studying the chart of the Empires can help you in picking strategies for the Empire you are playing, or help you to pick an Empire that is well suited to the strategy you want to try. And knowing how the AI is programmed for other Empires helps you to know what to expect in your game. But here are some suggestions. Note that you can win with any Civ, but these are ones that lend themselves to a particular strategy. That said, I usually let the game give me a random choice and then formulate my strategy when I see what I get. By David Stephen The first admission, regarding solving social media addiction and harm for users, especially teens, is that digital is generally harder to enforce than the physical. This is, in part, evident where, to enforce some barriers in digital, physical [like IDs] maybe necessary. It is not very useful to directly compare safeguards for social media with physical facilities, like seatbelts, which are easier to detect by enforcement as well as have menacing alarms and alerts implemented. Can Brain Science Solve Social Media Addiction? Evasion and bypass are more common with digital that even in some strict cases, for public platforms, access is possible for those who should not see it. This means that while social media companies are expected to do better, there is also the chance to put forward potent solutions that would ensure that people are not just restricted, but they also do not want it. Simply, whatever social media is that make users swarm it can be said to do something for people, or that people want it. So, how can people not want it, or want it less? This was a method with cigarettes, where packs were suffused with grim images of [health and life] losses, such that even as some people ignored it, it made a mind dent for some, that they were never unaware of what is probable, in the side-effects of it. While this may not work for social media, because it is static, it indicates that a means to have it repelled will be useful to ensure people do not have their minds become casualties of social media, especially during formative years. For example, AI chatbots have mild and static messages, but they have been unable to make any difference for those that leapt in to AI delusion and AI psychosis. There is a recent [February 13, 2026] guest essay in The New York Times, We're All in a Throuple With A.I., stating that, "but a polite suggestion after three hours of A.I. conversation is not enough. Why not play video testimonials from people whose human relationships withered after years of nonstop chat with bots?" While it is possible that this might work, it might be skipped or the people assume they won't fall the same way, while believing others have a problem. This leaves the option to the mind. Like a possible model of how the human mind works, to see corresponding relays and vulnerabilities [conceptually, at minimum]. Meta and YouTube Lawsuit There is a new [February 18, 2026] report on CNN, Meta's Zuckerberg testifies about social media's effects on children in landmark trial, stating that, "Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg was grilled Wednesday about whether his company intentionally designed Instagram to be addictive, in front of the young woman accusing Meta and YouTube of hooking her as a child and damaging her mental health." "But Lanier showed an internal document from 2015 that estimated over 4 million Instagram users were under 13, which it said represented "30% of all 10-12 year olds in the US." Lanier has said the now-20-year-old plaintiff, Kaley, began using Instagram at age 9." "Lanier pointed out that it wasn't until December 2019 that Instagram began asking new users to input a birthdate when signing up; previously, it just asked them to confirm they were above the age of 13. Instagram in August 2021 started asking existing users to provide a birthdate if they hadn't done so previously, as part of a safety push for young people." "In another tense exchange, Lanier grilled Zuckerberg over Instagram's decision to allow "beauty" filters that manipulate a user's face to make it appear they're wearing makeup or have had facial surgery. Meta consulted with 18 experts that found such filters can cause harm, Lanier said." Breaking down the Tepe murder case. Vascular surgeon Michael McKee, 39, is charged with two counts of premeditated aggravated murder in the shooting deaths of his ex-wife Monique Tepe and her husband Spencer Tepe in Columbus, Ohio on December 30th, 2025. Their two young children — ages one and four — were found unharmed in the home.McKee and Monique divorced in 2017 after a seven-month marriage. Family members describe the relationship as emotionally abusive, with death threats and lasting psychological damage. Monique's brother-in-law Rob Misleh told reporters she was "terrified" of McKee for years and "would talk quite often about how much he messed with her mental health."In the months before the murders, McKee was actively evading medical malpractice lawsuits in Nevada. Attorney Dan Laird documented nine failed attempts to serve him — fake addresses, a fax machine phone number, and colleagues who said he'd "just disappeared." His Nevada license had expired in June 2025. Meanwhile, Monique had remarried, had two children, and just celebrated her fifth anniversary with Spencer.Police tracked McKee through neighborhood surveillance and linked a firearm from his Chicago residence to shell casings at the scene. He was arrested at a Chick-fil-A in Rockford, Illinois and waived extradition. He plans to plead not guilty. Columbus Police Chief Elaine Bryant called it a "domestic violence-related attack." In a combative letter to Republican Rep. James Comer, former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton rejected congressional subpoenas tied to the Jeffrey Epstein investigation, dismissing the Oversight Committee's effort as a “partisan” attack rather than a bona fide search for truth.
