Today we're joined by indie filmmaker and casting director David Guglielmo, who recently wrapped his latest film, Love Bomb. David shares his journey of directing a script written specifically for him by friend and screenwriter Kathy Charles. We explore the creative challenges of transforming an erotic thriller into a dark comedy with shades of Scorsese's After Hours, and how he crafted surreal, Lynchian tones to set the film apart.David also dives into the real-world setbacks he faced on set, from revoked permits to floods, and how quick thinking and flexibility helped keep the production afloat. With insights on casting, creating a cohesive tone, and making the most of ultra-low budgets, David gives us a masterclass on indie filmmaking survival. This is David's second time on the show so if you want more of his origin story be sure and check out Episode 11.Here are some key takeaways from this conversation with David Guglielmo.Flexibility on Set is Crucial:David emphasized the importance of adaptability because he was forced to embody this to an extreme degree. When a neighbor caused their permit to be revoked, the production team had to pivot from a night shoot to a day shoot. Instead of panicking, David calmly rewrote scenes and embraced the changes, which ultimately added an interesting surreal vibe to the film. David has been on a lot of sets and faced a lot of setbacks, so his adaptability is very fluid—to the point where not only does he roll with the punches, but he also finds ways to make the setbacks work in his favor. This is like black belt-level directing. Best laid plans can come crashing down at any moment, which is why it's critical to not only be resilient in the face of obstacles but to embrace them.Stay Tuned In:David noted that when directing, it's important to remain tuned into the frequency of the project. This may sound metaphysical, but well-crafted movies have a specific frequency—whether you want to call it a tone, a spirit, or an energy, it's foundational to the movie. As you go through the inevitable setbacks and sacrifices that come with filmmaking, it's critical to remain tuned into that frequency because it can guide your decisions in favor of the movie. David also recommends making films that reflect your distinct sensibilities and experiences rather than chasing trends or formulas.Invest in Crew Happiness:Having made several ultra-low-budget films, when asked where filmmakers can afford to cut costs and where they should invest, David stresses that the well-being of the crew should never be compromised. A happy, motivated crew can make a significant difference in the film's final outcome and your overall experience directing. The key to this is building a strong sense of camaraderie on set, which starts with transparency: letting the crew know exactly what they're signing up for and setting realistic expectations from the jump. By doing so, you attract team members who are passionate about the project rather than just in it for the paycheck. David also believes in giving less experienced but talented crew members their first major opportunities, creating a collective enthusiasm and a willingness to go the extra mile.Show NotesMovies & InspirationsLove Bomb (David Guglielmo's latest film)Castle Freak (remake, written by Kathy Charles)Jacob's WifeAfter HoursGone GirlThe Hand That Rocks the CradleDressed to KillBlow OutBody DoubleDeath ProofIt FollowsUnder the Silver LakeBooksCatching the Big Fish by David...

We are joined by Ricky from The Night Club Podcast as we delve into the eerie depths of "Castle Freak" (1995), a low-budget horror gem that's equal parts #shocking and #tragic. Directed by Stuart Gordon, known for his cult classics like "Re-Animator," this film takes viewers on a dark journey into the heart of a castle haunted by secrets. At first glance, "Castle Freak" may seem like just another shock-fest, with its gruesome special effects and unsettling imagery. And yes, the film certainly doesn't shy away from delivering its fair share of gore and scares. But beneath its shocking exterior lies a tale of #gothic horror that's as tragic as it is terrifying. The story follows the Reilly family—John, Susan, and their blind daughter Rebecca—as they inherit a castle in Italy, only to discover that it hides a dark secret: the tortured soul of Giorgio Orsino, the disfigured son of the castle's previous owner. As the family unravels the castle's grisly past, they find themselves ensnared in a deadly game of cat and mouse with Giorgio, whose thirst for revenge knows no bounds. While "Castle Freak" may not be everyone's cup of tea, especially those who prefer their horror with a side of subtlety, it's undeniable that the film packs a punch. Sure, it goes for shock value at times, but at its core, it's a tragic and gothic tale that harkens back to classic horror of yesteryear. So, if you're a fan of atmospheric storytelling, chilling suspense, and a healthy dose of gore, "Castle Freak" just might be right up your alley. HMSG Interview Dennis Paoli - "Suitable Flesh"DENNIS PAOLI achieved his greatest enduring cult popularity by penning the wickedly witty scripts for two superior 80s H.P. Lovecraft adaptations directed by noted horror genre icon Stuart Gordon: the terrific "Re-Animator" and its equally excellent follow-up "From Beyond." Paoli and Gordon first crossed paths working for the experimental Organic Theater in Chicago. Besides those two films, Paoli has also written "The Pit and the Pendulum," "Castle Freak," "Dagon" and the "Masters of Horror" episodes "H.P. Lovecraft's Dreams in the Witch-House" and "The Black Cat" for Gordon. Paoli has done several screenplays for prolific low-budget movie producer Charles Band: a segment of the horror anthology "Pulse Pounders," "Spellcaster," "Meridian," and "Ghoulies II." He collaborated with Larry Cohen and Nicholas St. John on the script for Abel Ferrara's supremely creepy and underrated sci-fi/horror winner "Body Snatchers." In addition to those credits, Paoli wrote the gruesome "The Dentist" for Brian Yuzna. Outside of writing screenplays, Dennis Paoli has a regular day job as a Writing Instructor and Coordinator of the Hunter College Writing Center at Hunter College in New York. He's especially knowledgeable on Irish literature and has taught a course on Gothic fiction. We got a chance to talk about his new film SUITABLE FLESH (2023). Starring & Produced by Barbara Crampton. The spirit of Stuart Gordon lives on with a new Lovecraftian inspired tale directed by Joe Lynch. An unconventional, and unethical patient & doctor affair may actually be the result of an ancient supernatural curse! We hope you enjoy this fresh interview!Support the show

PUBLIC VERSION. Screenwriter Dennis Paoli (RE-ANIMATOR, FROM BEYOND, CASTLE FREAK, DAGON, BODY SNATCHERS) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss his incredible career. From fatefully meeting the great Stuart Gordon all the way back in High School and discovering just how much their artistic sensibilities overlapped… to his theater work as part of “The Human Race” satire group touring coffee houses in Chicago… to how performing “naked theater” wound up getting Stuart Gordon thrown in jail… to how producer Charles Band helped launch his, Stuart's, and so many other's careers… to how 1995's CASTLE FREAK was truly a “labor of lust”… to the method behind his madness in tackling adaptations of H.P. Lovecraft's work and how he separates the art from such a controversial and complicated artist… to his many years teaching Gothic literature… to working with our own Joe Lynch on their latest feature SUITABLE FLESH (now in theaters and on-demand!)… Dennis pulls the curtain back on his long screenwriting career. Dr. Arwen provides “Hollywood Therapy” for an industry professional who's at his breaking point with having to “give them what they want,” Joe has a wicked bad accident, and Adam goes behind the (smelly) scenes of this year's ArieScope Halloween short HALLOWEEN SOCKS.

1954's Sleep, My Love was an early directorial effort from German born emigre Douglas Sirk. Sirk would later become recognized as an auteur - by, of course, the French - for his work with melodramas (Magnificent Obsession, All That Heaven Allows). Sleep, My Love, starring Claudette Colbert, Robert Cummings, Don Ameche and Hazel Brooks, was his attempt at a domestic thriller. Dan and Vicky discuss the gaslighting noir along with alot of recently seen including A Haunting in Venice, Talk to Me, The Wrath of Becky, Mafia Mama, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, 1995's Castle Freak, and Psycho: The Lost Tapes of Ed Gein. It is Full Moon April here on Slashers Podcast where your favorite goons will review a different Full Moon Entertainment flick each week. We're kicking it off with 2005's The Gingerdead Man starring Gary Busey. The film follows an evil gingerbread man possessed by a psycho killer (Busey) who terrorizes people at a bakery. In the episode we discuss Charles Band, the founder of Full Moon, and the history of this treasured B-Movie, direct-to-vhs production company, most famous for Castle Freak, the Puppet Master series, and Trancers. We also get into some new horror media, namely Blood and Honey, we talk about the pros and cons of all of us living in either Florida or Texas (mostly cons). Be sure to stick around at the end of the episode to hear it. Let us know your favorite Full Moon Flicks in the comments! In Stuart Gordon's catalog of H.P. Lovecraft adaptations, Castle Freak doesn't get the love and attention that others (most notably Re-Animator, From Beyond) do. Does that mean it isn't any good? Join us as we explore this mid-90s, straight-to-VHS splatter film, produced and distributed by independent pioneers Full Moon Features. Plus, we discuss the 2020 remake, Gordon's legacy as a creator, and reading H.P. Lovecraft before it was cool (and later became very uncool). It's probably got our most tangents per a single episode, but there was a lot to unpack. And we had fun doing it.

This movie came out in 1995 but looks like it was shot in 1975. Get ready for even more Buffalo Bill impressions. If we ever decided to cover Memento we would just get drunk and confused. Surprisingly, we didn't go overboard with the Terry Maitland jokes. How are they not smelling this freak from like a mile away? We talk about so many things that are Castle Freak adjacent. This freak is really bad at oral sex. We think the Momma from Barbarian and the freak would make a cute couple. John is the worst father ever. Listen to the end to hear an impromptu (Bite Sized) Rocky lV episode.follow us on Twitter @CinemaPoisoncontact us at cinemapoisonpodcast @gmail.com
Horror Director Legend vs Horror SFX Icon. Who did it better? The original is a huge cult classic, and for good reason. It is a master class in excellent horror film making without losing the emotional elements so many 80's/90's horror is missing. On the other hand, Tate's new vision and polished cinematography in the remake set up a fun ride with solid acting. It is surprisingly good, although it never really got the credit it deserved.
Castle Freak (1995) Castle Freak is a 1995 American direct-to-video horror film directed by Stuart Gordon. The film stars Jeffrey Combs as John Reilly, an American recovering alcoholic who inherits an Italian castle when a distant relative passes away. John travels to Italy with his estranged wife Susan (Barbara Crampton) and blind daughter Rebecca (Jessica Dollarhide). The three plan to stay at the castle, but unbeknownst to them, a freakish monster locked away in the basement of the castle is about to escape and commit a series of murders. The police place John as the prime suspect, leading him to confront his alcoholism, fight the demon and prove himself innocent. Castle Freak went into production in 1994 after Gordon noticed art for the film in producer Charles Band's office. Gordon agreed to develop the film on Band's condition that the film take place in a castle, contain a freak, and would be shot on a very low budget. Gordon obliged as he would be able to cast who he wanted in the film and would get the final cut. The film was shot in 1994 in a castle owned by Band in Italy, where Gordon had previously shot The Pit and the Pendulum. Castle Freak (2020) Castle Freak is a 2020 American direct-to-video horror film that was directed by Tate Steinsiek. It has been billed as a reboot of the 1995 Stuart Gordon film by the same name, which is a loose adaptation of the stories "The Outsider" and "The Dunwich Horror" by H.P. Lovecraft. Jeffrey Combs. has he ever disappointed us o this show? Re-Animator, Castle Freak, and to our suprise, this unique saw ripoff. Combs is a man obsessed with the idea of choice, and how flexible morals can be for the right price. We love him, and this movie while… squicky at times, has some charming actors besides Mr Combs.
