Join us for today's engaging episode of the Faculty Factory Podcast, featuring our returning guest, Brian Clyne, MD, MHL. In this episode, we explore key guidance for early-career physicians and faculty in academic medicine through the lens of a coach. Dr. Clyne is a Professor of Emergency Medicine at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University where he also serves as Vice Chair for Education. It is often a complex journey we face when transitioning from medical training to clinical practice, with some of those unique challenges explored throughout this conversation. Coaching, Self-Awareness, Values, and Goals                                                                                                 Dr. Clyne highlighted a significant trend in the opening moments of the interview: an increasing number of early-career physicians are turning to coaching to navigate feelings of uncertainty and redefine their professional identities outside the structured milestones of medical education. This reflects the confusion many feel as they shift from a system with clear guidance to one where they must carve their own paths and establish internal definitions of success. Self-awareness and understanding one's personal values are essential throughout your career, but this is increasingly true during times of transition or uncertainty. Coaching facilitates critical thought and assists individuals in exploring their goals and underlying values, leading to a greater sense of purpose and fulfillment. Keep the Conversation Going You can listen to Dr. Clyne's previous visit with us here at the Faculty Factory Podcast, as he joined us for episode no. 191, entitled 'Finding Focus, Collaborators, and Mentors for Accelerating Scholarly Productivity': https://facultyfactory.org/brian-clyne/.  You can contact Dr. Clyne here: brian.clyne@brownphysicians.org and the Faculty Factory website is here: https://facultyfactory.org/

SynopsisComposers have always been fascinated by the sea. If you're curious, Spotify offers a playlist of 50 sea-inspired classical works from composers ranging from Mendelssohn to Debussy to Takemitsu. On today's date in 2012, conductor Riccardo Muti and the Chicago Symphony premiered a new sea-inspired work by London-born composer Anna Clyne, who was then the orchestra's composer-in-residence. Clyne's piece, Night Ferry, was "music of voyages, from stormy darkness to enchanted worlds,” as she described. “It is music of the conjurer and setter of tides, the guide through the ungovernable and dangerous.”The Chicago Symphony took Night Ferry on tour that year, with Pacific Coast stops in San Francisco and San Diego, and also, perhaps for thematic contrast, to Palm Desert, California, for good measure.Clyne is bit of a traveler herself. She studied music formally at the University of Edinburgh, then at the Manhattan School of Music. In addition to being the composer-in-residence in Chicago, she has held similar positions with Orchestre National d'Île-de-France, the Baltimore Symphony, the Berkeley Symphony and, coming full circle, the Edinburgh-based Scottish Chamber Orchestra.Music Played in Today's ProgramAnna Clyne (b. 1980): Night Ferry; Chicago Symphony; Richardo Muti, cond. Join me for the career reflections of Christine Clyne-Spraker, former co-CEO, board member and author. Her dream was to become a civil engineer, but after receiving a “C” in calculus she panics and switches her major to advertising. A bold move after college takes her to California where she's recruited by Enterprise Rent-A-Car into their management and sales training program. Which turns out to be a great fit, setting her up with skills she'll leverage throughout her career. She's drawn back to Colorado and at the urging of her dad, starts exploring the pharmaceutical industry which leads her into selling medical and surgical devices. Through her intense preparation and training, she becomes a trusted advisor in the industry. This is also where she meets her business partner. What's served Christine best? Three things: optimism, tenacity and naiveite. She credits her naiveite to not always knowing what she was getting into, she just jumps in; her optimism for knowing that things will work out for the best no matter what; and her tenacity to get through anything. It's a recipe that's worked well for her! Christine's words of wisdom are words from her dad: “A job worth doing is worth doing well.”

As busy as composer Anna Clyne is this season — fulfilling commissions for new works and serving as a resident artist with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic, and the Symphony Orchestra of Castilla y León — music accounts for a fraction of her artistic inspiration. That's because the Grammy-nominated British composer thrives on incorporating many creative disciplines outside of music into her work. Reviewing a roster of her recent engagements, you'll find critically acclaimed collaborations with visual artist Josh Dorman, filmmaker Jyll Bradley, and choreographers from London's Royal Ballet and the San Francisco Ballet. Clyne's immersive approach to music-making offers audiences new entry points for experiencing new music and understanding classical music's relationship to other branches of the arts. "Success for me is about reaching audiences," she says on the latest episode of the Classical Post podcast. "My role as a composer is to create something as beautiful as I can and to share that. When people come back with a piece that's been very moving for them, I feel I've been successful in sharing something with the world. That's a very humbling feeling." In this conversation, we discuss her ongoing partnership with the Orchestra of St. Luke's, how a Mark Rothko painting inspired her orchestral work Color Field, and the ways a lifelong love of literature is helping her to write an opera on the life of Emily Dickinson. Plus, Clyne discusses her wellness practices — from drawing and Japanese calligraphy to long walks with her adopted pup Penny — the joy of ending a long day with a Negroni, and her favorite place for classic steak frites in New York City. — Classical Post® is a leading podcast based in New York. As we take a few weeks out, I thought to re-share this episode from 2020 with Janice Clyne. Diet and food are always popular.    This week I am talking to Janice Clyne, The Fermentation Specialist. We can all relate to food; it is an emotive subject and stirs memories, both good and some times not so good. Who remembers dreadful dinner dates or childhood associations? I have a horror story around sprouts that stopped me eating them for years, but for the most part, some of my best memories with friends, lovers or family are related to food and drink.         Sharing A Passion I am a foodie; cooking and sharing food is my thing. Food is never far from my mind, I know what I will be cooking on most days and I love to experiment. So when I first met Janice Clyne, it was with some excitement. Janice is a fermented food specialist. While most of us know our fermented drinks and or fermented flour (bread) there is a whole world of fermentation that is both fun and offers enormous benefit to our health. I first came across Janice through the Change Your World Everyday facebook group. In Facebook, group engagement is often variable, but this week Janice had the Change Your World'ers sharing photos of food and exploring new possibilities. It was dynamic, and I was hooked. I could see a whole new area of taste and flavour possibilities opening before me.   Further details about this podcast along with my Guest's website and social links are all available at: https://lifepassionandbusiness.com/janice-clyne-the-fermentation-specialist/     Life Passion & Business is dedicated to exploring what it takes to be Extraordinary, to face challenges and rejoice in the opportunities they bring, and expand our vision into new ways of thinking and living.
