WHEN THE HOST WAS A NOVELIST:  7/10: "Hollywood Before the Mast," a story from the collection, "Gordon Liddy is My Muse," by John Calvin Batchelor. January 1, 1990.   Read by the host. https://www.amazon.com/Gordon-Liddy-Muse-Calvin-Batchelor/dp/0671690787 From Publishers Weekly Posing as hack writer Tommy "Tip" Paine, Batchelor ( The Birth of the People's Republic of Antarctica ) offers a comic and often provocative look at contemporary America in this episodic "autobiographical" novel. In eight chapters, each self-contained, Tip roams from Moscow to Hollywood to New England to his ultimate destination, G. Gordon Liddy's Firearms Security Academy in Arizona. While in Russia, he watches a boyhood friend progress, over the years, from awed admirer of American western movies to KGB superstar to an official non-person, "disappeared" as part of that nation's changing politics. In Hollywood, despite the warnings of his decidedly offbeat agent, Tip falls into the clutches of a woman who is not what she seems. In New England, together with his "imaginary best friend, McKerr," Tip solves a multiple murder and uncovers what is possibly a relic of American history. Finally, in the Arizona desert, he posits an arguable identity for the still-elusive"Deep Throat" of the Watergate scandal. Other tales in this totally engaging work recount run-ins with famous literary personages, wealthy Texans and restless Vietnam veterans, or suggest a dark and ancient secret hidden in the heart of Germany. This may be Batchelor's breakthrough novel to the wide audience he deserves.  Copyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc. From Library Journal The narrator of this inventive picaresque novel is Tip Paine, formerly a spook for the National Security Agency and now a moderately successful sci-fi/spy writer. In eight exuberant episodes Tip ranges from Moscow to Hollywood. He provides mystery (a tale of murder and mayhem in a small New England town), commentary on international politics (an elegiac account of a Russian KGB agent who falls victim to glasnost), and wickedly funny satire of pomp and foolishness in Texas high society, a university writing workshop, and a desert training academy for mercenaries. By alluding frequently to the classics of American literature (e.g., Moby Dick, The Last of the Mohicans ), Batchelor creates illuminating but highly entertaining commentary on contemporary society. - Albert E. - Albert E. Imagine going back to work, 2 weeks after you had attended the funeral of your partner, who just died from cancer, to be pulled into a room as=nd told "it's been 2 weeks, we thought you would have moved on by now and you're making other people in the office feel uncomfortable" YEP!!! Can you even imagine!!  This was the reality for Nikki Shah, but it wasn't the first time she'd encountered this complete unawareness of her circumstances. Nikki cared for her partner throughout his cancer diagnosis, treatment and up until he passed, and in that time they both experienced the reality of what we are faced with today, in that humans basically suck at dealing with uncomfortable emotions. Going through what has been the most painful experience of her life, Nikki observed and experienced the lack of understanding, empathy, support and resources available for people around her to utilise to be able to help themselves with their emotions, so they could support her and her partner.  After dealing with the death of her partner, and the continued lack of understanding and empathy from certain experiences she had with people, Nikki decided to do something about it. She left her security, her great paying job and leapt into the world of uncertain, creating the business My Muse, an agency designed to go into workplaces and teach them how to be able to support their staff who are either going through cancer or who are supporting people who are going through cancer. She is teaching people how to be conscious and aware enough to consider other people's feeling and emotions and giving them tools and strategies to be able to implement it in a professional environment. Nikki's work is so important, her story is inspiring.  My fav Ruby Slipper moments were: "Women are great at pushing ourselves, but not so great at giving ourselves a break" "Find your tribe to be your cheer squad, on the good and the bad days" "Celebrate all the wins, not ust the big ones" Rally donation link: https://2019.mysteryboxrally.com.au/bing-bong company website: www.mymuse.com.au Direct email: nikki@mymuse.com.au Blog Nikki mentions in the podcast: https://www.mymuse.com.au/blog/2018/12/19/the-dreaded-day Contact Rosie here. Cliff Eidelman Interview.   Jerry Goldsmith created an epic and memorable theme when he composed the 1979 film Star Trek: The Motion Picture, a theme that would become synonymous with Star Trek due to its use as the main title for the hit television series Star Trek: The Next Generation. In 1989, the theme would be used again for the film Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. Given its popularity, many Trek fans were surprised when this theme did not greet them for the 25th anniversary film of their beloved franchise. Instead of Goldsmith's bright patriotic tones, a dark and moody operatic piece with an unusual addition of male choir greeted cinema goers.  In this episode of Melodic Treks, host Brandon-Shea Mutala is joined by Cliff Eidelman to discuss his career as a composer. We talk about his new project that was inspired by art, working with the both the London and Munich Symphony Orchestras, his vocal album, and getting the job as the composer for Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. Melodic Treks: A Star Trek Music Podcast

Star Trek VI and Cliff Eidelman. One of the youngest composers to score a feature film, Cliff Eidelman was only 22 when he wrote for Magdalene. Since then, he has amassed an impressive body of work—from film to concert hall. He has written a number of scores including Triumph of the Spirit (1989), Christopher Columbus: The Discovery (1992), Crazy People (1990), Untamed Heart (1992), Leap of Faith (1992), Now and Then (1995), If These Walls Could Talk (1996), Witness Protection (1999), An American Rhapsody (2001), Ocean Men: Extreme Dive (2001), The Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants (2005), Open Window (2006), and Big Miracle (2012), which was Eidelman’s fifth collaboration with director Ken Kwapis. In this episode of Melodic Treks, host Brandon-Shea Mutala is joined by Matthew Rushing of The Orb, The 602 Club, and Literary Treks to reflect upon Eidelman's career, from his composing credits to his solo album. We also take a look at some of his work conducting scores by other composers, and conclude with the soundtrack for Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, in recognition of the 25th anniversary of the film. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
