The Alaska Filming Initiative is a group of local filmmakers dedicated to reigniting the success of our state's film industry. They hope to not just create movie making opportunities, but to foster a thriving, diverse, and sustainable economic environment across the state. One of the ways they are exploring to achieve this, is by bringing a film tax incentive back to the state.  Some Alaskans might remember the movies Big Miracle and The Frozen Ground filming up here over a decade ago. At that time, there was a sizable film tax incentive in place that attracted those productions. But it was short lived, and since then movies and TV shows that are set in Alaska often film at other locations, where it is more financially feasible. In this episode, we're hearing from Ashleigh Snead and Steven Cornfield, two members of the Alaska Filming Initiative. They spoke with ATMI producer Jordan Kehl about how a film tax incentive could benefit the state's economy, garnering support from legislatures to get a feasibility study done, and much more.  Hosted by Ormund Alaois. Music by Kendrick Whiteman and Devin Shreckengost. Many thanks to supporters of our podcast, including the Alaska State Council on the Arts. Andrew Lewin discusses the recent incident of a pod of orcas trapped in ice off the coast of Japan. He explains how a researcher discovered the stranded orcas and alerted the authorities, leading to widespread concern and viral footage. Andrew also touches on the importance of understanding why whales and orcas get stuck in ice. The episode was prompted by a listener, Eddie Benningfeld, who reached out to Andrew on Instagram. The distressing situation was captured on drone footage by a researcher who spotted the pod, consisting of about a dozen orcas, bobbing up and down in the ice. Concerned individuals quickly shared the footage online and contacted authorities in Japan for assistance. The video showed the orcas tightly packed together, with some reports even suggesting that they had blood on their jaws, indicating their attempts to find holes in the ice to breathe and break free. Orcas frequently come to the surface to breathe, so being trapped in ice can be life-threatening for them. Efforts were made to rescue the trapped orcas, with petitions signed and authorities contacted. In some cases, icebreakers were used to break up the ice and create pathways for the orcas to swim to safety. However, the fate of the trapped orcas remained uncertain until they were discovered to have disappeared. The disappearance of the orcas has led to speculation that they managed to escape from the ice. It is believed that they may have found a path with multiple holes in the ice, allowing them to navigate their way out. The exact details of their escape are unknown, but the fact that they are no longer trapped is a positive development. This incident highlights the vulnerability of orcas and other marine mammals to getting trapped in ice. While it is not uncommon for orcas to become stuck in ice, it is always a cause for concern due to the potential for injury or death. The rescue efforts and attention brought to this incident demonstrate the public's concern for the well-being of these iconic marine species. Continued monitoring of the situation is important to ensure the pod of orcas remains safe and does not become trapped again. The incident also serves as a reminder of the need to protect and conserve marine habitats to prevent such situations from occurring in the future. Orcas and other whales can become stuck in ice when hunting under the ice and surfacing to breathe. This is a common occurrence in the Arctic region, where these whales often venture to hunt. Orcas, in particular, are known for their frequent surfacing to breathe, unlike other whale species that can stay submerged for longer periods. When hunting, orcas swim beneath the ice and search for prey. They rely on small holes or openings in the ice to come up and breathe. However, sometimes the ice freezes around them or becomes too packed, making it difficult for them to find a way out. This can result in them getting trapped under the ice. The recent incident off the coast of Japan, where a pod of orcas was found trapped in ice, highlights the potential dangers these animals face. The drone footage captured by a researcher showed the orcas bobbing up and down in the ice, unable to move for several hours. The distressing video went viral, raising concerns among those who saw it. Efforts were made to rescue the trapped orcas. Authorities were contacted, and petitions were signed to bring attention to the situation. In some cases, icebreakers were used to break up the ice and create openings for the whales to escape. However, it is not an easy task due to the size and weight of these massive animals. It is important to note that orcas getting stuck in ice is not uncommon. While it is distressing to witness, it is a natural risk they face when navigating icy environments. The fact that they are highly social animals that travel in pods can further increase the number of individuals affected when a pod becomes trapped. Movies like "Big Miracle" and real-life incidents, such as the recent one off the coast of Japan, bring people together to help these animals. Collaborative efforts involving various stakeholders, including environmental activists, whale hunters, and government authorities, are often required to rescue trapped whales. The ultimate goal is to ensure the safety and well-being of these iconic and important ocean species. While the recent incident in Japan ended with the orcas potentially escaping, it is crucial to continue monitoring their movements and well-being to prevent them from getting stuck in the ice again. Overall, the episode highlights the challenges faced by orcas and other whales when hunting under the ice and surfacing to breathe. It emphasizes the importance of raising awareness, taking action, and collaborating to protect these magnificent creatures and their habitats. Efforts are made to rescue trapped whales, including using icebreakers to break up the ice and create paths for the whales to swim to safety. In the podcast episode, it was mentioned that when whales or orcas get trapped in ice, authorities are often contacted, and icebreakers are brought in to help. Icebreakers are specially designed ships that can break through thick ice. They have a reinforced hull and a powerful engine that allows them to navigate through icy waters. Icebreakers are used to create paths or channels in the ice, allowing trapped whales to swim to safety. These paths are crucial for the whales to reach open water and access areas where they can breathe. By breaking up the ice, icebreakers provide a lifeline for the trapped whales, preventing them from suffocating or becoming injured. In the podcast episode, the movie "Big Miracle" was mentioned, which is based on a true story of a rescue effort to save gray whales trapped in ice near Point Barrow, Alaska. In the movie, de-icing machines were used to keep the holes open for the whales to breathe. This highlights the various methods and technologies that can be employed to aid in the rescue of trapped whales. Rescuing trapped whales is a challenging and complex task. It requires coordination between different stakeholders, including authorities, environmental organizations, and even local communities. The goal is to ensure the safety and well-being of the whales while minimizing any potential harm or stress caused during the rescue operation. It is important to note that the use of icebreakers is just one method employed in whale rescue efforts. Other techniques, such as using whale calls or guiding the whales with boats, have also been utilized in different situations. The specific approach taken depends on the circumstances and the species of whale involved. Overall, the use of icebreakers to break up ice and create paths for trapped whales is an important tool in the rescue efforts. These efforts demonstrate the commitment of individuals and organizations to protect and preserve these magnificent creatures and ensure their survival in the face of challenging circumstances.

“I call it the percolating trauma inside him, and I think that it's a combination of things with Matthew Rhys who plays Perry Mason. Again, it's holding onto this trauma that happened a dozen years ago in the war, that this is not something that he has really dealt with. And I think that you can't take that lightly. It doesn't go away with time. It doesn't heal. It's still inside you, and it's still informing who you are. And I think that was important in coming into season two because here is a man who's now thrust into this whole other battle. He's now an attorney. And how does he put lives in his hands? So he is gone through this in season one, and now we're coming into season two knowing that he's haunted by the fact that he thought he saved somebody. He put Emily Dodson's life in his hands only to have her commit suicide. So now he's wrestling deeply with the flaws in himself and his character that these soldiers put their lives in his hands in the war.Emily Dodson put her life in his hands in the trial. And now he's going to take on these two boys who could swing on a noose. Does he want that? Does he have enough inside him? And that's why we play with the imposter syndrome because he doesn't know if this is who he really is. And does he still have that fight inside him?And so I think that's the sort of push-pull I think that you're alluding to inside and that he's trying to hold it in and trying to hold it all together. And we do see those moments when he can't hold it back. When he punches the guy in the face in episode four when he steals the horse. These are things that he needs to release that valve because it's so much he's trying to hold onto to get to the result that he wants to win the fight because he hasn't fully won a fight yet. And that's hard.”Michael Begler is showrunner, writer, and executive producer of Perry Mason, which debuted as HBO's most-watched series in nearly two years upon its premiere in June 2020. And what we see is really this forced deportation. I think they called it repatriation. It was taking not only people who were born in Mexico and came across the border and settled, but people who were born in the United States and, even if they didn't speak a word of Spanish, they sent them away because it was someone to blame. It was 'taking away jobs.' “Creators Ron Fitzgerald and Rolin Jones and Team Downey, this was a sort of a thing that they came up with, but I think what we wanted to explore in season two was really to dig more into this idea of what is it to be a woman with ambition in this era, 3% of attorneys were women in the entire nation in 1933. So that alone is an uphill battle. And then when you add the complication of being queer in this time, and that there are laws against it that you have to make sure every step you take is so calculated and so careful that you don't slip up. It's all based on fear and threat and what happens if something you've established all of a sudden, a woman can come in and do it.When we look at the current political climate, and we look at the way they're trying to erase history, to whitewash history, I think is such a dangerous precedent because we can only learn from our past. We can learn from our mistakes. We can learn from what happened. If we don't tell the truth, where does that leave us? If we can cherry-pick what's important to know and not know, and by an elite view, well, how different are those elite views from the elite view of a hundred years ago? We have to learn from our past. It's the only way to have a future. “The best example for me were my parents for sure. There are certain things that they instilled in me from a young age that I carry with me as a writer and as a grown man. I think a sense of humility, a sense of patience, and a sense of humor are so important. I think that looking at everyone and having the patience to listen to who they are and what their circumstances are and then not take yourself too seriously. That you have to give yourself a chance to breathe and all that sort of helped inform the person that I feel I am today.”Michael Begler is showrunner, writer, and executive producer of Perry Mason, which debuted as HBO's most-watched series in nearly two years upon its premiere in June 2020. Career Conversations with John Krasinski. Moderated by Jenelle Riley, Variety. John Krasinski has established himself as one of the most exciting talents as an actor, writer and director, engaging audiences on the big and small screen. He directed, co-wrote and stars in A Quiet Place. On the small screen, Krasinski can be seen as the title character in Amazon’s adaptation, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, inspired by the novelist’s impressive franchise. Krasinski last directed and starred in The Hollars alongside Anna Kendrick, Richard Jenkins, Margo Martindale and Sharlto Copley, which premiered to great acclaim at Sundance 2016 and was released by Sony Pictures Classics. Krasinski also starred as a Navy SEAL in Michael Bay’s Benghazi thriller 13 Hours. Through his own Sunday Night banner, Krasinski executive produces Lip Sync Battle on Spike TV alongside Jimmy Fallon and Stephen Merchant, based on the popular segment on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon which he created with Merchant and Fallon in 2013. The hit show is in its fourth season. Sunday Night recently made an overall producing deal with Paramount TV. Krasinski notably starred on NBC’s Emmy®-winning smash hit The Office for nine seasons, where he portrayed the charming boy-next-door Jim Halpert. His recent film credits include the Gus Van Sant directed Promised Land, which he also wrote with Matt Damon; Disney Pixar’s Monster’s University in which he lent his voice; legendary Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki’s latest animated film The Wind Rises; and Cameron Crowe’s Aloha. His additional film roles include performances in the uplifting family film Big Miracle; Something Borrowed; Nancy Meyers' It's Complicated; Sam Mendes’ Away We Go; the animated smash hits Monsters vs. Aliens and Shrek the Third; George Clooney's Leatherheads; Ken Kwapis' License to Wed; Christopher Guest's For Your Consideration and Bill Condon's Kinsey. Krasinski previously adapted and directed the David Foster Wallace book Brief Interviews with Hideous Men. The independently financed film screened at Sundance in 2009, and was released by IFC later that year. He also co-wrote an untitled action-adventure script with Oren Uziel, which was sold to Warner Bros. in 2013 that he will produce alongside Uziel. He won a Theatre World Award for his stage debut in DRY POWDER, which he starred in alongside Claire Danes and Hank Azaria at the Public Theater in New York. Krasinski graduated from Brown University as an honors playwright and later studied at the National Theater Institute.

Composer Cliff Eidelman takes time to talk about his recent score for Big Miracle. We discuss in detail the importance of the composer/director relationship. We also focus on how to make sure the score to a family film doesn't seep into saccharine and schmaltzy territory. As you can hear from the opening intro that Big Miracle is nothing of the sort but instead is a grand sounding score with well balanced emotions. Cliff is a great guy who was part of FMM's recent composer signing. Enjoy this terrific interview!

I recall my first real experience with hummingbirds. My wife had hung a hummingbird feeder from a pole behind our house, and after a few days the air itself seemed to be buzzing with the tiny birds. One was clearly attempting to dominate the space and would attempt to chase the others off, away from the feeder, but the other two or three would continue to come back for more, and before long there was a virtual "hummingbird war" going on!
