Most founders are loath to compare their businesses to other companies. Not the veterinary care startup Modern Animal. "We were definitely inspired by One Medical early on," said Steven Eidelman, founder and CEO of Modern Animal. "I think Tom Lee, the founder, was really a trailblazer for: How do we bring technology into health care?" The idea behind both companies was to add a technological element to health care to make the customer experience more seamless. Eidelman described the core problem with veterinary clinics thus: "As a pet owner, you and I both know the experience we have going into a veterinary clinic. And it's a little bit underwhelming -- to put it nicely, the experience is not really customer-forward." Eidelman joined this week's Modern Retail Podcast and spoke about his company's recent growth and future plans. Modern Animal, which first launched in 2020, tries to make the experience better by building its own clinics, hiring its own veterinary and technical staff, and using technology to make the entire process smoother. For an annual fee, members can get unlimited access to exam visits as well as Modern Animal's telehealth platform. It's currently available in major California and Texas cities, and will be opening new locations in both Colorado and Arizona later this year. "We offer primary preventative care," Eidelman said. "We offer urgent care, and we offer our care digitally. We do dentistry, we do surgery. What we don't do is we don't do after hours," Eidelman said. While the business is health care, Eidelman believes the key to success is thinking about it from a retail perspective. At the end of the day, the core underlying business model that we are building has not really ever been built in the veterinary industry," he said. "And that is: we are building a retail footprint, a sort of box-driven business."
In this Classical Conversation, Mary Claire Murphy asks composer Cliff Eidelman about the behind-the-scenes of his creative process for film scoring. Mr. Eidelman also comments on his concert discography, including a recent reinterpretation of his symphonic poem The Tempest.

This year's Spotify wrapped revealed that the Modern Animal was our top episode of the year. This week, they return, to catch up on everything that has changed and developed since we last spoke. Following on from our viral episode, join the conversation as we get an overview of this past year's transformative chapter in the veterinary space. With an anticipated shortage of 15,000 veterinarians by 2030 as many as 75 million pets could be left without access to veterinary care. So a new assembly bill, AB 1399, represents more than just an opportunity to modernize veterinary care; it is a crucial step towards safeguarding continued care for all our beloved pets, an essential need that became starkly apparent during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this episode you'll learn:
Liz Eidelman, whose name some of you may recognize as the funny mom on Instagram @lizeidelman, gave birth to her first child in the hospital with a team of med students present. She had an episiotomy she didn't want, a vacuum-assist that led to another flood of people in the room, and a baby who was whisked away to the NICU within moments of birth, leaving Liz in the dark about her baby's condition. Overhearing nurses whisper, "The mother doesn't know yet," added to her anxiety. What Liz and her husband soon learned was that their baby was born with esophageal atresia, necessitating a life-saving surgery on Day Two of their baby's life. Now, with the perspective of a few years and two births under her belt, Liz reflects on the many ways in which she was grossly mistreated in her birth, by the very people and system who helped her baby go from a status of "born incompatible with life" to healthy and well. Liz dives into how her labor could have taken a different course, not only the first time but also the second, had she been more aware of her rights within the hospital birth environment. Liz shares her personal story and reveals alarming details that ignited her passion to become a doula. She also created a thriving Instagram community for moms, where humor serves as the antidote for the challenges of parenting, birth, and life. Gene Eidelman, the co-founder of Azure Printed Homes, joins the Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio podcast to discuss founding a 3D home printing company and how the process revolutionizes the home building industry. Eidelman chats with host Carol Morgan on the All About Real Estate segment. Originally from Ukraine, Eidelman relocated to Atlanta in the mid-1980s and has lived in the eclectic city for over 20 years. With a background in real estate development and construction, Eidelman and his business partner founded Azure Printed Homes three years ago to build more affordable housing with a positive environmental impact at a faster pace. After building homes using traditional measures, the Azure team shifted to 3D printing methods. In the past two years, Azure Printed Homes has worked hard to perfect its 3D printing practices by trying different computer methods, finding the best equipment to print units and much more! Eidelman and his team delivered their first printed home unit last year. Eidelman said, “I love when customers' eyes start to sparkle because they have a vision!” With no luck finding a pre-existing 3D printing system, Eidelman and his business partner decided to develop their own 3D printing technology that features multiple equipment pieces, including a printer and extruder. The printed homes company aimed to use sustainable materials that met seismic requirements and could withstand hurricane winds as well as incorporated roofs strong enough to handle heavy snow loads. After much research and deliberation, Azure Printed Homes settled on sustainable materials such as recycled plastics, fiberglass and carbon fiber. The recycled plastic used by the home building company is derived primarily from recycled water bottles. Working with three different manufacturers, Eidelman and his team provide the manufacturers with a composite formula that consists of at least 60% recycled plastic and a mixture of fiberglass and carbon fiber. Azure Printed Homes began its 3D home printing journey with 10x12 backyard studio units and has gradually expanded its unit sizing. The company's 10x18 AUD units feature 180 square feet of living space, including a bathroom with a shower and a small kitchen. With stackable products, customers can purchase up to eight units together to deliver one large home. Eidelman said, “While our biggest demand is for our backyard studios and small units, our next category is 900 square-foot homes!” 3D home printing is revolutionizing the home building industry. The process replaces the need for trades, such as framing, roofing and waterproofing, when it comes to building a home and is a more cost-effective construction solution. Azure Printed Homes develops one basic unit a day compared to the months it takes to build a traditional 180-square-foot home. Completing the unit, including flooring, cabinetry and finishes, takes approximately one week for a small unit and two to three weeks for the larger units. In this episode of the Veterinary Business Success Show, we had the pleasure of interviewing Steven Eidelman and Dr. Christie Long from Modern Animal, a de novo practice group with locations in Los Angeles, the Bay Area, and soon in Austin, Texas. They shared their insights on the importance of transparency, intentional design, and community building in the veterinary industry. One of the key takeaways from our conversation is the importance of transparency in building trust with clients. Modern Animal aims to be extremely transparent in how they communicate and how they show up physically. They have a lot of glass in their practice, and clients can see all the way through from the street to the back. They also have a digital experience that wraps around the clinic experience, which is transparent in how they communicate about medicine, pricing, estimates, and the reasoning behind their care.Dr. Long and Eidelman also emphasized the importance of intentional design and organization in the treatment area of their practices. They explained that clutter, messiness, and noise could create a stressful environment for both staff and clients and can distract from the practice of medicine. They emphasized the need for commitment and setting standards to eliminate cognitive overhead and streamline workflow. We also discussed the challenges of maintaining a relationship between clients and their preferred veterinarian while providing access to care 24/7. Modern Animal has built a model that allows clients to see their preferred veterinarian and access virtual care 24/7. They have a team of registered nurses who have full access to the client's medical record, allowing for urgent care and access to medical history.Dr. Christie Long and Steven Eidelman also discussed the importance of integrating the medical and operational aspects of a veterinary practice. They emphasized the need for a strong partnership between the medical and operational leaders in each practice to ensure the business runs smoothly and effectively.Overall, Modern Animal is committed to balancing medical quality, employee engagement, member experience, and profitable growth to ensure a sustainable business that delivers the best experience possible for its clients and patients. As Dr. Long and Eidelman put it, "We're playing the game the hard way, but we're playing the game for the right reasons." If you're interested in learning more about Modern Animal and its approach to veterinary care, I highly recommend listening to this episode.Episode Outline [00:00] Episode Intro[01:49] Importance of transparency in communication and physical practice[03:26] The implementation of an open hospital concept and its benefits [05:10] Balancing transparency between the doctor and the client[07:19] Redesigning the Veterinary Experience [09:27] Standardization and organization of the veterinary working area[12:17] Scenario example where standardization process didn't work [15:10] Building customer loyalty on the brand instead of the doctor[18:04] The Propensity for No Boundaries [20:38] Building a Trusted Brand [00:24:23] Discussion on the tension between the four core principles of a veterinary practice[23:08] Ad Break- Learn more about our Leaders program [25:24] The importance of acknowledging the need for medicine and operations to work in harmony and how Modern Animal uses the concept of dyads to achieve this[28:16] Building own software for the company[32:53] Business expansion...

The State of California is in a housing crisis, and to meet the demand, the state needs to build 310,000 homes every year for the next 8 years. However, between the high cost of land, labor, and materials, this is a serious problem with no easy solution. So our guest today, Gene Eidelman, began to analyze the issue at a high level, and started to ask himself: why not use 3D printers to create the homes instead? Azure makes prefab units built 70% faster and 30% less expensive than traditionally constructed units, all while using recycled materials. They can be used as backyard studios, and offices, and up to 5 units can be stacked together. In this episode, we discuss with Gene about: How these can be used to help with the homeless crisis Why their early adopters were glamping retreats Why Gene finds strength in coming from an immigrant community

The veterinarian industry is changing, but you probably haven't noticed unless you've been paying close attention. For years, the vet industry has been defined by small mom-and-pop clinics. However, large investment firms have been buying up practices, yet offering nothing new or innovative. These old practices still keep their patient records on paper, don't offer 24/7 access, and if you are out of town, it's nearly impossible to book an emergency appointment. And this is all while, according to Time, suicide rates among veterinarians are incredibly high, and as a matter of fact, women vet suicide rates are 3.5x the national average. Our guest today is changing all of that, from how the clinics are built to waiving exam frees for members, Modern Animal is redefining what it means to practice veterinary medicine from the ground up. In today's episode, we talk with Steven Eidelman, the founder of Modern Animal. We discuss: - How Modern Animal is working to avoid vet burnout with this new approach - Setting up a tattoo parlor at a vet conference - The nationwide vet shortage, and what that means for the pet industry in the coming years
Derek goes on site to the Los Angeles headquarters of Azure 3D Printed Homes to see how their approach to affordable housing with 3D printing differs from Boxabl's assembly line approach (ILAB Episode 245). Derek sits down with co-founder Gene Eidelman to talk how he went from growing up in Ukraine to running a startup to solve the housing shortage. Then Derek and Johnny discuss if they'd invest in this, and how they'd utilize these homes for themselves. Gene Eidelman is a co-founder of Azure Printed Homes, the first-to-market construction company to utilize 3D printing technology and recycled materials to create modern prefab units 70% faster than traditional building methods, while making a positive impact on the environment. Gene went to undergrad school at USC and holds an MBA from Pepperdine. He was recognized for resettling 6,000 refugees from the former Soviet Union in the late 80s by the United States Jaycees. In addition, he appeared on Oprah Winfrey Show, and served on numerous non-profit educational organizations in the US, India, and the UK. He has over 35 years of experience building and developing residential properties. His startup before Azure was an education management company which he grew to $120MM in revenue with 1,800 employees on three continents. He co-founded Azure in 2019. Azure initially bootstrapped its growth and raised a pre-seed angel round earlier this year and is in the middle of a $5MM seed round raise. Azure generates $400K/mo in revenue and has over $14MM in pre-orders. Mass production of the units will begin before the end of this year. Nuestros hijos, como tal como son. Con lo bueno, con lo malo. Con lo difícil y con lo diferente. Pero desde un punto de vista muy práctico. Innovation Inside LaunchStreet: Leading Innovators | Business Growth | Improve Your Innovation Game
When things are changing so rapidly (particularly right now), our usual approach of working from the present to the future is not going to work. To survive and thrive, we need to start from the future and work backward, yet this is something most of us don’t even consider, or if we do, struggle with. Mark Johnson explains the concept of “Future Back” and how that can help us in these rapidly-changing times. Mark Johnson is the co-founder and Senior Partner of Innosight, a growth strategy consulting company. He has been a strategic advisor to both Global 1000 and start-up companies in a wide range of industries. He is the co-author of Lead from the Future: How to Turn Visionary Thinking into Breakthrough Growth (April 2020), which explores the concept of “Future-Back” thinking and provides a hands-on guide to long-term planning, strategy development, and execution within established organizations. How is the future like an impressionist painting, not a photograph? Mark dives into the art of the possible, and how thinking about future scenarios calls for creative right-brain thinking. To survive, we need to start thinking about long-term plans but we’re constantly just in reactive mode trying to keep our balance. Mark shares how we can balance these two states, and his strategies to inspire and promote thinking clearly, creatively, and expansively. He also tackles the present-forward fallacy, why looking at data keeps us trapped in the past, and how to push past our cognitive biases to get to truly innovative future-back thinking. David Eidelman, Dean of McGill's Faculty of Medicine, Joins the CEO Series by CJAD800
Today on Hempire our host is joined by William S. Eidelman, MD. William's medical education began when he was a child. His late great father was a professor of psychiatry at St. Louis University School Of Medicine. He was the only non-Freudian in the department of psychiatry for 25+ years. William learned from his father that through simple caring, they could help others through their pain and illness, sometimes. He showed him his understanding that everyone in medicine has a lot to learn, that no one really knows all the answers. Doctor's do the best they can, which was sometimes successful and often not. So this was his attitude when he started medical school. Once there, it seemed like something was missing from the medical program, but William couldn't say quite what it was at the time. It seemed like they were going in the wrong direction in several basic ways. Now he realizes that there were several topics missing or neglected.

Main Titles with Mike Schindler. Main Titles are an interesting and important part of a film's score. In this episode of Melodic Treks, host Brandon-Shea Mutala is joined by Mike Schindler, host of Trek FM's Stage Nine, to discuss Main Titles. Five Film Favorites with John Tenuto. John Tenuto has been a sociology professor for 20 years, most of those at the College of Lake County in Grayslake, Illinois. He and his wife, Maria Jose, have become experts on Star Trek through personal research and the friendships they have cultivated with talent from both behind and in front of the camera. Their research on Star Trek's production history, Star Trek library archives, and Star Trek's cultural influences have been featured on numerous radio stations, television shows, and newspapers including USA Today, BBC Radio, WGN News, and the Chicago Tribune—not to mention many podcast episodes right here on Trek.fm. In this episode of Melodic Treks, host Brandon-Shea Mutala is joined by John Tenuto to discuss the scores, composers, and behind-the-scenes information on the Star Trek films. Connecting William Shatner and John Lithgow Musically. Have you ever played Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon? In this episode of Melodic Treks, host Brandon-Shea Mutala head into the Star Trek universe to play the classic game of Six Degrees of Separation… but with a musical twist. We challenged the members of Trek.fm’s Facebook listeners’ group, The Babel Conference, to come up with the name of an actor to connect to William Shatner. The winning choice, submitted by listener Carl Morries, was John Lithgow. These two actors have been in many films and television productions, so we decided to use only movies whose scores were composed by Star Trek composers. Listen on to trace a path back to Lithgow to Shatner. And how does Jamie Lee Curtis fit into all of this? Chapters “Surprise Attack” (Excerpt from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan) (Composed by J.
