There is action to be taken in the world, for sure. Urgent action to take care of our lives, our communities, and the wider world in which we all live. But there is a also a deep well of presence, patience, intimacy, and connection right in the centre of each of us. When our action is fearful, rushed and out of touch with this still centre, it easily spills over into polarisation, panic and disconnection. And when the source of our action is this centre, the essential aliveness and goodness that we all are at the heart of things, much more that is sustaining and care-filled becomes possible. What is it to find our way back to the vastness that is our origins, and to let our lives and relationships be infused by that at each moment, especially now? This week's Turning Towards Life is hosted, as always, by Lizzie Winn and Justin Wise of Thirdspace. We are afraid of it…and we long for it. When we experience that silence, we remember who we are: creatures of the stars, created from the cooling of this planet, created from dust and gas, created from the elements, created from time and space…created from silence. In our present culture, silence is something like an endangered species… an endangered fundamental. The experience of silence is now so rare that we must cultivate it and treasure it. This is especially true for shared silence. Sharing silence is, in fact, a political act. When we can stand aside from the usual and perceive the fundamental, change begins to happen. Our lives align with deeper values and the lives of others are touched and influenced. Silence brings us back to basics, to our senses, to our selves. It locates us. Without that return we can go so far away from our true natures that we end up, quite literally, beside ourselves. We live blindly and act thoughtlessly. We endanger the delicate balance which sustains our lives, our communities, and our planet. Each of us can make a difference. Politicians and visionaries will not return us to the sacredness of life. That will be done by ordinary men and women who together or alone can say, "Remember to breathe, remember to feel, remember to care, let us do this for our children and ourselves and our children's children. Let us practice for life's sake." by Gunilla Norris Photo by Janke Laskowski on Unsplash

An anthology of new works that reflect events, opinions and sentiments from a fleeting and fatalistic moment in time - one that was both sensational and sorrowful in equal measure. • anthology /ænˈθɑ:lədʒi/ n.(诗、文、曲、画等的)选集• sentiment /ˈsentɪmənt/ n.观点,看法,情绪• fleeting /ˈfli:tɪŋ/ adj.短暂的,飞逝的• fatalistic /ˌfeɪtəˈlɪstɪk/ adj.宿命论的This period of the author's life is now over, the chapter closed and boarded up.译:作者(泰勒本人)生命中的这一时期已经结束,这一章也已关闭并封存。• board up用板围住;用栅木板阻断这里的chapter指的是人生的篇章(a chapter in life)。In English, we use this expression a lot to describe the events and different stages in our life。泰勒说,过去的阶段已经翻篇,现在要start a new chapter in life(开启人生的新篇章)。There is nothing to avenge, no scores to settle once wounds have healed.译:伤痛治愈之后,便再无仇恨可复,亦无怨憾须偿还。• heal /hi:l/ v.痊愈,康复;(感情创伤)愈合• avenge /əˈvendʒ/ v.报复,替……报仇“Settle the scores” meansto punish someone for something wrong that they did to you in the past (惩罚某人过去对你犯下的的错误).也许你真的会被身边的人伤得很深,那时候,all you can think about was to avenge(你唯一的想法就是“报复”)。但是就像霉霉所说的,“once your wounds have healed, there's no need to avenge.” 因为,when you heal your wounds(当你治愈了你的伤口),之后变得stronger and have a better life,那些曾经伤害了你的人won't matter anymore(就不再重要了)。你需要做的就是,focus on healing yourself first(首先专注于治愈你自己),因为your life matters the most! And upon further reflection, a good number of them turned out to be self-inflicted.译:在进一步反思过后会发现,很多的伤口其实都是自己给自己的。• wound n.伤口• self-inflicted adj.自己造成的This writer is of the firm belief that our tears become holy in the form of ink on a page.译:这位作者(也就是泰勒本人)坚信,眼泪会化成一页墨水,变得神圣。• holy adj.神圣的Once we have spoken our saddest story, we can be free of it.译:一旦我们说出了我们最悲伤的故事,我们就可以从中解脱了。• be free of摆脱And then all that's left behind is the tortured poetry.译:最后留下来的,只有苦难的诗篇。总结为一句话:世界以痛吻我,我却报之以歌。03外国网友的评价“my favourite thing about this album is that she made clear the tortured poets department era was over the minute the album dropped because she's already solidly in the next extremely happy and in love era.” 这位网友说,这张专辑里TA最喜欢的部分就是,在专辑发行的那一刻,泰勒made clear the tortured poets department era was over(痛苦的过去结束了),she's already solidly in the next extremely happy and in love era(她坚定地进入了非常幸福和美好的未来。)很多网友对新专辑里下面的这两句歌词感触很深: “I can do it with a broken heart.”“即使心碎,我也能做到。”对于这一句,每一个打工人应该都有体会,无论经历什么样的heartbreak,该上班的时候还得上班。 “I cry a lot, but I am so productive. It's an art.” “我哭个没完,但是我做事很有效率,这是门艺术。”A lot of fans are relating to this.这种感觉就是,当你break down crying(哭到崩溃的时候),你还要在镜子面前摆个pose,因为你哭的时候也好看,是真实又难过又乐观的感觉。对于这首歌,有网友就评论说:“This is the cry while dancing song.”(这是边哭边跳舞的歌。主播Anne也调侃说:下次难过的时候,我就放这首歌,然后边哭边跳。请留言告诉我们:泰勒的新专你听了吗?《TTPD》哪首歌最戳中你心?欢迎来评论区一起聊聊~

Invincible You with Dr. Alex Avila
THE AMAZING STORY OF DAVID AMBROZ: FROM HOMELESS AND ABUSED FOSTER CHILD TO AMERICAN CHAMPION OF CHANGE

Invincible You with Dr. Alex Avila

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 10, 2023 21:07

The problem of childhood poverty has many consequences. These include homelessness, abuse, and children's separation from their biological parents.  Our guest on Love University Podcast, David Ambroz, shared his harrowing and inspirational story of being a homeless child caught up in the system (A Place Called Home; davidambroz.com). Eventually through the love of his mentally ill mother, and his own resolve, David graduated from UCLA school of law and has worked at community leadership positions at Walt Disney and Amazon. He was also recognized by President Obama as an American Champion of Change. Here's what we learned about how to help eradicate child poverty and suffering in the US: *There is no roadmap to resilience.  David takes exception to research that points out certain characteristics that can help a child become resilient and overcome trauma (e.g., having a pleasant personality).  He explains how, as a foster kid, he could fake having a “pleasing personality” to get food, but that wasn't necessarily his true nature.  Also, David explains, there's rarely such a thing as “getting over the trauma.” Now in his 40's he still chokes up when he thinks about some of his homeless and abusive experiences as a child (covered in lice; eating cereal with maggots; sexually abused).  He explains: “Vulnerability is a superpower—life is the fire that forges you.” In the end, everyone must follow their individual path to health and healing. *You can choose to have unconditional love. David explains that he chose to have unconditional love for his mother. Due to her mental illness—a form of schizophrenia—she could be alternatively loving and abusive (physically). Yet, deep down, he knew his mother always loved him and encouraged all of her children to “reach for the stars.” David went to law school and his other siblings also achieved rewarding careers.  Now, he has taken care of his mother (for twenty years). He understands her “mental prison” and loves her unconditionally. There is no greater love. *Storytelling is key to growth and wisdom.  During his childhood years, David read a lot. His mother would encourage it constantly and he spent a lot of time in libraries (also to wash himself in the bathroom). Although the new generations are now reading more on their tablets and phones, and taking in information in smaller portions, it is still a good thing to read.  Ultimately, storytelling is the key to learning and growing—a tradition that dates back to ancient times. Although the medium has changed as technology advances, young people and older people alike can be inspired, motivated, and taught by excellent stories, such as the one David wrote in his memoir, A Place Like Home.  *Empathy is crucial to helping eradicate childhood poverty. Ask yourself, how would I feel if my child was homeless? Many people avoid looking at homeless people or giving them money (“they'll use it for drugs”), yet they are human beings just like us. If we put ourselves in their shoes (“For the grace of the Higher Nature—God, spirit, nature—there go I”), then our attitude will change and our hearts will melt. We will want to help in any way we can—by giving money, time, and making a difference at the community and legislative level to improve the condition of the impoverished in this country. We need more effective community programs to end the cycle of poverty, abuse, and violence. As a community activist, David is a strong proponent of city, state, and federal programs to help poverty victims—children and adults—get on their feet and live purposeful lives. He proposes establishing college dorm rooms (free) for foster teens who want to go to college. In addition, to encourage more social workers to enter the profession, he suggests giving them incentives such as loan forgiveness and loan assistance for buying a house. Other plans include offering more wraparound support services to help biological parents financially and psychologically so they can keep their children, as well as offering benefits to bring more good foster parents into the picture (making them federal/county employees; giving their children free college after ten years of service).  By decriminalizing poverty and encouraging more good people to help children—biological parents, social workers, foster parents, adoptive parents—our youth will have a better opportunity to enjoy a secure and loving environment so they can shine their potential. David's message of suffering and hope can be summarized with the phrase, “Our love is all one.”  We are united in our emotions, desires, hopes, and dreams as human beings—regardless of our race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, economic status, and so on. The fundamental needs for humans are to have physical and economic security, to love and be loved, and to make a difference or contribution to the world. By working and uniting together, we can help create a brighter future for our children and a loving world for all.

Cities Church Sermons

The year is 1918. A regiment of the US Army's 77th division has broken through enemy lines in the forest of Argonne, about 100 miles east of Paris. This quickly turned into a major problem as the unit had outrun the American front line and was promptly surrounded on all sides by the German army. Pinned down for days in the dense fog of the French forest, Major Charles Whittlesey and his men were taking fire and urgently calling for aid to their commander. In 1918, communication meant either laying telephone wire back through the thick woods, sending a soldier back with a message, or using one of their six Army-supplied carrier pigeons. And so they sent bird after bird with desperate messages for reinforcements or air support, but none of them reached command. On the third day, with enemy pressure escalating to include flamethrower assaults, they were down to just two birds. It was now or never. They released the pigeon. Along the route to headquarters, the pigeon was shot through the chest and blinded in one eye, but it kept flying and made it to headquarters. Their commander made plans to send reinforcements. And two days later, the Lost Battalion was rescued and went down in history. In our text this morning, the Psalmist is pinned down by enemies seeking his life, and he calls for aid from his Heavenly Commander, and he asks Him to hurry up! Today we'll walk through: 1) What the text says (David's crisis) 2) How it points to Jesus 3) Why it matters for usBefore we dive in, let's pray and ask for God's help.Father, I am poor and needy, but you are great. You are our help and our deliverer – do not delay this morning, we ask, but come now by your Spirit and give us a deeper gladness, a deeper rejoicing, a deeper love for your deliverance as we seek to know you through your Word. In Jesus' name, Amen. What does the text say?Let's begin with what this text says. David is clearly on the run here. “Make haste, O God, to deliver me! O Lord, make haste to help me!” Literally it reads, “God, to deliver me; Lord, to my help, hurry!” In several key moments in David's life, he was hiding out in caves and foxholes like a cornered animal with the might of the kingdom after him. Whether it was Saul and his army hunting David as a younger man, or later in life as David's own son Absalom and the traitors sought to take the crown. Either way, the theme here is speed. David needs help right now. Here they come, God! I need you, quick!! I don't have time for 28 verses and 2 choruses on this one. There's no ‘Selahs.' We are punching out a telegram to the commanding officer because the enemy is literally at the gates. They are coming, and they are mocking and laughing as they aim to humiliate and kill me. The situation is dire.Notice what David's enemies want to do (verses 2-3). They are seeking his life, delighting in his hurt, and literally laughing at him, “Aha, aha!” But note what David prays for. He doesn't ask God to give him super strength so he can bust out of the cave like Clark Kent fresh out of the phone booth. He asks God to deliver him. Three times, David says, “let them…” He relies on God to deliver him from his plight. Let them be turned back. Translation, please turn them back, God! You have to do it! You be my help and deliver! Why? Because, I am poor and needy. I can't do it. But he also thinks beyond himself in this moment. Moving outward from himself (hurry God!), to his problems (deal with them, God!), he lands on his friends. Or more specifically, on those who seek God instead of seeking his life. In the foxhole, taking bullets from the enemy, David is praying for the deep joy and gladness of God's people, leading to praise. Look at the contrast between David's enemies and David's friends: THEY seek my life (for death)… WE seek God (for life) THEY delight in my harm… WE delight (rejoice) in love for God THEY say “Ha-Ha!” in mockery… WE say “God is great!” in worshipNow speaking of going from enemies to friends, let's look now at how this Psalm points us to the real hero, Jesus Christ. As we put on another set of glasses here, lets try to hear Jesus' voice in this Psalm. Listen for it in these glimpses in the gospel accounts that echo Psalm 70. How does this Psalm point us to Jesus?Jesus was no stranger to enemies seeking his life. See Jesus, in the garden of Gethsemane, as soldiers and traitors stalk him in the night. Mark 14:33-36, 33 And he took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be greatly distressed and troubled. 34 And he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and watch.” 35 And going a little farther, he fell on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. 36 And he said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.” Make haste God, to deliver me! I am poor and needy. But you are my help and my deliverer. Jesus, in the hands of the soldiers. Matthew 27:27-31, 27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the governor's headquarters, and they gathered the whole battalion before him. 28 And they stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, 29 and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on his head and put a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 30 And they spit on him and took the reed and struck him on the head. 31 And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes on him and led him away to crucify him. They seek my life. They delight in my hurt. They laugh at me and mock me. Even in the midst of this, at the worst moment, Jesus has the same turn of mind as David. On the cross itself. Luke 23:34, 34 And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” And they cast lots to divide his garments. So David prayed that God would deal with with enemies. Jesus goes a head-whirling step further. He prays that God would deal with his enemies by forgiving them, even as they actively humiliated him. This is mercy that blows our minds and cannot be anything but wholly other, coming from outside of our broken world to heal it, and to heal us. But we also see Jesus love his friends during his great moment of need. John 19:26-27, 26 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” 27 Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home. In all of his troubles, Jesus looked to his Father, his Deliverer. 1 Peter 2:21-24, 21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. 22 He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. 23 When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. Jesus suffered for you, bearing your sins, my sins, in his body on the tree, healing us with his very wounds, so that we might die to sin, die to living like an enemy of God, and live to righteousness, live to seek our joy and gladness and help in God alone. But Peter says also that Jesus left us an example, that we might follow in his steps. So let's close by considering why this Psalm matters for us. Why this Psalm matters for usThere are several applications we could take from this text. Let me suggest four.First, ask yourself, how do you respond to highly stressful problems in your life? When it feels like you are likely to be overcome and overwhelmed? In his excellent devotional on the Psalms, Pastor Dane Ortlund says, “There are two and only two basic approaches to life. We can attempt to handle life's adversities through self-resourced deliverance or through looking outside ourselves for deliverance. We can look in, or we can look out… On what do you rely moment by moment?” Psalm 70 teaches us to rely on God alone for deliverance in every circumstance. “Hurry, God, please help me!”Second, we can learn not to take vengeance against our enemies into our own hands. Rather, we stop, and ask God to deal with them. In fact, we can follow Jesus' example by going one step further to pray for them… “Father, stop them. Show them their shame. But forgive them, they don't even know what they are doing.” To the extent that you are persecuted or oppressed, harassed or discriminated against as a Christian, let's remember that we are not lone wolves, solo holy warriors. We are sheep, and we need a shepherd. If there is a war for culture, our fighting should not look at all like the fighting of the world - we can call for Heavenly Aid.Third, when you are stuck, remember others and actively think and pray for them. You want to get out of a pit? The self-focused pity party pouting session will only drop you deeper. But instead of thinking ourselves in circles, we can go to God, trust His timing and his methods, and then pray for your brothers and sisters. Pray Psalm 70 for them. Pray for their joy and gladness in our happy God! “May all who seek you, rejoice and be glad in you! May those who love your salvation say evermore, God is great!” Pray that your life group, your community group, your roommate, your spouse, your children, your parents would see Jesus, love his Rescue, and praise Him saying forever, “God is great!” Lastly, we should press into the tension between verses 4 and 5. God is great. I am poor and needy. The less we see the distance between those two statements, the more pride and self sufficiency will be our primary mode, and we won't pray. But reading the Bible shows us this great chasm between our poverty and God's greatness in explicit detail. On one side we see humanity – in our smallness, failures, ugliness, and corruption. Coming down from heaven, we glimpse the glory, excellence, beauty, and justice of God our King seen most clearly in the face of Jesus Christ. The Table It can be easy for us to slip into becoming like the church of Laodicia in Revelation 3:17, we can think “I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked.” Our true state before God is complete and utter helplessness. “But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8) And this leads us to the Table, where we remember that Jesus made haste to deliver us at the cross. He hurried to our rescue. At the proper time, Christ died for the ungodly like you and me. He himself was put to Shame and Confusion. He laid down his life amidst mockery and laughter, so that we could laugh in the face of death itself. Where, O Death, is your Sting?! Remember, God answered this prayer of David and delivered him to the throne of Israel, and he answered Jesus' prayer. Our worst enemies, sin, death, and the devil were ultimately humiliated and ashamed as Jesus rose in victory. And so we continue to pray, come quickly Lord Jesus.

In the world we live in today with all the uncertainty, fear and conflict, it's getting more and more difficult to get that need met.Fortunately, there are organizations out there who are dedicated to helping people learn to hear one another without judgement and condemnation. One of those – Living Room Conversations is an organization that helps people to have safe, peaceful, comfortable conversations about the kinds of issues that we find disagreement about, that we feel a great deal of passion about. This week, I'm replaying Episode #89 – “Living Room Conversations: Connecting Across Divides” my interview with Annie Caplan from Living Room Conversations to remind you of the insights and tools she shared with us to help you get ready for the Finding the Way Out Challenge & the National Week of Conversation.Highlights of our conversation include: dialogue ≠ debateunderstanding doesn't require agreementthe value of listening to learn & understandhow suspending judgement can help us gain new insightsYou can access all the Living Room Conversations resources here: https://livingroomconversations.org/and access their Conversation Agreementsat: https://livingroomconversations.org/conversation_agreements Contact Annie Caplan directly at: annie@livingroomconversations.orgContact Kathleen Oweegon at: oweegon@bridgesofpeace.com to share your ideas and feedback for this show. We have been considering the glorious truth about our Lord Jesus, through the incarnation, being made both a perfect sacrifice in our place for our sin, and Himself being made our High Priest Who presents His sacrifice for us unto God!Because Jesus suffered being tempted like us, yet without sin, He is declared to be a suitable man to represent us before our God as our High Priest.Because Jesus was compassed with infirmities, like His people, He can have compassion upon usThere is a crucial distinction between Jesus our High Priest, and all other earthly priests: whereas Christ's people need an offering for sins, Jesus does not. All other priests had first to offer sacrifices for their own sins, before they could offer up sacrifices for their people's sins. But the drumbeat of the text as it relates to Christ, is that He was tempted like we are, yet without sin, yet without sin, yet without sin!Christ has no sin, He has never sinned, He is perfect in all His ways! He never succumbed to the temptations like we all do, and like Christ knows very well that we all do.Thus, Christ's offering for our sin is different in yet another way from Aaron's, because it needs not to be prefaced with an offering for the priest's sin.At the crucifixion, Christ goes straight to the cross to offer Himself a sacrifice for us as God's Lamb, and there is no stopping off anywhere for Him first to make an offering to purify Himself, for He is always pure, spotless, and undefiled. As the physical types of Christ's sacrifice, the Old Testament animals had to be physically perfect before they could be offered to God.Their perfection was determined by an external examination.

359: Should I be a life coach?

DREAM. THINK. DO.

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 20, 2022 58:59

We're answering the question, “Should YOU be a life coach?” this week.  Why?  Well, according to a recent study, almost half of employees in the US are looking for a new job or plan to soon.   Which suggests that the curious pandemic-era phenomenon known as the “Great Resignation” is continuing into 2022. Specifically, 44% of employees now consider themselves “job seekers,” according to Willis Towers Watson's 2022 Global Benefits Attitudes Survey.   Wow.  That blew me away.  How about you?  As a part of all of this, I've had more and more people ask me whether they should and/or could become a life coach.  So, I wanted to dig into that.  Now, I'll be the first to say that every once and a while... I do a deep dive on a subject that might not be for everyone.  BUT this one is for more people than you might expect. If you listen to DREAM THINK DO, I'm guessing you may have thought about it.  If you're wanting to dream bigger, think better and do more of what you're put on the planet to do… then… there's a really good chance you'd like to see others do that too!  So, if you've had that feeling… it's possible you'd make an amazing coach.  AND… many should become coaches… BUT… not all. That's why I'm doing this episode. I'm going to take you behind the scenes of the coaching industry and I'm going to be straight up with you as I answer some common questions I get about who should become a life coach, business coach or success coach.   I'll shoot straight with you about the industry and WHO would be a good fit... and have a chance to really make an IMPACT and... quite possibly... some serious INCOME from it.   And.... who I'll also share who I think shouldn't try to become a life coach too.  It's going to be a fun… eye-opening… truth filled conversation and I can't wait to get started.  So, let's do this!!! FREE TRAINING: 3 Hours to $3K Masterclass http://www.mitchmatthews.com/masterclass MORE ABOUT THE EPISODE: Why are we talking about whether you should/could become a life coach… NOW?  Well… like I said, in the introduction, LOTS of people are wanting a change.  There are a LOT of things contributing to this… but if 44% of the workforce are now considering themselves “job seekers,” there's a very good chance that MANY of them  are wanting to do something more meaningful.  Something that's more true to their purpose And if YOU are wanting more purpose from your work… there's a chance that you'd love to help OTHER PEOPLE find more purpose and fulfillment too.   So, one of the things that pops to some people's lists is life coaching.   They might think about hiring their own life coach, but they might also be asking, "I wonder if I should become a life coach?" But let's be honest… right from the start!  Some might wonder if it's a scam or a get-rich-quick scheme? NOTE: You can make a LOT of money as a coach but that's NOT the reason to get into it. There are a few BAD coaches out there… BUT what industry do you know that doesn't include a few bad apples who screw things up for everyone?   That's why I like to set the record straight... and try to do our part to make things right! If you wonder whether being a life coach or a success coach is legitimate: You can now get your Masters and your Ph.D. in coaching...  NOTE: Although I don't recommend that and I'll tell you why more in a bit. BUT just the fact that you can get advanced degrees in coaching proves it's needed and that a LOT of people are seeking help! FREE TRAINING: We have some new free training coming up... because I really do want to help people who feel called to become a life coach to keep moving forward with confidence.   BUT I really do want to scare the wrong people away from becoming a coach...  So let's get started! I often get asked, “SHOULD I BECOME A LIFE COACH?” Good question: Is becoming a life coach ideal for you?  More specifically, here are some of the most common questions I get around the idea of becoming a life coach: What does a life coach actually do? Should I get certified as a life coach and/or do certifications matter? Are there too many life coaches and/or is the coaching market saturated? What are some of the things that keeps people from becoming successful life coaches? Question 1: What does a Life Coach actually do? The question seems to be, "What do SUCCESSFUL life coaches actually do?" Because we've all seen those people who seem to be all talk in regards to being a coach, but you're just not sure what they actually do. When someone is curious about this and they're asking about what a success coach actually does… I ask THEM a question that usually shocks them: "Are you willing to shut up?" Yup.  That sets people back a bit… but it's important to ask… especially if someone is wanting to be an EFFECTIVE and SUCCESSFUL Life Coach. Here's why: As a coach… it's good to have systems and processes in place. BUT as a foundation, I believe in a "question-based approach." What I mean is... I'm going to bring a VAST MAJORITY of my value to my clients by ASKING QUESTIONS... as opposed to TELLING them what to do. The main reason for this approach is something I call:  "The Intellectual Immune System ™" This is based on the idea that we tend to reject things / ideas that come from outside us and we tend to embrace things that come from within. Think of a time when you got advice… and you eventually rejected it… because it came from outside you.  Maybe it was advice from a parent, a manager, a friend, a mother-in-law or a complete stranger.  You knew it was good advice… but you just couldn't move forward… because it just wasn't YOU!  Been there?  I sure have! For me… as a Coach… I work with talented... successful people... and most of the time... they know 90% of what they need to do... they just need a safe place to acknowledge that.  Plus, they need a safe place to talk through the ideas... vet those ideas... and vent... and bitch and moan a bit!  We're human.  It's needed!  And for the other 10%... I always say, "We'll figure it out together." As a life coach, my job is to ask questions and create an environment where we can get to their genius.  Now... a key here is: You need/have to:  "Hold people as capable." Some people get into coaching because they can't wait to tell everyone THEIR answers.  BUT... we all know how THAT goes over.  That's why they're not often very successful. People will feel it… if you believe in them… if you believe they can do it... and they often RISE to that. SIDE NOTE: This applies to LEADERSHIP and PARENTING too!!! So... are you willing to ask some questions and then shut up?   If so... there's a very good chance you could be an awesome coach! QUESTION 2: Should I get certified as a life coach and/or do certifications matter? The big question behind the question here is: “What is a life coaching certification for and what is it NOT for? IDEALLY: A well-designed life coaching certification is something that's going to make you more confident and more effective as a coach.  Helping you… so you can help your clients achieve CLARITY… and help them get to their GOALS more quickly. IT IS NOT: A marketing tool or strategy.  Meaning… don't get a life coaching certification to sell your coaching.  Nope.   Here's the straight scoop.  I'm not “anti-coaching certification.”  Heck... I actually created a coaching certification called “The Coach Mindset” and it's helped thousands of coaches around the world.  So, I believe in getting you the training and the tools you need to be a confident and a competent coach! BUT... I'll be the first one to say that the only people who seem to ask whether I'm certified are other coaches.   I've never been asked by a potential coaching client whether I'm certified or not.   Why?  Because they just want to know whether I can help them or not.  They don't care about a piece of paper on the wall.  They want to know can I help them break through the junk... and achieve what they want to do? So... if you want to grow in your confidence as a coach... find a program that's a great fit for you!  But don't invest in a coaching training program because you think THAT accomplishment will wow potential clients.  It won't.  Much like adding letters behind your name JUST to impress people doesn't tend to work either.  (Sorry… not sorry!) It's the WORK that makes a difference.  It's whether you can help someone get the job done that moves the needle!  So, invest in a training program that helps you DO THE WORK!  Don't invest in a program because you think it's fancy title or HUGE investment will impress people.   Make sense?  I'm hoping so.   One more side note on this before we move on.   If you're looking for a training program,  I'd also really recommend that you find a life coach certification that includes BUSINESS training... as well as coaching training.   Because… to be honest... most people who are attracted to the idea of coaching find that the coaching strategies come more easily to them.  They'll be quick to say they need MORE help on the business-building side... than they do on the coaching side.   But MOST coaching programs don't include business training... so be really careful there!!!  In fact, that's something Brendon Burchard asked me about when he interviewed me about my work with Life Coaches and Success Coaches.  QUESTION 3: Is the Life Coaching market saturated?   I'll sometimes get the question: Are there too many life coaches out there? Let me first run some stats by you:  There are 328+  million people in the US There are 445+ million people in the European Union There are 1.4+ billion people in India There are roughly 8 billion people in the world 8 BILLION people.  That's so big… it's hard to get your head around.  That's a LOT of people.  Now, I'll be the first to say that not all of those people need coaching and/or not all of those people can afford coaching. EVERYONE would benefit from working with a good life coach, but let's be real.   Let's not say 50%... or 25%... let's just do the math on 2% of those people.  Let's say that 2% of people want a coach.  That's still around 160 million people.  (Think about that number.  If you took all the people that live in Los Angeles, New York City and London… that would just be 21 million people!  So 160 million people is a LOT of people!) And… at the same time… depending on your coaching rates... most coaches can have a REALLY profitable coaching practice with 10 clients at a time.   You can make $100K a year with 10 clients (or less) a month! And A LOT of coaches coach on the side.   I know successful people that kept getting those "Can I pick your brain" requests.   So they decided to get trained up as coaches and they sell their services now and make extra $3K to $10K a month from that.  Heck, one of the members of our coach's mastermind made an extra $50K in one month… coaching on the side of his job as a health care administrator.  How cool is that? So there's a LOT of ways to do this. Here's my best insight on the question of whether there are too many coaches in the world.  Ready?   As you become a Life Coach, your true competition won't be other coaches.   Nope.  Not at all.  The biggest competition is the: “COUCH!” That's right!   As a Life Coach... the BIGGEST competition isn't other coaches... the biggest competition is the "couch."  It's distraction.  It's "going grey."  It's all the things that cause people to tune out, to go numb, to settle. That's the biggest competitor. So, you will need to find ways to inspire and equip people to break free and to want more.  THEN... you can help them to clarify what they actually want and help them to achieve it. Want another BIG shocker from behind the curtain?   The vast majority of the people who hire me as their coach haven't been "coach shopping."  They haven't been googling coaches and then decide on me because of a certification I completed.   Nope, they've either been consuming my content for a while and say to themselves, "When I finally invest in a coach... Mitch is my guy."   Or they're referred to me by people who consumes my content or by past clients. So if you commit to helping people... the right clients will find you!  You can find ways to put out content that's true to you… content that helps people in big or small ways… and clients will find you! And yes… I have a long-standing podcast… but my first paying client came from one of my first blog posts I ever wrote!  A friend forwarded it to him and said READ this.  And that person reached out immediately to get some help! This is what gets me fired up and moving forward.  Because I don't want people to live lives that are less than they were supposed to live or experience.  I want people to find their jam… and rock that thing!  That drives me. I don't compete with other coaches.  I compete with how I performed yesterday.   So, some questions I often ask myself are: Am I finding new ways to serve? Am I finding innovative ways to help? Am I growing... if YES?  Then game on... let's go! If I get caught up in looking at other coaches... or what the world would call "my competition" then I'm toast.  I'm not going to be good to anyone!   Who's with me on THAT?  COMPETE with the YOU from yesterday... and that will keep you growing! QUESTION 4:  What are some of the things that keeps people from becoming successful life coaches? This is a big question because people want to be successful.  So, it makes sense that they're curious about what might get in the way of success! It won't surprise you but part of the answer goes back to the things we've already talked about: Thinking they have to have all the answers!!!   Getting TOO much training and getting caught up in that rat race! Disqualify themselves because they caught up in looking around instead of looking forward. But when I talk about one of the BIGGEST "ditches" that potential coaches often fall into… it surprises people. That is: they're not willing to get paid! Now... you might think I'm crazy but hang with me here! Many of the people I talk to that are interested in becoming a life coach are natural encouragers.  They're the safe place that people come to to hash out ideas, vent or dream big! Heck... if you're one of these people… and there's a good chance you are… maybe you've even had someone say, "Wow.  Why am I telling you this?  I don't tell anyone this." Maybe people have joked you're like a “bartender” because they just tell you stuff!  Or… you have people seek you out because they want to ask you questions, or share ideas or celebrate a big win. Co-workers… friends… family members.  They seek you out! And if that's you… maybe encouraging people comes easy to you. AND… If it comes naturally to you... you tend to dismiss it's value.   Seriously… if you've always done it... it's easy to think EVERYONE does it.  So... you devalue it. SO... some people wind up having trouble with the thought of being paid thousands of dollars for doing something they've always done! NOW... I would argue that with training... you add to your natural gifting and take it to the next level... BUT still... people often wrestle with getting paid really well for something they'd do for free! BUT... I'd argue the FEE is necessary! Sure... it puts food on your table and a roof... (hopefully a very nice roof) over your head.  BUT the fee also helps to bring a level of commitment for the client.   They have skin in the game. They're committed. It's funny… but the person I mentioned that generated $50K in one month was in this category.  When we first started working together… the most he'd made was about $500.  But we started to work together to tweak his mindset and some of his systems and almost instantly… he had his first $5K Client.   Not only was he blown away by getting paid more of what he was worth… BUT he also found that his clients were soooo much more committed to the process! Now... I charge thousands for my packages and I tell them... it's as much for them as it is for me!  Because if they're willing to invest in themselves… that means they're all in and it's go time! So... ask yourself, "Are you willing to get paid well for something you love to do?" QUESTION 5: What do I need to have in place to be a life coach? We'll keep this one short. As a new life coach as well as successful life coach with a sustained practice, you just need a few things: Good training (Focuses on Coaching AND Business!) A good community A personal willingness to experiment (and learn as you go)! Belief you can do it. The chief purpose of life, for any of us, is to increase according to our capacity our knowledge of God by all means we have, and to be moved by it to praise and thanks.-J.R.R. TolkienLast week we looked at Revelation 2:4-5. The Lord shared his heart to the church in Ephesus that he actually wants the same love that they had with Him when they first met. The loving zeal that was in their heart in the beginning. He remembers and asks them to recall that love and repent and return to it….Just so good! And the fact that we occupy space and time in the mind and memory of the living God is unfathomable!!!We will finish the letter to the church in Ephesus with verse 6-7 Yet this you have: you hate the works of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. Michael Fiedel, Managing Director, InsurTech OhioMichael Fiedel is a Managing Director of InsurTech Ohio and a co-founder of PolicyFly, a digital policy management system. Michael's expertise in the insurtech space includes leading product strategy and customer success, along with corporate initiatives across business development and marketing. Highlights from the Show InsurTech Ohio is trying to facilitate the community that has existed in Columbus and Ohio more broadly Andrew Daniels had been working in innovation at Allstate, talked to Ilya Bodner, founder of Bold Penguin, and was given access to the network of the InsurTech community in the state to try to build something sustainable to keep the movement going in the state Michael had been elsewhere in the US, and picked Columbus with his wife to settle down and raise their family, and found a very strong Insurance community in the state There seemed to be a growing sense of partnership in the state around helping raise the profile of Columbus and Ohio more broadly in the Insurance community in the US given how much is going on in the state There's a positive camaraderie across all of the geographic InsurTech communities that have been popping up around the US There are three or four reasons why communities exist "I want to be a part of a community" and talk about insurance with people, so sometimes you have to build it yourself if you want that There are some forward thinking carriers out there, and a lot are in Columbus and OH VCs hubbed in specific places, like Columbus What's missing in Ohio versus some other cities is more of an ecosystem of investment and startup coming in and out of the area, like in NYC or SF Things coming down the road 2021-2022 will be the year of embedded insurance and carriers spinning up with a focus on a very specific demographic Every carrier is searching for ways to be accessible across digital channels, and there is an arms race to try to be as accessible as possible; this has expanded to commercial lines, too, and is beyond the quote process Carriers will run through the standard innovation cycles, but more mature levels like at Progressive and AmFam have studios where they are looking at adjacent spaces they might be able to bring insurance solutions to. Commoditization is an interesting challenge that the industry is facing, especially as more things more digital as price becomes more front and center The hesitation from carriers isn't on innovation, it's that they want to build technology, but don't want to challenge their actuarial model The first wave of InsurTechs that have exited could help clarify what it takes to succeed We talked about Amazon since Insurance is about protecting people and things, and Amazon is the mother of all providers of things, so they will be front and center in much of the conversation around embedded insurance and other, similar ways the industry will change Advice for those looking at moving into Insurance or moving forward with a new idea Get involved in your community, and if you don't have one in your area, reach out to the InsurTech Ohio team for help and guidance so you can build one Talk to experts to learn and grow Don't hoard your idea as if you're the only one thinking of it as those who win is based on speed and passion, so anything that can help make it happen is worth it If you are solo, find others to work with you with complementary skills – there are no successful InsurTech startups that were founded by one person alone Don't be insular, engage This episode is brought to you by Medallia (Medallia.com), and the book series, "The Future of Insurance: From Disruption to Evolution" by Bryan Falchuk (future-of-insurance.com). Today, Associate Pastor Jonathan Gouthier sits down with First Church's Lead Pastor Steve Darr to tackle the topic of Finding True Freedom. In this episode, you'll discover:What it means to live with proper restraintHow our love for God, love for others, promoting the kingdom, and denying self is part of finding true freedomWhat liberation theology means and what the right definition of it isHow the freedom in Christ truly frees usThere is a struggle that goes on in finding true freedom. When we accept Christ into our hearts as Lord of our lives, a struggle begins between the old self and the new. Even our inner being doesn't like change. The old wants to hang on and continue to run our lives. It is our spirits that are regenerated, made new, and not our flesh. When we understand that we can deal better with our failures and faults, we can remain confident in our freedom in Christ knowing that there will be times when we come up short. But the Holy Spirit doesn't give up, He continues to work in our lives giving us freedom through being renewed.

What is going on with the US election?

Welcome to Finance and Fury, the Say What Wednesday edition. This episode is all about answering the question – “What is going on with the US election?” You might think that there is a simple answer – that Biden is the president elect – hard to think he isn’t when we have the media calling him that so it must be true, right? Well he isn’t - to be clear – Biden has won nothing at this stage - whilst he has been called president elect by the MSM – and the associated press has called the election for Biden – this is rather deceitful – it isn’t up to them to call At this stage - unless a candidate concedes - the election remains in play until December 14th when states cast their electoral college votes and each secretary of state certifies that the vote is valid – all of this could end up at the Supreme court to decide – if this happens Trump has a decent chance of winning but until they weigh in – there should have been no official declaration of the election results – Again – whilst the media has called it – it is not up to them – but the media is trying to get it into people’s mind that biden is the president elect – even though he isn’t Biden even gave a press conference in front of a sign of the Office of the President elect – this office doesn’t exist – his PR team must have printed it out – So to recap - unless Trump concedes between now and mid-December – which isn’t likely - Biden hasn’t won anything, no matter what the media tells you So with this in mind – lets take a step back and assess what has occurred with this election and how it may play out from here – based around the legal standings and not just the media’s spin Because based around the presidents that exists due to previous dodgy elections – and there have been many – regardless of what you might be told - it is highly possible that Trump will end up winning the 2020 Presidential election At the moment - the MSM is trying to get people to ignore the voting irregularities not only with this election but past elections in the US - There have been few times in the past where an election has swung in the opposite direction from where the media has officiated – election of Truman was one – in 1948 Chicago Tribune ran a headline that Dewey Defeats Truman – which turned out to be not the case once the election was decided – as well as the 2000 election between Bush and Gore – where votes in Florida were thrown out due to them not meeting the legal requirements – which flipped the state and Bush turned out to win – as well as many cases in the US gilded age So what is going on with the 2020 election – First it is important to know how the US election system works – It is based on the Electoral College – not a popular vote – The Electoral College is the group of presidential electors required by the Constitution to form every four years for the sole purpose of electing the president  Each state appoints electors according to its legislature, equal in number to its congressional delegation – where each state has a different number of electoral votes – Georgia has 16 votes, PA has 20, Texas has 38, CA has 55 – in total there are 538 electors and to get an absolute majority - 270 or more electoral votes are needed Why does this matter? Well – Biden is 20 votes above the majority – but the results of 6 states are currently in question - Georgia, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Arizona – where the margins are very close and some irregularities have occurred – this is 79 votes in total – What are the claims – that voter fraud occurred – but this doesn’t exist – but election fraud does – every election likely has some element of fraud to it or at the very least – glitch related The Heritage foundation has 1,298 proven cases of election fraud – with 1,121 individuals being criminally convicted, with the rest being convicted in civil court – There may have been fraud that occurred this election – but at the very least there are irregularities – despite what the media is saying – many have been proven Lets go back – on the night of the election – Trump was ahead by what appeared to be an insurmountable amount in Michigan and Pennsylvania – 8 points or hundreds of thousands of votes, was up by more than 600k votes in PA in a state with 6m total votes with 85% of the votes counted – he also had a massive position across Georgia, Wisconsin – again – what would be considered enough to be called – as many other states with that margin had been called for Biden – like WA, NY, CA ,etc. Then overnight – when the poll counting was meant to be closed – the gaps all of a sudden disappeared and by the end of the next day of counting – these states had flipped – This alone is a possibility – mail voting results did favour Biden – but in the states with the strictest vote counting requirements – especially when it comes to mail in ballots – like Florida – which had Biden slightly wining – ended up being off by 4 points of 400k votes So this turn in the results did raise some eyebrows - Election integrity is important – we will go through a summary of the claims soon – but I would think that if an election’s results are in question then this should be taken seriously – There are recounts and audits in states that account for 79 votes - to determine if votes that were received after the election deadline were counted as well as verify the results – underway in Georgia, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Arizona - Any one of those states could see Biden end up losing – if he loses even 10,000 votes in some of these states due to some technicality – like the ballots arriving after the deadline - Trump could be declared the winner The BBC did a good article about “Vote Rigging: How to spot the tell-tale signs” back in 2016 – These include- there are too many votes, you have a high turnout in specific areas, large numbers of invalid votes, results that don’t match, delays in announcing results – keep these in mind as we go through the irregularities that exist - As there are many irregulates – too many to run through in detail but I will give the overview – Many oddities – hundreds of signed affidavits across these states – republican poll watchers were turned away from viewing the electoral process – where each side and an independent is allowed to view the counting of ballots – however they were turned away once the next day counting of votes started across the country In Pennsylvania, Michigan and Georgia, poll workers were caught on videoexpelling poll watchers despite knowledge of a court order preventing them from doing so – this is part of the lawsuit filed – because this raises the obvious question — why don’t they want anyone watching them? They boarded up the windows from letting anyone see in – and even after the courts then ruled that this was illegal – they did let the poll watchers back in – but they were only allowed 6 feet from the poll tables positions – so they moved the voting back 10 feet – it does sound suspicious – There were also a number of dead people apparently voting – similar to what happened in the Nixon election – these were enough to change anything – but a lot of these dead people passed away weeks if not years before they would have received their ballot Dominion voting system – either through software glitches or through human interference - 6,000 votes were flipped from Trump to Biden in one county in Michigan – this is true and has been verified Under state laws – Michigan and the other states that flipped from Trump to Biden don’t have any regulations that forces individuals to look at the computer tabulations compared to the paper ballots that they came from for verification purposes – Now – 6,000 votes might not sound like a lot – and you are right – when compared to the popular vote – but this repeated in two or three counties could flip one state – adding 10-20 votes to one candidate – that is where there are razor thin margins in some of these states Also - in one county in Wisconsin - 19,500 votes were switched from Trump to Biden in another so-called glitch -Then there is another similar “glitch” in Georgiathat saw an unspecified number of votes go to Biden that were once again meant for Trump  Can you see the pattern here? These could have all been mistakes or technical difficulties – however every glitch seems to be going towards the Biden camp – because as it stands – I haven’t been able to find one report of a glitch going in the opposite direction Votes counted and turnouts – This election saw the highest number of votes in US history – Biden got more votes than Obama – this is a little surprising – but it can be explained by the hate for Donald Trump when compared to the support for Biden – as that was hard to see anywhere However – there are some irregularities between historical turn outs in some certain swing states that ended up turning Biden - One example of this is 90% turnout in the State of Wisconsin – which would not only be the highest level of turnout in American history In comparison – this was close to the 92% average that we get in Australia where voting is mandatory The interesting thing is that voter turnout has historically been 60% in this state Wisconsin isn’t alone - Compare this turnout to Cleveland in Ohio, a culturally comparable city but with much stricter rules in counting votes – this had a 51% This is an important city to draw a contrast with Milwaukee in Wisconsin – which saw an 84% voter turnout – because both are a Democratic stronghold, have similar demographics – the only major differences are the legislation and enforcement for counting votes – Ohio has historically been the king maker of the US – no president has won the election without Ohio in 14 elections, dating back to 1960 – where there was again a lot of irregularities between Nixon and JFK – however biden bucked this trend in 2020 Because when you look at other swing states – like Ohio or Florida that are contested were in line with their historical voter turn outs around 45% and 77% respectively (2% more than in 2016, or 2008) - But not 30% more than the historical average in turnout that was seen in the states that flipped to Biden over the days following the election – which does seems statistically improbable In addition - A broad study conducted by Judicial Watchfound that 353 counties across 29 states had turnout exceeding 100 percent of registered voters. Eight of these had turnout exceeding 100 percent across the entire state: Colorado, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Vermont – all blue – this can be explained by people moving and not updating their addresses – however it is still a large gap to make up This study was limited to 37 states publishing their voter registration data. This means that, of the 37 states that Judicial Watch had access to, 78 percent of them had turnout exceeding 100 percent.  Discrepancies between votes for the senate, house and the president – Normally about the same – however – there is some suspicion based around the number of comparative Biden-only ballots – Unlike here – in the US they vote for all levels of Government in the election – house, senate and the president In this election - Tens or hundreds of thousands of voters marked their ballots onlyfor Joe Biden – not it is not unusual for people to take an outsized interest in the Presidential election – this occurs in most elections across all states – where the president gets more votes than say a senate cantate – however – what is unusual is the magnitude and in which states this applied - 450,000 people only voted for Biden with no other votes to other party members in a handful of swing states Let’s look at Georgia - In Georgia, there was only a difference of 818 votes between Trump and down ticket Senate races – historically in line with the margins – however – Biden received over 95,000 more votes than the Dems Senate candidate on the ballot deep red states like Wyoming did not see a massive number of Biden-only ballots - were a mere 725 more votes for Biden than the Democratic Senate candidate in the state In total – there are five states with very abnormal levels of Biden-only voting - Pennsylvania at 98,000, Georgia with 95,000, Arizona with 43,000, Michigan with 115,000 and Wisconsin 63,000 Where this gets even more interesting is when comparing this to the Senate and House results - It just seems weird that republicans won seats off the Dems in the house and likely kept a majority in the senate – but yet lost the presidency Republicans won 28 out of 29 competitive House races and flipped three state legislatures, but were somehow unable to win the presidency – To put this into context – apparently Joe Biden receive more votes than Barack Obama - who had a clean sweep of both house and senate in 2008 – but Biden was unable to flip a single state legislature and the Dems lost seats in the house and failed to get the predicted majority in the Senate Late Mail in ballots being counted (technically illegally against state laws) – after the deadline of 8pm on November 3rd Claims and witnesses and as well videos of late mail in being received – whistle blowers from USPS saying they were order to take all ballot in – even if they were received the next day – this goes against what is allowed This is all here say – so to be taken with a grain of salt – but it could confirm the vote count irregularities However - the US Supreme Court’s Justice Alito passed an order that the State of Pennsylvania to segregate any ballots that arrived after 8PM on election night – of which there were 10s of thousands – so this could easily flip the state back to Trump – as it did with Bush in 2000 – if it does – Biden has a bare minimum of 270 – so if one more state flips back – then Trump wins Lets go back to the BBC article about the tell tale signs of a rigged election - there are too many votes (check), you have a high turnout in specific areas (check), large numbers of invalid votes (based on the computer glitches), results that don’t match (check – based around the senate, house and legislative results), delays in announcing results (check – didn’t call the states trump was ahead in for days) – so based around the BBC in 2016 – there are some signs that the election was rigged – but I guess this only relates to African nations – as now they turn a blind eye I bet that you probably haven’t head of any of this – there has been some massive suppression of claims of election fraud – Go back to 2016 – claims were made openly that Trump stole the election – he was a Russian asset – and that the Russians were somehow voting in the election – this was fine to report on at length But this time around – even though there are some irregularities which should be questioned – be it just computer glitches – or electoral fraud – this time around you cannot question it – if you do you are a conspiracy theorist and you get blocked on Twitter – even though Trump being a Putin puppet was a massive conspiracy the media perpetuated on the people of the world for over 3 years – where a lot of people still believe this In summary - Trumps still has a chance to win – It is a possibility – might be small now – but the media is setting up the narrative – that if he wins it will be a coup Regardless – things are going to get messy – Either Biden wins – or trump wins – but either way 50% of the US population won’t accept the results – This is bad – as it is the breaking of the country further – it was already divided – people may blame trump for this – but who gives him the image that he has? He doesn’t do a great job himself – but remember – he isn’t a life long politician – he has been a businessman in the services industry his whole life – from hotels, apartments, golf courses, restaurants – all about providing a service and selling these services – he is a braggart – and speaks in platitudes – which is where his lies come from But since when did personality matter for the outcome of the people? As long as a leader creates a good outcome – does it matter he hits twitter at 2am spouting off some misspelt tweets – the MSM would make you believe it does He may be hated as a person – and this is understandable - but he has provided a good result for the American people – whilst at the same time being the focus point of the MSM and powerful tech monopolies to divide the population through pointing out his personality flaws But back to the election - I personally think this result may come down to the Supreme Court’s justices – which are currently 6-3 Republican to Democrat - Roberts may absolve herself – but the conservatives still hold the 5-4 majority – especially with how Joe Biden stood against Clarence Thomas – the second African American to ever be nominated to the court the ultimate arbiter in court rulings on elections favours Trump – doesn’t mean he is certainly going to win – but provided he doesn’t concede - the odds do favour him for winning a second term – will find out come December 14thwhen states cast their electoral college votes and the supreme court makes a ruling   I hope this helped to clarify things.   Thank you for listening to today's episode. Robin Rosenberg became "Bobbie" for two reasons. First, no way could she trademark Boat Sauce without an added word, and secondly, she was "Aunt Bobbie" to one of her friend's children, so Bobbie just seemed right. An eight-week tour through the Inside Passage of the waterways of the Pacific Northwest by a friend gave Robin a chance to sail part of that tour. Starting from a remote fishing village, she spent a couple of weeks sailing a very remote part of the world. The friend caught a fish during that time and asked Robin what to do. She recommended grilling it, then went down into the galley, cleaned out the refrigerator and found the "stuff" that needed to be cleaned up and used it to start a concoction. Of course, the trial and error led to the invention of the Boat Sauce. The unique event became the unique food product; she pretty much decided right there on the boat she was going to make the product, call it Boat Sauce and that - was that. When she returned home to Portland, Oregon, Robin started experimenting in her kitchen with fresh chiles, ginger and all the other non-fresh ingredients that were on the boat. Robin took the first batch to our very own Sarah Masoni, who knew right away she was sampling something different and good. Encouraged, Robin pushed forward, visiting Sarah more than once during the development of the current sauce. Robin now works with a co-packer, as that business model worked best for her situation. Why is it so hard to walk away from something that hurts us? Is it the pull of the familiar or the fear of the unknown? Unwanted sexual addiction holds us captive, yet we are called to freedom. In this episode, we’ll explore a 5 Step look at finding that freedom. Dan Keefer, a counselor, and member of the Regeneration Ministries Team joins Josh and Kit to expand on “Leaving Egypt finding God in the Wilderness Places” by Dr. Chuck DeGroat. The teaching comes from looking at the Israelites journey from captivity to freedom and what we can learn from it. The Bible shows us getting from Point A to Point B is not always easy. Thank God for that. This conversation examines the Israelites – the slavery they were walking away from, their meandering through a desert, and how it mirrors our walk away from the bonds of addiction and the lostness we can feel as we keep moving further away from it.Looking back at their walk is an encouragement compelling us forward when, like them, we have no idea what’s ahead. You’ll want to listen in as Keefer also shares practical tips and a prayer for your journey ahead.Pushing past the promises of the addiction and Finding Freedom is the focus of today’s episode of “Becoming Whole.”Highlights:we find security in what’s familiar even when it may be at the cost of our freedomthere was a real desire, even at that point, to return to what they knew even though they were enslaved. With just eight months to go in his term as chief of the Toronto Police Service, Mark Saunders seems to have surprised everyone by abruptly resigning — without fully explaining why. He’s had some health issues, including a kidney transplant, but he said that’s not why he’s leaving.“Family is the most important thing to me right now. And sorry if anyone’s shocked in a bad way. ... But there are a whole host of reasons. And at the end of the day, it’s a whole bunch of things, but it’s going to be good to be a dad.”Mark Saunders, Toronto police chief“Family is the most important thing to me right now. And sorry if anyone’s shocked in a bad way,” Saunders said late Monday. “But there are a whole host of reasons. And at the end of the day, it’s a whole bunch of things, but it’s going to be good to be a dad.”Related: Gary Younge on Europe and the US: There is no 'better' form of racismReporters kept asking, why now? But Saunders refused to explain more.“Mark Saunders himself probably feels like, that he doesn’t necessarily want to engage in another round of conversation and potential reform, and that it may be better left to someone else who would have more time left at the service,” said Akwasi Owusu-Bempah, who studies policing as an assistant professor at the University of Toronto.Saunders was born in England to Jamaican parents who moved the family to Canada when he was a child. He was appointed chief by the Toronto Police Services Board in 2015.Owusu-Bempah said Saunders’ main competitor for the position back then was also black, and that candidate was seen as more progressive, with more ties to black communities. In contrast, Owusu-Bempah said Saunders was seen as more of a “cop’s cop,” since he had overseen the homicide and guns and gangs task force units.Related: From Minneapolis to Madrid, racial profiling and police harassment costs lives“The board went with Saunders, which signaled to many people in the community that they were going with an enforcement-oriented officer as opposed to a progressive, community-oriented officer,” Owusu-Bempah said. That choice was reflected in what people in highly policed neighborhoods experienced, said Sam Tecle, a community worker in Toronto’s Jane and Finch neighborhood.“I have young people that I work with who tell me they have to think about which way they go to school or to walk with a girl or a young lady so that they know that they're less likely to hit a checkpoint, which means to encounter police.”Sam Tecle, community worker, Toronto, Canada“I have young people that I work with who tell me they have to think about which way they go to school or to walk with a girl or a young lady so that they know that they're less likely to hit a checkpoint, which means to encounter police,” he said.Related: In France, the killing of George Floyd invokes the memory of Adama TraoréThere have been several high-profile incidents of black Canadians being racially profiled and assaulted by police. In 2018, the Ontario Human Rights Commission found that while black people were just 9% of Toronto’s population, they made up 70% of those who died in police shootings. Tecle said Saunders helped maintain the status quo.“He provides a certain kind of cover for those who believe that representation represents change,” Tecle said. “It becomes much more difficult to get certain calls to be made on the behalf of black and racialized Indigenous folks because so often, the retort is that ‘there's a black police chief.’”But after George Floyd’s death, Saunders declared that incremental change was no longer enough. He knelt with protesters in the street. And by stepping away from his position, Tecle said Saunders has left an opening — for possible change.Related: America’s BLM protests find solidarity in South Korea“It is a moment of possibility,” he said. “This is the beginning, I think, toward thinking that policing may not be an institution to which we should continue to invest — if black lives really do matter, as so many of our corporations and our colleagues at work and our bus drivers and our city councilors have proclaimed on social media.”The protesters have already won some change. Earlier this week, Toronto’s mayor committed to putting body cameras on all officers — maybe even by this summer. And some city councilors have taken up protesters’ calls to “defund the police.”

Thursday 28th May 2020 The Australian dollar lost ground today as China threatened to ban imports of Australian coal. Phil Dobbie asks NAB’s David de Garis whether it’s in-part because they want to move away from imported coal, or is it a punishment for siding with the US? There’s also discussion about the new stimulus deal for Europe. It has to be debated and agreed by all EU members next week but markets have taken it as a big step forward. And how much optimism is there amongst Australia businesses post COVID-19 – the forward expectations from today’s private capital expenditure numbers will be a strong indicator of that.

If you work in the healthcare industry you have a huge responsibility when it comes to managing sensitive patient information, whether you're a big software vendor or a single physiotherapist, everyone needs to follow the same rules, and there are some pretty serious consequences for not doing it properly.  Do you know what your obligations are and if you're doing a good job? Check this episode out to find out!   Who is Anna Johnston Anna Johnston is one of Australia's most respected experts in privacy law and practice. She has qualifications in law, public policy and management, and 26 years' experience in legal, policy and research roles.  Anna has a breadth of perspectives and a wealth of experience to dealing with privacy and data governance issues. She is the former Deputy Privacy Commissioner for NSW, so she knows the regulator's perspective and since 2004 is the Director for consulting firm “Salinger Privacy”. Anna has been called upon to provide expert testimony before various Parliamentary inquiries and the Productivity Commission, spoken at numerous conferences, and is regularly asked to comment on privacy issues in the media.   Anna holds a first class honours degree in Law, a Masters of Public Policy with honours, a Graduate Certificate in Management, a Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice, and a Bachelor of Arts, plus a number of other relevant and well regarded certificates and industry associations.  In this Episode you'll learn 2:08 - About Salinger Privacy 4:55 - Privacy Concerns in Data (with a focus on health tech) 8:15 - All about, privacy reviews, data flows, data governance, and privacy design 14:28 -AI - How does it fit ethically, legally and is policy keeping up with innovation  16:40 - AI - GDPR, challenges for AI with diagnostic decisions   20:10 - AI - Transparency, Accountability and Consent 26:00 - Legal Obligations with Data Privacy Key TakeAways When it comes to privacy law in Australia, the same laws and consequences apply to everyone dealing with healthcare information - whether they are a big institution of a single doctor. While Data Privacy breaches do happen they are often the result of lack of education and or the best intentions in mind, not so much because of malicious intent Often AI is trained on data that was collected not for the intention of training the machine, so the concept of informed consent is a tricky one  The simple “tick this box to agree” actually isn't enough and more emphasis needs to be put on clearly communicating clearly with the person who's data is being collected The expectations of patients data privacy holds the health and medical industries to the highest levels of scrutiny meaning that breaches are to be reported to the Price  Commissioners office and the patients whose privacy has been breached   Links Anna Johnston Twitter - @SalingerPrivacy  Anna Johnston LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/anna-johnston-ba188410a/ Notifiable Data Breaches Scheme - https://www.oaic.gov.au/ndb  GDPR - https://www.oaic.gov.au/privacy/guidance-and-advice/australian-entities-and-the-eu-general-data-protection-regulation/  MSIA - https://msia.com.au/  Salinger Privacy - https://www.salingerprivacy.com.au/  My Health Record (Formerly PCEHR) - https://www.myhealthrecord.gov.au/  NDIS - https://www.ndis.gov.au/  National Health and Medical Research Council - https://www.nhmrc.gov.au/    Transcript [00:00:00] Pete: With me today is Anna Johnson. Anna is one of Australia's most respected experts in Privacy Law and practice. She has qualifications in law, public policy and management and 26 years experience in legal policy and research roles. Anna has a breadth of perspectives and a wealth of experience in dealing with privacy and data governance issues. She's the former deputy privacy commissioner for New South Wales. So she really knows regulatory perspective well, and since 2004 is the director for consulting firm Salinger Privacy Anna holds a first-class honours degree in law, a masters of public policy and honors a graduate certificate in management a graduate diploma of legal practice Anna Bachelor of Arts plus a number of other relevant and well-regarded certificates and Industry associations, Anna no longer practices as a solicitor so I am allowed to tell the occasional lawyer joke apparently which is great because that's what I'll probably do Anna thanks so much for joining. [00:01:06] Anna: Thanks Peter great to be here. [00:01:07] Pete: I think we came across each other because you were doing some stuff with MSIA a before the Medical Software Industry Association. [00:01:15] Anna: Yes, I presented at their annual conference recently and then also ran a workshop about privacy by Design so for anyone in that space of Designing health-related technology how to understand the kind of the skills and strategies that will help you build privacy compliance into the design upfront rather than trying to retrofit later.  [00:01:39] Pete: Love to get into more of that detail a bit later on in the conversation too. So, you know you're well well primed for the health Tech space and it's kind of cool to have someone on the show that you know is involved in many different Industries. You're not a vendor you're another player in this kind of big space in an area that's super important these days in our area of Health Tech being data privacy and security and whatnot. So I'm super excited about this conversation. So tell me a little bit more about Salinger Privacy what you guys do and where your clients operate? [00:02:13] Anna: Sure. So well basically we do all things privacy, so we do consulting, training, and we offer resources and one of the things I love about working in the Privacy space is It's just a fascinating intersection between law ethics and Technology. There's you know, there's always something new. There's always a new technology you coming around the corner that we have to get our heads around and help our clients manage that intersection between their Legal obligations ethics customer expectations and then you know what the technology can and what the technology should be allowed to do so, we work across as I said Consulting, training, and resources and we are an Australian business, we've got clients across Australia occasionally we dip our toe into the waters of New Zealand as well. But our clients come from their quite the mix. So, quite a lot of government clients but also businesses from the big end of town, to the nonprofits and also the small and very much Tech startup space. So we have clients everywhere from the kind of you know top ASX companies down to you know, one person's got a great new tech idea with working out of their spare bedroom at the moment kind of space. [00:03:28] Pete: Nice as to how much of it do you reckon is in that Health space? [00:03:34] Anna: Yeah health is really common as probably the second biggest sector after government. Although of course, you know often government is also in the health sector. So sometimes our clients will be the health service provider. So someone directly in that Health Service provision space and they just want to make sure they're dotting their I's crossing their T's in the way that they're collecting and using their patients data, but more typically where, not so much that direct service provision, but all the organizations that use and collect and hold and store health information. So sometimes that's insurance companies for example, sometimes it's governments working in public policy organizations getting into the data analytics space so focusing particularly on you know health and disability data for example, and then there's been some really big-ticket kind of projects we've worked on. So we worked on the Privacy impact assessment on the original design for My Health Record, back when it was originally called the Personally Controlled Electronic Health Record the original setup of the National Disability Insurance Scheme. So we've been involved in privacy impact assessments very early on in those very very big-ticket government projects which touch on health and disability data in particular. [00:04:55] Pete: So in health in particular then what are some of the biggest privacy concerns you see today that the pop-up. [00:05:02] Anna: So what I think is quite interesting about the health sector and it makes it different to other sectors is the health sector is a standout but in a bad way, unfortunately, so the health sector consistently tops the list of sectors reporting notifiable data breaches in Australia. So and when we talk about a notifiable data breach we're talking about when personal information has either been lost. Subject to unauthorized access or subject to an unauthorized disclosure [00:05:33] Pete: because it was those relatively recently wasn't it that want kind of recently that was something change that meant that companies needed to be more transparent with that kind of thing. [00:05:43] Anna: Yeah absolutely so the law was changed in February 2018. To make notification of it. So if you have this kind of data breach and if it's likely to result in serious harm to one or more individuals. It's now the law in Australia that you need to notify both price commissioner's office and those affected individuals, so your patient. [00:06:03] Pete: It's not just big companies or small companies. [00:06:05] Anna: So in the health sector at covers any health service provider regardless of their size. So you might be a one-person physiotherapy business, you know or an independent Locum you uncovered by the federal privacy act. So regardless of your size all Health Service Providers are covered. Outside the health sector, there is an exemption for small businesses. But that exemption does not apply to health service providers. So the health sector is already called out for I guess expectations of a high level of privacy protection for businesses no matter their size in the health sector just because of you know, patient's expectations. And so I think one of the things that makes the health sector different is patient expectations, so it's not that the type of privacy risks or privacy issues are different for health technology, for example, technology design as for any other type of Technology design, but the difference is that patients expectations about the protection of their Health Data are much higher. There's just this sort of intuitive if it's my health information. It must be kept absolutely private, but also the consequences of privacy breaches tend to be higher when you're talking about health information compared with say, you know, The Accidental disclosure of someone's credit card details. Yeah, there are some financial risks. But those risks can be resolved, you know relatively straightforward way. I don't want to minimize those risks, but it's quite a different story in terms of the repercussions individuals can face if their health information is disclosed without Authority. So that might be it could be discrimination embarrassment implications for their employment implications for insurance and all the rest. That's what makes the challenges for people working in technology into the health sector and technology so much higher not that as I said, not that. The nature of the Privacy risks themselves are terribly different. It's just that the expectations are higher and the consequences are worse if you have a data breach. [00:08:17] Pete: So you mentioned that you guys do privacy reviews. What is a privacy review exactly? [00:08:24] Anna: So we did two different kinds so one is called a privacy impact assessment and the other is generally called a privacy audit or a privacy compliance review and the difference really is where you're at in the design process for what we're reviewing. So if you are at the design stage of a new project new technology project, for example, we get in at the design stage and do what's called a privacy impact assessment. If you want us to review something that's already up and running. So your business as usual. We basically call that a privacy audit but regardless of which one of those we doing. We ask the same kind of questions and regardless of whether its the design of the software. It might be the design of a business process. It might be the design of a paper form. It doesn't have to be, you know, a high-tech project to need this kind of review. So regardless of the nature of the project we tend to ask the same questions so you know can and should we collect this data can and should we use it for this particular purpose who can we disclose it to? How do we keep it safe? So when we look at a new project, for example, we look at two broad things one is data flows and the other is data governance. So when what I describe as data flows what we're looking at is. What personal information is being collected? How is it going to be used? Who will it be disclosed to so those three points collection use and disclosure and for each of those we then ask is this going to be appropriate meaning is it going to be lawful? So is it going to comply with the Privacy principles that govern collection use and disclosure but not just is it going to be lawful? Is it going to meet your customers? You know your patients expectations. Is it going to be proportionate to a legitimate business need and is there critically, is there a more privacy-protective way you can achieve that business objective? Yeah, so always trying to come up with you know, helping our clients come up with the most privacy-protective design of a technology of a form of whatever it is but in a way that still achieves the businesses objectives. So once we've settled those questions about authorizing the data flows and making sure that there are lawful and appropriate then we look at data governance. So we usually start with looking at transparency. So have you communicated clearly to your customers about those data flows? You know how their personal information is going to be collected used and disclosed so that they actually understand what's going to happen. You know, I talk about the no-surprises rule no one likes to be surprised what's going to happen with their data and if they have if they're going to have choices is there a really easy way for them to manage those choices? You know, is it as straightforward as a swipe left or right on the app to say yes or no to something and one thing that's really important is in terms of transparency is for organizations to separate out what we see is three different things but often bundled together. So those three things are your privacy policy a collection notice explaining. At the point of collection what it is you're doing with the person's information and a consent mechanism if you're going to rely on consent, so those three things serve three quite different purposes, but especially online. The design practices often companies will jumble the three all together into one long legalistic confusing document and then they make users just tick agree [00:11:55] Pete: Tick a box and you can and you can click the link. Click the link to go read it that you it's not down the bottom. [00:12:02] Anna: Yeah, and we know no one ever reads it, I don't even read them. So we so in terms of data governance. We look importantly transparency. And then finally we look at other data governance questions, like have your staff being trained. Do you have a clear pathway for managing any requests you get for patients to access their data or correct it do you have a clear pathway for managing privacy complaints. Do you have a data breach response plan in place to your staff know what to do in the event of a data breach, so. All of those things that of data flows and data governance form part of whether we're doing a privacy impact assessment of a new project or a privacy audit of an existing business process and again, whether its software or something else, we look at both data flows and data governance as part of our privacy review. [00:12:53] Pete: And if I think about it from my experience. Often, you know, if I'm thinking as a health Tech vendor not many of them go out with any kind of massive intention on I don't know to steal patients information or doing something cynical with the data, but I've seen in the past two, it's not about the intention of what they're going to do with it, but it's almost the perception of what's going to happen or so having that kind of review or someone outside of the business to do that sounds like a pretty sensible thing to do. [00:13:23] Anna: Yeah, absolutely and certainly my experience having worked in you know, in a regulatory role in the primes Commissioner's Office the vast majority of privacy complaints and the vast majority of privacy breaches and data breaches are not coming from a point of malicious conduct or deliberately people doing the wrong thing. It's accidents and it's oversights and its people simply not understanding what their obligations are. Understanding that there are alternative ways to design things. So absolutely. Yeah. I very very rarely see privacy breaches arising from deliberate misconduct. Yeah. It's much more coming from a place of ignorance and sometimes people trying to do the right thing, you know trying to be helpful in trying to help the clients but accidentally doing the wrong thing. [00:14:20] Pete: Yeah, that can happen in health care too. Can you just send this across to me? I really need it because of this particular situation or something. Yeah. [00:14:27] Anna: Yeah. Absolutely. [00:14:28] Pete: It seems to be the right thing to do. It's a balance. So I'm thinking about that In our world AI artificial intelligence that's a big point of discussion regarding privacy for me anyway at the moment. How well do you think policies keeping up with the rate of pace of innovation in Australia more broadly as AI is really Innovative space and there are other things going on too, how's policy keeping up. [00:14:50] Anna: I think there's a constant challenge whether it's AI or any other kind of new technology. There's always this challenge of Law and policy keeping up. The first point I'd make is that privacy laws are designed deliberately. They're drafted deliberately to be technology-neutral and format neutral. So the idea is that they shouldn't actually be always playing catch-up. We've tried to anticipate in the drafting of our privacy laws technologies that haven't even been thought of yet and our starting point with those laws is Broad framed general kind of principles and it's all about respecting humans autonomy and dignity. So sort of one answer is the law is keeping up because it's it was already anticipating new technologies and that those new technologies should be being managed Under the Umbrella of existing laws and policies. But at the same time obviously the law is constantly being challenged in terms of how workable it is in practice and certainly with artificial intelligence the ethical and legal implications are something that not just in Australia but governments around the world are grappling with right at the moment. So there are projects trying to come up with legal and ethical frameworks to cover AI here in Australia the federal department of innovation and industries been working on something there are projects in the EU there are projects in the US There's a lot of activity going on at the moment and lots of those projects around the world are focusing on things like the fairness of AI as well as transparency. So in particular in Europe some of your listeners. May have heard of the GDPR are already. So that's a privacy law in Europe that was recently reformed the general data protection regulation and one of the reforms that was introduced is what you might call a right to algorithmic transparency. So that means that's kind of the laws way of trying to ensure that algorithms developed from AI from machine learning and from AI will be fair and accountable in terms of the impact of decision making that is made or decisions made based on those algorithms. So there's kind of a right to human review of computers decisions and there are rights to ask companies to pause or stop the processing and we would call that using or disclosing someone's personal information in order to ask for an explanation of well you know, how is this algorithm? Working so why you know, why was I denied health insurance or why is it why my premiums going up and my next-door neighbors are going down for example. [00:17:49] Pete: and its even more like as we're moving to space where artificial intelligence is assisting the process of Diagnostics and looks at an image and says this patient has cancer or not. You know that having that in a black box is not you know, and then just you know, let's ask the computer and wait to see what. Is it so much ambiguity there? [00:18:12] Anna: Yeah, absolutely. And in a legal sense, I think courts will increasingly struggle with this as well. If someone is challenging a decision, so it might not be the you know, the diagnosis but maybe it's the health insurers decision based on the diagnosis. You know, we're going to pay your claim or we're not going to pay your claim or whatever it is. You know based on some kind of calculation of risk of that disease developing for example, or you know, if the algorithm can't be explained to a court if it can't be explained to a judge. How is anyone going to be able to determine whether that algorithm was working in a fair and accurate way so one of the really critical privacy principles is it's called the data quality principle or the accuracy principle and it says that each of us has the right to ensure that only accurate relevant up-to-date complete not misleading information is used in decision-making about us and that obviously. Becomes more critical, you know the rubber hits the road where the decision is going to impact us negatively. So the decision is going to be you don't get the insurance or we don't pay your claim. You don't get the job. You don't get access to housing you don't get access to credit for example, and so if you've got decisions made in a black box and no one can explain how they're made because. Yeah, there was some machine learning going on in the AI system came up with its own algorithm. How can anyone test how can a court test whether or not that decision making and the data on which it was based was, you know accurate Fair relevant up-to-date Etc. So that's certainly one big challenge for AI that the sort of the transparency and the accountability for it and I think the other Big Challenge or the other area where AI poses a challenge in terms of compliance with Privacy Law is the lawfulness of the data flows in the first place. So, you know, it's when I was talking about when we do a privacy review we're looking at the data flows meaning what personal information is collected, how it's used who it's disclosed to and in the world of AI your ability to lawfully collect use or disclose data. It's extremely hard to rely on consent as your lawful mechanism consent isn't is by no means not this by no means the only lawful mechanism. There are lots of ways under the Privacy principles that allow companies and governments to collect use and disclose personal information. But quite often consent is what organizations try to rely on but in AI it's really challenging. So if you think about do you do example AI is being used to diagnose some health conditions? Yeah, much of the data. Used in the first place to train the machine learning that will create the AI will create the algorithm that training data what we call a training data will have been collected for some other purpose. So it will have been years worth of data collecting about real hospitals being treated in real patients being treated in real hospitals. That and that becomes the training data set for the machine learning. So it's fairly likely that the patients in the past were not asked to consent but that time to sometime in the future use of their data for this quite different purpose. [00:21:56] Pete: That's something that wasn't even thought of at the time. [00:21:59] Anna: So it's not just about treating you at some point in the future a machine will use your data to train another machine to recognize patterns in data, so but even now if we started to ask patients for their consent, you know as well as us treating you in hospital today. Do you consent to your information being used for AI development in the future? How could a patient today possibly give informed consent? Because the whole point of machine learning and AI is to kind of throw all the data in the mix and just see what pops out it's not a kind of if you like old-fashioned kind of you know, he's a research by hypothesis. This is the question we're asking here's exactly how we're going to conduct the experiment. Yes. So it's not like a clinical trial whereas a patient. I know what my disease is. I'm being offered a new kind of medicine. I've been warned about the possible side effects, and I've had the chance to say yes or no AI and machine learning at based on quite different kinds of research practices, which don't usually involve. That kind of one-on-one sit-down discussion with an individual. It's based on very very large data sets to create those training data sets. It's based on historical data. And typically you don't go back and you don't have the ability to go back and ask for everyone's consent. It's very difficult to rely on patient consent as the lawful basis for health information to be collected used or disclosed for AI purposes. As I said, it's not the only possibility but quite often companies work on the assumption that consent is going to be their legal mechanism and it turns out not to be.Kind of the pragmatic solution for them, but I don't think that that's something that's particularly. Well understood yet. [00:23:52] Pete: What is the solution then like if consent isn't it? Like how does a company doing AI in health or any area I guess operate? [00:24:01] Anna: so there are other legal mechanisms and one of them is and it depends, you know, which Privacy Law you're talking about which jurisdiction you're in but there's usually some kind of research exemption and that usually, again it differs kind of from state to state and federal and Country to country but the research exemptions usually have some role for human research Ethics Committee which gets to weigh up the ethical considerations. Think about where the public interest lies and that committee usually has the power to waive the requirement for consent. There is this kind of structured way to work through thinking about those issues and the National Health and Medical Research Council has guidelines on you know how to set up a human research Ethics Committee and what a properly constituted committee looks like and all of the factors that they need to, you know, there are guidelines about how they need to reach their kind of decision making, so it's not as simple as simply you know, those the tick a box mandatory terms and conditions. That's not going to constitute a valid consent in Privacy Law. So that's just not the right legal mechanism in the most in the majority of cases for artificial intelligence kind of development.  [00:25:25] Pete: Wow so much complexity to factor in and you can going through even just the tip of the iceberg of all of that you can see a lot of work underneath it and questions and kind of vagueness that kind of speak to the reasons why the rate of innovation moves so much faster than other areas that are important like Policy. That's really interesting. Hey look so moving on what should Australian health tech software vendors be most concerned about when developing a solution today then. [00:26:01] Anna: I think first of all make sure you're thinking about both your legal obligations and your customers expectations, you know, the law is by the law. I'm talking about the Privacy principles built into Privacy Law the law tries to codify your basic ethical obligations, but it really sets the minimum kind of standard and often your customers expectations will set a higher standard than just legal compliance. So legal compliance is obviously necessary, but it really should just be considered the minimum Baseline not the entire set of things that you need to think about. I mentioned before the role of consent is in reality quite fraught so if you are relying on your patients consent to do something with their health information you absolutely need to make sure that that consent is actually going to be valid under privacy law you know, it will hold up to scrutiny. So you can't under Privacy Law. You can't say that you're relying on a patient's consent if they actually had no choice to say. No, it has to be voluntary. It has to be informed it has to be specific So it can't be included in mandatory terms and conditions, for example, an opt-out model is not consent. For example, so as I said consent is not the only legal mechanism. There are plenty of other mechanisms. But if that's the one you're relying on you need to be really careful to get that right and another thing is to make sure that your technology has been designed with privacy in mind. So we talked about this concept of privacy by design which is all about baking your privacy controls into the design of systems from. The beginning rather than trying to you know retrofit them in later and I think well what I find usually is a lot of effort goes into the cybersecurity side of things, you know, keeping out the external Bad actors and that's obviously incredibly important but our particular kind of expertise and our skill set is focused more on the internal actors so when you are whether you're designing tech your configuring it implementing it you need to think about your customers but also about your staff or your trusted users your trusted insiders. So making sure that Tech is designed so that its staff or other authorized users only see the absolute minimum amount of personal information about your customers or your patients that they really need to do their job, you know, the legislation says that you have to do this a lot of people come back and say oh, we've got a code of conduct for our employees. We make the more sign it so that's okay. The law says that that is not enough and you know case law comes basically the law that comes from Court decisions and tribunal decisions backs that up that just having you know, letting all staff see all patient records but saying oh, but they signed a code of conduct that's not going to be enough You won't be complying with your privacy legal obligations if that's all you're doing. So you need the same things like role-based access controls, but there's a whole bunch of other privacy controls that can be built into Tech design and it will depend on the kind of product you're or service that you're designing But depending on what it is you're doing, you know, if you're if you've got a data analytics project and using a data warehouse, for example, we would look at filtering out certain data fields. And then we'd look at masking other data fields from the view of particular user groups. If you think about something like an E-health record system, you would limit the search functionality to prevent misuse, you know, the kind of scenario we're usually looking at is, you know, could a staff member look up health information about their partner or their ex-partner or their next-door neighbour so you might put in a test that users need to pass before they can even access customer records. For example, rather than just enabling any user to do a global search against any customer or patient name, so there's plenty of different things you can do. So we use 8 privacy design strategies to help guide Our advice to our clients when we're reviewing technology design software design and sometimes the solution lies in the design of their technology itself, but quite often it's outside the technology so the solution might be or a mix of you know, staff training policies and procedures back to that transparency issue. So how you communicate with your customers. There are lots of different angles we can come from when we're trying to mitigate privacy risks. [00:30:50] Pete: Wow there's a lot to cover I'm sure there are many people listening and thinking this probably a few things that could be applied in their business in the healthcare space, whether it's they're providing the service or the software that sits behind it. I think it's evident that it that it's something that's important to everyone from that single physio, you mentioned right through to the big organizations have got a lot more structure and process to handle this stuff and even they get it wrong a lot too. So having a dedicated focus in that like you guys is particularly interesting so Thank you for sharing your thoughts and insights on that particular topic. [00:31:30] Anna: Great. Thanks for having me on the show.

3 Invaluable Lessons from Reese Tisdale Water has an impact on every aspect of our lives, so researching this incredible resource is critical. Water market regulation has been soft, but it is changing. Forecasts show, over the next 15 years, it will cost upwards of $15B for water infrastructure repairs and rehabilitation.   This week, host Sue Dyer speaks with Reese Tisdale, the President of Blue Field Research. Reese is an expert on water and its effect on the market and the world around. He shares the politics of how development occurs and water's role in project development.   Reese's Water Journey (01:53) Blue Field Research was founded in 2012. They started the company with the realization that water touches all aspects of our lives from business to personal. They do market research on water for supply companies, investors, and regulators who need more information and insight into what's happening in the water space.   Defining the Water Market (03:58) The water market incorporates all aspects of water (water, wastewater, and stormwater) from supply to discharge. We look at the water market Globally (outside the US), in the US/North America, and Industrial vs. Municipal. When starting the company, we thought most of the work would be outside the US but they were wrong. Demand in the US: There are 75,000 water/wastewater systems in the US and over 3 million miles of pipe in the ground.   The Trends in Helping with Infrastructure (06:33) Systems are old and mapping isn't good -but companies are getting better at that. Forecasts show, over the next 15 years, it will cost upwards of $15 billion for repairs and rehabilitation. The key is rehabilitating more efficiently utilizing technologies in place. Using different material types will help in building and re-building. Focusing on workforce management: the aging of the baby boomers, etc.   Meaningful Predictability of Resources (09:43) Utilizing Artificial Intelligence to make the workforce smarter so they can do other things. The simple need for remote monitoring.   What the Research is Showing (12:30) We are starting to see emerging contaminants (algae blooms, etc.). Impacts on the daily water supply, such as drought. Utilities are trying to understand what's real and what's not.   The Most Insightful Research Bluefield Research Has Done To Date (16:06) Water market regulation has been soft, but it's changing. States are regulating the water market, not the Federal government.   What Bluefield Research Does (19:45) Help companies understand the market landscape (challenges in the market, opportunities to provide treatment or management). Provide off the shelf reports, annuals, inside agreements with clients or bespoke research for clients.   The Difference in the “Water Side” of the Water Market (23:00) They must have enough capacity for new development. The role of industry and commercial business are treating their own water and becoming more self-sufficient. Water rates rose 3.5% last year. Their focus is on how to "reign in" the expenditures of water procurement and discharge. Utilities need to see the trends so they are acting, not reacting.   The Most Difficult Aspects of Water Research (26:23) Being true to the data that's collected. Staying true to our research methodology. Clients challenging results based on their own perspective.   The Very Best Advice Reese Has Ever Gotten (29:42) Look at other companies not from where they are, but from where they started, and measure yourself in the same way.   Reese’s Favorite Piece of Technology (31:21) The Podcast app in his phone. There’s so much to learn, but some of it is just “waves on the ocean” as well.   Resources for Listeners (32:21) Book Recommendation: Cadillac Desert by Marc Reisner   Contact Reese (33:20) Contact Reese on LinkedIn Blue Field Research Website   Reese’s Parting Advice (34:16) Truly think about the cost of the glass of water in your hand and all the assets that go into it. Self Directed Investor Talk: Alternative Asset Investing through Self-Directed IRA's & Solo 401k's

Billions are pouring into U.S. real estate from investors in China… and frequently, those dollars are going into deals that, to me and you, simply make no sense at all.  But there’s method to the madness, and I’ve discovered 5 important things you need to know if you want to do business with investors in China.  I’m Bryan Ellis. This is Episode #203.------Hello, SDI Nation!  Welcome to the podcast of record for savvy self-directed investors like you! It’s Monday, and what a great day to be alive, my friends!  Spring is a spectacular time of year and we here at SDI Radio are champing at the bit for another great week, so let’s get to it!First, let’s hear a bit of wisdom from the ancients, shall we?  Every episode, I share with you a proverb, quote or saying that has stood the test of time, and is important for you and me as self-directed investors.  Here’s today’s proverb:  “A fortune made by a lying tongue is a fleeting vapor and a deadly snare.”Obvious, right?  Don’t lie to get rich, right?  Well sure, but to me, there’s more to that one.  Notice that this proverb doesn’t say that you CAN’T get rich by lying.  Bernie Madoff demonstrated that skillful deception can lead to fabulous wealth.  But Madoff demonstrated the rest of the proverb too… that fortunes made through deception are both temporary and a huge trap.  So clearly, let’s don’t grow our wealth through outright fraudulent deception like Madoff.  But one step further is this:  My view of wealth is stewardship rather than ownership.  Let us take care to be people of few words, and to make sure that the words we speak are careful and true.  There’s no great legacy we can pass to our children than a heritage of honesty… and there’s no better foundation to build wealth than through being wholly truthful in the big things and the little things.Your thoughts on this are welcomed on today’s show page over at SDIRadio.com/203.My friends, this past Friday, Carole and I had a really interesting lunch conversation with the president of real estate services conglomerate who owns over 5 dozen companies, several of whom have likely served some of your real estate needs along the way.I learned quite a bit from that conversation, and one topic in particular stood out to me quite clearly:  The nature of Asian investors who seek to invest in U.S. real estate.  My colleague has first-hand knowledge of the topic, having recently spent time in China and being provided with access to substantial amounts of that capital. Here are the things that I observed from this conversation:Chinese investors prefer hard assets. By hard assets, I mean things like direct ownership of REAL ESTATE.  They seem far less interested in “structured” types of investments like mortgage notes or even hedge funds that purchase real estate.  They want REAL ESTATE – real, direct ownership of it – PERIOD. Their Primary Concern Is Not ROI: Chinese investors tend to be willing to place their capital into investments that, from my vantage point, do not make a large amount of sense.  Many of these investments are relatively low-yielding in terms of cash flow and can easily be beaten by other alternatives.  But ROI is not their primary measuring stick.  Their real measure appears to be SAFETY OF CAPITAL.  The political system in China is such that one’s wealth is essentially and ultimately the property of the government, and to get that money out of their own banking system and into hard assets held in a relatively reliable jurisdiction like the United States represents something even more valuable than a big ROI:  It represents physical safety of the capital itself.  That’s where the focus of many Chinese investors is fixed. It’s Expensive For Chinese Investors to send money to the US: There are substantial brokerage fees to which Chinese capital maybe subject. Chinese Investors Prefer Multifamily Properties: While there is an appetite for other types of real estate also, many Chinese investors prefer multi-family residential properties, as this type of property allows them to deploy larger amounts of capital more easily in a single transaction, while still investing in residential property that is, at its core, fundamentally familiar as a concept. and Finally… Chinese Investors Prefer Specific Local Markets: To the Chinese investor, not all U.S. real estate markets are the same.  That’s clearly correct, but it goes further than that.  Not even all STRONG real U.S. real estate markets are the same.  Generally speaking, Chinese investors appear to be most interested – CURRENTLY – in properties in just a few specific very large markets, with California receiving a particularly large degree of interest. From my vantage point, I feel sympathy for Chinese investors.  What you have is, by and large, people who are very bright and have successfully monetized China’s economy, which is the biggest rival to the U.S. economy in raw size.  But China is a communist country, and so at the end of the day, the government can do anything it wants… including with the wealth of those entrepreneurs and investors who have built fortunes from their own ingenuity.  Their interest in U.S. real estate is as much a function of preservation as investment. We here at SDI are always in search of additional ways to serve Chinese investors looking to deploy their capital into U.S. real estate.  If you have any suggestions, drop me a line at feedback@sdi360.com.And hey – a quick note about our private real estate fund that invests in Northern California real estate.  So many of you have asked about it, so I’ll give you a bit of an update here.  The first quarter of 2016 just ended on Friday and since today is only Monday, we don’t yet have the final numbers back from the accountant.  But I’ll put it like this:  The total net return for the first quarter alone appears to be solidly in the double digits.  That’s not an annualized return… that’s just for the first quarter.  So things are going quite well, largely according to plan.My friends… always remember this:  Invest wisely today, and live well forever! MAY 2012 With his partner Kyoka Ina, John Zimmerman was three time US National Champion, 2002 World Bronze Medalist, and 5th at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics. He's been a Stars On Ice performer, a model, a coach, and is also (with wife Sylvia Fontana) the founder of Karisma Sportswear. He talks about starting skating in an Alabama mall, his role models in Pair skating, and how much fun he had shooting Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. 45 minutes, 22 seconds Win a pair of Women's Pants from Karisma Sportswear! Thanks to Fiona Mcquarrie for transcribing these interview highlights: On his most embarrassing skating moment: I can clearly tell you right now. For me, it was 2001 Worlds. I was very excited, very hyper. Usually Kyoko and I went and did our own thing, just skated on our own, and I went — somehow I caught my heel on crossovers, fell and slid into the wall. On crossovers. Pretty humiliating. Just as we're starting to vie for a position at Worlds. Pretty stupid [laughs]. On how he began skating: I started in a mall rink in 1976 or 1977. My mom was a skater from Michigan. They ended up moving down to Montgomery [Alabama], and on the weekends she wanted to go skating, so she took me to the mall. I just took to it, I loved it. It kept me off the streets and gave me something to do [laughs]. And there was a game room in the mall so I'd go play games afterwards. It was just a fun-filled afternoon for me. By the time I was eight we moved up to Ohio, and I'd done ISI [Ice Skating Institute] competitions, and there I got into USFSA [US Figure Skating Association] competitions, so it got a little more competitive, and that's where it really took off. On starting as a pairs skater: I remember seeing little newspaper articles from when I was about eight, with a girl, but we didn't really skate pairs, we just stroked around a lot and probably argued [laughs]. I didn't start skating pairs until I was 17. Most of the time everyone's pursuing a singles career, and that's the mentality I'm trying to change a little bit. I was 17, I enjoyed it, and it was an attractive idea, wondering if I could compete internationally now, instead of waiting until I got this triple jump or whatever. On being coached by Peter Oppegard, while skating with Stephanie Stiegler: Peter was intense and he had a vision for his teams. I loved it then, but I appreciate it even now. He still has a reputation for being an intense coach, and I think it's great. Peter has a very good way of being able to draw your potential out with his ideas and his intensity, and as long as everyone's on the page, these things work. On working with Tamara Moskvina: She was a master of trying to make the most of things for the team, and she took responsibility for it. A lot of coaches just say, I'm trying to do this, I'm trying to do that, but if the team's not up to par, she feels that she hasn't done something. She hasn't been creative enough, or she hasn't figured out a way to get it to where we believe in it, or figured it out. I remember a couple of times at competitions, she took the blame for it, like, I have not done my job as a coach to get him to understand, or get her to understand. And I'm like, whew, the pressure's off me [laughs]. But as a coach now, I mention that to my teams, but I don't think I'm at the level yet to take full responsibility. I don't know if I can handle that yet [laughs]. On pairs skaters changing partners: It's kind of a delicate situation because you have to stay on the ethical side of things. Usually, like in everything, face to face dialogue and honesty is best. Having a clear game plan with the students, getting clear goals from them, getting them to understand your goals, and if something's not being met, having that be addressed. And everyone needs to know that if it's not being addressed, then there needs to be a meeting, and everyone has to decide which way to go, and everything needs to be clear. When you address another coach, you just go straight up to them and talk to them about it, maybe get US Figure Skating involved, but never to the student. If the student wants to talk to another student, to their friends, then that's one thing to do, but I still think the best way to do it is from coach to coach. On working with Tamara Moskvina, Igor Moskvin, and Artur Dmitriev during his partnership with Kyoko Ina: They harnessed me down a lot in my thoughts and my emotions, which for 90% of the part was great. Sometimes it's good to let a little bit out, a little wildness in a skating program or in how a person goes about their practice or their competition. But they definitely taught me structure of thought, structure of competition and practice, and how to know my body, know myself and what to expect. And at high-level competition, to learn from each mistake and to know your body. Peter brought out a great artistic flair in me. Tamara got it to where I controlled it a bit more, and Kyoko is a technician. She was the go-to person on the jumps, she had extremely efficient skating. I had to work on that a bit more, I was a little bit of a bull in a china shop that way, but I offered a side of it that she didn't have and that she could grow from. Artur was my hero growing up, it was the reckless abandonment of skating, and he had the cool hair and he was big and strong [laughs]. The confidence in his face, and the care for the woman, their cultural way on the stage, in the presence of the audience, of handling the woman — it's more than just skating pairs, it's the whole look. And I aspired to be like him, I wanted to move like him and skate like him. On being a cute boy and then a handsome adult in skating: Well, coming from Alabama, you know, you certainly weren't regarded as a good looking guy, because I was wearing spandex outfits, and if I ever had any friends come to see me, they would make fun of me and think it's silly, I'm lifting up my leg and moving my hand in a balletic way or whatever. I was humbled big time. And then I had a ballet teacher I worked with in Alabama, she was cute and I responded to what she wanted me to do. She was telling me I was looking good, and I was feeling the confidence [laughs]. It gave me confidence in a way I'd never experienced before. But I don't think about looks or anything, I just enjoy doing what I'm doing. And if that portrays a certain look or whatever, that's great. On competing at the 2002 Olympics: We wanted to know what kind of emotions we were going to have walking into it. We had a four-year plan with Tamara, and we worked out the placements we wanted to get. We had good performances and we had moments where we looked like we had two left feet, but the second year we placed seventh [at Worlds]. The third year, we placed seventh again, so we were duplicating that, which was devastating, because we needed to be fifth. So we hit a couple of Grand Prix finals, we did okay, we were there, which was the most important thing. But replicating the seventh place was so bad that we had to go back home and work that much harder. So that last year, in my mind, we worked hard, US Figure Skating gave us great support financially and with anything we needed to be the best. But also, the way we went into that last year, it was like, this is it. This might be the only Olympics I get to go to, and I really dedicated myself. It was intense, but it was so long, it was like ten months. I wanted to be a vegetable on the couch at the end of the day, knowing that I could not have done any more. I was sick of going to competitions and being nervous. So I wanted to go and enjoy myself. And when I was at the Olympics walking around, one of the first days, I was thinking, I'm healthy, I've never been in better shape, and here I am at the Olympics representing my country. [The judging scandal] I don't know if it affected our results that much, but it really comes down to feeling you've done the best you could. A month later, we got the bronze medal at Worlds, but we didn't skate that well, and I don't even hardly remember that performance. The crowning moment of my career was the Olympics, what it meant, and the way we skated. You have a four year plan, and you go four years later and you know exactly where you are. That was cool. But what really irritated me about the whole judging scandal is that there are people who have their own political purposes, and they're using all of us for pawn pieces, you know, from chess, and it does make me sick to think — I come from Alabama, I skated in a mall rink, my dream was to be in the Olympics, and these people don't know that if that little boy had that dream, he could have had the misfortune from someone else's decisions and their political games, and that's kind of unfortunate. Even if it's 13th or 14th place, with the sacred Games that it is or it's touted to be, it's a placement and it should hold a lot more sanctity, I think. On skating in Stars on Ice: It was phenomenal. All of us who were on it, it was our dream to be on these tours. The camaraderie and the ensemble work, it's just cool. It was the best, great lights, great music, intimate setting on the smaller ice. That first year, it was with Katarina Witt, Tara Lipinski, Gorsha Sur and Renee Roca, Jenni [Meno] and Todd [Sand}, Kurt Browning, Scott Hamilton, all these great skaters. Your jaw is dropping, thinking, I can't believe I'm with this group of people, I'm from Alabama, this doesn't make any sense [laughs]. But you feel intimidated, so the thing you'd better do is keep working, and I loved it and wanted to keep on that job. And what cooler job can you have than ice skating and making money doing it? So we always would work really hard to be more capable and to figure out the direction that would keep us unique. On working with his wife, Silvia Fontana: We're together 95% of the time. The only time we're apart is if she's off doing a show in Italy or something or I'm off doing a show. We love it. We coach every day together. We respect each other as athletes and as people, and we learn from each other every day, and make each other laugh. There's no other place I'd rather be than by her side, anywhere. On being on the Queer Eye for the Straight Guy TV show: When I got the call, they called my agent, I wasn't sure, I was like, isn't this the show where they cut the guy's hair off all the time? No, thank you. I wrote that in the contract, can you believe that? Yeah, you can do the show but you're not going to cut my hair [laughs]. I didn't know what to expect with those guys, it was a four-day taping , and it was like a hurricane. They come in, and you're supposed to only interact with them on camera, because everything has to be spontaneous. So we could be in different rooms for two hours, setting up the scene, and then meeting and being spontaneous [laughs]. Oh, wait, can you make that reaction again? Burst in the door and be surprised [laughs]. But we enjoyed the show, we got a ton of things out of it, great exposure, and we loved the guys. We still see Carson [Kressley] every once in a while. On being on the Skating with Celebrities TV show: It was cool, but it was intense. Since I had already been on one reality show, I figured it was going to be staged. It wasn't, and it was a lot more competitive than you'd imagine. Especially Lloyd [Eisler] and I, coming down to the wire in the end, we were doing a lot of these crazy moves that we shouldn't have been doing with people who hadn't really skated [laughed]. I did the same kind of show two years ago in Russia, Night on Ice. I got to skate with Leo Tolstoy's great-granddaughter, which was kind of cool, but it was four and a half months long, 15 episodes, which was like forever [laughs]. On running the Karisma sportswear line: It's been a lot of fun, and it's certainly a direction I never thought I would go, women's sportswear [laughs], but . . . Silvia started it a few years ago. She was teaching in Italy when I was teaching there as well, and she gave a present to a skating mother over there, it was a little skating dress, and they talked about starting their own company over there, which they did [laughs]. They wanted a nice, upscale, very beautiful Italian representation for figure skating, something that looked classy and elegant, and cute, and something made with the best materials in the world. So we have a very good line that has some great interesting textured fabrics, and every kid will ooh and aah once they touch it, and the colors really pop. And it's been three years and we are selling all over Russia and Japan and Europe. It's a lot of work but it's a lot of fun. On the state of pairs skating in the US: There's some classical-looking teams there that look unique. I think another year or so and we're going to have some depth to it. It's important to me. I'd like to have good access for all the kids in this country looking for teams and looking for partnerships, and getting more boys. If we're going to be competitive with the world, we need to get more guys around 14 or 15 thinking of pairs right away. That's going to be the hard part, because it's a commodity, in a way, it's rare to find a good guy.
