Matt and Wade go through the pilot episode of the American Office. They compare their personal fandoms of the show and how deep their knowledge runs, and then briefly discuss how the show was adapted from the British series created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, its rocky first season and slow ascent into a megahit, and its lasting cultural legacy. And as for the pilot itself, which is generally not well regarded, Matt is surprised at how solid it is, how good a job it does at setting up the series, and how fully formed the main characters already are. The Office was created by Ricky Gervais & Stephen Merchant, and developed by Greg Daniels. It stars Steve Carell, Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski, and Jenna Fischer The pilot is directed by Ken Kwapis & written by Greg Daniels (adapted from a teleplay by Ricky Gervais & Stephen Merchant) Original air date: March 24, 2005 Source: The Office: The Untold Story of the Greatest Sitcom of the 2000s: An Oral History by Andy Greene (2020) - https://amzn.to/4juDN9i Hear Wade's incredible album WHO SAID THAT? on Apple Music, Spotify, or wherever else music is streamed. 24 years between feature films? Talk about resilience. Mark Bristol, my guest today, has worked for the top directors of the last few decades. And now he's tied all of that together with his second feature film, ACCIDENTAL TEXAN. But nothing accidental about his success. In this episode, he'll give you a masterclass on indie filmmaking. In this episode, we talk about:how his Little League Baseball Coach made an enormous difference in his life (his coach was the extraordinarily Bill Wittliff);the importance of mentorship and "paying it forward" in his success;what he learned from having 24 years between feature films;his experience working as a storyboard artist with some of the best directors of the last few decades, including Terrence Malick, Christopher Nolan, David Fincher, and more;he also points out he learns from everyone, demonstrating a humility that is rare, and from Ken Kwapis, how to "bring the joy of filmmaking";he recommends Ken's book, "But What I Really Want to Do Is Direct: Lessons from a Life Behind the Camera";his thoughts on audiences' reaction to ACCIDENTAL TEXAN, of just going for a pleasurable experience -- "you'll laugh, you'll cry, it's beautifully shot";he encourages people to watch ACCIDENTAL TEXAN to watch the trailer to understand the film;how he used coloration to tell the story;what he would tell gearheads about the importance of telling the story;his thoughts on the future of comedic indie films;what he learned from Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise working on MISSION IMPOSSIBLE films about how to listen to audiences;how he'll define success for the ACCIDENTAL TEXAN;the importance of efficiency and preparing for an mid-budget indie film (this is where the masterclass kicks in);advice he'd give young filmmakers just starting out -- how "nothing is precious...and rely on your own creativity to solve it"what's next for this utterly exciting and unique filmmaker -- a late 80s based film called GENERATION X which I will be first in line to see.Links:ACCIDENTAL TEXAN Trailer (https://youtu.be/Cvalr_gHRDk)Mark Bristol's Website (http://markbristol.squarespace.com/)Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/first-time-go/exclusive-content
Producer Debra Martin Chase returns to Hollywood Gold to talk about the making of 2005's THE SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELLING PANTS, a film that resonated (and still resonates) with countless women as it showcases the enduring value of female friendship. Based on the popular novel by Ann Brashares, Debra knew the film would need an incredible director and cast to portray the multitude of emotions within several storylines. She found that director in Ken Kwapis, but the casting was trickier as every young actress of the time was up for the sisterhood. The magic of Hollywood intervened to bring Blake Lively in as the final piece of a perfect cast.
How do we think of people when their true selves are unobservable? Is the projection of false identities onto others an inevitability? To what extent do people actually have multiple identities? Using a relatable romantic scenario as our springboard, this week's episode explores the ways in which we project imagined identities onto other people. A movie whose cast is knocking it out of the park even if the movie didn't light the world on fire. We talk about a favorite from our childhood: "Dunston Checks In" from 1996, directed by Ken Kwapis and starring Jason Alexander, Eric Lloyd, Rupert Everett and an orangutan.
This week Jarrod surprises Joe with director Ken Kwapis! Ken has had a remarkable career directing shows like 'Malcolm In The Middle', 'The Bernie Mac Show' and 'Parks and Recreation', as well as movies like 'He's Just Not That Into You', 'The Beautician and the Beast' and 'License to Wed'. He also helped create the US adaption of 'The Office'. But before any of that, his feature directorial debut was the 1985 Sesame Street film 'Follow That Bird'! Listen as we discuss felt on tables, complicated shots with planes, and who could have worked at the Grouch Cafe! Plus the Count drives by himself, blue Big Bird is devestating, and chaotic preview screenings!
In undoubtedly the most twisted double feature we've yet to conceive, this episode focuses on a pair of films centered on the vulgar, animalistic urges which threaten to undo not only our relations with those we thought we loved but even our own attainment of anything resembling contentment or peace. You guessed it, we're tackling The Misfits and Dunston Checks In! But before we get around to horse wrangling and monkey business, this edition's Blue Plate Special prompts a discussion of two flawed yet thrilling new releases in Gerard Butler's latest action flick Plane and the feature film debut of Kyle Edward Ball with Skinamarink, an experimental chiller certain to divide audiences. We have a bit of a divergence on the relative artistic worth of John Huston's 1961 neo-western starring Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable, a project weighed with perhaps too much pretext for its own good. But rest assured, we reconcile in firm agreement over the profane profundity of 1996's premier pongo pygmaeus. There was a time when studios would actually accept screenplay ideas from the general public and that's how producer Scott Schiend got his hands on a short story entitled “He Sees You When You're Sleeping,” which was written by a Harvard student named Paul Caimi. The story centered around a killer Santa Claus and the concept was interesting enough that Schiend decided to develop it into a film. Under the working title “Slayride,” numerous directors were targeted to lead the film including Sam Raimi, Albert Magnoli and Ken Kwapis but the studio was interested in working with television producer Charles Seller Jr., who had famously worked on the “Life and Times of Grizzly Adams” film and TV series. Principle photography started in March 1983 in Utah with the movie centering around a traumatized young boy who witnesses a killer in a Santa costume murder his family and years later he decides to take up the same mantle to punish all those who misbehaved before Christmas…In our special holiday episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we're going to find out if you've been naughty as we review the 1984 classic “Silent Night, Deadly Night."Music courtesy of Andrew Scott Bell

On the eve of the hilarious Space Force (starring Steve Carell and John Malkovich) returning to Netflix for Season 2, its director Ken Kwapis joins us to talk about the joy of working with such a talented ensemble, and to review his multifaceted career. He's just written a smart and useful book called But What I Really Want to Do is Direct (St. Martin's Griffin), based on his experiences directing such Maltin-favorite features as Sesame Street presents Follow That Bird, The Beautician and the Beast, and The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants…not to mention multiple episodes of Malcolm in the Middle, The Larry Sanders Show, and The Office. Jessie and Leonard had fun reviewing sometimes-unsung films and shows that bear Ken's name.

If The Office were a puppy, director Ken Kwapis would be “the country vet that birthed it” (according to Greg Daniels, at least). Ken speaks on the decisions he made that let the audience feel like they were catching the action on screen by accident, how no one was allowed on set while filming the first few episodes - not even hair and make-up - and the moment he knew that Phyllis just belonged in a paper company. After getting deep and meaningful in our recap of The Beautician and the Beast, it's time to extend our coverage of the Timothy Dalton film just a little bit further by bringing on the director of the film Ken Kwapis to talk everything about it! Yes, that's right, we've somehow managed to bring out an extra episode on the movie that you didn't know you would love so much and somehow connect it right here in our own James Bond universe! Ken goes into detail about his memories of making the movie, including detailing just how amazing he felt the chemistry was between Dalton and Fran Drescher and how Dalton was able to join the project in the first place. Ken also talks about the unique locations of the movie, what his favourite scene from it was and sharing some fun behind the scenes stories. He also talks about his work outside of The Beautician and the Beast as well as telling us if there is any chance that we might see a sequel to the movie! It's a chat that might not be the most Bond interview ever but we know you will still enjoy it!★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

It’s an understatement to say Hollywood is undergoing major changes right now, but are these circumstances unprecedented? I argue things have changed a lot less than we want to believe over the last few months, the major difference is our level of awareness. And what we’ve become keenly aware of is how badly none of us want to go back to normal. There’s no question the pandemic has caused upheaval and instability, leaving us all wondering if we’ll weather the storm or sink with the ship. As the industry attempts to reopen, we grapple with difficult changes like working from home, safety protocols for returning to set or to the office, and setting boundaries for the health and sanity of ourselves and families. Though the change and uncertainty we’re all experiencing might feel new, it’s surprising how little things in our industry have actually changed over the last several decades, specifically in regards to the working conditions and the insane demands put upon our time.Today’s guest, Oscar nominated editor Carol Littleton, ACE, who has edited such legendary films as E.T., The Big Chill, Silverado, The Accidental Tourist, Grand Canyon, Benny & Joon, and The Manchurian Candidate, has endured many changes in her long career in Hollywood. She worked her way into commercials, to indie films, all the way up the ranks to working with some of the best directors in the industry. She successfully made the transition from film to digital, but it was that change that required a greater focus on her movement habits and healthy lifestyle choices to sustain her career and well-being. These habits have contributed to her vitality for her work and her zest for life that you will hear throughout our conversation. This is the second in our series of archive conversations from the ‘Fitness in Post’ days with hollywood film legends where we clearly see that living a healthy lifestyle, weathering major industry changes, and enjoying a long and successful career are not mutually exclusive (pandemic or otherwise). Learn from the cream of the crop how to be resilient and gracious in the face of adversity, no matter how uncomfortable the circumstances. Want to Hear More Episodes Like This One? » Click here to subscribe and never miss another episode Here's What You'll Learn: Carol got her first feature film because...she spoke French? How she went from working on small independent features to working with big Hollywood directors like Stephen Spielberg and Lawrence Kasdan The big question: How did she get her break cutting E.T.??? What the biggest creative challenge was in making E.T. a successful story. The biggest difference between editing on film to editing on an NLE system (and what has been lost in the process). How Carolapproaches a day of dailies and cuts a scene. How the physicality of working on film kept her in shape and active all day long. The switch to Avid drove her crazy because she was so sedentary!!! The difference between your mental agility and acuity is immense when you are sedentary vs being mobile. Sleep, diet, and exercise are her top priorities to stay sharp and creative. How to fight the fear of thinking that if you stop to take a break from work you won’t get everything done (it’s real, but you can overcome it). Turn your work into your exercise to tax your body just enough that it will free your mind to work at its optimal performance level. KEY TAKEAWAY: Eating healthy will make you resilient and capable of handling the ups and downs of the industry. KEY TAKEAWAY: Eating intentionally, mindfully, and with others is the secret to staying energized throughout the day and keeping morale high. Carol’s passion for long walks has taken her through cities and countries across the globe. Her editing career spans 40 years, with more than 40 feature films to her credit. Ms. Littleton began a close collaboration with writer-director Lawrence Kasdan in 1981 with his directorial debut, BODY HEAT. She continued her collaboration with Kasdan on eight more films, including THE BIG CHILL, SILVERADO, GRAND CANYON, and their last collaboration on DARLING COMPANION in 2011. Ms. Littleton has also collaborated with director Jonathan Demme on four films, including, THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE. Littleton received an Academy Award nomination in 1982 for Steven Spielberg’s E.T.: THE EXTRATERRESTIAL. Other films she has edited include PLACES IN THE HEART, TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE (Emmy Award for editing) and the restoration of Erich Von Stoheim’s 1926 classic, GREED. In 1994, she edited CHINA MOON, the directorial debut of her husband, noted cinematographer John Bailey, A.S.C. More recently, the 2015 release of A WALK IN THE WOODS was Littleton’s second collaboration with director Ken Kwapis. In 2016, Littleton edited her first collaboration with director Jay Roach on ALL THE WAY, a political film dramatizing the first 11 months of President Lyndon Johnson’s presidency after Kennedy’s assassination in 1963. In 1988, Littleton was elected President of the Editors Guild and served two terms and later in 1998, two terms as Vice President. The Editors Guild honored Ms. Littleton in 2010 with the Fellowship and Service Award. In 2016, the American Cinema Editors honored Ms. Littleton with its Career Achievement Award. Littleton is presently serving on the Board of Governors for AMPAS and on the Board of Directors for ACE. Ms. Littleton has two other passions in life: music and nature. Throughout her college years, she played oboe in various chamber groups and orchestras and still has an abiding love of concert music. Her formative years growing up in rural Oklahoma, gave her an intimate love of nature. Healthy, hands-in-the-dirt gardening and lug-soled hiking are the perfect antidotes for the dark editing room. Show Credits: This episode was edited by Curtis Fritsch, and the show notes were prepared by Debby Germino and published by Glen McNiel. The original music in the opening and closing of the show is courtesy of Joe Trapanese (who is quite possibly one of the most talented composers on the face of the planet).

"People I respect, heroes of mine, would be Bob Hope... Abraham Lincoln, definitely. Bono. And probably God would be the fourth one. And I just think all those people really helped the world in so many ways that it's really beyond words. It's really incalculable." And so begins the long and amusing journey of two friends discussing each episode of the American version of The Office TV show. Join Dan and Rob as they discuss "Pilot" or alternately "The Office: An American Workplace", the first episode of season one of The Office. Star Trek VI and Cliff Eidelman. One of the youngest composers to score a feature film, Cliff Eidelman was only 22 when he wrote for Magdalene. Since then, he has amassed an impressive body of work—from film to concert hall. He has written a number of scores including Triumph of the Spirit (1989), Christopher Columbus: The Discovery (1992), Crazy People (1990), Untamed Heart (1992), Leap of Faith (1992), Now and Then (1995), If These Walls Could Talk (1996), Witness Protection (1999), An American Rhapsody (2001), Ocean Men: Extreme Dive (2001), The Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants (2005), Open Window (2006), and Big Miracle (2012), which was Eidelman’s fifth collaboration with director Ken Kwapis. In this episode of Melodic Treks, host Brandon-Shea Mutala is joined by Matthew Rushing of The Orb, The 602 Club, and Literary Treks to reflect upon Eidelman's career, from his composing credits to his solo album. We also take a look at some of his work conducting scores by other composers, and conclude with the soundtrack for Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, in recognition of the 25th anniversary of the film.
