Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for December 31, 2022 is: retrospective • reh-truh-SPEK-tiv • adjective Retrospective means “of or relating to the past or something that happened in the past.” // Though mostly pleased with her final grades at the end of the semester, she undertook a retrospective analysis of her work from the previous months. See the entry > Examples: “Despite the relative darkness of Hearts Aglow, [singer Natalie] Mering fondly recalls certain experiences from its genesis. ‘It was a good time to fall in love,' she says, recalling those early pandemic days of binging TV, baking bread, and taking long walks and scenic drives through empty streets. As soon as she makes this point, however, Mering is quick to note it was also a time of anxiety and how she wishes she could have enjoyed those days more. It's a kind of retrospective wisdom that comes up frequently in her songwriting and in conversation: a generous quality that can sometimes make her seem older than her years.” — Sam Sodomsky, Pitchfork, 16 Nov. 2022 Did you know? At the end of the year, both introspection and retrospection are common. While introspection involves looking inward and taking stock of oneself, retrospection is all about recollecting and contemplating things that happened in the past. A look back at the history of the related adjective retrospective reveals that it retains a strong connection to its past; its Latin source is retrospicere, meaning “to look back at.” Retrospective can also be used as a noun referring to an exhibition that “looks back” at an artist's work created over a span of years. Once you have retrospective and retrospection behind you, you can also add their kin retrospect and retro to your vocabulary, too.

Singer, film composer and multi-instrumentalist Patrick Watson was born in California but raised in Montreal, Canada. He performed in local church choirs and played keyboards in a high-school ska band before co-writing several tracks with The Cinematic Orchestra. Joining him is alt-pop singer and multi-instrumentalist Natalie Mering, aka Weyes Blood. She says she speaks to inspire the romanticism that is in us all with her gloomy sonic explorations. Harley Streten, aka Flume, is a Grammy Award-winning musician, DJ and producer from Australia, known for his melodic, layered electronic sound, blending future bass and pop. Caroline Shaw is a composer and violinist who is one of the leading figures in contemporary classical music.

Liz Phair crashed into the indie-rock world in a huge way in the early ‘90s with her instant classic album Exile In Guyville, and she was already the talk of the town—in this case Chicago—before she had even performed publicly. It was an auspicious start to a fascinating career that went from indie-world stardom to Lilith Fair to composing for films and TV to a consciously pop-leaning album to a fantastic memoir called Horror Stories. And it comes full circle, sort of, with her new album Soberish, which she created with the help of producer Brad Wood, with whom she worked on her early albums, including Exile.  Zella Day took a very different path in her music life, starting out very young—at age 15—trying to write songs and make it in Nashville. That led to a revelation that she'd rather perform herself, and eventually a record deal and 2015's pop-centric album Kicker. She played Coachella and other huge festivals, but wasn't fully satisfied with where she was artistically, as you'll hear in this chat. After relocating to L.A., she fell in with a slightly more serious crowd, included pals like Lana Del Rey and Weyes Blood, and her music shifted a bit. She's currently working on an album with producer Jay Joyce, and recently released a song with Natalie Mering of Weyes Blood called “Holocene.” Phair and Day hit it off right away in this conversation, diving right into a conversation about restarting their careers post-COVID—Phair's dad is a retired infectious diseases expert, which gave her some unique insight—as well as the challenges of not giving too much of yourself during an album's promotional cycle. They also tackle the meaning of the word “sober-ish,” which is pretty great. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Liz Phair and Zella Day for chatting. This episode was produced by Melissa Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme was composed and performed by the Range. See you next time!

Woodbury headed out to Marfa Texas to attend Mexican Summer’s Marfa Myths Festival, a four-day, multi-disciplinary celebration of art and music in West Texas, which resulted in his essay, “There’s No Such Thing As Nowhere.” For this episode, he sat down with Natalie Mering, who records as Weyes Blood. We’ve long been fans of her sounds — our own Chad Depasquale said her most recent record, Front Row Seat to Earth, “evokes an atmosphere reminiscent of private press psych-folk and progressive exploration.” This talk dives deep into her religious upbringing and explores the apocalyptic tone that pervades much of her songs.

1. SOHN - Conrad Rennen! 2. Frenna ft. 4. 6. The XX - On Hold ‘I Can't Go For That' was een grote hit in 1981 voor het Amerikaanse ‘blue eyed soul' duo Hall & Oates. Jawel, The XX zijn weer terug met hun derde album I See You, dat begin volgend jaar uit komt! 8. Dirtcaps ft. Eleni Drake - Foreign Tongues Het elektronische duo Dirtcaps spreekt hun talen. In februari komt hun tweede album Walking With A Stranger uit. Dit is alvast een voorproefje. 10. Sigma ft. 11. The Cinematic Orchestra ft. 12.
