From MPR News, Art Hounds are members of the Minnesota arts community who look beyond their own work to highlight what's exciting in local art. Their recommendations are lightly edited from the audio heard in the player above. Want to be an Art Hound? Submit here.Generations of sewingDaniela Bianchini is a Minneapolis mosaic artist who is originally from Argentina. She's drawn toward an exhibit at CLUES' Latino Art Gallery in St. Paul that celebrates the art of sewing as it is passed through generations of women. The exhibit, by Columbian-Minnesotan artist Adriana Gordillo and Nena's Atelier, is titled “Connective Thread.” It opens Friday, March 14 and runs through May 14. There is a Cafecito de Hermanas (Coffee with Sisters) on Saturday, March 15 from 9 a.m. to noon that offers a time for workshops, resources, music and community connection. Register here.  Daniela says: I feel very related to it. We all in Latin America grew up seeing our grandmas and our mothers sewing. I've seen a couple of images that the artists have been posting in their social media: collages of different compositions of fabric and flowers and needles, and things that you see that represent the art of sewing. The community will be able to write something: their emotions, or their feelings about the exhibition, and some sort of petals that will then be sewed together and put in a dress.— Daniela BianchiniCelebrating Latinos on BroadwayAnne Sawyer, executive director of Art Start in St. Paul, is looking forward to seeing Teatro Del Pueblo's “Voces Latinas: A Broadway Musical Revue.” Directed by Mark Valdez of Mixed Blood Theatre with musical direction by Brenda Varga, “Voces Latinas” celebrates Latino artists' contributions to Broadway through the years. Shows are at Park Square Theatre in St. Paul, beginning Friday, March 14 and continuing Saturday, March 15 at 7:30 and Sunday, March 16 at 2 p.m. Anne says: If you love musicals, this production promises to be so much fun. Teatro del Pueblo's performers will sing a curated, eclectic collection of songs that is a take on the Latino experience on Broadway. There are some older, really iconic numbers made famous by the likes of Chita Rivera, such as “A Boy Like That” from “West Side Story” and “Bye, Bye Birdie's” “An English Teacher.” But there's also pieces like Selena's "Amor Prohibido” and the “Hamilton” song “Dear Theodosia,” which was sung on Broadway by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Leslie Odom Jr. What is so engaging about this production is the range of musical styles and how they encompass so many themes, societal differences and passionate love, pride in one's mother country, family and the struggle to survive. It's a show that will take you on a real roller coaster of emotion.— Anne SawyerLilith Fair lives on Laura Hotvet loves the cover band Pandora's Other Box, and she's excited for their upcoming concert, which feels tailor-made for Women's Month. “The Legacy of Lilith Fair” celebrates the female musicians who took part in Lilith Fair in the late 1990s, and the artists who have followed in their footsteps. The concert takes place at the Women's Club of Minneapolis on Saturday, March 15 at 7:30 p.m. Laura says: Pandora's Other Box is one of the most energetic and fun-to-listen-to, fun-to-dance-to, talented pop rock cover bands in the Twin Cities. The show features songs from [Lilith Fair concert tour] founder Sarah McLachlan, along with Paula Cole, Sheryl Crow, The Chicks, Bonnie Raitt, Tracy Chapman, Pat Benatar, Indigo Girls and more. The second act will journey through the 25 years that followed, and this will be showcasing more current artists who benefited from the bravery of the original female pioneers in the Lilith era, such as Brandi Carlile, Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Carrie Underwood, Paramore and more.— Laura Hotvet

For decades—literally since Woodstock—female musicians had battled music-industry perceptions that amassing too many of them, on the radio or on the road, was bad for business. And yet, by the '90s, women were vital to the rise of alt-rock and hip-hop on the charts: from Suzanne Vega to Queen Latifah, Tracy Chapman to Sheryl Crow, Natalie Merchant to Missy Elliott. Sarah McLachlan harnessed this energy into an all-woman tour she dubbed Lilith Fair. Its string of sellouts from 1997 to '99 affirmed women's clout in the decade of grunge-and-gangsta. But the festival was also criticized for its narrow focus and for branding “women's music” as a genre. It is a pleasure to welcome singer-songwriter and guitarist Danielia Cotton to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast.  Danielia is a New York City-based Americana/Roots Rook artist. She grew up nurturing her natural musical gifts in rural Hopewell, New Jersey, where she was one of only a half dozen Black kids in school. After being the first woman in her family to graduate college, she continued to fight against preconceived notions, naming her first full-length studio album, Small White Town, as a nod to her upbringing.  Over the past few decades, Danielia Cotton opened for the likes of Gregg Allman, Bon Jovi, Robert Cray, Robert Randolph, Cristone “Kingfish” Ingram, Derek Trucks Band, and Aimee Mann. In addition, she was named Lilith Fair's Onstage Local Talent Winner, and her music has been heard in television shows and national commercials. The New York Times praised Daniella, stating, “She's a belter who can hold back or work her way up to a gospely blues-rock shout, and in the songs, she writes with her band's brawny guitar riffs, she grapples with the road, salvation, holding on, and letting go.” Daniella's music also received praise from Consequence, Entertainment Tonight, Refinery 29, and Spin.   Her fanbase covers New York, the Jersey Shore, Philadelphia, and parts of the Midwest. She recently performed shows for the 2024 Light of Day Winterfest in Asbury Park.   On this episode of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Danielia Cotton spoke about the lessons she learned from opening for Gregg Allman, Bon Jovi, Robert Randolph, and Aimee Mann. She also talked about her upcoming extended play, Charley's Pride, which honors the legendary country music singer Charley Pride.Let's connect on social media! That Show Hasn't Been Funny In Years: an SNL podcast on Radio Misfits

Nick looks back at some of the most memorable characters in "Saturday Night Live" history that never took really off and became as legendary as they should have. The outrageous ESPN commentators Pete Twinkle and Greg Stink (played by Jason Sudeikis and Will Forte) are featured here, along with Lilith-Fair standup comedian/singer Cinder Calhoun (portrayed by the great Ana Gasteyer), novelty toy creators the Minkmans (Billy Crystal and Christopher Guest) and finally, the shady lawyer Nathan Thurm (a brilliant Martin Short). You'll hear the background of each funny creation, how they were created, and which episodes each of the characters appeared on. Plus, you'll hear the hilarious origin story of Nathan Thurm as told by Martin Short to Conan O'Brien, and more. These underrated characters may not have the most quoted catch phrases of all time, or most popular merch ever sold, but they are very funny, and very memorable nonetheless. [Ep73]

I'm excited to bring you my conversation with the amazing Ginny Owens. I was introduced to her music back in 1999 with her album Without Condition, and I've been a fan ever since. Ginny Owens has spent the past two decades sharing her heart with listeners and readers as a singer/songwriter, author, teacher, and advocate. Her unique musical style and inspirational lyrics have transcended genre definition and taken her to diverse venues that include the White House, the Sundance Film Festival, Lilith Fair and the National Day of Prayer in Washington, D.C. Ginny has also been an adjunct professor at her alma mater, Belmont University, served as a worship leader, partnered with non-profits, and authored two books, the latest of which is Singing in the Dark: Finding Hope in the Songs of Scripture. She also just released her newest album a few weeks ago! It's called I Know a Secret, and it's fantastic! If you're a fan of thought-provoking music and great songwriting, you'll love it as well. Ginny and I talked about her life as a recording artist, how she got started in music, her songwriting process, the value of having a portfolio of creative work, and much more. As a side note, one of the most frequent frustrations I hear from writers is that they want to write, but they don't like marketing. If you have ever felt that way, I know you'll be encouraged by Ginny's perspective, which is that it's not marketing—it's encouraging. This was definitely a very encouraging conversation, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! * * * Today's episode is sponsored by Vellum, the go-to book formatting software for indie authors who care about creating beautiful ebooks and print books. Scott and Paul discuss.PART TWO:Our in-depth conversation with the legendary Natalie MerchantABOUT:Natalie Merchant launched her career as the lead vocalist and primary lyricist of the band 10,000 Maniacs, which broke through with the double Platinum album In My Tribe in 1987. Subsequent albums Blind Man's Zoo and Our Time in Eden spawned the Merchant-penned singles “Trouble Me” and “These Are Days,” respectively. Following an appearance on MTV Unplugged and a hit single covering Bruce Springsteen and Patti Smith's “Because the Night,” Natalie departed the band to launch a solo career. Her debut album, Tigerlily, featured the Top 10 singles “Carnival,” “Wonder,” and “Jealousy,” and was certified five times Platinum. She has gone on to release nine solo studio albums, including the Platinum-selling Ophelia, which spawned the single “Kind & Generous”; Leave Your Sleep, which topped the US folk charts; and a 2014 self-titled release that reached the Top 5 on Billboard's rock chart. Recent years have found Natalie rearranging her songs for string quintet and acoustic instruments for the documentary Paradise Is There, directing Shelter, a documentary on domestic violence, curating the 10-disc box The Natalie Merchant Collection, and spending four days a week working with children as an artist-in-residence at a non-profit pre-school. In November 2022, Natalie was appointed to a six-year term on the board of trustees for the American Folklife Center at The Library of Congress. Her ninth studio album, and first album of all new, original material in nine years, is the self-produced Keep Your Courage on Nonesuch Records.

Think you know renegade roots songwriter icon Ani DiFranco? Think again! We are happy to bring you this special rebroadcast as Ani celebrates the 25th anniversary reissues of legendary albums Living In Clip and Little Plastic Castles which we dive into in this talk. Ani is more than a songwriter and singer of course. Call her an activist, author, and free-spirited feminist folk leader - who recently released her lushly orchestrated twenty-second album: Revolutionary Love. Many things have been said about the music Ani DiFranco has created for the last thirty years since she burst on the scene with her fiery self-titled LP in 1990. With her shaved head on the cover, fearlessly bisexual love songs, dexterous guitar work and hold-no-prisoners lyrics sparing no one from her poetic magnifying glass, DiFranco's persona became almost synonymous with a rejuvenated women's movement that blossomed in the late-1990's Lilith Fair moment. And yet she was always a bit more committed to the cause than some of her more pop-leaning contemporaries, who faded away as soon as their hits subsided. Framing herself somewhere between the rebellious folk-singing teacher Pete Seeger and the gender-fluid show-stopping rock spirit in Prince, (who she recorded with after he became a fan,) DiFranco was always just as passionate about raising awareness for abortion rights, ensuring safety for gay and trans youth and bringing music to prisons, as she was promoting her latest musical experiment. She began playing publicly around age ten, and as a nineteen-year-old runaway from Buffalo, NY, she started her own label, Righteous Babe Records, that allowed her to operate free of corporate (and overwhelmingly male) oversight. Indeed, despite gaining a wide international fanbase she has released every album herself since the beginning — as well as championing genre-defying songwriters like Andrew Bird, Anaïs Mitchell, Utah Philips, and others. It was DiFranco's encouragement that helped Mitchell's opus Hadestown become a Tony-winning Broadway smash. DiFranco may have been deemed a bit too left-of-center for pop radio, but her beloved 1997 live record Living In Clip went gold. Let's get something out of the way real quick: was this male podcast host initially a bit intimidated to dive into her encyclopedic album collection after admiring her work from afar and believing the songs were not meant for his ears? Indeed. I grew up with girlfriends and fellow musicians who rocked Ani's Righteous Babe pins and patches on their jean jackets like they were religious ornaments. What I found during this mind-bending conversation, and after listening to her polished and mystical newest record especially, was that DiFranco has never tried to push away people that don't look or talk like her — or tried to mock or belittle conservative movements she doesn't agree with or understand. There is a deep kindness and empathy in her songwriting that I never expected and in her 2019 autobiography, No Walls And The Recurring Dream, she acknowledges how lonely and exhausting it can be trying to fight against a societal tide that doesn't want to stop and give you space to be who you are. What became increasingly clear during our conversation was that DiFranco wants to make music for everyone. She prides herself on her quirky, multi-generational fanbase — with grandparents and kids, dads and sons, daughters and aunties alike singing along to favorites like “Both Hands,” “Untouchable Face,” and covers like Woody Guthrie's “This Land Is Your Land” at packed shows across three continents.

When Peter makes a whole scene at the not-jazz club keeping Lexi from telling Amanda what she knows about Peter, Kyle figures out that he might be able to confirm his vague suspicions about Peter by joining forces with her, even going to her fake office to arm-grab her about it. Lexi keeps it to herself...for now. When Kyle's not laser-focused on taking Peter down, he's taking down Eve, a Lilith Fair manquée trying to book a gig at the club. When she collapses in the parking lot downstairs, Amanda takes an uncharacteristic interest in her. Ryan's interest is still on Megan: refusing to take no for an answer when he asks her out, he forces her to bring Lexi as a chaperone on the date he bullies her into accepting. And Michael is STILL suspicious that Jane is going to cheat on him with Alex, and sets traps to try to prove himself right, some more.
