Today marks a special milestone for The Shift Show, as it is our 200th episode! This is truly a moment to celebrate and reflect on all the amazing work we have done to help gymnasts change their lives. When I first started this podcast back in the summer of 2018, it was simply a hodgepodge of lectures and ideas put together with the goal of providing valuable information to the gymnastics community. Without you, the listeners, The Shift Show would not be what it is today. Your support and dedication is truly appreciated, and I am grateful for your time and attention. In addition to the support from the gymnastics community, I also have to thank my incredible team. Becky, in particular, does a fantastic job of handling the podcast, social media, and back-end work to make sure the show runs smoothly week after week. I am also grateful for Taylor, who helps with analytics and surveys to make sure we are always providing relevant and valuable content to our audience. The main goal of The Shift Show has always been to provide information that can make a significant impact on someone's life and help improve their experience in the sport of gymnastics. Whether it is through technique, mental blocks, or simply learning from the experiences of others, I hope that this podcast has been able to serve as a valuable resource for gymnasts, athletes, family members, and friends. To celebrate this special 200th episode, we hosted a live Q&A with experts Nick Ruddock, Victoria Cunningham, Pat Redfern, and Lindsey Stancil. We invited listeners to join us on Zoom and ask whatever questions they wanted, and it was a fantastic discussion!Get your early bird tickets now and save 25% off at www.shiftmovementscience.com/2023shiftsymposium! This week on the podcast we discuss a very important topic, with my buddy Nick Ruddock, and mental health counselor Rebecca Grady, who was recently on the podcast. We touch an ‘elephant on the room topic' that I think so many people in gymnastics are realizing is a huge problem and needs addressing. Which is; coach to coach relationships, staff gossip, and drama, which can really bring the vibe down in a gym. We talk about where these things stem from, whether they're related to coaching ego, personal conflicts, or if your gym just isn't the best fit for your own morals. We review all the things that we've experienced, what we've gone through and offer people constructive solutions on what to do because we know this is a huge problem a lot of gyms face. We DISCUSS; Nick and Becca's experiences with not-so-great coaching teams and coaching dynamics, and what they thought were the root causes for them were. WHY empathy, communication, and the ability to deal with problems, not in front of the athletes or parents and not on social media is so important. Nick SHARES HIS IDEAS on philosophy differences and how to compromise when someone thinks differently with how you should coach skills and drills, but also how you should run a gym. Having the RIGHT mindset, you don't know what you don't know. A MENTAL HEALTH PERSPECTIVE on how to have harder conversations? They sound great but the idea is terrifying for so many coaches. STRESS RESEARCH; how social connections or bonds can either be the biggest source of stress for some or it can be the biggest buffer of stress to be protective and build resilience. WHY being part of a team isn't trying to make people like each other, it's about making people respect each other. ALSO… WHY when you're trying to find a gym to fit into, it is not a case of how good you are, it's about how compatible you are.

How do you build a strength program for gymnast in 2021 from scratch? With overwhelming amount of information on the internet, on gymnasts lifting weights, or knowing how many days, reps, sets or even which exercises to do. It can be stressful for coaches to know where to start. So I enlisted the help of my good friends Dan Lonsdale and Nick Ruddock to combined our brains and literally build a strength program from scratch! We discuss WHAT what we would do in 4-5 training sessions, the exercises, the set and reps. WHEN to program light days or heavy days. The IMPORTANCE of core work. Dan illustrates the BEST way to increase strength using proper general conditioning and weight room stuff. WHAT gymnastic specific floor lines, active flex and handstands/body alignment exercises to do. Nick explains his Daily Dozen. ALSO… HOW to apply our program to those who train three days per week. Check out the blog post which has FREE downloadable templates of our strength program, blank templates, along with some extra recourses myself, Dan and Nick put together to help build your own strength program. Watch on YouTube to see us sharing the screen, writing down the exact things that we would do along with videos of the exercises. This information is so important, it'll increase your athletes performance and reduce the risk of injury. This is the future of gymnastics moving forward, so the more people we can get on board the better healthier athletes we can have. ENROL NOW! In this episode, Jeannette speaks to Nick Ruddock who turned his passion for gymnastics into a full-time career. He has been coaching for 17 years, has coached for Team GB and Olympians, and today is a gymnastics consultant who runs his own successful business. Nick and Jeannette talk about how the approach athletes employ to excel can be used to take any business to the top. They discuss effective goal setting, mindset, managing failure, creating winning teams and bouncing back from adversity. KEY TAKEAWAYS Always lead with passion. If you get the chance to merge your passion with your work, do so. There are many commonalities between running a business and being a successful world-class athlete. Athletes and business owners need to set firm goals, measure their performance, then adjust their approach. You have to target your efforts. It's not enough to be busy. What you are doing has to move things forwards. Often, it is the small things that lead to the biggest gains. An athlete improving by just 1% can be enough for them to win. There are always opportunities, but you must prioritise wisely. Mindset is critical. Everyone is going to fail at some point. Failure is feedback, it is a normal part of the learning process. Over-confidence leads to complacency. Invest in educating yourself at all stages of your life and business journey. Being able to take sticky topics and simplify them enough so people can understand is a valuable skill. Stay true to your values. If you don´t you will lose passion and momentum. Being self-aware will help you to perform better whatever you want to do. Hold up a mirror to yourself. Be uncomfortable, then address your issues, and leverage those lessons. Be compassionate with yourself when you make mistakes. Address them but don´t beat yourself up about it. Trust your instincts. If something does not feel right park it or maybe, ask someone for a 2nd opinion. Sarah (of the Shire) Brown (8:12) In her second season as head coach at Penn State, Sarah Brown joins us to talk about her time at GAGE, what it's really like there, and what happens if you're not turned out in the airport. Plus, the changes she tried to institute at Penn State after taking over at a program in turmoil, how transferring during her own college career informs her perspective on the athlete experience now, when we're going to see a four-element beam series in the Penn State lineup (spoiler: it's never), and whether Jessica is still allowed to call her Sarah of the Shire. So we obviously need to talk a lot about college gymnastics—the differences between college and international, how judges go about trying to reconcile their deductions with the need to rank routines, how best to improve college gymnastics judging, and the deductions she would have for an example routine. PLUS, behind the scenes stories about what happened in 2000 after the vault debacle and after Raducan was stripped of her medal. Nick Ruddock (1:19:36) Nick was a national coach for British Gymnastics who worked with everyone fro Ellie Downie to Amy Tinkler. He is now a consultant who has worked with 18 federations around the world, including Japan and the Netherlands (drink!). He emphasizes an athlete centered approach for longevity and high performance. Each year he shares his knowledge via GymCon which you've heard Jessica talk about one million times. Nick Ruddock is a busy guy! He is travelling all across the world providing coaching advice and coach education for gymnastics clubs and global federations. He is widely regarded as one of the leading coaches in his field but his journey is not a typical one. In this episode we discuss...- How he spent £8,000 on his initial coach education - Why he thinks that coaches should own their own learning and stop waiting for the system to feed them- Why coaches are magnetised to learning all the wrong things- Why he thinks that the UK underachieves when it comes to talent development - His views on talent transfer and how more coaches should let go of their ego and enable their athletes to progress There is plenty to get stuck into here...Enjoy
