Where do emerging food leaders see the industry heading over the next five years? For the second year of our informal survey, we asked about 60 Cornell University food program students to rank the importance of various food trends including plant-based, sustainability, inflation, and more. Cornell University Professor Dan Hooker and one of his students join The Food Institute Podcast to help us break down the results. More About Dan Hooker: Dan is a global retail and consumer packaged goods executive with broad experience across diverse business environments and formats, leading traditional food retail operations and merchandising, as well as product development, consumer and category analytics, sourcing and procurement, global trading, national sales and ecommerce. Dan is an outstanding strategist and general manager, and he has led the successful startup of multiple diverse businesses. Known for and recognized as one of the world's leading authorities on retailers' proprietary brands, he has shaped clients' programs across four continents and eight classes of trade. His passion is in helping companies see their unique DNA and positioning and creating actionable marketing and sales strategies essential for their success. After earning a degree from Cornell University in Agribusiness and Marketing, Dan plunged headlong into retail joining Aldi Foods as a District Manager. In the early 1990's Wakefern/ShopRite was very concerned about Aldi's expansion east and Dan jumped at the opportunity to start a business, and moved to West Springfield, MA and opened the first Price Rite Store. Today there are over 70 Price Rite stores that generate over $1 Billion in annual revenue and they are a strategic growth driver for Wakefern. After spending two years at Arthur Andersen as a retail consultant Dan spent fourteen years at Daymon Worldwide working with manufacturers and retailers across the world. Dan's career at Daymon progressed rapidly, and In 2011 Dan was appointed to the Executive Leadership Team (ELT) as the Chief Supplier Officer (CSO). As the CSO Dan was responsible for Category Management and Analytics, Supplier Relationships, Global Sourcing and Procurement and ran Daymon's import and export businesses. As a member of the ELT Dan was instrumental in re-inventing Daymon from consulting/brokerage company to a broader retail services company. Dan left Daymon at the end of 2013 and joined Trilliant Food and Nutrition in January of 2014 as the Vice President of Sales for national accounts and ecommerce. For the last four years Dan has focused on the digital channel selling to ecommerce retailers and running multi-million-dollar businesses for Walmart.com and Jet.com. And today, Dan is on the Faculty at the SC Johnson College of Business at Cornell University where he teaches both graduates and undergraduates in Food and Consumables Marketing, Supply Chain Strategy, and he is the Director of External Education for the Food Industry Management Program. With the return of students nationwide to school, after a year of remote and hybrid learning, grocery retailers are anticipating a successful back-to-school selling season. For our latest Off the Shelf podcast, Supermarket News spoke with Aimee Becker, senior vice president strategic advisory at Daymon, a leader and pioneer in private brand development, about the latest trends in back-to-school at retail, the importance of private brands to the category, and the impact of the pandemic on category sales and shopping behaviors as students return to schools. Becker noted that there are two key factors affecting shoppers as they think about this year’s return to school. “First, we're really seeing that consumers are being a bit more cautious. With everything that's going on in the world, they're just making sure that they're thinking about their purchases and really thinking about more of a just-in-time inventory in their house, if you will, or pantry stocking, because they want to be prepared for what's to come,” she said. “The second thing is, due to commodity prices and labor shortages, consumers are actually seeing price increases across categories. So, something that's really different this year is that retailers are really in a position to help shoppers not only plan, but really stretch their budget. And that's one of the things we're really excited about, the role private brands can play because they really do play a role in bridging that gap for consumers.” With consumer trust in private brands at an all-time high, there is a great opportunity to provide consumers with back-to-school products at value prices — from classroom supplies and apparel to snacks and lunch foods and, this year particularly, sanitizers and face masks. Another trend impacting this year’s back-to-school shopping is the growth of e-commerce. “We're hearing that about 50% of consumers are anticipating shopping online more this year than last year,” said Becker. “So when it comes to marketing — and marketing for back-to-school specifically —omnichannel is more important than ever, making sure that you're appealing to shoppers across platforms and really driving your message across platforms. When it comes to specific messaging, really making it easy for the shoppers — not necessarily talking about the products that we're selling, but more of the solutions that we're bringing, the problems we're solving, the emotional side of how you get stuff done at this time of year. We're definitely thinking that that's going to play a much stronger role as people are really looking to problem-solve as they're heading back to school.” For more insights from Aimee Becker of Daymon, including marketing strategies for a return to the “lunchbox,” growing awareness of sustainability in back-to-school products and harnessing the power of social media to reach shoppers, listen to the full podcast.

Private brands have come a long way the past few years and they're no longer viewed as just low-cost alternatives at shelf, noted Aimee Becker, Senior Vice President Strategic Advisory at Daymon, a leader and pioneer in private brand development, during a recent SN Off the Shelf podcast. And that change in attitude toward private label has placed the category in an even greater position of strength during the pandemic. “I think we've really shifted consumer attitudes away from this idea of generics or just a price play at shelf to really being true consumer brands,” Becker said. “This shift really started with retailers focusing on improving quality, and today we see that 86% of shoppers consider private brand quality to be equal to or better than the national brand.” In addition, according to the Daymon Private Brand Intelligence Report, just under 90% of consumers say that, compared to national brands, they trust private brands just as much or more (89%) and that private brand variety is just as good if not better (87%). “As we think about COVID specifically,” Becker continued, “private brands were really well positioned pre-pandemic. But when COVID hit, the strength and relevancy of private brands really became a little bit more pronounced. At the height of the pandemic, we definitely saw a lot of brand shifting and that really worked in favor of private brands. We think that we'll continue to see positive trajectory and momentum for private brands in the months to come.” As for who the private brand shopper is, Becker said it crosses all demographics and pointed to data from the Daymon report. “I think there tends to be this stigma of who the private brand shopper is,” she said. “But the private brand shopper is really everyone. Three in four shoppers buy at least one private brand item on every shopping trip. With that, a third of shoppers actually say that private brands comprise the majority of their shopping cart. “Then conversely, you only have about 6% of shoppers saying that they exclusively buy national brands. If you take all of those facts together, everybody's buying private brands in some way, shape or form.” And Becker expects that trend to continue and grow, particularly among the younger Millennials who have been driving private label success before the pandemic hit. This group is really starting to abandon this cachet of legacy brands and is increasingly becoming brand-agnostic, she pointed out. “What they're looking for is products that are meeting their needs at the time and place they're at,” she said. “As private brands are continuing to innovate and really engaging shoppers in a different way, we think we'll continue to see that broaden.”
