EP 17: Olympic Gymnastics Team Member and Olympic Trials Judge Kristie Phillips

Dance Dad With John Corella

“Leave it on the floor. No regrets.” Continuing with Olympic month, host John Corella welcomes Kristie Phillips, 1988 Olympic team member, former national champion, winner of the American Cup to the Dance Dad podcast—and his inner child is screaming. For all of her career achievements thus far, Kristie exemplifies that unlimited opportunities lay ahead—opportunities to learn new things, embrace new experiences and, in turn, provide new opportunities for other people. Today she discusses how she helped to change the sport of gymnastics as an athlete, and later as an athlete representative and an elite judge.   As much as Kristie has won, she also knows what it means to fail—and to be made to feel insignificant as a result. Failure is part of the process and we must know how to deal with it, while remembering that we are enough just as we are. Citing Simone Biles as an example, Kristie and John discuss the changing attitudes toward the health and well-being of athletes in competition, and the importance of inclusivity at all levels, and why gymnastics is the best preparation for life.    Join today's discussion to hear Kristie talk about her relationship to legendary gymnast coaching duo the Karolyis, appearing on the cover of Sports Illustrated making a gymnastics comeback ‘late in life,' and taking up ballroom dancing for the first time.    Quotes “To me it's kind of the mother of all sports. It embodies grace, power, discipline, perseverance, self-motivation. It's just every life lesson that you're going to need in your life, you will experience in the sport of gymnastics at a high level of competition.” (13:23 | Kristie Phillips)  “Everybody's enough. You're born enough. And I think as society, we're so judgmental, and we're so quick to tear someone down and I wish we could get back into building people up.” (16:15 | Kristie Phillips) “I just enjoyed being out there and performing and making people happy and touching lives. Inspiring people. That's what I love to do…I love providing for people opportunities—probably my kids would say I like to do that too much—but I just truly enjoy giving to other people and helping them on their journey.” (34:34 | Kristie Phillips)  “I see the big picture now. I think I've kind of lived my life with blinders on and kept doing what's next—what's next—what's next and so I'm starting to really enjoy the process and really starting to appreciate the opportunities that life has given me.” (1:01:32 | Kristie Phillips)  “Once you're there, leave it all on the floor. Don't doubt yourself. Don't hold back. Don't try to save it. Go for it. Go big or go home. And enjoy giving it your all. If you win, you win; if you don't, you don't, but there will be no regrets. Leave it on the floor. Put it all out there and enjoy every minute of it.” (1:03:47 | Kristie Phillips)    Links Connect with Kristie Phillips: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kristie_phillips_kpac/ Website: www.kpacgym.com   Dance Dad with John Corella on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dancedadwithjohncorella/ John on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/john_corella/ Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

France and UK Elections Send Warnings to a Flailing Biden Campaign (+ the US Isn't Ready for FIFA & Fox Soccer Struggles)

In this episode, Alex starts by worrying about how the United States doesn't appear ready to host a FIFA World Cup in a few years. As he has been watching both the Euro Cup and the American Cup, Alex has noticed that the Fox Soccer crew has not only had bad (and dumb) takes, but also just seems lackluster in understanding the nuances of the game. He cites an article in the Guardian that explains it all. For the rest of the episode, Alex looks at how recent elections in the UK and France can send useful messages to Democrats/centrist movements in the world (especially the United States). In both the UK and France, the far-right was held back by moderated left-leaning parties and uniquely built coalitions that served as bulwarks against extremism. Alex worries that as Joe Biden and his allies are struggling to have tough conversations around his ability to run for four more years, some of the political dynamics in Europe can serve as both warnings and advice.

It's all about the money, honey. And we would be fools to think otherwise. INEOS Team UK's budget for the last American Cup challenge was $210 million and the cost of mounting an America's Cup campaign gets higher and higher with every passing year. If you've got chump change, if you've got mates looking for coins down the back of the couch, sure you can mount a challenge. You are extremely unlikely to come close, far less win it. And so, as expected, Grant Dalton and Team New Zealand have followed the money and have elected to defend the America's Cup in Barcelona. It is and it always has been about the money. It's not 1995 any more people. When buying a pack of red socks made you a shareholder in Team New Zealand and you could bellow Sailing Away with gusto and pride.  I take Grant Dalton's point, that if you can't attract the backers and you can't get the money, you can't get what you need to take the boat itself to the next level.  I think we're fine with the talent we've got and the sailors we've got, and the associated people involved in a challenge. But if you can't get that technology next level, then we're going to be downwind all the way. The writing's been on the wall for some time. Grant Dalton is a winner. That's what he likes doing. He needs big money for Team NZ to win. He wasn't getting it here. Have we missed a trick? I don't think so. I think we've funded these guys into their waterfront properties long enough. It would have been great. It was fantastic last time even in the midst of all the nonsense.  Grant Dalton made it very clear they need money to win. They will follow that money. They found a pot of gold in Barcelona. Will he parley that win should they do so and bring it home as a consolation prize for Kiwis? I wouldn't bet my red socks on it.

The Wiggles hit the news this week. Turns out they had a few issues with their visa application, and by the time it was granted, there were no more MIQ vouchers left for the children's entertainers, meaning, the Wiggles might not make their tour dates.I thought this may have been the best news of the week for some parents. but apparently not - over 40,000 tickets have been sold.Simon Bridges got involved – he's a got a three-year-old obsessed with The Wiggles – while the Prime Minister called for a practical solution. So we once again have the question of who we should be letting into New Zealand. Entertainers? Filmmakers? Sports teams? Comedians? Drag queens? American Cup team owners?Sports teams and entertainers don't sound very essential or critical. You and I could likely survive without them. But for the New Zealanders in these industries, building businesses and reputations, and supporting many others along the way, getting exemptions is essential to keeping afloat. But are seasoned workers, seamen, and crane drivers more or less important to keeping New Zealand businesses ticking over? The main criteria for being allowed into New Zealand is whether the skills or experience the person has are readily obtainable in New Zealand, or whether the worker is undertaking a time-critical role in specific areas. This sounds pretty vague. When it comes to international sports teams or entertainment superstars who can sell 40,000 tickets – not many Kiwis can do that, maybe just Six60. To boost the economy we need big names to come to New Zealand – the kind of visitors who help drive the accommodation, hospitality, and service sectors, while also employing local crews.Vice-president of the Promoters Association Gray Bartlett has called for a more clarity around the criteria as applied to international music and comedy acts, and has accused Immigration of favouritism. We have the time now, while in a kind of limbo, to think about how we increase opportunities. This is the time for the Immigration Department to work with the industries, where there's ambiguity, to come up with a more seamless criteria and process.I'm for letting workers in to support vibrant industries we so desperately need to boost our economy. However, right now is not the time.In light of UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson announcing the new variant of Covid-19 is not only more transmittable, but also possibly 30% more deadly than the previous variants, combined with our reluctance to use the Covid 19 Tracer App, caution is required.I think Australia is on the money. If this really is our most critical, high-risk Covid period since the last community outbreak in August, then maybe it's time to reduce the flow of people returning to New Zealand. It's not forever, just until we can vaccinate all border workers, flight crews and MIQ workers. As much as I want to move forward, maybe we should just take a breath, and slow the flow.

Justin Sidelle was born in the San Francisco bay area in California. Justin started training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2005 after seeing elements of the art in early UFC fights. Justin competed regionally and internationally in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with notable achievements in the US Open, American Cup, Bay Area Invitational, and Taiwan International Championships. In September 2014, Justin received his black belt from Olavo Abreu in Phuket, Thailand. After receiving his Black Belt, Justin focused primarily on coaching athletes for professional MMA teams in Bali and Thailand while still competing internationally. In between coaching professional athletes and competing, Justin concentrated on refining his Gi programs and sharing his love for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu through seminars and group classes around the world. In 2020 Justin founded Rituals Jiu-Jitsu team in Bali Indonesia. “ I’m at a point now with my Jiu-Jitsu, where I am ready to build my own team. I have been very fortunate to train in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu all around the world. I now want to share all my systems and techniques with martial artists who are ready to share my vision. I always dreamed of living the jiu-jitsu lifestyle, and looking back; I had a defining moment. It was in 2010 when I made a trip to Thailand and did a month-long training camp in Phuket. This was the first time I tasted the Jiu-Jitsu lifestyle to the fullest, which forever changed my life. It fueled my passion and gave me direction with what I wanted to create with my jiu-jitsu, and I have been so grateful to be having such an incredible jiu-jitsu journey. Kyla Ross by Christy Linder Dr. Caroline Just (00:01:15) She studied psychology and neuroscience in university, and then went to medical school at McMaster University. She is currently in the middle of her training as a neurology resident physician in London, Ontario, Canada. She has an interest in preventative medicine and public health awareness. She talked to us about concussions in gymnastics: Euphemisms for concussions from "rocked," "shaken up," "bell rung," "loopy" to "seeing stars." Second Impact Syndrome Blain Wilson's 2004 Olympic fall and all of the euphemisms that were used to describe his traumatic brain injury. Best Practices for for coaches, parents and teammates: ANY head injury during practice or a meet should be investigated with a concussion checklist, because if you keep going without it, the second concussion could make things much worse.  Print out a checklist and put it on the wall of the gym or download the Heads Up App Take Tylenol not aspirin, Ibuprofen, Advil, Motrin, Naproxen or Aleve. Most concussions resolve within two weeks, but if you don’t go through the appropriate steps, waiting to be symptom-free for 24 hours before you advance stages, you risk not healing properly, which increases risk of long-term neurocognitive symptoms Go see a doctor if you are worried! It’s pretty unlikely that the doctor will tell you to quit, or to take a long break.  Doctors are required, in most states and provinces, to inform authorities if the welfare of a child is in danger, including by coaches. If you think a coach is negligent – don’t be silent. Get parents involved, get head coaches involved, get athletic directors involved. The right people will take this very seriously. Gymnasts are tough. They are used to focusing on the goal and working through the pain. However, sometimes the toughest thing is to do what is right for your health, or your friend’s health. It’s better to miss the meet than miss the season, or miss out on your life.   In the news, Uncle Tim, Spencer, and Jessica chat about: Gymternet News (23:37): Is it a surprise that Kyla Ross has retired from elite? Simone Biles hugs Katelyn Ohashi after winning the 2015 American Cup.   This week we are joined by very special guest and World Cup silver medalist, Mary-Anne Monkton of Australia. Uncle Tim, Evan and Jessica recap of the 2015 American Cup in Cowboy Stadium AKA Simone Biles new house: Marta was on the Nastia Cup broadcast doing commentary again and it was fantastic! Oleg gave Uncle Tim the best birthday present ever! MyKayla Skinner crashed her Cheng in podium training and completely missed her hand. (see photo gallery link below). Head Scratcher of the week: How does a gymnast get invited to a World Cup. Read all 16 pages of Rules here or this: The top seven all-around placers at World Championships are invited. If that includes the host country already, the 8th placer is invited. If it doesn't include the host, the 8th spot is reserved for the host. The FIG Executive Committee can invited a 9th wildcard. If after inviting the top eight they don't have eight participants, they then invite placers nine through twelve from Worlds. If they still don't have eight, they then invite each federation in the order they finished in the team competition at World's (up to the eighth place team) to send a gymnast until they get eight. Then the wildcard gymnast is selected by FIG. Do we think it’s fair the way NBC characterizes Simone as unbeatable, as if the pressure doesn’t compound exponentially the more she wins? Debate our favorite moments and best saves of the meet: MyKayla Skinner on beam or perhaps Sam Mikulak on high bar. We give our thoughts on leveraging the host country's music and cultural dances in floor routines. We pretend we are Aimee Boorman and devise a strategy to keep Simone Biles happy, healthy and engaged. We pretend to be Sam Mikulak and devise a plan for him to convert the consistency he had for his NCAA team to his elite career. The High Bar tension controversy: are the men supposed to all use the same tension on the high bar? No, we are asking. We want to  know! Nastia Liukin gets her first grade from us as a commentator. Fashion: what did we think of the Nastia Cup leo, and could Nastia's Swarovski crystals on the nails work for the men Friday the 13th of NCAA Gymnastics. Every meet had a terrifying crash. The worst of which was Shelby Hilton from University of Kentucky. We have an update on her and opine that perhaps a little angel named Kylie had something to do with that crash. The Rage-o-Meter ; Trautwig needs to acknowledge that the majority of the gymnasts on the World Cup circuit are in their 20's and that's the new norm. And many women in their 20's make the US Olympic team and even win medals. We launch a new campaign. 2013's breakout star, Simone Biles talks to us about competing at the American Cup, her planned upgrades on floor and vault, who she should star in a realty show with, the triple-twisting yurchenko, what to do if surprised by a confetti bomb or wild peacocks, gives advice on handling fear, and tells us her goals for 2013. Simone's coaches Aimee Boorman and Luis Brasesco from Bannon's Gymnastix, tell us what it's like to coach a person who, as Aimee's says, "On any given day could have three new skills named after her in the code of points." The duo opened up about strategy, concerns and philosophies on coaching Simone as a person and an athlete. We hear how Luis approaches coaching a skill that has never been done before (yes, we mean the triple twisting yurchenko in WAG), what happened the first time Aimee saw Simone, which coaches they learn from at The Ranch, how they balance Simone's power and difficulty level while considering fun, happiness and safety. Finally, and obviously most importantly, we asked about their reaction to the video of Simone trying the standing double back!
