Steve Leo is a master trainer for Parisi Speed School and educates young athletes through the VertiMax system and teaches them how this method is a game changer for their body and their target sport.   Steve understands that competitive sports can be very dangerous for an athlete who's been competing for years. It can be hard on the body and the ability to bounce back and recover might get harder and harder as you get older. What are some of the ways you can prevent this from happening? Steve has 9 stages that he'd like to underline for the audience today so that they can have a long and fruitful athletic career.    Key Takeaways: [1:05] A little bit about Steve. [2:15] Competitive sports are very hard on the body.  [3:20] Steve dives into the first stage: Active start.  [5:30] What should 6 to 9-year-olds focus on?  [7:55] Children need to begin getting conscious about the importance of good eating habits, but balance is key here.  [9:40] At 11-16-year-olds, strength training is key and should take on a primary focus. [12:15] Benchmarks are important at the 16-17 age mark. They're old enough to understand why it matters to keep track.  [15:30] They're now in college and they're a full-time athlete, what should they focus on?  [16:45] These athletes have to buy in 100%. This is not a ‘sometimes' thing, or else they'll get injured. [19:00] Former athletes need goals. This is just the way they're wired. [19:50] Following these steps is critical for success. It's important to make sure the athletic tests that you're doing are age appropriate.    VertiMax VertiMax on Facebook VertiMax on Instagram VertiMax on YouTube VertiMax on LinkedIn VertiMax Certification Education   Tweetables: “Anybody under the age of six should be starting off with an active start."   "Some children can't absorb information at too young of an age. They begin to absorb it at 13-14 years old."

Shauna starts off the show by sharing her extremely committed and driven mindset that she has used for all of her years working in the industry (13:53). She talks about her time spent at 3 different universities (Brock SPMA, Durham College Sport/Event Management, West Virginia University Masters of Sport Management) and shares how the time she spent at all three fueled her passion for the events side of sport, which led into multiple opportunities with assisting in major games, such as the Invictus Games in Toronto and the Canada 55+ Games in Brampton (17:09). She also elaborates on the massive differences on the college level with sport events in Canada, compared to NCAA events in the U.S, while going into detail about what a major games experience is like- spoiler, almost no day at a major games is "typical!" (25:45) Shauna then talks to us about her tenure with Field Hockey Ontario. Shauna tells us how she got her start at the organization, where she ascended to Executive Director from her Event Coordinator role in an extremely quick timeframe (30:59). She elaborates on the transferability of skills in sport, (32:19), and the strategies that Field Hockey Ontario is implementing to continually grow the sport each year through partnerships, recruiting new Canadians, and implementing the Long Term Athlete Development model to ensure that athletes get the optimal support that they need in training or in game action (33:18). Finally, Shauna talks to us about her involvement in the Black Female Coach Mentorship Program which creates equitable opportunities, support, and leadership development opportunities for Black female coaches across the country (41:58). Joe Eisenmann joins me on the Supporting Champions podcast this week as we explore the area of long-term athletic development. We discuss his background in physiology, academia and applied practice and start off by discussing some of the fundamental principles of pedagogy and how important that is in academic and practical pursuits.  We then delve into some of the research Joe has conducted on lifestyle and health related behaviours and how they relate to markers of physical activity and long-term athlete development, exploring ideas on training regimes, parental inputs and the pressures they are under. It is clear that Joe adopts a holistic, critical thinking approach to help people develop and sustain health and performance across youth and adult life. I very much enjoyed the conversation with Joe as he understands many of the dynamics involved with working in sport, such as being a specialist vs generalist, but it is the centre piece of what he does and being mindful of the development of other humans that I enjoyed most.  Show Notes Steve and Joe start off by discussing the management of knowledge. Specifically, the translation and implementation of knowledge to ensure academic and practical impact Steve starts to explore Joe's journey and his experiences in the field of athlete development. But in particular a focus on Joe's time studying and working in Carnegie 1 academic institutions, USA Football and in consultancy. Joe shares his passion for youth sport but tells Steve about the moment he realised his focus would have to shift to health and disease related research - where research funding was being provided.  Joe parts with some of the major insights from his period of study into physical activity, sedentary behaviour, sleep, stress and genetics. Joe then highlights the overlapping concepts from this research and how there is overlap with long term athletic development.  Steve and Joe then discuss how Joe supports athletes holistically. He stresses the importance of psychosocial development and the challenges associated with working as a unit with parents, coaches and athletes. Steve and Joe chat about doing the fundamentals of performance really well, silver bullet approaches, the specialist vs generalist concept and the important skills required to work in sport.  Joe shares a concept he likes to talk about called ‘the living lab' and how we collect, process, implement and review information and action. Steve and Joe then unpack the importance of relational and environmental concepts in developing talent.  Joe emphasises the importance of coach education, the coach as a delivery system and the importance of pedagogy no matter the environmental conditions. They are leaders at the centre of an athlete's sporting experience.  Joe asks all of us, what is your quality of life? He believes this should be one of the most important metrics in life. A good exercise Joe suggests is to think about your ideal day.  What is next for Joe? More of living in the moment, maintaining a good quality of life and making an impact on a daily basis with youth athletes wherever that might be.  Follow Joe online Follow Joe on Twitter https://twitter.com/Joe_Eisenmann Visit Joe's website https://ironmanperformance.org  https://ironmanperformance.org    Supporting Champions on Twitter www.twitter.com/support_champs Steve Ingham on Twitter www.twitter.com/ingham_steve Supporting Champions on Linkedin, www.linkedin.com/company/supporting-champions Instagram https://www.instagram.com/supportingchampions/ A reminder if you're keen to pre-register for the next wave of Graduate Membership enrolments then you can do so at https://supportingchampions.co.uk/membership/ If you're looking for some coaching support or some virtual team development help to support you to get to the next level in work, life or sport then take a look at https://supportingchampions.co.uk/coaching-mentoring/ or drop us a note at enquiries@supportingchampions.co.uk then you can sign up for a free consultation to explore which package is right for you.

Coaching Resources Positive Coaching Alliance - Their Double Goal Coaching material is a great starting place for a coach at any level Book: Good to Great by Jim Collins - The enemy of great is good Book: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey Book: Leading with the Heart - by Coach Mike K. Discipline/Rewards HUGE IDEA #1 Spend much more time praising the kids who are doing it right - and much less time getting on the kids who aren't behaving.  Often the misbehaving kids want attention so if you are giving all the attention to the kids who are doing it right, the misbehavers will fall in line. Inspiring Story Michael gave a scholarship to a kid who wasn't as athletically gifted as some others but had an unbelievable work-ethic and attitude.  Michael really connected with the kid and they had a great experience. Long Term Athlete Development and Long Term Coach Development Canada and Great Britain have created programs that look at long-term athlete development instead of putting kids on teams immediately focused on winning Most new coaches in the U.S. have never been trained on coaching HUGE IDEA #2 When you coach - ask yourself: is your primary goal the long-term development of the athlete, or just winning? The One that Got Away When coaching college against his big rival - Coach Phillips showed some 'Braveheart' clips pre-game - and his guys got over-fired up before the game, and had absolutely no energy left 5 minutes into the game.  Lesson learned: be more methodical and business-like in pre-game, not too rah-rah.
