The Pittsburgh Pirates are coming off their roughest weekend of the season after getting swept by the Philadelphia Phillies, blowing a 6-0 lead on Friday, getting shut out on Saturday and Sunday, and falling to last place in the NL Central. On today's OffBeat, Alex Stumpf breaks down why this series felt different, from the bullpen collapse and Dennis Santana's struggles to Paul Skenes turning in one of his worst starts of the year. The Pirates also lost Ryan O'Hearn to the injured list with a quad strain, creating a major hole in a top-heavy lineup that was already struggling to find answers. Alex also looks at what could come next after Nick Yorke was optioned to Triple-A, whether Jhostynxon Garcia, Ronny Simon, or another bat could be part of the next move, and why the upcoming Cardinals series suddenly feels like the biggest test of the Pirates' season. The Pittsburgh Pirates dropped a late-night game to the San Francisco Giants, and while the offense had its issues, the bigger concern once again came from the middle relief group. Carmen Mlodzinski gave the Pirates six innings and kept them in the game, even if it was not the cleanest or most convincing start. But once the game turned to the bullpen, Justin Lawrence struggled to execute and the Giants opened things up. Anthony DiNardo and Tyler break down whether Don Kelly made the right move, why the blame cannot fall entirely on the manager, and why someone in this bullpen has to step up soon. They also discuss the Pirates' lineup against a left-handed starter, Jared Triolo leading off, Billy Cook and Nick Yorke getting starts, Oneil Cruz's baserunning mistake, and the bigger question of whether Ben Cherington needs to look outside the organization for middle relief help. The Pittsburgh Pirates dropped their fourth straight game, falling 5-4 to the St. Louis Cardinals in another frustrating loss that felt there for the taking. Tyler and Doug break down Bubba Chandler's uneven start, Don Kelly's bullpen management, the decision to go to Evan Sisk and Chris Devenski in a tight game, and why the Pirates' lack of urgency stood out during a rough stretch against the NL Central. They also discuss the continued concerns with Brian Reynolds, Oneil Cruz and Marcell Ozuna, Nick Yorke's big pinch-hit moment, Nick Gonzales nearly walking it off, and why Paul Skenes now feels like the guy who has to stop the bleeding. The Pirates are still above .500, but this losing streak is starting to expose some real issues with the rotation, bullpen, lineup construction and late-game decision-making. The Pirates dropped a frustrating one to the Nationals, but the biggest talking point wasn't just Mitch Keller's rough start. It was the late-game decision to pinch hit for Brandon Lowe, who has been one of Pittsburgh's hottest bats and already homered earlier in the game. In this episode of OffBeat, Alex Stumpf breaks down why that moment stood out, what Lowe has already meant to the Pirates lineup, and how his presence is impacting hitters like Oneil Cruz and Bryan Reynolds. He also explains why Nick Yorke is not the real target of the criticism, even if the move didn't work out. Lowe hit a home run earlier in the game, off a left-handed pitcher, but was taken out instead of facing one in that spot. To top it off, that spot in the order came up with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th and Yorke popped out in foul ground with the tying and winning runs on-base. Mitch Keller had the Nats on lockdown—five scoreless through 5 on just 62 pitches—before he was lifted and the bullpen let it slip, turning a 3–0 lead into a 6–5 loss. Doug and DiNardo break down the decision to pull Keller, the ensuing relief carousel (and why “just get outs” wasn't the plan), and a bizarre base-running gaffe at the plate that erased the tying run. We hit the late push too: Nick Yorke's pinch-hit AB, Joey Bart's RBI knock for Henry Davis, and how a passed ball + non-competitive pitch compounded the damage. Offensively, there were real positives—Jared Triolo (2 hits), Spencer Horowitz (2 hits with a homer), Nick Gonzales (2-for-4), Bryan Reynolds RBI—while Andrew McCutchen's 0-for-4 and apparent back issue are something to monitor. Plus: what this says about Don Kelly's in-game leash, the bullpen's volatility (Sisk/Nicolas, etc.), and the bigger roster-building conversation. Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey joins host Adam Bittner to analyze the future of Henry Davis and other young players with the Pirates. Is Henry Davis still a viable candidate to be the club's catcher of the future? Or are his struggles at the plate to profound to overcome in his time share with Joey Bart? Will any of Nick Yorke, Cam Devanney, Liover Peguero or Ji-Hwan Bae appear on the opening day roster next season? What should GM Ben Cherington and manager Don Kelly do with Oneil Cruz amid his continued underachievement? Where should Cherington be planning to allocate his free agent dollars for 2026? And where do names like Denis Santana, Braxton Ashcraft and Bubba Chandler fit into the future bullpen mix? Our duo tackles those questions and more.

Ben Cherington believes that he put the Pirates in a stronger position going into next year. Yahoo Sports gave the Pirates an F+ for the trade deadline. Mullsy dropped the Pirates deadline grade to an F. Poni thinks the Ke'Bryan Hayes trade was the Pirates only good decision. He gives it a B+. Tommy Pham has been one of the best hitters in baseball the last couple of months, and the Pirates somehow didn't trade him. An insider says he is done with the Pirates because they care more about finances than winning. MLB writer Travis Sawchik from Driveline Baseball joined the show. Rafael Flores is ranked below Nick Yorke in the Pirates top 30 prospects. Sawchik says the Pirates went against the league consensus with the return in the Bednar trade. He also says that Fangraphs projects that Flores would have an 86 WRC+ if he came up today, which is a problem because he might not be a catcher. Travis says he can't believe Bailey Falter would be a non-tender candidate. Mike Florio from Pro Football Talk joined the show. Florio says the Micah Parsons situation was just the Cowboys doing Cowboys things and it blew up in their faces. He also says that if he were to get traded it would take two first rounders and a $45 million deal. Mike says that Parsons lost all of his leverage because he actually showed up. Mike thinks that Buffalo makes the most sense to send a deal for Parsons. He thinks that the Terry Mclaurin trade request is just an effort to get the Commanders to pay him. Florio says that people should be skeptical of anything ESPN reports about the NFL as a whole.
