Was this past weekend's series against the Rockies the worst of the Pirates season? Poni wonders what should happen if the Pirates finish the year with another losing record. Would it finally be time for Pittsburgh to trade Paul Skenes?
The Pittsburgh Pirates wasted another winnable game at Coors Field, falling 2-1 to the Colorado Rockies after scoring only once and failing to bring home the tying run with the bases loaded in the ninth. Paul Skenes was not at his sharpest, but six innings and two runs should have been enough. DiNardo and Jim break down the game-ending interference call involving Billy Cook, another lifeless offensive performance, Jake Mangum's costly mistakes, how much the Pirates miss Oneil Cruz and Konnor Griffin, and why Carmen Mlodzinski's two scoreless innings were finally the right way to use him. The loss drops Pittsburgh below .500 and turns the series finale into a must-win game to avoid being swept in Colorado. BREAKING: The Pirates have called up Esmerlyn Valdez following their series win in St. Louis. Valdez is coming off back-to-back 20+ HR seasons in the minors and already has 10 this season in Indy. We speculated that Billy Cook would be the player going down with the move. GIVEAWAY. Total Request Thursday.
The Pirates have called up Jhostynxon Garcia ahead of their series against the Cardinals. Garcia had a monster game in his return to Triple A and with the injury to Ryan O'Hearn, the Buccos have promoted their #4 overall prospect. How often should the Pirates trot him out there? He will hit 6th tonight and play in RF. What does the lineup look like with Garcia in it? Chris is not happy about Jared Triolo still being in the lineup. Would you rather see Billy Cook at 1B? It would be quite the time for Marcell Ozuna to step up.

The Pittsburgh Pirates dropped a late-night game to the San Francisco Giants, and while the offense had its issues, the bigger concern once again came from the middle relief group. Carmen Mlodzinski gave the Pirates six innings and kept them in the game, even if it was not the cleanest or most convincing start. But once the game turned to the bullpen, Justin Lawrence struggled to execute and the Giants opened things up. Anthony DiNardo and Tyler break down whether Don Kelly made the right move, why the blame cannot fall entirely on the manager, and why someone in this bullpen has to step up soon. They also discuss the Pirates' lineup against a left-handed starter, Jared Triolo leading off, Billy Cook and Nick Yorke getting starts, Oneil Cruz's baserunning mistake, and the bigger question of whether Ben Cherington needs to look outside the organization for middle relief help. The Rangers topped the Pirates last night, but the biggest story didn't come from the game. Instead, it was from the comments made by Andrew McCutchen following it. Cutch is still clearly salty following his Pirates departure. Would the Pirates be better off with him instead of Marcell Ozuna or Billy Cook? 2/3 of the show thinks Cutch needs to stop crying and be happy he got his 3-year reunion in Pittsburgh.

Cutch is still clearly salty following his Pirates departure. Would the Pirates be better off with him instead of Marcell Ozuna or Billy Cook? 2/3 of the show thinks Cutch needs to stop crying and be happy he got his 3-year reunion in Pittsburgh. Of course, a year when the Pirates look like a good team, the rest of the NL Central is great. How do fans feel about the Andrew McCutchen comments? Former Penguin Tyler Kennedy joined the show. Does Tyler like what Dan Muse is doing right now? TK said the Penguins need to adapt and match the style Philly is throwing at them. What is going on with Kris Letang right now? It looks like Justin Brazeau is back in the lineup after being a healthy scratch in the first 2 games. Tyler believes in the Russian connection between Evgeni Malkin and Egor Chinakhov, so he was speechless to find out they aren't on the same line tonight. Tyler thinks the Penguins bounce back tonight and Sidney Crosby will have a big game to shut up the building in Philadelphia.
Pirates 1B Spencer Horwitz joined the show. Spencer hit his first home run of the season last night in a 16-run outburst from the Buccos in the opening game of the series against the Nationals. Spencer said the fun is contagious in the clubhouse right now as the team wins games, raises the cone and wears the welder mask. Spencer shouted out Billy Cook for being the guy that keeps the cone under safekeeping. Spencer talked about the hot start for Oneil Cruz and the work he put in before the season to bounce back in 2026. He got into what worked in the second half of last season, which had us saying Horwitz was the Pirates best hitter in 2025. The guys ran through some dudes on the roster and had Spencer describe them on & off the field. The guys had some fun with Spencer, as a Ravens fan, about the Steelers winning the AFC North this past season. How did Spencer spend his first offseason in Pittsburgh?

NFL Draft analyst Ryan Wilson from CBS Sports joined the show. How could things break for the Steelers next Thursday in the 1st round of the NFL Draft? Ryan doesn't expect more than 3 WRs to be off the board, with the top guys like Carnell Tate and Makai Lemon as the only obvious ones. Ryan thinks the WR group is so deep that you can still find a future WR1 in the 2nd round. Ryan believes Vega Ioane is a potential Top 10 pick by the time we get there. Ryan pointed to Germie Bernard as a find entering the second night. What type of prospect is Spencer Fano and could he be a real option for the Steelers at 21? Ryan would not be stunned if the Steelers trade back into the 1st round if Ty Simpson is still on the board at the end of the night. What do some of these other offensive linemen look like that could be late risers before next Thursday? Ryan believes it could be injuries that push Jordyn Tyson down the board, who may be the best WR in the draft otherwise. Ryan said Jermod McCoy could be a name at 21 that attracts the Steelers. Taylen Green is one of the most intriguing prospects in the draft class, but what is his value as a great athlete that can't play QB all that well? Ryan said if you need to ask if any of these QBs are better than Will Howard then you probably shouldn't draft one. Ioane feels like a Ravens pick at 14, but he could slip to the Steelers. Donny Football Debrief – Where will we be setup for our NFL Draft coverage?

Riders on the Storm” turned out to be the last song Jim Morrison ever recorded. When the album was finished, he left L.A. for Paris and either died on July 3, 1971, or he went permanently off the grid – whichever you'd like to believe. But it's the lyrics behind the song that is the most unsettling of all – it was inspired by one of the most sinister spree-killers in history. His reign of terror began in the last days of 1950, and over the next two weeks, he went on a senseless rampage. He kidnapped nearly a dozen people, including a deputy sheriff, and murdered six of them in cold blood, including three children. During those 14 days, the killer – a born loser named Billy Cook – terrorized the highways of the American Southwest and earned a permanent place in the history of music and as the inspiration for two terrifying films.Have a question or comment? Post-Gazette Pirates insiders Noah Hiles and Andrew Destin discuss their key takeaways from the team's 12-4 loss to the Red Sox on Tuesday afternoon at LECOM Park in Bradenton, Fla. Newly signed left-hander Andrew Heaney made his Pirates spring training debut, and it didn't go well. What caused Heaney to give up four earned runs and three walks in 1.2 innings? Should we be concerned about that? Plus former Pirate Quinn Priester started for the Red Sox and earned the win, showcasing velocity we never saw during his time in Pittsburgh. Where was that version of Priester during his time at PNC Park? Billy Cook made an excellent play in center field Tuesday. Could his defensive versatility give him a better chance of cracking the opening day roster? Our duo answers those questions and more.
Pirates OF/1B Billy Cook joined the show. Billy said he missed out on the air bnb he had last year in spring training with the Orioles. Billy is living with Nick Yorke during the spring, another young guy that came over at the deadline last year. Billy said he isn't much of a cook and told the story about making chicken pot pie. The guys asked Billy about playing with Paul Skenes and the approach against him in the batter's box. Billy told the guys about a few ‘holy crap' moments he's had in his professional life, but he doesn't have any starstruck moments yet. Who does Billy model his game after? Billy said his favorite player growing up was Dustin Pedroia because he thought he would be shorter due to both of his parents being 5'7. Billy talked about the challenge of breaking through with the Orioles due to their abundance of good, young players in the system. He gave his kneejerk reaction to being traded to the Pirates. Billy feels most comfortable in CF and talked about seeing Oneil Cruz in action. He thinks Cruz could be a great athlete in multiple sports.
Pirates 1B Darick Hall joined the show. Darick is a new Bucco this year, recently with the Phillies, a team that was on the doorstep of a championship the last few seasons. Darick said his junior year of college is when he really started to find his power and get the grip of reality that he could get drafted. Darick talked about the guys he watched growing up and who he tries to model his game after – some big-time boppers of the late 90's and 2000's. Darick said one of those guys was Barry Bonds and he broke down what he loved about his game. Darick talked about the changes in the game and how hitters approach at-bats differently than years ago. He said Juan Soto was deserving of his money and noted how great of a swing he has. The guys asked Darick about how he has changed his strategy at the plate after a down year in 2024. Darick described his favorite moment in the big leagues so far. Darick chatted about watching baseball growing up and his love for the 2004 Red Sox. Darick gave a shout out to MVP Baseball 2005 – the single greatest baseball video game ever made. The guys asked Darick about his offseason and/or relaxation plan. Billy feels most comfortable in CF and talked about seeing Oneil Cruz in action. He thinks Cruz could be a great athlete in multiple sports. Pirates 2B Nick Gonzales joined the show. Nick joined during our Mock of the Day segment and reacted to his Cowboys taking Ashton Jeanty in the 1st round. Nick said he went to all but one Cowboys game 2 years ago. Nick said his favorite Cowboy player of all-time is Tony Romo. Nick talked about his high school days and playing multiple sports. Nick said Alex Rodriguez was his favorite baseball player growing up, but also loved Andrew McCutchen when he started to play outfield. Nick talked about his love for cars and his grandpa being a racecar driver back in the day.
On their weekly Pirates mailbag video, Post-Gazette insiders Noah Hiles and Andrew Destin answer reader questions, including: What was the timing of Spencer Horwitz's wrist injury? Did Ben Cherington know about it when he traded for Horwitz over the offseason? Who will be manning first base in Horwitz's absence — Endy Rodriguez, Billy Cook, Bryan Reynolds? What will be the Pirates' record in Paul Skenes' starts this year? And how is Oneil Cruz attacking his first full season as a center fielder? Our duo answers those questions and more.
Spencer Horwitz showed John the stitching for his surgery and it looks more like a thumb injury than a wrist. Horwitz and Cherington both explained the pain came near the end of January after the trade and PiratesFest. Billy Cook could play first base. It won't be Bryan Reynolds. Darick Hall has a limited track record in the major leagues.
Mark Chiarelli and JJ Cooper are talking all about the Pirates farm system in a new MLB Prospects Deep Dive.(00:00) The pitching development is rolling, but this team could use some bats.(3:00) Analyzing No. 1 prospect Bubba Chandler. On his daily First 10 podcast, Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey reacts to the Pirates' latest loss Tuesday to the St. Louis Cardinals. He ponders another strong start from Bailey Falter; three hits for Nick Yorke in his MLB debut; manager Derek Shelton's curious decision to pinch hit Yasmani Grandal for Billy Cook late in the game; the disturbing surge of stolen bases allowed to opposing runners; and what it all means in the big picture. How has the team crashed so hard since the July 30 MLB trade deadline? And can they even match their 2023 win total by playing decent baseball over the final couple of weeks? Jason answers those questions, then turns attention to the Steelers. Why should there be no controversy at QB this week with Justin Fields likely starting in NFL Week 3 against the Los Angeles Chargers, as Russell Wilson continues to navigate his injury? And will Broderick Jones get another chance at tackle from coach Mike Tomlin?
On his daily First 10 podcast, Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey reacts to the Steelers' 18-10 victory against the Atlanta Falcons in NFL Week 1. He highlights the dominance of LB T.J. Watt and kicker Chris Boswell on a day when the offense took center stage. And ponders what should happen at quarterback after Justin Fields filled in capably for injured starter Russell Wilson. He also weighs in on Pitt's win over the Cincinnati Bearcats on Saturday, noting QB Eli Holstein's maturation and a breakout performance from RB Desmond Reid. Then he wraps the show by explaining why he was encouraged by the Pirates' Jared Jones and newly promoted Billy Cook after they split their series with the Washington Nationals over the weekend.
The NS9 Postgame Show Powered By Primanti Bros. Jim & Doug discuss today's Pittsburgh Pirates game vs. the Washington Nationals. Pirates reporter John Perrotto of Pittsburgh Baseball Now joined the show. It's one of the worst losses John has seen in a while, but the 1992 will always be the worst. John had some fascinating things to say about how Shelton and Cherington will be back. Shelton has been a good 'yes man' and only showed some frustration yesterday. Why are Billy Cook and Nick Yorke not here?
Hour 3 with Paul Zeise: John thinks David Bednar is still being hampered by an injury and might benefit from a move out of the closer's role for a bit. It doesn't make sense why Billy McKinney receives the call to Pittsburgh over Nick Yorke or Billy Cook. John thinks Ke'Bryan Hayes' back injury might be chronic and needing surgery. The Penguins made a prospect-for-prospect trade.

On their Pirates podcast, Post-Gazette insiders Noah Hiles and Andrew Destin discuss what the Pirates' goals should be now that losing sweeps against the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers have severely diminished their MLB postseason chances. Can young players including Henry Davis and Jack Suwinski prove they belong in the club's 2025 future and beyond? Will young starters Paul Skenes and Jared Jones see their innings counts managed more closely to limit injury risk? And will prospects including Billy Cook, Nick Yorke, Mike Burrows and Brandon Ashcraft see promotions from GM Ben Cherington and manager Derek Shelton by the end of the season? Our duo tackles those questions and more.
